Law Abiding, Taxpaying Gun Owner Defends Ownership of AR 15 Rifle in Letter to the Editor

Joe Minney, of Chillicothe, Ohio, is a self-described law-abiding, taxpaying American citizen who owns an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. He selected the weapon for a number of reasons, including home defense, hunting and even pest control.

Unfortunately, he says many Americans get their “knowledge” about guns from “movies and TV shows.” This leaves many people uninformed and easily deceived amid the ongoing gun control debate. In a focused letter to the editor of the Chillicothe Gazette, Minney explains why he chose to purchase an AR-15, making the case for responsible gun owners.

“I am a law abiding, taxpaying citizen that selected an AR-15 rifle to own. I considered the activities I like to do with weapons and knowing my limited money I could spend, the AR-15 was the best choice,” he began.

Minney selected to use an AR-15 for home defense for the weapon’s quality design, accuracy and ease of use. Here he implements some common sense:

I selected the AR-15 as my Home Defense weapon. My rifle has a collapsible stock, in other words, I can shorten it up by about eight inches. This allows for greater maneuvering around my furniture and house in case I have an intruder. Unfortunately, most Americans gain their “knowledge” of weapons from movies and TV shows. The action hero or TV cop superstar fires one or two shots and the bad guy crumbles. This is not reality. Ask any combat veteran or police officer gunfight survivor. Better still, go online to YouTube and watch real life dash cam videos of law enforcement gunfights. Many times, the bad guy is shot multiple times before being stopped. Last year, a highly skilled and trained Columbus Police officer was attacked by a knife-wielding crazed man. The officer shot this guy seven times and still had to have multiple officers assist in subduing him. A famous picture of a mad man is in nearly every law enforcement textbook. It shows the body of a drug-crazed man who was shot 33 times with 9mm bullets by police officers. The complete story is the man walked two city blocks and climbed a flight of stairs before succumbing to his gunshot wounds. This is the real world!

Recently, four gun-carrying people invaded a home in a high class neighborhood of Gahanna during the day time. All four participated in beating and robbing the home owners. If I, as a legal gun owner, faced this kind of threat, I would have to fire at least two or three shots per bad guy to stop the threat on my family. This is eight to [sic] bullets. Obviously, this exceeds both the seven and 10-round magazine capacity that others are promoting to legislate over [U.S.] law abiding citizens.

Minney explained that the AR-15 can actually use three different types of shells. He bought a 22-caliber conversation kit so he can use the rifle to go squirrel hunting. He said he prefers the .22 bullet at times because he eats what he kills.

He continued: “Using the .223-caliber or 5.56-mm shells I can assist farmers in controlling very costly pests on their farms. Groundhogs cause millions of dollars of damage each year throughout the country. Farmland and crops are heavily damaged from these rodents.”

“The airport in Columbus had to hire sharpshooters to solve their groundhog problem. It was reported that their runways, taxiways and buildings were being ruined by these burrowing, disease-carrying rodents. One can do a net search and find hundreds of news articles about the costly damage to golf courses, and local, state and federal highways and bridges. Groundhogs are very elusive and must be hunted from a distance. The sights on the AR-15 provide for these 100 to 200-yard shots.”

Additionally, Minney said he uses his AR-15 to help control the coyote population in his area, which are at “epidemic condition” in many states.

“These predators have invaded city and urban areas. The news media in all areas have reported dog and cat owners that have had their family pets attacked and killed by coyotes,” he added. “Shockingly, there have been people attacked and killed by coyotes in the U.S. and Canada in recent years.”

Finally, he said one of his hobbies is “target practicing in safe areas.”

“By using the 22 caliber shell at three cents per piece I can shoot many times for a relative low cost. Then, I can convert the rifle over and fire a few 5.56mm shells at 46 cents per piece to practice my accuracy,” he wrote.

“These are the main five reasons I selected to own an AR-15 rifle. I share this because I want to assist in finding true and workable solutions to the gun violence. I would welcome open dialogue in discussing gun ownership and the expectation of a safe society,” the gun owner concluded.

      Very good, detailed, and factual. Translated=liberals will never read it.

      They prefer to get their information from the state controlled media and shrivelled up old crows like Dianne Finkstink. She made a statement not long ago that no one else has fought for gun control over the last 20 years as much as she has. The fact that that old douchebag can serve 20 + years in government is astounding in and of itself.

      One thing is for certain; liberals like her who can stand before the American People and spout lies that they know to be lies all for the purpose of passing their agenda, will one day overplay their hands and the people will call their bluff. Then we will see what they are made of.

      I have an ar15 because it is one of three guns i know. i was a mortar man in the Infantry. I was trained on the ar 15 and can shoot what i see, i was trained on the 45 and lets be frank, the 45 is is more of a noise maker and i was trained on the 50 cal, The 50 cal is nice but it is too big to carry around house and when the barrel gets white from being hot, you have to change the barrel.
      The reason why the obamunists want the ar15 is hundreds of millions of ex military can also shoot what they see with it and it is a threat to communism. Any hunter or shooter will tell you that any deer hunting rifle is much more dangerous to the human body then the rodent varmint 223

      Most Liberals cannot read and the other part just does not care……There are only a few that have had a chance to buy an AR and they barely know how to use it.

      Liberals are a self destruct type crowd, I use to hang out with some and they are just self destructive, otherwise they would be Conservative and live a normal life like all of us……They have one plan and the plan is party party party…..Period.

      The AR 15 uses a .223 which the projectile is not much bigger than a .22…Its a sniper rifle with a 30round magazine…..But in close quarters I would use my Moss 500 or my police issue 40 Glock…..The AR in my opinion is not the one I want to use unless I had a target at 200+ yrds.

      All the police out there think that its really cool if they go along with the gun ban now….But it will be a whole new story once they retire and they want to protect their families from Lewis Farrakhan’s Army…….Something to think about Blue State LE.

      ishka4me……you are right…..a 308 round will take down a target where as an AR15 round might not…….If the left would just enforce and arrest the Evil doers then we would never need protection……But the left can never do its job and we as people are a social bunch, we can only be cooped up in a Gov office for so long…….just like Obama going Golfing…We too are a social bunch, that is why we go to Church…..But not the ones where the preachers Yell at us.

      Since the m16 or ar 15 was used in the military over 50 million service members can shoot what they see with this rifle. It could be 20 years since you last touched one and you can take it apart and re assemble in seconds.
      Anybody that hunts will tell you the ar 15 round which is uncommon in the civillian world has 62 grain weight.That is the actual weight of the projectile to you lay people. it is a small round. Now your typical deer hunting round has over 140 grain weight and several popular rounds have significantly more weight.
      My objective is not to say , hey, why take the ar 15 when deer hunters can still keep their guns, no, that is not my style.
      We all saw the inauguration where the secret service confiscated the bolts of the Marins’ rifles. They fear a coup de tat. Millions of center right veterans trained in the ar 15 is a threat to the communists. They don’t fear deer hunters.

      You select a weapon for war against tyrants (whom you’ll probably never see), specifically, the agents of tyrants whom they will send against you. They’ll come at you armored.       Folks………it’s NOT about guns; it’s about the ‘state’ (i.e. government) dictating every facet of your life. Because the ‘********’ think they are smarter than YOU and YOU are too STUPID to manage your own affairs.

      As BHO said, the Constution is a list of ‘Can’ts’ instead of a list of ‘Shoulds’….The government should provide ‘affordabel energy’; a good education” a good job; and the list goes on just like the reckless spending………..When the ‘REAL’ Sequestration hits, BHO will be now where to be found….trust me.

      Thanks for the link. I intend to share it with my son-in-law who believes my AR15 is a M16. I have shown him the rifle and described the function and difference between the two rifles. He continues to talk about bans on “weapons of war”. In most instances, he is a reasonable and friendly person. I believe he thinks I am a conspiracy theory veteran who is paranoid. I also think he is afraid of guns.

      I also believe that trying to present facts to the anti-gun advocates is a waste of time. They are emotionally bought in to their belief system. For some reason, they believe that banning guns will stop crime. Our fact based points mean nothing to their inbred beliefs.

      Please sign an executive order lowering the price of AR15 ammo (223 & 5.56). The high cost of ammo is hurting the middle class. While you’re at it, please lower gasoline prices, electricity and natural gas too. These are the things hurting middle class the most and I know you care deeply about us :)

      People like the letter writer, and The Blaze, are seriously ******* me off. This buys into the framework of the argument that the gun grabbers have set up, and all in a mad attempt to appear reasonable and responsible to the people who don’t care about that one bit.

      The “debate”, if there ever was one, is OVER! There’s only one way to oppose gun control at this point, and that’s to say HELL NO! They can, and will, do whatever they want with the laws and regulations. I will not comply with those laws. Anyone who comes to my home to enforce those laws WILL BE KILLED. Then I will continue to kill until they overwhelm and kill me.

      That is the message that needs to be screamed from the mountaintops! It’s the only argument that has any chance of stopping the enforcement of new unconstitutional gun laws. Obama will do whatever he wants with the power he has seized for his office, then he’ll sit back and laugh as two goups of people, cops and legal gun owners, who should not be shooting each other, do exactly that. The only way to stop it is to induce FEAR in the law enforcement community so that they refuse to comply with orders to enforce unconstitutional gun laws.

    These stories are a waste of time other than to tell us there are others who feel as we do. No one with a left poisoned brain will ever pay any attention to the common sense of these discussions. Discussion is simply a way for them to promote their brand of liberal religion. They are deciples of the religion and are only interested in rationalizing to us foolish ones why their brand of control has to happen. My State Assembly Person, Barbara Lifton is a classic case. She is an Activist in a government position. Not interested in representing anything unless it pushes forward her brand of liberal religious philosophy, especially relative to gun control. As most progressives are, she simply was always looking for the opportunity to tighten that leash…sandy hook gave the political capital..and now all discussion is simply to deflect or rationalise that tactical move in a much larger stratigic game. We need to get beyond these discussions of logic and move to the place they are…how to achieve stratigic shifts in power. They have it, the constitution is still in their way to flex their muscles unconditionally. We want to keep our freedoms….we better get creative fast, they are way ahead of us.

      I will say that the left doesn’t care what you have to say or if it makes sense or not, they just want what they want. But I will tell everyone this I Have had a few candid conversations with local cops and and 2 sheriffs and they all said the same thing. confiscation is not going to be there job. That makes me feel a little better. The general tone was along the lines of’ “why should I put myself and the law abiding public at risk over a bullcrap political issue. Knocking on doors and trying to take weapons away from people is very serious business. It all sounds easy in concept, but try to put it into practice and a bad outcome is certain.” The boots on the ground are not going to go along with this.. So if big mouth Cuomo in New York wants our guns he better not count on local cops or sheriffs or the public to go along.. I think the issue is going to backfire on him big-time. !

      Jlightening I beg to differ with you but Como already has the statepolice picking up weapons. Look at the Army Sgt that can get up to 7 years for just having 6 EMPTY mags that could hold over 10 rounds.

      It was an illegal search and sezure then they arrested him. No in NY the Leo’s are definitely NOT on the peoples side!

    220 volts wired to all the exterior door knobs with a good ground for the attacker to stand on does a good job. he or she will fry like a french fry in deep fat. Plus nail mats, a rubber matt home or car with spikes pounded through the back sides all the way through then space them around the floor areas needed and all along the entrance way to pierce the feet and shoes. Now if they get farther than that I will have been all ready with my 20 gauge shot gun to do the last operation on these criminals. Some precautions are a little extra but they work good and are readily available in your home just need some lamp wire and a plug in receptacle or you can use 120 volts found in most electrical outlets. Just remember to tell your wife and kids. and next door neighbors. You can activate these with motion detectors also just give the criminal time to get in the 1st door then fry him, when the motion detector detects his presence. You can also do windows with a wire grid close enough together to get both neutral and hot wires to fry the Crook.

      All of which is illegal. You can not booby-trap your home to secure it against invaders. You can use force, sometimes deadly, against an home invasion but you can not use booby traps. A trap can’t discriminate against an invader or a child pulling a prank.

      You are absolutely correct. There is a false assumption among the more conservative citizenry that we have to explain our actions to avoid being villified. Frankly? Screw it. The more and more we cowar to the pinko’s who believe they never have to explain anything and everything they do while judging us, the more of our freedoms they will and do steal. Though I’ll admit I will prefer my shotgun in the event of a home invasion, that doesn’t mean my .223 or .308 ARs would not get the job done just as safely. There’s just something about a shotgun that is just… awesome… especially when I can get a bullpup kit for it since I’m about to shell out $2,000 for a KSG on Gun Broker.

    Silly me, I ran out and bought a double barrel shotgun per Uncle Joes advice. When I heard a noise outside last night I ran out on my balcony and shot it in the air. Killing my neighbors dog and an landing me in jail…..When I got home my house was empty …… robbed blind. Including all my other guns which are now illegally out on the street………Thanks Uncle Joe. Your wife needs to divorce you.

    Great Sales Job! I am educating myself about guns, and have been wondering what to get. We have many of the same problems, and the purposes that I desire a gun are similar to his. I’m considering the AR-15, and he makes some good points!

      good luck finding one…either the government is buying them all up.. (they placed an order of 7000 at DHS) or they are buying up all the ammo (DHS, FEMA, and SS placed orders in the range of 200 million rounds)

    The 2nd amendment is clearly written in black and white. It is immediately understood when the see the words>>Shall not be infringed< That part tells it all, that's your go ahead to erase any and all attackers to your home and violations of your 2nd amendment rights. This apply s to all attackers Foreign and Domestic including Tyrannical Government attackers as well. A side not Guns are also good for Hunting . Do have a great day!

    My wife and I were in the market to add a home defense weapon to our collection. We went shopping for a 12 gauge shotgun. My wife is 5’2″ and (behind closed doors call her T-rex…in fun) has a short reach. The 12 gauge was not a possibility. The AR-15 with its collapsible stock was a perfect fit! Additinally she is a great shot and it has very little kick so she can shoot it ‘ti lthe range closes! Plus, she likes how intimidating it makes her look ;)

      For inside the house a better fit would be a shotgun in the so-called assault configuration, and you can have them in 20-gauge, which your T-Rex could handle well. A 20-gauge stuffed with #4 or larger buckshot would handle anyone wanting to terrorize you in your house.

      And no joke, the big makers make smaller versions of their full size long guns… Rem, Moss, Benelli, just about all do a juvie size that would fit her. Hard to beat a shotgun in close.

    Mr Minney is exactly right and makes his point very well.
    A disturbing number of people have never handled let alone fired a firearm of any type, they get their “information” form movies and television. I’ve had the opportunity on many occasions to explain that a shotgun is not a weapon of mass destruction. It will not fire a giant cloud of destruction filling an entire room with death.
    9 pellets, patterns the size of a softball at close range, and if your target is “under the influence” and wearing a heavy leather coat or just has friends, you may need several additional rounds.

    Those that would want to limit or deny our rights to keep and bear arms have an agenda in which gun ownership does not fit well. They all talk about hunting and sport shooting, ignoring what the second amendment really means. They also want to ban the “assault weapon” even though it is used in only 1-3% of violent crime. They claim to do this to protect the children and we need to do whatever is necessary to save a life.     Sir normal Americans understand your logic quite clearly and your letter is fine,however you don’t have to explain why you’re exercising your right under the second amendment. Congress can pass all the so called ‘gun laws’ they want and every one of them are unconstitutional. Just because SCOTUS has deemed them constitutional is irrelevant,they also said owning slaves was legal at one point in history to.

      100% appropriate. At this point it does not matter if you are abiding by the “law of the liberals”. Many of their laws are unconstitutional and you can not wait on the Courts to decide such. Their laws are aimed to disarm and confiscate. Do not go along with either. Nor should you agree to register any weapons already in your possession. Their aim there is to confiscate when they are ready.
      Sad to say but we are in a time where we have to treat our government as tyrannical and obviously our enemy. Any fool who thinks Obama and his crowd are out for our best interest or that of America are out of their frigging tree and deserve what they get for being stupid. Not saying I would not save a few of their asses if possible, but you better be prepared to organize with those you can trust and be further prepared for the worst.
      Would not be a bad idea to seek direct counsel from God. He’s still available and is not opposed to us doing what we have to do, and divine intervention was not just for the Old Testament. If you doubt that, ask the modern day Israelis. They have experienced it first hand. Confirm it from the Egyptians that may still be around who abandoned 500 tanks and ran back to Egypt in the face of a much inferior size force.
      Might even make Believers out of some on this blog site.
      We are once again in a time that will try men’s souls.

    3 cents for a .22 LR cartridge, and 46 cents for a 5.56….

    Obviously this guy hasn’t bought any ammo since this nonsense has started in force.

    I haven’t really either I bought in bulk before the election as much as my funds allowed. But 5.56 is $1 per cartridge now pretty much everywhere.

    Fort Drum has by all reports began to destroy its once fired brass by shredding it and selling it to China for scrap, instead of profitably selling it to civilian Ammo companies. And doing so goes against orders put in place after the last time they tried that. An illegal action also from what I gather.

      Just bought 525 .22cal. ammo for .02 cents a round at the latest gun show here in Va. Beach, Va. Better find a new place to buy your ammo.

      I bought thousands of rounds before the election.

      I only use CCI Mini Mag round nose. I got it for 6.25 cents a round, I am pretty sure what you got wasn’t that.

      Ammo here is sold out within 30 minutes of it being placed on the shelves. I work for a living and so does my wife so we don’t have time to go to Academy when it opens or camp out waiting for stock to be put out.

      I will use Federal bulk if I have to, so if I can find it I will buy some for target plinking. Remington Golden Bullets void the warranties on most .22 semi autos. And it is jam-o-matic.

      You’re absolutely right Defy- Even with Obummer reelected as prez you could still buy ammo. BUT, when the Newtown shooting happened, all ammo started to dry up-fast. Add to that, all the people panic buying guns – that increased the demand for ammo of all calibres. As you stated, it’s at least -if not more than $1.00 a round for .223 cal. Which is VERY hard to find now. Sold Out … I’m just glad I stocked up on ammo prior to this mess. I brought a 100 – 200 rounds here and there, .223-.45ACP- and .303 British for a Lee-Enfield. I’m ok -but I still wish I had more! You just have to float around online to see if anythings comes in. But it moves FAST.

    That we don’t start teaching about the second amendment Bill of Rights and Constitution the other side will gladly tell the that they’re out of date ideas that need to be changed for the collective well-being of everybody. Then nobody will have any individual rights anymore. That’s why whenever you get a chance to take someone to the range who has never been there before and show them it’s not only a great past time is also your constitutional right and if you don’t use it you might end up losing it
    remember what happened to England and Australia don’t let it happen here

      I’m tired of stories justifying why…because the fact remains…it is our Right. And, any Liberal’s failed ideas, wants, or needs…do not supersede the Constitution of the United States or my Rights. Don’t like that @SendintheMoron, et, al…get Congress to write an Amendment<<<pure and simple! BTW, the decision by the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals decision in the case of Peterson v. Martinez, of whether a state has an obligation to provide a concealed carry license doesn't mean squat!! It is the right of the people to keep and bear arms…so open carry is fine with me, but watch for heads exploding on open carry…like in Chicago!

    The problem with Mr Minney’s logical and intelligent letter is that liberals, aka, progresso-commies, have no use for logic, common sense, intelligent argument, facts, reason, or anything else that proves that their stupid ideas won’t do what they say, will cost far more than they guess, er estimate, and all foolish, stupid, and based entirely on emotion. That’s readily shown by Feinstein’s proposed law which would ban one model of the Ruger Mini 14 rifle because it’s got a black plastic stock with a pistol grip, and equipment rails on its forend because it’s “more deadly”. More deadly than what? The exact same rifle with a wood stock (which btw has a “pistol grip” just like most other modern rifles) and no equipment rails?

    Progresso-commies are too busy saving “just one child” that they can’t be bothered with logic or intelligence.

      @Larry I took my new girl shooting last week, she is new to some of this but I showed her one gun with a wood stock and then one that was changed into an AR style gun. Funny thing with her being new to these guns she just said they shoot the same whats the problem with these idiots in DC.
