Restaurant Owner Finds Dedicated Teen Walking 10 Snowy Miles for Job Interview — Guess Where He’s Working Now
Art Bouvier, the owner of a New Orleans-inspired restaurant located in Indianapolis saw a young man trudging through the early morning snow and ice last week. The teen stopped to ask Bouvier — who owns Papa Roux Po Boys and Cajun Food– how much further it might be to his final destination and was told it was six to seven miles.
“He thanked me and continued on,” Bouvier, who also goes by Papa, wrote of the encounter in a now viral Facebook post. “He could have asked me for money for a bus. In fact I quite expected him to. He didn’t. He just started walking.”

Art (or Papa) Bouvier (Image: Fox 59 screenshot)
To a local news station, Fox 59, Bouvier added that the teen later said he wouldn’t have money for a bus ride until he got a job.
Bouvier continued in his post that 15 minutes later he was in the car and told his wife to pull over when he spotted the teen — still walking.
That’s when he found out the 18-year-old named Jhaqueil Reagan had intended to walk a full 10 miles for a job interview. The Bouviers gave Reagan a ride the rest of the distance — but that’s not all.
“I’m thinking to myself, here’s a kid walking almost 10 miles in the ice and slush and snow for the hope of a job at minimum wage,” Bouvier told Fox 59. “That’s the kind of story your parents used to tell, my parents used to tell, up both ways in the snow.”
Bouvier took Reagan’s phone number advising him to keep his interview, but noted he would see if he could hire him at Papa Roux.
In a phone interview with TheBlaze, Bouvier went on to say he told Reagan whatever the other shop offered him, he would double it. Bouvier then told us that Reagan later learned although he did well in the interview with the other establishment, the position had already been filled.
“It’s been a while since I’ve met someone so young with a work ethic like that!” Bouvier continued writing.
When he saw Reagan walking two hours ahead of his interview to ensure he would be on time, Bouvier told TheBlaze he knew it was a sign of his work ethic.
“I tell every single applicant, I can show you the ropes, but what I can’t teach is work ethic. Show up. Be on time. Don’t disappoint your crew,” Bouvier said, giving the example of poor work ethic as those who call at 9:55 to say they won’t make their 10:00 shift. “You know before 9:55 you aren’t going to make that shift. …I don’t think I’ll ever get that 9:55 phone call from [Reagan].”
Fox 59 had Reagan’s reaction to the news that he got a job at Papa Roux Friday:
“I’m lucky I met him,” Reagan said. “I’m really lucky I met him.”
Reagan said it’s been hard finding opportunities. He was forced to quit school two years ago when his mother died. He completed his GED while staying home to care for his siblings.
Now that he has a job, and a following on Facebook?
“It’s crazy. I don’t even know. It’s really crazy,” Reagan said. “My heart’s just racing right now. I’m just too excited, just excited to start.”
“I can show you the ropes tonight if you want. We’re really busy in there,” Papa said to Reagan.
“Thank you very much,” Reagan said.

Watch the report:
Bouvier told TheBlaze he wasn’t even sure he would have enough work to justify a new employee when he brought Reagan on.
“I do now though,” he added.
A local writer for the website Positively Indy, shared an account of this story and wrote it is the “terrific” food and stories like this that have him continuing to support Papa Roux.
“The people is where the magic is in this endeavor,” Jason Bean wrote.
It’s a gift of hospitality held by Bouvier and his wife that he told TheBlaze makes people feel welcome at his restaurant.
“I don’t think the Midwest culture knows what that feels like,” he said, adding though that he has noticed more and more places focusing on the customer relationship rather than the transaction in recent years.
In addition to having a job that would be only a three mile walk from home instead of 10 miles, the local transit authority IndyGo gave Reagan a one-year pass free of charge.
The Facebook post of the story issued Friday had more than 7,000 likes within a few hours, according to Fox 59, and as of Monday has more than 14,000 likes.
This story has been update to include information from TheBlaze’s interview with Papa Roux owner Art Bouvier.

To have to quit school to take care of your siblings is almost unheard of these days with Children’s Services sticking their nose into everyone’s business.
God bless Papa Bovier for seeing the potential in this kid and giving him a chance. I only wish more kids were like Mr. Reagan.

Posted on February 25, 2013 at 6:38pmBooker Taliaferro Washington ~ Booker T. walked from Malden, West Virginia to Hampton, Virginia to attend Hampton Institute. I said walked because the trip was 386 miles. When he arrived he was dirty and didn’t have the appearance of the type of student they were looking for. Miss Mackie, the head teacher thought it but didn’t say so to Booker, instead she told him that one of the classrooms needed to be swept. Booker T. went to work, swept it 3 times, mopped it, washed the walls and dusted everything. When Miss Mackie walked into the room it was spotless, on the spot she hired Booker T. Washington as the schools janitor which allowed Mr. Washington to work his way through school.

He’s simply saying that the work ethic of ‘most’ young people today is anemic compared to the work ethic of ‘most’ young people a generation ago. He’s not bashing this young man at all – he’s frustrated that society has decayed to the point that a great young man like this would stand out in our society. Not too long ago a young man like this was normal and would never show up on the news. Try to understand others comments better before you make your own.

And to think 47+% of the people drawing gov’t support from soup to nuts won’t get off their duffs long enough to find a job (any job) to help support their families or themselves……….no, no, it’s easier to live off the fat of the land, welfare and unemployment. It time to trim the fat so more people can learn to look after themselves like this sweet young man who did what most of us have heard all our lives from our parents, that they walked miles to school in snow or heat, and he did it to find a JOB.. Wow, so rare in this day & age to find a person who believes he must work to eat.
Remember when people could only draw unemployment for a few months? Now, it’s years. I think that keeps most from looking for work, & have heard comments that they “don’t want to lose unemployment to take a job” for only a little more money. A Nation of TAKERS and we’ve encouraged them to be slackers. Pull your own weight for a change. ( this is not for those disabled)

Sure it sucked having to lug the papers around but it sure was nice to get that check at the end of the month. I employ a lot of people that will never get a raise and never get any benefits, it’s the nature of the job. Some of them are so good at the job, they really do deserve more money, but there is no reason for me to pay more. For each that quit, I have a dozen waiting to take their place. So, is minimum wage enough to survive…especially if you have dependents? Maybe this kid will have the where with all to learn how to cook or manage the restaurant, but even if he wants to move up and expand his opportunities, the opportunity to do that has to be available.

Where in the world did you get the idea that your supposed to be able to afford everything with a minimum wage job? Those jobs are for people that want to gain experience so you can move up. Posted on February 26, 2013 at 1:42amMinimum wage is a hindrance to advancement. When you pay someone a wage which is not proportionate to the job it only encourages them to stay in that job. More money is an incentive to advance your knowledge and lot in life. If I had been paid a “living wage” at KFC as a teenager I might still be there instead of living my dream. We need to encourage people to live their dream, not settle for a “living wage” and to rely on themselves and not the government.

Posted on February 25, 2013 at 5:19pmBIOHAZARD, Excellent observation and oh so true.
I do like your new avatar, considering the wife and I have more than enough cats out here where we live. But, they do earn their keep. Got nine month old Spanky rolling around in my lap right now. He’s solid black and almost ten pounds now. Should be a great field mouse hunter too.

Posted on February 25, 2013 at 6:15pmThanks, RJ! This was one of my cats who has since gone on to the Rainbow Bridge. He was a lazy fatty (18 pounds) but oh so lovable. Come to think of it, all of my cats were Garfield fat… Hmmm…. :)
We have our dogs now – no more kitties as it turns out I’m allergic. I miss all of them, though. I just don’t miss them sleeping on my head/pillow at night. LOL!

Posted on February 25, 2013 at 6:43pmBIOHAZARD, I hear you dear, but when my not long departed Mom was found to be allergic cats she kicked in for the medication. Their cat Sandy and beautiful Siamese and Birman mix who had the colors of the Siamese with the fur length common to the Birman. I had tears in my eyes when it was me while home on leave who had to take him to the vet to be put down for severe kidney failure. I had gotten to really know him over the years. We have one dog and love her dearly, and she gets along wonderfully with the cats. Being a female she was very maternal dealing with the kittens nine months ago. It was almost funny.

Posted on February 25, 2013 at 6:51pmBIOHAZARD, Forgot to mention that I downloaded the avatar pic and increased the size as much as I could. Great looking specimen, and we have had a number of large ones in the past with one exceeding 25 pounds a number of years ago. I feel for your allergies and have a number myself now at my age. I know you miss your buddy there. Our largest is only about 14 to 15 pounds and we will know for certain since he has an appointment for the first of the month.

Posted on February 25, 2013 at 3:51pmBravo to this kid. He Will go a long way. You can teach skills (assuming basic ability). You cannot teach drive. Either they have it or they do not. I hire someone with drive every time.

Posted on February 25, 2013 at 5:23pmIt took me almost a full page of comments before stumbling on the exact thought I had about this wonderful story. Something (or more like someone) compelled this young man to go through such lengths for a minimum wage job and that same power compelled Mr. Bouvier to not just blank out the first meeting from his mind.
There is hope for this nation.

Posted on February 25, 2013 at 3:46pmJeez, now the guy is making the kid lazy, he only has to walk 3 miles instead of the 10. What’s next, he will actually pay him more than minimum wage and actually train him at his job. That is what’s wrong with these lazy teens now days, just expecting handouts, like Papa is giving him.
Seriously though, I really wish this young man the best, with a work ethic like that, he will really go far.

When I moved out on my own (at 17) I worked everyday as a machinist and tool operator. I joined the Air Force a few years later and one of my first supervisors kept yelling at me to take it easy. everytime there was downtime, we would go back to the shop, I would grap a broom and start cleaning or go in the tool room and start organizing things. I would never sit still. He always would tell me, “The other guys arent’ going to like you, you are making them look bad.” Hey, I was paid by the hour when I worked as a civilian, and was taught to earn your pay. Even now I always try to teach my son to look around, and if you see something that needs done, do it.

Posted on February 25, 2013 at 3:41pmThis is what this generation needs to show the rest of us…that they have the work ethic, grit & determination that the rest of us have had to show when times got tough. I am so thankful that Poppa picked him up & can give him a job…both of these men are great Americans! Kudos!!

Posted on February 26, 2013 at 1:56amThat’s a New Orleanian for you! New Orleans gets a bad rap sometimes. I grew up here. You will never find a more friendly or hospitable folk than in NOLA. We love those who come to our great city. Unfortunately, DEMS have run the city for TOO LONG and are ruining it.
