Despite a valiant effort, Fox News host Sean Hannity was unable to get Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) to admit that the United States government has a spending problem. During a discussion about the impending sequestration spending cuts on Monday, Meeks would only concede that the U.S. is still paying off former President George W. Bush’s debt.
Bush has now been out of office for nearly five years.
“We borrow as a country, Congressman, 46 cents of every dollar you guys are spending in Washington,” Hannity began. “Don’t you think there’s something immoral about stealing from those kids because they’re going to be the ones paying that back.”
Meeks responded by saying, “when the Republicans were in control that’s when we had all this debt.” He also referenced the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as big causes for today’s debt.
Comically, Hannity was actually able to complete Meek’s sentence at one point.
“What we need to do is make sure that everybody in America–”
“Pays their fair share,” Hannity interrupted.
“Has their fair share,” Meeks continued.
“I can finish your sentence for you,” the host quipped.
When Hannity later pressed Meeks about President Barack Obama racking up about $6 trillion in federal debt since taking office, the congressman would only blame the Bush administration. Bush accumulated about $4 trillion in federal debt in eight years, or two terms.
“Is there a spending problem?” Hannity pressed.
“We’re still paying off the debt that George Bush created,” Meeks repeated. “Today we have to pay back the debt of yesterday, and that’s what we have to do.”
Watch part of the segment via Fox News/WFB below:
Meeks finally admitted that America has a “debt problem” but would not say the country has a federal spending problem.
Hannity mentioned that Obama previously called the Bush administration’s $4 trillion in debt “irresponsible” and “unpatriotic.” He asked Meeks if Obama’s $6 trillion plus federal debt is “irresponsible” or “unpatriotic.”
“What he has to do is pay George Bush’s debt,” Meeks responded.
“Congressman, time to put the pants on, sit at the table and take responsibility. George Bush is out of office five years, you got to grow up,” Hannity lectured.

Feb. 26, 2013 at 6:11am2% is not nearly enough spending cuts. We should have at least 5% if not 10% and most of this can be done through attrition. Simply don’t replace government workers who quite, retire or get fired.

Feb. 26, 2013 at 9:10amCut the welfare, food stamps, SSI…. Seal the border; punish business that hire non legal workers.
When you systematically cut the welfare, those that were on it can do the work that Mexicans were doing. Claudette and Bubba can get their dead lazy **** up out of the trailer park, and does construction work, landscaping, painting…. They will no longer have time to cook the meth and break into houses.
Tyrone and Tameka can get up our of the hood, stop watching Oprah, making illegitimate babies, and get a job at the Tyson plant, plucking feathers off from chickens. Less time for crime and more time for work will help rebuild the broken families that were destroyed by democrat hand outs.
Hunger is a motivator.
For those still on welfare, make it uncomfortable. You get to only buy from a certain area of the grocery store, and the food stamps only go for such things as dry beans, dry rice, and canned vegetables. To be on the system, you must have a monthly drug test, and women must be on birth control injections.
This route will lower taxes, lower crime, fix immigration, and rebuild our poor neighborhoods into groups of hardworking, instead of money sucking leaches. The poorest folks should not be the fattest folks, and currently they are.

Feb. 26, 2013 at 10:53am“Congressman, time to put the pants on, sit at the table and take responsibility” That is true and Hanity has to put his pants on and be honest for once. Bush left office and handed the PRESIDENT a $1.2 trillion deficit run rate. The 2008-2009 budget year was Bush’s not the PRESIDENTS. And he left him the worst economy since the great depression. That combined with irresponsible tax cuts during the same period has in fact caused the majority of the current debt problem. And let’s be clear SS and Medicare did not contribute to the $10 trillion Reagan, Bush Sr. and Bush Jr. ran up in deficits. It was pure overspending on military contractors, infrastructure contractors, IT companies, etc. Follow the money people, its not the 15 year old, pregnant, crack head mother who is causing the deficit.

Your comment – “forced birth control injections That sounds like eugenics”
Nope, actually it does not. No one forces people to be on welfare, it is voluntary. If folks voluntarily want to be on the government hand out, then they ought not to be producing babies, consuming alcohol, selling drugs, committing crimes. Currently, when we look at the welfare Meccas like Detroit, Chicago, Philly, Cincinnati…. We see high rates of immorality, crime, drugs, illegitimate babies….
Sanger (hero to Hillary Clinton) specifically wanted eugenics for blacks, and it was forced, not voluntary.
The current welfare system is not working. It breeds crime, immorality, and more on the system. The war on poverty has failed.
You would also do well to remember that Sanger was a progressive.

Feb. 26, 2013 at 1:16pmGovernment spends a trillion dollars more than it takes in, right now it’s addicted to spending and democrats don’t believe that spending is the problem.
They think it’s:
in the health-care system (our president),
a ‘budget deficit problem’ (Rep. Pelosi D-CA),
a ‘paying-for problem’ (Rep. Hoyer D-MD),
a ‘Misallocation of Wealth problem’ (Sen. Harkin D-IA).
I’m surprised Harry Reid hasn’t said something like that yet, looks like he’s dropping the ball on that one. Either way they don’t believe spending is a problem, its why they won’t cut spending and that is a problem. We could hit Greece’s level of spending and deficit and the democrats still probably wouldn’t agree to ANY spending cuts. What’s wrong with that picture?.
It’s a big part of the reason we’re at the sequester, which also was the white house’s idea and the president once said he’d veto any effort to get rid of the automatic spending cuts, then he blames congress for it.

How do you get in debt, spending beyond your means, then borrowing and spending more. So Bush had a 4 T debt, now we have a 16 T debt and by some pundits figures, the actual debt is around 30 T in debt. I would say we DEFINITELY have a spending problem. We borrow a Trillion from the Chinese and then loan it, or a good portion of it, to Egypt or some other country, not an ally. And the administration really expects to be paid back, ASININE.

Feb. 26, 2013 at 2:27amLook at it this way. If my family were to find ourselves borrowing half of everything we spend despite having a good jobs then it is not a “debt problem” we are living beyond our means and SPENDING too much. Before we can dig ourselves out we would need to cut our expenses; sell the BMW, the house with the pool, stop eating steak and lobster and pull out the squirrel rifle. Then we can decide what else can be done. Robbing a rich uncle (millionaires and billionaires) at gun point is not a solution.
….and yet those on the both sides of the aisle seem unable to comprehend the very basics of financial responsibility and the consequences when you screw up. They want the gain without the pain. It may work that way in a philosophical business college class, but not in the real world.
Washington needs to get off their heroine of spending and face the music.

Feb. 26, 2013 at 4:12amO.K. Meeks, class is in session. If little johnny borrows $4 from a kid at school, and doesn’t pay it back, but his brother Barry says he is responsible for the debt and gets $6 dollars from Mom and Dad, why is their still a debt owed? Could it be that little Barry didn’t put on his “Big Boy pants”, and pay the debt like he was supposed to? This whole “blame Bush” B.S. is getting really old. Bush wasn’t perfect, but $4 trillion in 8 years with wars in Iraq and Afganistan isn’t quite the same as $6 trillion in 4 years now is it. Face the facts, sequestration is nothing. It doesn’t even scratch the surface of the spending habits that need to go, and go NOW. The money saved be the sequestration isn’t even 3% of total government spending, and we are still digging ourself deeper in debt, we just stopped digging long enough for the P.O.S./POTUS to play a round of golf. Hannity is right, grow up!

However, I thought he did alright here and found that he only interrupted when the stuff that Meeks was saying made absolutely no sense at all. Still paying off Bush’s debt? Ok, but who is going to pay off Obama’s? Debt problem? Debt problems are caused by spending problems. Minimum wage? Not effective at improving quality of life, and anyway is treating (ineffectively) the symptom rather than the disease.

Feb. 26, 2013 at 1:53amAfter watching the second video, I had a sudden thought.
Consider that even the most fiscally myopic leftwinger must realise that this catastrophic rate of borrowing and spending cannot possibly last without severe consequences.
Consider also that, by their repeated comments, they cannot change tracks without losing an enormous amount of credibility, which would likely cost them dearly in the mid-terms.
Is it possible that they are actually privately welcoming the sequester?
Are they deliberately doing nothing to avoid it with the intention of blaming the republicans for the fallout?
Could they intend to allow the oh-so-necessary cuts, while at the same time using any subsequent public resentment for this against the republicans in the mid-term elections?
Could they then not also present a host of other unrelated financial problems as the fault of the republicans by bundling them up and attaching them to the sequester?
Is that possible?
It might be. No-one has ever accused Mr Obama of having a shortage of rat cunning…

Feb. 25, 2013 at 11:28pmYour seemingly off color comment is an apt comment. It should be used. It would be very very effective in bringing shame to people who need a little shame.

Feb. 25, 2013 at 11:45pmSpank,
I normally would find a comment like that more than off color, but not here. If you pull out a legal dictionary and look up slave, servant or subject…all are applicable.
When people give up the ability to be on their own and become a “subject” of smarmy politicians like this, they have chosen bondage. Another word people should understand.
The result is a dependent class doing the political bidding of their masters free from independent thought or desires. It is a sentence of permanent underclass and misery.
Yes…it is Steve the free lunch slave. Agreed.

Feb. 25, 2013 at 11:15pmSean, you missed. You asked a democrat about morality.
To a democrat moral=racist
To a democrat moral=sexist
To a democrat moral=homophobic
To a democrat moral=judgemental
To a democrat moral=hateful
To a democrat morality is best kept relative and a living word.
To a democrat it is moral to steel from children as long as it makes you money and gains you power.
It took a media to promote the moral view of the nazi party without question. It took the American media to promote the agenda of the democrat party without question. Morals it the last thing that democrats understand.
These guys and gals steel from the future. Hardly moral.

Feb. 25, 2013 at 11:13pmAll this guy wanted to do is blame bush. When asked simply, “Do we have a spending problem, NOW, TODAY?” So his answer was “Well, George Bush started a war that we didn’t pay for..” And it went down hill from there. Typical liberal, can’t answer a straight question, or a gay question.

Feb. 25, 2013 at 11:33pmHe does not seem to know how to converse.
What he did on Hannity tonite, he has done every other time.
There needs to be a mute button on his microphone in order to hear anyone; including Hannity.
Since networks never use one with Meek, the channel is changed or, it’s potty-time.
>It would be an expensive shame to break the screen –ya know.

Well you have gone and proved it, for many months I have debated if you were really that stupid. You have made it clear that you probably tie a string around your finger so that you don’t forget to breath. I guess with this president in office it might be nice to be so totally freaking ignorant. Don’t forget about that string now.

Feb. 25, 2013 at 11:30pmHe asked a question that had a yes or no answer. And instead got spin. Hannity was unwilling to let the other guy spin the debate and allow the guy to spout Demonicrat talking points all night long. That has happened to him before and they try it every time on his show. I’m Pretty happy The Blaze is casting him in a fairly positive light here. This was a pretty good attempt but this is Status Quo for Demonicrats and their mouthpieces.
