Possibly the Most Disgusting & Informative YouTube Channel Ever That We Can’t Stop Watching (You’ve Been Warned)

There is a relatively new YouTube channel that is turning stomachs of viewers and, yet, with most of the videos getting an overwhelming thumbs up compared to thumbs down. It’s clear there is a side of people that just can’t stop watching it.

The Brain Scoop follows Emily Graslie, a volunteer curatorial assistant with the Philip L. Wright Zoological Museum at the University of Montana. According to the channel’s Facebook page, it examines the “curious world of taxidermy, zoology, natural history museums, and the culture of animal preservation.”

So basically, Graslie is going to show you how the beautifully positioned and preserved animals you see on display on field trips actually came into being.

Gulp.

The Brain Scoop, which got started on YouTube in December, includes video of the museum’s backroom collection and the more gory steps of the taxidermy process of a wolf that was hit by a car.

First, they have to go get it.

The video starts with Graslie calling her contact saying she was on her way to pick up a wolf in the freezer that was being held for her. Except, she mis-dialed and accidentally called LensCrafters (it was probably the oddest thing they would hear that year).

“I’m really excited about this,” Graslie said once the 9o-pound wolf was in the back of the pickup truck. “It’s not everyday we get wolves. It’s especially not everyday we get an entire wolf. We get to do some good necropsy stuff. I love me a good necropsy.”

Watch “Getting the Wolf”:

A few videos elapse and then comes the skinning of the wolf. Here’s where things get a bit gory. The Brain Scoop even has its own “grossometer” gauge, which reads at the lower end of extreme with a score of seven for the skinning and some blood.

Before we get into the skinning, let’s talk YouTube’s policy. You might be wondering if YouTube allows such dissections that can make many in the audience squeamish — even Graslie admitted on Facebook she gets nauseous at points? According to its Community Guidelines, it doesn’t appear The Brain Scoop’s wolf footage would fall under some of YouTube’s crossing the line categories. YouTube does note that it is “not a shock site” and “gross-out videos of accidents, dead bodies and similar things” should not be posted. The scientific nature of the Brain Scoop and its graphic content warnings is probably what helps it avoid this restriction.

But as Graslie pointed out, some of the videos that are more graphic in their channel do have an age restriction. She said in a Q&A video about the wolf that she tried to appeal to YouTube, telling them the video was scientific in nature, but they held strong with the age restriction.

Back to skinning.

Part of the technique for skinning the wolf involves cutting through its thick skin but not so far that you’re cutting into the muscle. Another factor is avoiding cutting into the bowel area, which on this wolf appears to be bloated, suggesting gases have built up in there that Graslie does not want to release yet.

“Let’s try to describe that smell. What does it smell like?” Graslie says in the video. “It smells like KFC if you leave it in the back of your car with a layer of water at the bottom of the bucket in 100 degree weather for eight years. I’m continuously amazed by the things that nature produces.”

Here’s the skinning in 15 minutes, although it took a total of seven hours (Note: again graphic footage and some not-safe-for-work conversation):

Next comes the gutting of the wolf. With its “oceans of blood, visible organs and dismemberment,” the video gets a “holy  f***” (redacted) rating on the grossometer.

As she cuts into the distended bowel section of the wolf — in a fume hood — you can actually hear a hiss of the gases being released. Turns out it didn’t smell as bad as she thought it would.

As we stated before, gross gory videos in the name of science is not all The Brain Scoop has going for it. Graslie hosts other videos showing what is in the museum’s backroom drawers and has Q&As with viewer questions.

In her second Q&A, Graslie reveals that she graduated with a bachelors in studio art.

“I have a painting degree,” she said. It wasn’t until her senior year that she found her interest in the museum and it was too late to change majors then. She is currently working toward an MA in museum studies.

    ‘yes, the life of the flesh is in the blood,’ I recall reading; she would make an excellent teacher- takes a boring topic and explains it and makes it interesting.

    Her quirky personality adds to her charm. I like her style.

    That was interesting no I’m not desensetized by it.It all depends on how one looks at it and I’m 58 and it didn’t make me ill maybe if I was there and the smell might have got to me but all in all it was a learning thing.I disected a worm in school and a frog in science class but I couldn’t do cats and espeacially ones that were pregnant that is where I had to draw the line for me and no I didn’t need my parents to sign an opt-out it was a choice our teachers gave us and no we didn’t get a failing grade if we didn’t want to do bigger animals but that was when education was real education and not run by progressvies.Great teachers we had.

    The cutting and gutting doesn’t bother me at all. The most disturbing part of this video is seeing live fleas pulled from an animal frozen for 2 weeks.

    I’m sorry but I fail to see what’s so bad about this. Taxidermy is a legitimate profession and for people who would like to be a veterinarian, it helps to learn about an animal’s anatomy, kinda like dissecting a frog. If it’s not your cup of tea, then don’t watch it.

      Don’t understand what’s the big deal. Have field dressed and butchered hogs, cows, calves, goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits and lots and lots of deer.

      All these folks who go down to the store and buy a piece of meat, neatly shrink wrapped with nice red food dye on it, have no idea what the real deal is.

      This woman can work beside me any day of the week. Just like my ole lady, roll up the sleeves, make the cuts, wrap it up and get it in the freezer before decay sets in. Its life. This woman is a prize and a keeper.

    Necessary stuff in a lot of cases but what isn’t necessary is putting videos like this on a feed that the public has access to. In the name of science and teaching this is okay but this is akin to what is going on in the movies and on TV programs. If we keep desensitizing things like this for public viewing and consumption youngsters will think less and less of killing and carving living things. This is in the same category as violent video games and disgusting TV programs like Family Guy and the CSI episodes. War is bad enough and we see what effect it has on some soldiers but to glorify mutilation of living things is not at all necessary.

    Doesn’t bother me… Of course i shot, gut and fully process my own deer and throw it in the freezer… Nothing i haven’t seen before lol. Quite educational for ones that have never dissected anything. Do they still do worms and frogs in school? lol i’ve been out of school for over a decade. By now i figured Libs would have this harmless stuff banned…

      I was going to say I do the the same thing. And I’m a girl. I even teach people how to field dress, skin, quarter, grind, freeze, make jerky and freeze venison among other things. Not GUTS, no glory. Tee hee.

    This was really interesting. Having grown up on a farm we would butcher and skin cattle, deer, pigs, etc. The absolute beauty of the creation of God. I am forwarding this to my son’s fiance who is in anatomy classes.

    Like beauty, disgust is in the eye of the beholder. Autopsies, necropsies, and dissections take place for valid educational,social, and scientific reasons. While not for the squeamish, these pictures are nowhere near the intensity of what one sees in a R-rated horror or war movie.

      I’ve attended autopsies before primarily to observe and protect the evidence collection process. Anything but pleasant, but a necessary function for law enforcement. Frankly, It just had to become part of the job. Believe me, some traffic accidents, aircraft crashes and one particular train strike are far worse visually.

    In Mammalogy class, we had to do a skin & skull collection. If you really l want to see a carefully skinning, try skinning a skunk & not hitting the scent gland. My major professor, who taught the class, forbade us from skinning a skunk as the last time it was done, the student hit the scent gland & the entire 5 story biology building had to be evacuated. I was allowed, however, to hand in a skunk skull, nicely cleaned by Dermistid beetles.

    I don’t a gross factor just science at work. Man up as Glenn Beck says.

      I lived in Alaska for years. Been knee deep in guts on many occasions field dressing moose, bear and even a bison. Kids would run trap lines and bring back all sorts of critters from martins to wolves to skin out and sell the hides.

      Just goes to show how far we have got from the land. How many of the EEEEUUUU!!! people here would go vegan if/when the SHTF and they had to process their own meat?

    My brother wanted to be a taxidermist when he was in high school. He found a dead fox on the side of the road and brought it home to work on. When he cut it open to skin it out, He threw up all over the carcass. For some unknown reason he never finished the job!!
