A proposed city ordinance in Guntersville, Alabama would allow police officers to disarm citizens during times of crisis if they deem it necessary.
Part of a larger disaster response bill, Mayor Leigh Dollar is standing by the proposal and seemingly tried to downplay it to WAAY-TV.
“By no means is it our intent to disarm, or seize anyone’s firearms,” she assured with a smile and a southern drawl. “This is in there to protect public workers and any volunteers helping should someone become unruly, which can happen because emotions are high…”
“It’s only to protect people,” she added.
The bill will be evaluated at the next Guntersville City Council meeting on March 4, but Mayor Dollar notes that such laws are already on the books in other cities.
In particular, she says she wants to emulate Tuscaloosa. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans cops performed similar acts, in one case reportedly tackling, punching, and confiscating the firearm of a woman who said she wanted to stay at home with her dogs.

(Photo: WAAY-TV)
The Lakeside Post describes the exact phrasing of the Guntersville proposal: “As provided by Alabama State Code, any law enforcement officers acting in official duties may disarm and individual if deemed necessary. The officer must return the firearm to the individual before leaving or [arresting] the individual.”
In 2006 then-President George W. Bush supported measures to strengthen the rights of gun owners during times of emergency, but the bill died in the Senate. As such, it seems the issue still remains in the hands of local officials.
Though Mayor Dollar’s proposal isn’t the first of its kind, a number of Guntersville residents are still concerned by the somewhat loose description of what a person has to be doing to get their weapon confiscated (“unruly”), noting that cops already have authority over people exhibiting actual violence.
“It seems like an infringement on the 2nd Amendment, and that’s the biggest problem I have with it,” local music teacher Paul Landry said.
Keith Sullivan, another local resident, added: “The law’s already there. Somebody’s brandishing a weapon, you can arrest them right there.”

Feb. 26, 2013 at 6:28pmI live in alabama as well.
Seems like a reasonable law…except that it could be used to disarm the population and help along confiscation policies.
Personally, I am a republican because they stand for traditional values and seem to support individual freedoms rather than collective nanny state ideals.
However, republicans very clearly serve a set of interests that I do not like, ie; corporate america, wealthy ‘job creators’ (which is the most transparent language trick I have ever heard), the religious oligarchy (which tries to deny freedom from americans), banks and the financial sector, the military complex, and all the various interests that harm the environment.
Democrats are far too reliant on the state, denying freedom in order to address each and every deviation from a perfectly ordered society. However, I usually like the interests that they support and siphon money to when they are in power, ie; teachers, middle and lower class citizens, unions (right to work lets us compete better globally, but also lets corporations take advantage of their employees), immigrants and minorities, the environment (it’s not about hippies and flower power if you live somewhere with heavy metals in the water and smog warnings every other week).
The interests seem to be the part of the equation that I don’t see changing…these relationships are too well established. However, freedom seems like something that democrats could support. I think of the gun rights issue…cont.

Feb. 26, 2013 at 6:32pmIt is beyond out of control. I was a police officer for 11 years. No administrator would have ever been able to get me to take a law abiding citizens guns away from them. I pray and pray it does not come down to what it appears it is coming down to. If any law enforcement officers make a move to take someones guns away because of a storm. They better be aware that the person has the right to defend themselves from a tyrannical government. They are counting on the fact that people won’t act to defend their rights. But believe me they won’t take more risk than they have to. They will just come when you least expect it. The middle of the night after checking your property with a drone with infrared cameras to make sure you are in bed. It’s nightmare on elm street folks and the government is Freddy Kruger and you can’t go to sleep. Scary isn’t it.

I think most people understand that there is merit in having a healthy fear of your government. While the far left is not likely to embrace gun rights, that may be due to the fact that they live in big urban cities with ample police protection and a lot of crazy people walking the streets. They don’t talk to their neighbors and don’t understand southern living, so they may never appreciate this value. However moderate democrats, like moderate republicans don’t support confiscation or any route that may end up there. In my lifetime I have seen the progression of dems in this area. I think they are also capable of accepting limits to government overreach in other areas. NYC big gulp laws come to mind…In NYC it may make sense, like the laws in over-crowded singapore against chewing gum. It leads to millions of discarded gum pieces all over subways and streets, and someone has to clean it up…tax it to pay for clean up or make it illegal. I won’t explain NYC soda law, but it has a logic that nanny staters love. The idea is to argue freedom, and that lost freedom is a cost as well. Should we have to pay for our freedom? Of course not. But sometimes it has a cost (my gum chewing may end up costing someone a pair of shoes or pants if they sit on it). Taxes take freedom but allow it as well…because the alternative is to make something illegal or allow that cost to infringe on someone’s property rights. Which brings me to democratic tax policy…cont.

I think most of us can agree that taxes are bad. However, we should also agree that a strong country is favorable to a weak one. While there would be disagreement on the benefit that is derived from government spending, statistics (math) from the GOA can identify with decent precision, the amount gained in monetary and social terms from each dollar of tax money spent. When a dollar spent can create more good than if it was not spent, I personally think we should spend it…but you have to consider deficits/debt in this equation, and currently the money we spend has to gain more return due to the interest we pay maintaining the debt. But, spending is good because it strengthens our country. A strong country benefits us all, but it helps business and the rich more than the middle or lower class citizen (I know because I am rich and I benefit from a hundred policies and privileges born to my class). The wealthy pay a lower rate in taxes than they have in 50 years and the bush tax cuts are very much responsible for about 10trillion of our debt. That much money could have built a high speed rail across the country, and every citizen could pay for a ticket that covered the gas and upkeep (pennies) to travel and do business while touring america from coast to coast. That’s a stronger country and it comes from democratic tax policy that never made rich people hire less and never drove them out of the country before. I know you will disagree, but your reason should be real?

This is done every single day and it is legal and sound. You have a right to bear arms, but if you are acting in a way that makes you unpredictable and a possible threat, law enforcement can disarm you. If you have not violated any laws, the firearm is returned before they leave (usually unloaded and field stripped). If you have violated some laws, you go to jail, and depending on what you did, you can retrieve your firearm later when you get out of jail. There are lots of hot headed, dangerous, law-abiding, gun-toting, morons out there, and the police can’t read minds and say for sure when someone is going to change their “law-abiding” status.

Feb. 27, 2013 at 9:27pmI can’t believe anyone in America STILL thinks there is a difference in progressives and conservatives in Washington. That is sheer madness. It was Bush who gave the order to disarm the NOLA people and who gave the order to imprison the citizens in the superdome and to not render aid while thousands of women and children were being raped and beaten and abused horribly. It was Bush who prevented the National Guard from rendering aid to people coming off of prescription and street drugs in that dome and who would not let them enter to render aid for any reason for 7 days. It was also Bush who ordered guards only 4 blocks away to prevent the Red Cross from bringing food and water to those starving and dying citizens in that dome.
It was Bush Sr. who signed the UN agreement in 92 to agree to the creation of a new world order and to agree to depopulate the entire world by 90%. It is Bush Sr. who can be seen 22 times while addressing Congress telling them that we “must create a NWO.”

Feb. 26, 2013 at 4:41pmWho gets to define unruly? When law enforcement becomes unruly can we disarm them? All of these politicians forget that they are accountable to the citizens that elected them and fund their municipalities. They are there to protect us, our rights and the constitution not criminalize us in order to make their jobs easier.

Feb. 26, 2013 at 5:29pmFlow,
They are not there to protect you. They are there to protect the state and the politicians FROM US. Also, they are there to soak every last stinking dime out of your ass to fund their pensions and cushy retirement benefits. Do not be mislead into thinking otherwise. Supreme Court (joke) ruled that cops have no duty to protect the citizenry. You are on your own. It is about money and power. .

Feb. 26, 2013 at 4:39pmWhat EXACTLY is their definition of ” unruly “. That Woman in New Orleans was not the least bit unruly when those Nazi Cops knocked her down in her own home and took her only means of self defense against the Unruly Mob of Looters ! How about – after the natural disaster you tell the authorities, we don’t need your help, we are just fine – now leave. This mayor is Violating her Oath of Office and must step down or be fired.

Where are the compounds and luxury homes where they reside. They must be uncovered. Find out. Put the heat on their asses for a change. Let them feel what it is like to be watched.

No way, we have a Second Amendment Right. Our Rights were given to us by God, if this happens, it’s just not going to end well…May God have Mercy on us…Although I don’t know why He would…

Feb. 26, 2013 at 4:29pmOath keepers.org. The Constitution has something to say about this, illegal search and seizure, due process, right to keep and bear arms. Lets not forget in a disaster/emergency or manufactured crisis it is the chains of the constitution that bind down men.

Feb. 26, 2013 at 6:06pmOath Keepers is fine. If you are one of them. If you are a regular schmuck, you are relegated to 2nd class membership. They purport to speak to ” the guys with the guns” but they allow firemen to gain full membership status. Huh? Firemen don’t pack heat. That is why I left the org after 1 year. They think the average American can’t shoot or use force. They think that all we can do is send them money and cheer-lead from the sidelines. That is why I will not re-join. Let them pat themselves on the back all they want. If patriots, non “first responders” gathered, they would wipe them out. But I guess it is better than nothing. If you are not a cop, active duty soldier, or fireman then you are a low-life according to them. A punk, a sap.

In another story, DHS has announced that they are releasing Illegal aliens from prisons… 500 already released last week in Arizona. The plan to release 10,000 (See headline on FOX page). No big deal here, but if I were one of those defenseless gun-control Liberals… it might be a big deal.

Feb. 26, 2013 at 5:48pmOk, I figure about 900,000 fed, state and local cops in America. Let’s say 60% are good men, patriots, 40% statist goons. That’s 360,000 cretins to deal with. Given the number of armed Americans, you can quickly see where I am going with this math. I hope like hell they go for it.
