Earlier this month, Summer Schreiner, a 15-year-old student at Clearlake Middle School in Cocoa, Fla., was told to change her pro-abstinence t-shirt after officials deemed it “inappropriate.” The teen acquired the shirt, which read, ”Don’t drink and park… accidents cause kids,” at a Christian conference she recently attended. But the message was apparently too offensive for education officials — so they took action.
“I got through lunch, and on my way back, the assistant principal tells me I need to go to the office and change my shirt,” she told WOFL-TV. ”I was pretty upset. I thought it was silly. It’s not like I was wearing a curse word or something that was promoting violence.”
Schreiner got the shirt at “The Silver Ring Thing,” an abstinence conference that is held in cities across the nation. During the event, teens pledge to wait until they’re married to have sex. In exchange for this promise, they get a silver ring.
WOFL-TV has more:
According to the young girl’s mother, Angela, the most humiliating part of the experience came when her daughter was asked to change into a shirt the school designates for students who do not have appropriate attire. The message on the new t-shirt read, “Tomorrow I will dress for success.”
The family found this particularly humiliating, because they believe Schreiner made a positive life choice at “The Silver Ring Thing” and that the t-shirt she originally wore simply reaffirmed that. In the words of her mother: ”It was really humiliating for her, because she came dressed for success.”
The school district has doubled-down on its decision to force the young girl to change her shirt, citing a dress code policy that disallows any clothing “which contains sexually explicit or oriented wording.” There is also a restriction on any dress that “infringes on the rights of others.”
The family disagrees that the shirt violates these standards, citing textbooks that educate students with similar messages as what was found on Schreiner’s shirt. District officials, though, remain unmoved by these arguments.
“This is not a situation of whether or not the district agrees or disagrees with sexual abstinence among teenagers,” explained Michele Irwin, director of communications for the district. “It’s about the fact there is sexual innuendo on the shirt, and so we believe it violated our dress code policy.”

Feb. 25, 2013 at 10:14amOne of Communism’s main goals was to remove God from our culture. They knew that if we remained a moral nation, we could not be defeated. They have succeeded in no small part due to our corrupted school system. Communist infiltrators have embedded themselves in our communities and in our government.
Agree with him or not, we all know what happened to McCarthy when he tried to make an issue of it. You just know he is looking down and saying…”I told you so.” Robert Welch, former President of the John Birch Society, made several speeches IN THE 50′s about this very thing. You can watch/listen to them on-line. Very chilling, indeed!
Like I tell people…”you don’t have to believe that your right’s come from God, but you better not believe your right’s come from man.”

Feb. 25, 2013 at 9:01amWorking in a public school, it’s impossible to forget the nature of the battle, or the stakes. To withdraw is to capitulate. “Tomorrow I will dress for success…” I put the t-shirt back on that they banned, and return with the ACLJ. Students teach as aptly as teachers, when they understand the meaning of the word success.

Apr. 14, 2013 at 12:33amSchool rules do not abrogate the constitution
Capitol Square & Advisory Bd. v. Pinette, 515 U.S. 753, 760 (1995) (plurality opinion); see also Mergens, 496 U.S. at 250. In fact, the right to persuade, advocate, or evangelize a religious viewpoint implicates the very reason the First Amendment was adopted.
Moreover, school dress code policies that are overly broad and give school administrators unbridled discretion in prohibiting certain clothing may be unconstitutional vague. A New York federal district court found that a school code that prohibited “[a]ny activity, affiliation and/or communication in connection with a non-school sanctioned club/group, including fraternal organizations or gangs” was unconstitutional because it gave administrators too much discretion in implementing the policy and included vague terms. Lopez v. Bay Shore Union Free Sch. Dist., 668 F. Supp. 2d 406 (E.D. N.Y. 2009) (citing Chalifoux, 976 F. Supp. 659).
The ACLJ continues to represent students around the country whose constitutional rights are being violated by school officials that wish to squelch their religious speech.

Feb. 25, 2013 at 8:43amI’m not a fan of violence, nor do I seek to injure others as a way of enjoyment. In fact, violence causes me personal grief. Another human should not be made to suffer. However, on the other side of the coin, these school officials are little tyrants, enforcing their own agenda and ideals instead of imparting a true education. So to hear from my mouth, that these same school officials need to have their hides beaten to within an inch of their lives for this dictorial garbage under the umbrella of a Constitutional Republic they happen to hate, is absolutely revealing. If school officials got that sort of punishment each time they affront a citizen in this manner, this type of communist garbage would evaporate.

Feb. 25, 2013 at 9:22amIt is…. if a shirt with “abstinence” is. The parents of children in that school should be there in force to shout-down the infringement of the young lady’s belief.
What Americans don’t get, unfortunately, is the fact that you don’t have to agree with a persons’ belief in a particular issue, but we need to agree with the right to express YOUR BELIEF in an issue.
The Constitution is supposed to protect the right of the 1% to express their belief that the other 99% do not agree with.
Therefore, what the administrator did was, really, un-Constitutional. I would agree that a t-shirt showing a vulgar sex-act, saying all people of a particular race are bad,or expressing a belief in killing someone because of their race would cross the line.
This girl took away no one’s right to engage in pre-marital sex by simply wearing that abstinence shirt. She simply expressed her view.

Feb. 25, 2013 at 9:04amSlightly, don’t you think? Schools teach sex education and, I’m sure, the right to choose for young women. This is an outrage! This school district should, then, be forced to remove all curriculum that has anything to do with sex.
The girl should have forced the school to send her home rather than be humiliated by the shirt she was made to wear. I would have been in that school and in the face of that administrator.
I’ve been through this with a grand-daughter who was harassed by bullies in HS. I had a personal meeting with the principal, and he got my message that they had failed completely to protect her. The V-Prin had never informed the principal of the verbal abuse/intimidation she suffered.
The abuse was swept under the rug by the V-Prin, even though my gr-daughter met with him late Sept to inform him of what was happening. His reply? BONE UP!
Never forget that while schools say they have a no-tolerance policy, some will not report incidences so as to avoid scrutiny by State officials. This is what happened in my gr-daughters case. I was livid, and wrote a lenghty, scathing article in the local after it was over. BTW, my top 10% GD did not attend the Sr Prom, or graduation due to possible heckling by the co-instigators of the star quarterback who, after being denied attending those events, was reinstated.
He was later expelled from college for drug offenses. HA! PUNK!

Feb. 25, 2013 at 9:56amLet me explain how stupid people are and, thusly, what we are up against in our schools.
My grandaughter, unfortunately, had dated that quarterback early in her Sr year of HS until he developed a habit of hitting her HARD on the legs AND screaming at her. Of course, his ex and her friends got involved, eggs were thrown at my daughter and son in-laws home prior to the senior year commencing.
The school year starts, along with the intimidation. At about that time (late Sept), my grandaughter stopped dating the sob. As things got worse at school, my G-D spoke with two different V-Prin’s for the section she took classes in. NEITHER V-Prin EVER spoke to the Administrator about the problems my G-D was facing.
In MAY, when things became intolerable (I had been unaware until then), I and my Daughter sat down with the Administrator. He actually said he was unaware of any of the problems my grand-daughter was having! Red flags went up! The quarterback (class Pres) and 2 girl instigators were pervented from going to the Sr Prom or the graduation because of physical threats both at school and on social networking sites.
Letters to the editor expressed outrage over the unfair treatment to those 3 perps. One letter even said..”I don’t know the kids or anything about what they did, but the punishment is too harsh.”
Can you believe that statement? She admitted knowing nothing, but knew that the punishment was too harsh!
This stupidity is what we face in changing things in our s
