People with $7K Worth of Food Stamps? The State Where This Is Happening Might Surprise You

“Should there be a limit on how much tax payers dollars can be given to someone on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program?” Texas’ KGBT 4TV asks in an investigative report on possible food stamp abuse in the Rio Grande Valley.

“One valley man was outraged after finding out how much money some people on government assistance are getting,” reads the report. “Action 4 News uncovers just how many people are on SNAP in the Valley and how much money they are getting.”

The report was helped along by a gas station clerk who had grown tired of seeing customers make enormous purchases with their Lone Star cards. In some cases, he says, people would show up and have a balance of at least $7,000 on their cards.

“There are times I see customers come in and they’ve got thousands,” “Bob,” who spoke on condition of anonymity, told KGBT 4TV.

“[O]n an average day he sees about 10 different people all with over $2,000 in food stamps, who report to the government they cannot make ends meet,” the report notes.

“But they’re driving Mercedes,” he adds.

“Bob” says he tried calling a few government offices to notify them of the amount of money being distributed to food stamp recipients but was told nothing could be done about it.

So the local news team looked into it.

“I had never heard of this issue until you brought it to light,” State Representative Terry Canales told KGBT 4TV.

He added that a $7,000 surplus is “extremely concerning. Reaching these balances is obviously not in the best interest of the state and the people that have these balances its questionable as to whether they need the assistance.”

“According to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, there are more than 238,000 people on SNAP in Hidalgo County, costing tax payers more than $28,000,000 dollars this month alone,” the report notes.

“For Cameron County, 119,000 people are receiving assistance, at a $13,000,000 cost for February,” it adds.

“Where’s this going? What’s wrong with this picture?” Canales asked.

After the above investigation aired, Canales said he is “considering an audit on those accounts.”

Time to go back to the government cheese days. Where food assistance was not a lifestyle that many would a want to be stuck.
Work the program like WIK does it give food assistance people vouchers for milk, basic cereals, cheese, bulk staples like rice and beans, sugar, and bulk low ends meats chicken, pork .fish.
No one will starve under that program and no one WILL WANT TO STAY ON THAT PROGRAM.
SO THEY MIGHT TRY AND FIND WORK AND ACTUALLY STICK WITH IT.
As far as housing goes we need to re-establish the projects but under army barrack like supervision month random drug testing, zer tolerenbce for crime or unauthorized house guest. Also require 20 hours a week in community services and project maintanance. No one will be homeless but at the same time no one will want to live that life style and might think hard about getting a job and get outr of the program.
      Keep it simple

Actually now that it had to go public to get something done, count on the fact that these people with thousands on their cards will quickly load up the pantry and closets, buy up product they can sell off, and completely get rid of exorbitant balances. If you are going to warn people that you’ll look into their abuse, expect them to hide the evidence of that abuse.

And why do they need this kind of publicity to get an audit? This should be standard operating procedure. It’s a quick fix to put red flags into the system for irregular purchasing and high balances. Someone needs to be fired.

People fall on hard times things happen beyond their control. I’m not souless or heartless I don’t think we should as a christian nation turn our backs. However we shouldn’t provider an alternative entitlement life style either time limits and community services will help with that. And we should place strengent rules that must be followed to make sure that its is not a disirable alternative to earning your own way. If those who are on assistance violate the rules they should not be allowed to apply again for 5 years. If they have children and they can’t afford them or have violated the regulation require they send to relatives that can, find a charity that will help themn back on their feet or send them to adoption agencies. Children should not be made to suffer for the irresponsibility of the parent or parents.

Sequester food stamps. This alone would save billions. There are so many people receiving government assistance who really don’t deserve or need it that it has become the new way to live. And to think, we all get to pay for it, well not all of us, those sucking it up don’t pay they take.

      @Naughtycal and others:

Not everyone using SNAP and other associated benefits is a welfare recipient or a freeloader.

Are you expecting the disabled to starve? They can’t exactly work to support themselves, because… *gasp* THEY’RE DISABLED!

I became disabled in 2002. From 2003 to 2006, I was homeless and penniless. Now? $700 a month plus medicaid and EBT.

Do you really think I WANT to live like this? I would rather work and live a decent life. Instead, I’m reduced to this, with no options or opportunities otherwise.

While I was still waiting on Social Security to pull their heads out, I looked for work. As soon as they discovered I was disabled due to a past TBI, they suddenly did not ‘have anything available for my skill set’. So it’s not like I didn’t try to get back to work.

Not sure about Texas, but I can tell you as a fact, based on seeing it first hand, that when I worked at a hospital in NYC there were two groups who seemed to manipulate various government programs for their own advantage. The Russians who were coming in large numbers during the 1990′s and the orthodox jews who reported no income or assets as the synagogue “owned” everything. Families with 10+ kids were living in $500,000 brownstones again “owned” by the synagogue, were on Medicaid and somehow were able to send all their kids to private school, had nice cars and seemed to have cash when they needed it. Not sure how much of it was the black market, but it was very obvious that there was a great deal of manipulation of the government programs.

So you people believe that the only Black people get SNAP benefits? This is not a fact. There are just as many or more White people who receive SNAP benefits. Furthermore, the Hispanic population and other immigrants get more benefits than Black and White people combined.

It is an outrage that these people qualify for 2K-7K in SNAP benefits and the system needs to be modified. Another important point is that these programs were not initially created for minorities but for white women.

I live in rural South Georgia. I just love standing in line to pay for groceries and seeing the person ahead of me pulling out a half dozen or more EBT cards with a list of PIN#s and trying to match the card to the right pin#s. I’m not sure how many EBT accounts an individual can have but I know the cashiers will wait patiently while these folks hold up the line zeroing out the balances on multiple cards. I do know that here and in Tennessee the going rate for a card is fifty cents on the dollar. As that is the standard offer from people trying to sell them to me at various stores. Tell them you want to take their picture to show to the cops and they take off pretty quickly. Then there is the fact that much of what is purchased with these cards is junk food, steaks, seafood, etc. I often hear people remark that it is nobody else’s business what they buy. It’s my tax money so it’s my business. Especially when you see those items stacked on half a cart of wine and beer. Yeah I know they can’t buy alcohol with the card. They just subsidize the alcohol with the money they save using EBT funds which means the tax payer is buying their alcohol. I’m disgusted with the system and the low life gutter slugs that milk it.. The country of origin, the color of their skin, is of no consequence. Being an oxygen thief is equal opportunity for all races and nationalities. The EBT system was created with good intentions but being in need and being on the program are two very different th

@BayuzhiZERO Disability (if truly neede) is different. I have an adult son who lives with me and is permantly disabled. He will live with me the rest of my life (assuming he outlives me). I accept SSDI because he helps me keep him clothed and fed. But the government keeps trying to get me to get food stamps….but his SSDI is supposed to cover that…a free cell phone (he’s MENTALLY disabled and I wouldn’t trust him with a phone), and even to be paid to watch him so I could get free cash. Ummm, I’m his mom, why do they need to pay me to watch him? That’s the abuse of the system. These people who rack up $7,000 on their Snap cards are going to be in a world of hurt when the economy collapses and you can’t run a card, credit or Snap. They will have nothing. I love the food we get, I know where it comes from and it is delicious! I taught myself to can so we always have food. I do know there are people out there who need the help and that is fine, however this is absolutley absurd! When I was a student 4 years ago, my wife and 3 kids qualified for about 800 clams per month in food stamps. They could only buy “food” with the card, but a lot of the “food” was soda, candy, and chips.

Point being, Romney had no chance as he was offering success after hard work while Obama and his ilk realized the gimmedat vote was the best path to victory. Obama wins, America loses. Actually it is worse…usually the neighbor would not be married to the mother of the child, simply living there with her and the 4 or 5 other children, all with different baby-daddies….

it is why the “youth” in the projects and ghettos all can afford to drive tricked out cars with expensive rims and stereos and aftermarket parts that the rest of us can’t buy and then drive around all day with their hommies and then go home to play PS3 and XBox 360 on 60 inch LED TV’s while putting their new Air Jordan’s up on the coffee table and screaming at “mama” that there is no food in the house…

Mama just sits eating bon-bon’s in her bedroom all day watching her 60 in TV set to the Oprah channel and screams back that junior will just have to wait until the 15th or 1st of the month until the food stamps come through or the Section 8 housing assistance or the neighbor gives her the cut from the “free child care” check they lied about or the EBT/Lone Star card gets reloaded…

No reason for junior to get off his butt and get a job when he knows mama is pregnant again from the boyfriend of the month and that will just mean another raise in her assistance levels..also why he doesn’t care if he knocks up the girl next door because he doesn’t have to pay for that either..

Cut the entire lone star system. Let local food banks handle the problem. Then if fraud is caught in that system. Jail time for thefood bank worker and the recipiant.
Its very frustrating to pick and choose in a grocery store and watch these people grab and snatch, never looking at the prices. Grocery stores don’t seem to care as they are making profit off the system.

Agreed, but keep it to a minimum of what people can get and base it off not only income and there monthly bills BECAUSE THHEY CAN AND WILL LIE ABOUT IT! Only theneediest familys shall recieve these, people can put cars, mortgages, powerbills, and all sorts of things in other peoples names and pay them, they can also get paid under the table or deal drugs, I can’t believe this is in good ole’ Texas! I live in Idaho and we are very conservative and I woldnt even dream of this happening here. The hmost I have seen given here is $650 in Food Stamps and $200 for Cash Card from the H&W office and that was a familyof 2! And both working but refuse to sell there damn BMW’s! Someone needs to listen to Dave Ramsey and start there ‘Baby Steps’! I am disgusted by all of these mooches, I have a 1 month old and I adopted my 10yr old sister-in-law and I get wic for my baby and I only get $200 in SNAP. My wife works I work part time stay with my baby. And I don’t want a dime more, my kids have clothesfoodand a warm house and loving parents, thats all they need!! We own both of our cars and do notplan on getting a carpayment any time soon, I had a $170 car payment for my Subaru and sold it to take care of my kid, I own a 97 t-bird and a 98 Mustang both over 100k and reliable. But I own them!!! So with that said sure, I could use more but I dont want to use the system people got along for aVERY VERY long time with out the govt. helping out, its dispicable.

Some of these people have never worked a day in their lives and are now the 5th generation of welfare. 5 or 6 kids born just outside of wedlock with 5 or 6 different fathers who don’t ever provide food, housing, medical care etc. We spay and neuter cats and dogs, but these people are out of control. What’s wrong with this picture? They need to get off of their lazy dead butts and go to work. Our system is broken.

The HEB store in stephenville TX. Watch the illegal cash their checks and send money to Mexico. Then buy shopping carts full of groceries with a lone star card. Wait 30 minutes and you see the same ones buying beer at Walmart. Yes they are all driving newer cars than I a taxpayer.
If grocerystores had to take a large discount on lone star purchases this would stop. Guaranteed.

I can back up what Dublin says because i live in Stephenville Tx! I’ve seen ppl, mostly illegals go in there and buy 500 bucks worth of food, pay it all off with a Lone Star card then whip out a 100 dollar bill. Buy a few cases of beer and some ciggs. Then they go and jump in a new 30k dollar truck. This happens almost everytime i go in there. I’ve literally turned around to other customers while waiting in line and openly called them a disgrace to humanity. My wife worked at Walmart for 1 1/2yrs and at one of the local Allsups for 2 1/2yrs. The cashiers don’t like it either, it makes them sick to their stomach as well. Typically the ones i’ve seen that have food stamps don’t speak english. On the other hand and this is sad i’ve seen just regular legal citizens and since they are broke i’ve seen them grab like 20 of those little totinoes pizzas and live off those! It’s sick and completely disgusting on how this country is ran.

This is a serious question – I swear I’m not starting trouble. How do you know they’re illegals? I’m a college grad, have a great job, drive a nice car which I paid for myself. And nothing, absolutely nothing, the government “takes away” is going to affect me directly. As far as I’m concerned, they can take it all away today. But I mow my own lawn, change my own oil, and work on my own house and sometimes I have to go to a store during or afterwards and sometimes, I pick up beer. I wonder how many times you’d see me at AutoZone, Home Depot, or HEB and think I’m an illegal.

THEIGGIES…what exactly do you think is false in what is being said? It isn’t like this is a NEW thing, NOR are they trying to hide it.

The first job I ever had was @ a Gordon’s Food Service just outside Detroit. Even back in the early ’90s, I would have nearly a dozen folks PER DAY (90% black…also not an exaggeration…easily only one out of 10 that did this was white) come in and buy $200 in steak and crab legs, and pay with food stamps. To a person they were wearing nicer clothes than I and many of them (I won’t say MOST, but plenty) had nicer cars than I have owned to this day…

Pretending someone is lying, just to not have to face the truth, is kind of a stupid way to live.

      @ TheIggies

      Consider what St. Paul said:
2nd Thessalonians, Chr 3: 6-12: Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.

Matthew Henry, writing in the 17th Century, summed up the effect of our present error well when he wrote, “Christianity is not to countenance slothfulness, which would consume what is meant to encourage the industrious, and to support the sick and afflicted.” He further wrote, “It is a great error and abuse of religion, to make it a cloak for idleness or any other sin. The servant who waits for the coming of his Lord aright, must be working as his Lord has commanded. If we are idle, the devil and a corrupt heart will soon find us somewhat to do.

My math may be wrong, but if 238,000 people are receiving food stamps that cost $28,000,000 per month. That would average out to $117.65 per person per month. That doesn’t seem like a lot, but if the person doesn’t need it they shouldn’t be getting it.

The problem with Texas is that it is under the voting rights act, so anything they do to try and verify the identity of voters is blocked by the Holder DoJ. Arizona’;s voters took a stand against illegal aliens collecting welfare years ago. Nappy did her level best to keep them on the roles, but it didn’t help. She even went so far as to tell state workers to not ask about citizenship when people applied for benefits. The quickest way to solve both the illegal alien issue and the welfare issue is to require a certified hard copy birth certificate for every person listed. You know the kind that Obamao won’t produce. Then stop everyone from receiving anything without a birth certificate. Don’t raise the limits for children born after being on the dole, require drug tests, and then stop all benefits after a set number of years for anyone who is not physically unable to work. I had a friend who had lost part of his leg and still worked part time. The SS administration tried to cut off his benefits despite him going from $50k a year to $15k. He took off his prosthetic and asked the judge if it looked like his leg had grown back. Likewise, I knew a 23 yr old with 3 kids who flat out stated that she was making more on welfare than she would make working, despite an associates degree in office management. (that had also been paid for with tax dollars). Her mother hadn’t held a job in over 25 years and had taught her well.

It actually does not surprise me. The Mexicans that live on the border all the way from El Paso to Brownsville know the system almost better than the Texas employees who issue them their Lone Star card. Not only that, but THE MAJORITY of these State employees in the border cities sympathize with illegals and do their very best to sign them up for every single free program they qualify for without the applicant even asking for it, more often than not, it’s because they themselves have a friend or relative that is an illegal alien living in Texas.

Nope, doesn’t surprise me either. Most of the positions that award these handouts are held by ‘la familia’. Gringo/gringa goes in…nope, too light, not ‘la familia’. Bro goes in…maybe, depends on how dark. And every where la familia is in charge, they give preferential treatment. Being a grocery checker at HEB will open your eyes to some real inequities in the Lone Star food assistance program. La Raza is alive and well in Texas and taking it’s cue from the obaba admin to really try to starve the gringo’s out. Case in point…homeless young white mother goes into food stamp office in Laredo to ask for emergency assistance…she is turned away because she is homeless and needs a permanent address for assistance. She goes out and shoots her children and then herself (something I do not agree with, no matter the reason), yet all day long emergency lone star cards are handed out to homeless illegals like skittles. Truth. Look it up. For those that don’t believe it….tough nuggies….

@zorro…you are right, it doens’t matter what nationality or ethnicity it is when you are working the system (cheating the taxpayers). The thing is, being born in S TX, raised in S TX and working in the civil system for quite a few years before quitting and opening my own place, I have seen and experienced this ‘la familia’ attitude first hand. Now, gringos are catching up quick. It’s like catching wild pigs. You set bucket of feed out in a place for a few days and let them eat. Free Food!! Then you put the catch-pen up around the feed bucket. When they are used to coming into the trap you set the trap so they can come in but not get out. After the hogs get used to being in the trap the other wild hogs see them and come in and get trapped too. This gov set the trap and now all ethnicities are entering the trap after seeing how well it worked for the others. How’s that working for the taxpayers. Right now, this country is at a tipping point where there are more takers than makers. Then what?

I also know these folks are trained by their parents to do this. It’s part of life. Like you or I would encourage our kids to go to college or get better skills for finding a job, parents down there teach their children to cheat the system. To their defense, and I know I’m going to get hammered for this, it’s all ignorance. They really don’t know any better. They don’t think you can “make it” UNLESS you cheat the system. They teach each other and cover for each other. It’s the only system they know. I’d like to think it’s getting better but less government oversight keeps bringing it back down. Let’s not forget our elected officials have a stake on whether these people stay useless to society. They’re a large voting bloc.

@axle…you’ll never hear another thing about this. It will be squashed by La Raza and people like soloman ortiz that was the dem rep for south TX for over 20 years until the last election. La familia is hard at work taking TX back with the help of the obaba admin. The 2 new darlings of the dem party, julian castro and his twin brother have been raised by a mother that openly hates whites and has stated openly and loudly that she so hates the Alamo she wishes they would tear it down. Julian Castro is now mayor of San Antonio and his brother is a dem rep in congress and actively being groomed by the dem party to take over the flagship of the dem party. They actively claim it is now time for the hispanics and latinos to retake the country that was stolen from them. While it sounds biased when put this way, even these guys want to rewrite history and take out the fact that most of the Mexican citizen ranchers and population living here fought with the Texians for freedom from a repressive regime in Mexico. They don’t like to be reminded that many of the hero’s of the Texas revolution are Mexican ranchers. There are monuments to them, but they won’t be spoken of by La Raza, except as traitors. Do some southwest history research and you’ll find out that the only people that had land stolen from them are the native americans and it was the mexicans that came in and enslaved the indians all across the southwest from Texas to California. The whites arrived a long time a

@zorro…yep, I’m Texan through and through…hispanic, white and Comanche. I don’t like to cheat anyone and I don’t want anyone cheating me. And looks don’t tell who you are, it’s your actions that give away exactly who you are. Working in the civil service sector can really open your eyes. I had to leave it and do something that would help me get renew my faith in mankind. It’s really hard to witness the inequities happening right now just for some votes.

This situation won’t be stopped in every state or any state for that matter, until we all get off our butts and do something to stop it. Just seeing all the people here having their eyes opened, is a great start.
Spend a little time reading about welfare fraud and abuse and you will be shocked.

What do you call a man who is forced (taxed) to work for another man’s food, clothes, shelter, healthcare, education…? It is the same as a man who is entirely dependent on another man for his food clothes, shelter, healthcare, education. — A SLAVE. Freedom and Responsibility are Inseparable!!

You have to take into account how the federal government is sponsoring ads in Mexico regarding how to collect welfare benefits even as a non citizen. Not to mention how many Katrina refugees refuse to leave Texas to return to Louisiana. The federal government is pushing this in Texas as well as other Red States for good reason. But, KEATON3CCC will come here tonight with his sh/t load of lies and distortions tonight.

Whoa. Rick’s bringing out the WMD argument again. WOW. You do know that Obama has spent more than Bush on war now don’t you. 1.8 trillion for Bush, 2.6 trillion for Obama. In 3 less years I might add. Doesn’t matter though. Sequester kicks in on Friday and it’s acrossed the board cuts. Now get on your knees and thank the gop for cutting defense spending and farm subsidies. Your holy grail!

      Mr. and/or Mrs. Rick1954,

This is what you must know:

If it’s a lie, then why does Obama believe it?

      It is so.

I know people who really need food stamps and get enough to get by for a little over a week.
If you do and they have Children. Please help them. Kids are Kids. Calling Welfare on Cheaters does nothing.

You know, that’s very kind of you to say, however…..

The sort of person who is greedy enough to steal several thousand dollars in benefits from our government isn’t likely using them to maintain their children. Especially when impoverished kids are also being fed breakfast and lunch by their local public school/head start program in addition to their parents EBT dole.

Actions have consequences. And lying/cheating/stealing cannot be tolerated on the basis of who might be hurt if the consequence of those actions comes to pass. That being said, if I knew of a child going hungry, OF COURSE I would do what I could to help them. But I will not enable evil people to abuse the goodwill of hardworking Americans for their own selfishness. Wrong is wrong.

      Ahh, relativism. How nice.

Two big things I can see wrong with your assertion:

      1. Halliburton is not completely on the “government dole” as it is a privately owned company that generates a large source of income on it’s own.

      2. It provides a good or service (theoretically) for the dollars it receives. Unlike welfare recipients.

That being said, there certainly could be graft with the government funding corporations (AIG anyone?) and guess what, – that’s wrong because DISHONESTY is wrong, not because of who or what might be the recipient.
