Farrakhan Urges Black Americans to Collectively Purchase Land…and Wants to Recruit Gang Members to Protect It

The Minister Louis Farrakhan, 79, delivered his annual Saviors’ Day sermon on Sunday. As is usually the case, the three-hour address covered a variety of topics ranging from current events to the faith leader’s contentious views on race relations. Of particular note was an economic plan he posited — one in which African Americans would come together to invest in land — and a pledge to reach out to gang leaders to ask them for assistance in protecting the Nation of Islam’s interests.

The Saviors’ Day address is generally a mixture of sermon and lecture. The event commemorates the founding of the Nation of Islam, which has espoused black nationalism and self-reliance since the 1930s. When President Barack Obama was elected in 2008, the resounding tone of the convention was jubilant, but Obama’s re-election took a back seat Sunday as Farrakhan said blacks still had to rely on themselves, and not leaders, to improve their situation.

“Even though one of our own has reached the highest pinnacle of the American political system, his presence has not, cannot and will not solve our problems,” Farrakhan told the crowd of men wearing navy uniforms and women dressed in white shirt suits and matching hijabs.

With 10,000 people in attendance and with a video stream of the event airing online, the reach was relatively large.

Farrakhan touched briefly on issues like Israel, Obama’s cabinet and healthier food consumption — but mostly reiterated teachings from the Chicago-based movement on a plan for blacks’ economic recovery and said the biggest priority should be the purchase of land.

For those who don’t already know, the Nation of Islam has more than 1,500 acres of farmland in Georgia. Ishmael Muhammad, the religion’s national assistant minister, told The Associated Press that the group is looking to buy thousands more acres in the Midwest.

But the more intriguing portion of the speech focused upon gangs and efforts to seek leaders and members of these groups out for the sole purposes of protecting the Nation of Islam. Here’s how DNAInfo.com describes Farrakhan’s framing of the proposal:

Instead, Farrakhan had a different idea for how to address gun violence. In addition to sending letters to black military leaders, Farrakhan said he planned to contact the city’s gang leaders to recruit gang members to “protect” any land the Nation of Islam may buy in the future.

“All you gang bangers, we know you love to shoot, but you’re killing yourselves,” Farrakhan said.

Rather than killing one another, Farrakhan spoke directly to gang leaders, telling them, “We want to make you a defender of the territories that your nickels, dimes and dollars and hours will buy.” He continued, explaining that gang bangers have much to teach the National of Islam about self-defense, while simultaneously condemning them for needless violence.

“You are the natural warriors to defend and the science of war must be taught to us so that we will protect whatever God allows us to buy or to build,” he said. “The Second Amendment has no relevance to the black community in this sense — you don’t have legal weapons. All your weapons are illegal and you’re using them like a savage people would use them.”

Farrakhan also said that he respects the Second Amendment and noted its prevalence in once helping the new American government keep from slipping back into tyranny. His tone was more tempered than the one he used to speak about guns in a separate speech recently.

  Moonstruck: What’s the “we” and “us” thing? I would expect black Americans to react to tyrannical government just like white Americans. Americans come in all colors. Judging from your statements on here I’m guessing your problem is that you are not an American. You don’t hold to American principles. In my book that means you aspire to one of two things: You either want to be a slave or a master. They both come from, and result in, poor character.   Walkabout: No, I don’t adhere to any superstitious beliefs like that. I do appreciate the goal of reducing inner city violence and promoting positive values within the black community. I do not deny those elements that smack of racism, but I see that as a natural consequence to the years of subjugation and the economic and cultural effects that had. I do not believe for a moment that the Nation of Islam has a particular hatred for all white people. It’s perfectly possible to throw some “white devil” quotes at me, but I am unchanged in that opinion.

If this was a Republican supporter, the papers would be screaming about his endorsing protection rackets. What else can you call suggesting that the gang bangers killing innocents in record numbers are suddenly upstanding citizens? It is a comlete joke to suggest gangs would offer protection of another’s property from anything except themselves. And it suggests an utter lack of reality testing that this race baiting so called ‘leader of the black community’ would believe what he is saying.

Taken at face value, Farrakhan is advocating firearm ownership for a militia to protect black property… a militia whose firearms are not legally purchased or possessed. Funny, that is being lost in the discussion, but then it does not fit the script Dustin Hoffman is apparently reading.

This is a free (as of now) Country and we can buy land if we are able but we are not able to do is to do evil and keep evildoers hanging around. Is this cat delutional? For the record about 55% of all people murdered with a gun, is commited by a black male. What percentage of those guns do you think are legally bought, and owned? What percentage of those guns will be stopped by adding new laws?

  Huh, so when minorities get together to buy a large parcel of land, have a “Gang” with guns to protect it, that’s OK, But when whites do that, such as Ruby Ridge or Waco, you should send ATF and FBI in to burn em out.   No not at all, I believe if they are calling for these group land buys and to have gangs guard it, the Govt should do the same thing they have done in the past to all of the so called “White Supremist/Survival” threats. Send in the FBI and ATF to ensure everyone of them are following all the rules, and if there is any resistence, use max force. (sarc on) Because, we all have to be fair and equal. (sarc off)

  I really don’t think Farrakhan was suggesting they spend any of their money for property. They own it already, it is OWED to them don’t you know! I believe he is suggesting they get the gangs together and just confiscate them. Why not just claim cities like detroit and chicago and kill any whiteys that try to enter. Then they can just sell us back the businesses and museums and whatever else is left of value. When they start to starve because no one knows how to work the GUVMent can then step in and take care of them. Or maybe Sally Struthers can walk around the town and show how the flies crawl on their face while they eat bowls of rice. It can be the new Africa!
