Survivors of Rape Speak Out Against Gun Control: ‘I Was Denied the One Equalizing Factor That I Had’

Survivors of Rape Speak Out Against Gun Control

(TheBlaze TV)

On his Tuesday evening broadcast, Glenn Beck hosted a special guest panel comprising people who have survived the unspeakable atrocity of rape. What’s more, these guests maintain that their attack might have been prevented if they had been equipped with a means of self-defense. Many of the attacks occurred in gun-free zones, underscoring the reality that people of goodwill were left defenseless, while those with an intent to do harm still found a way to wreak their havoc.

Included on the panel was Amanda Collins, who was raped at gunpoint in a garage situated on her college campus. Her attacker, James Biela, had already raped two other women and murdered a third. He is now serving his sentence on Death Row.

It can and has certainly been argued that Collins, who was trained in the proper use of guns from childhood, could have stopped her attacker had she been carrying a weapon, and perhaps even saved other lives Biela would target next. According to Beck, Collins did in fact own a gun and had a concealed carry license but it was illegal to carry the firearm on her college campus.

“I was denied the one equalizing factor that I had,” she said.

Another panelist, Kim Corban Weeks was attacked and raped in her own home by an intruder. She escaped after convincing her attacker that she would not report the crime, but eerily, he remained at her residence to speak with her for an hour after the incident. Eventually he was apprehended and is now serving 24 years to life. Weeks is now an avid supporter of gun rights and is married to a police officer.

Also on the panel to share her thoughts was Wanda Mills, who, in 1993 was attacked while on a business trip in the town where she grew up. She was assaulted while jogging and abducted at knife-point, dragged into the woods, tied to trees, tortured, raped and worse for six hours. Mills was savvy enough to convince her rapist, Richard Riley, that one day they could fall in love. As soon as she got to the main road and saw her co-worker she screamed that she was alive.

Riley is now serving six life sentences.

Mills explained that even during the trauma, the body and mind is resilient and that she was contemplating a way to free herself the entire time. She is a pro-gun advocate and believe bureaucrats are abusing their power to add more gun laws than are currently in place.

Julie Weil was attacked while picking her up two children from church daycare. In broad daylight she was struck in the head. When she came to, the first question her attacker asked her was whether she believed in God. When she said yes, he replied that she would then have to forgive him for what he was about to do to her and her children, who she was later raped in front of.

Apparently the rapist’s father worked for the ATF and was a deacon for the church. His mother a church secretary.

He was eventually convicted with the help of DNA evidence and is now serving seven consecutive life sentences.

Today, Weil is lobbying for support of legislation dubbed “The Safer Act.” While she does not own a gun, she is a supporter of the Second Amendment.

Also on the panel was Felicia Smith, who was raped on two separate occasions, once at age 19 when she was drugged by an acquaintance and again at age 23 by her gym trainer. While Smith did file a report, her attacker was never convicted of any crime.

Each of these women candidly spoke to Beck at great length about their experiences and views on self-defense as it relates to the Second Amendment.

Survivors make their case for supporting the Second Amendment and criticize recent statements made by Colorado Democrats and Vice President Joe Biden on this contentious issue:

In the segment below, Beck slams the recent suggestions leveled by a Colorado legislator on how women should handle rape:

Below, survivors express their views on a Colorado legislature’s “demeaning” advice to women who are attacked by rapists:

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

College Women and Men – If you are raped, Call the Sheriff’s Department and report this Crime. Do Not call the Campus Police OR the City Police OR report this Crime to the Student ” Honor ” Court, unless you really want the Dangerous Rapist to go free. The Leftists University of North Carolina Administration is waging their own ” War on Women ” – Read Today’s Blaze !

I have a better idea. Don’t get raped in the first place. Carry a gun. I guess you could carry a ballpoint pen. Maybe learn to vomit on command. Defecate all over yourself maybe. But I would recommend the gun. It’s much cleaner and it saves the taxpayers a bunch of money on trial, incarceration, appeals, etc… Sounds like a win-win.

@chrisad – I agree – get a gun – .38 cal or larger (.45 would be best) and remember, aim center-mass and concentrate on your SECOND shot (squeezing the trigger twice really fast). If you empty your entire clip/cylinder into the rapist, oh well. Just remember to reload.

To All- I don’t know why we are not putting the names of the states and colleges here. Ms. Amanda Collins is an incredibly brave woman who was raped on the campus of the University of Nevada-Reno campus. This week the legislature (which thankfully only meets every other year for only 120 # days) will hear her story again in support of legislation to allow CCW and other off-duty P.O. s to concealed carry on the campuses of the State of Nv. It will, just like last year, not pass due to a Dem. controlled State Senate. Sadly the NFR Rodeo and many other major events take place in arenas and stadiums controlled by the Univesity system right here in Las Vegas minutes from the strip where two rapper “pimps” shot it out Hollywood style right in the busiets intersection on the Las Vegas Strip. One killing the other but collateral damage included a taxicab exploding and incinerating the driver and the pasenger. The Maserati driving rap/pimp is also dead but caused the accident w/ the cab. The other vehicle, Black Range Rover, was recovered a short distance away– but he’s long gone. All of this was supposedly the result of a sec. camera filmed altercation in the Valet part of the Aria Resort (cameras are everywhere in LV- just not enough of them on our Nv. Campuses). The bravery Ms. Collins showed by appearing on nat’l TV and now testifying yet again, is phenominal. The real question is do we just flaunt the law and carry anyway, risking revocation: bettter judged=12 vs.buried=

I think sites like TheBlaze and Fox need to start up a barrage of stories like this and accuse the left of waging a war against women. At least, in this case, it would be 100% true.

First of all, I don’t think for the most part that alot of Fox journalists don’t have a clue on guns (calibers, auto or semi auto and what guns that citizens can own without a class 3 license) and how safe they really are. O’Rielly and some others have made remarks that are totally wrong and there stats are wrong. The main stream media definitely don’t have a clue what so ever. I do agree that these stories and the correct info should be brought out. Some of the people I have talked to were astonished at how wrong the media is on this issue. Hannity has more correct info than alot of others.

It’s a side argument on another very real reason for the right to bear arms, and a valid one. All of the Amendments in the Bill of Right are about opposing tyranny but bringing up the other positive effects of those rights does help cement the argument for them.

I didn’t realize that ‘protection against tyranny’ could sound so much like ‘security of a free State’. But, by all means, please continue to decide for the rest of us what the Constitution actually means, because these rape victims need to be told that rapists aren’t the actual threat to their security as citizens of a free State, so their possession of firearms is a moot point.

No one is trying to decide for anybody what the 2nd amendment means. We just don’t want to get sucked into the commie prog logic that it is about hunting, or self defense. When you open up that line of thinking you are allowing them to control the direction of the argument and thus impose more restrictions on us. Make no mistake. The progs want you dead. Yep, that’s right. Six feet under. Anyone who can offer resistance to their utopian dream is a mortal enemy of theirs. You can talk all the crap that you want. But It is all about control. I do see where you are going, but I think maintaining a “free State” is more than just about domestic tyranny. Domestic tyranny was the focus of the Founders when they adopted the amendments because that was what they had just shaken off, but we can lose our rights through more than just our own government’s activities.

Murders, thieves, terrorists and foreign invasions are also threats to our Liberty that the right to bear Arms safeguards against.

“Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” These are our inalienable rights. Before the 2nd Amendment Bill of Rights even kicks in we have the right to preserve our life by any means available. The 2nd Amendment provides the means to prevent tyranny. While I am unable to cite the SCOTUS ruling regarding the 2nd Amendment, I recall that the SCOTUS ruled that armed preservation of life had an implication in the 2nd Amendment. Unfortunately, I don’t have the citation.

While I agree with you that preventing/overthrowing tyranny is the primary focus of the 2nd Amendment. If I adhere to the well disciplined militia only, I am 65 and thus not part of the militia by law. This begs the question by what language under the 2nd, am I entitled to bear arms. I say I am not. I have the right to bear arms because of my inalienable right to life.

Sallyboy states, “Most women won’t kill another human.” If their lives are in jeopardy, you’d better believe they’ll use whatever means they have handy to stop their attacker. You say they may freeze while bearing arms, yet you also suggest mace or the tasering of balls. Nice. They’ll freeze with a gun but be a pro with mace or a taser (both of which have been proven not to work effectively 100% of the time when hitting a hopped-up druggie or a face-eating zombie!) You use a worn-out generalization in your 1st defense and contradict yourself in your 2nd defense. You’re a sorry representative for both Sallys and for boys.

One of the reasons Liberals are gaining ground in America is because Conservatives keep letting them change arguments. THE 2ND AMENDMENT IS NOT ABOUT PROTECTING WOMEN FROM RAPISTS AND IT’S NOT ABOUT HUNTING DEER, IT’S ABOUT PROTECTING OURSELVES FROM WANNABE HITLERS. If people abuse the 2nd Amendment by turning weapons on their fellow citizens, that is called “murder” and such people should be tried for murder, but you don’t punish murderers by taking away the rights of law abiding citizens to protect themselves from tyranny.

Our Republican form of government is controlled warfare where the First Amendment allows us to vent by waging oral battles. Take away the First Amendment and we’re forced to rely on the Second Amendment to win those battles. Take away the Second Amendment and the American People have lost the war to tyranny.

Although you are right that the Second Amendment is about “law abiding citizens to protect themselves from tyranny”, in truth, guns are used in today’s society for everything BUT protecting ourselves from tyranny. That is what I think the discussion should be about. Guns are used in all sorts of ways that have nothing to do with the Second Amendment’s intent. That is why the Left is standing up and saying “Whoa”. We do not have problems with the 2nd Amendment’s intention, but we do have problems with how guns are used in this Country. This is a worthy discussion, and one the Left is trying to have.

And this is why the Left is rightly saying “Whoa”. Only one of those gun uses is allowed in the 2nd Amendment. The rest are not but are the ones used mostly. The Constitution doesn’t give you or anyone the right to use your gun for any of those other uses, but it has been a tradition for Americans to own and use guns in ways not intended by the 2nd Amendment. But, over the years, gun violence has escalated to where we now need to have some discussion on gun violence within the concept of gun ownership. So, my questions to the Right is – Why has it become impossible to have this discussion you, and why when we try, do you call us commie pinko pigs and worse? This issue isn’t about who is right or wrong – it is about what is best for our Country moving forward.

Well since guns are causing violent crimes it gives us a valid excuse to take them all away from you incompetent children. When ALL the guns are gone from your hands the country will be safer. When the fact is it will be safer for them to do as they please. The criminals will still have guns. No, we can have any discussion about many things but not removing guns from law abiding citizens. The Constitution says “shall not be infringed” I took the oath to defend that Constitution against all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC. And I stand by that oath. Much of the control of guns is already an infringement on that Constitution and enough is enough. According to the true meaning behind the second amendment the people are entitled to have arms (not just guns) equal to that the government wields. That means literally, if I can afford it I am allowed to park an ICBM in my yard as a deterrent against the government becoming tyrannical. as time has allowed erosion of these rights we are left with just our hunting rifles while the government can come against us with all manner of full auto weapons, tanks, drones with missiles, and on and on. Why am I no longer allowed to defend my country with similar weaponry? Because that would level the playing field and they would not be able to levy the absurd laws they now pass against us with impunity. Is that conversation enough for you.

I have never ever met an adult woman who when posed the question, doesn’t have a story of sexual harrassment. I’m NOT talking about having some guy come on to you. I’m talking about unwanted, overt and over the top, inappropriate sexual advances. Half of the women that I know intimately had their virginity taken from them, it was not given up freely. I know a handful of women that were raped sometime in their lifetimes. The youngest was 13 and we were good friends at the time. In broad daylight in a park, near the downtown area of a ‘very nice neighborhood’…

Women should carry if they want to and feel comfortable with it.

Not to take anything away from women and this informative article,(I did watch the show last night) but you’d be surprised how many men as young boys have received unwanted over-the-top advancements and out-right molestation. It happened to me in the public school system when I was 9. And this was in a small rural conservative area. Monsters lurk everywhere. I thank God for my wonderful and loving parents. I kept it to myself but without their unconditional love I think it would’ve affected me more.

When I married my wife 36 years ago she told me she was armed on our first date and it didn’t bother me.Before we met she had to drive 900 miles to go home for the weekend with a .38 laying in the seat. In 4 years in the middle of nowhere guys tried to pull her over 3 times. She pointed the gun at them and they disappeared. One time she pulled around a guy as he slowed down for the 2nd time and as my wife tried to pass him all of a sudden they were doing 80 mph. My wife rolled down her passenger as they were coming to a curve up ahead and was about to shoot when he locked up his Firebirds breaks. Sher never saw him a gain.

It is more important to be situationally aware than to have a gun. Yeah sure, if you can get the drop on the creep, you may win. But I see WAY too many young women walking around completely oblivious to their surroundings They are either plunking around on their stupid phones or listening to headphones just waiting for somebody to grab them. Wake up, stick your head up and look around. Don’ t fall for the old tricks like a person asking for directions, or let a black guy within 100 yards of you . Fact: per capita you are more likelly to be raped by a black guy than any other demographic.

      Mil-dot:

You are correct in saying women need to have situational awarness. I would suggest for all women (and men too) to read “Mindhunter”, “Obsession”, and “Journey Into Darkness” by John Douglas. He is a former FBI agent. I learned a lot of very good lessons from these books and have yet to become a victim. Some of the content is very disturbing (he writes, in detail, about rapes and murders and how to not become a victim), but well worth it.

I agree that awareness is extremely important. As a woman who carries I consider my weapon only one aspect of staying safe. Women who do carry shouldn’t consider themselves invisible just because they have a gun on them. There could be times when you can’t safely and quickly access the weapon. Besides good people never truly want to shoot anyone. I would much prefer to be aware of my surroundings and leave an area that seems suspicious or request an escort to my car than to just put myself in harms way because I have a gun! On the flip side if a situation arises the ability to have a gun to protect myself against someone much stronger is something I’m thankful I can have!

Imagine if we could test this theory in a life sized lab. Take two small neighborhoods completely sealed off from the world and each other. Arm the women of one neighborhood with guns. In the other neighborhood post large signs declaring them Safe Zones and give each woman a shiny new whistle. Next release a rapist/murderer in to each of the neighborhoods.
Would anyone like to come up with a hypothesis of the outcome?

Extra credit question: Into which neighborhood would Feinstein like to let her daughter live in? How about Obama’s daughters?

I don’t know if there are words to describe a mother being raped in front of her children; but, I do know that the swift justice of the old west is needed in these situations. Select a hanging jury to hear the testimony presided-over by a hanging judge and see the rapist swinging by sundown. You say I’m a Neanderthal? In my world, the terms serial rapist, serial murderer and serial child molester do not exist.

      John,
Be careful my friend. Just because a girl has a gun it is not a guarantee that she will prevail. It is the mind that wins battles, the weapon is just an instrument. You can kill somebody with a sharpened popsicle stick. . A person must be aware of their surroundings first and foremost, and second, one must be willing to shoot another human being, possibly killing them. Most girls I have seen will cry over a broken fingernail or torn stocking. Betting that they will be quicker than a cretin, get the drop and shoot is a gamble. There must be ZERO hesitation or the miscreant now has the gun. You must train the mind just as much as your trigger finger. Just my 2 cents worth brother. Your best defense against a marauder is to not go where they dwell in the first place. Don’t walk alone, or at night, or frequent venues where young males are likely to become intoxicated, don’t trust black guys. Words of wisdom.

The entire premise of the “gun free zone” is that it is THE GUN that causes the violence, not the human being wielding it. They believe just the very act of carrying a gun causes that person to somehow become deranged and want to hurt others. That is the core of the prog’s argument. Take that away and they have nothing of substance. So they must demonize the instrument, not the person. A GFZ is nothing more than an announcement to the verminous that those present are available to be victimized while offering the least resistance.

My wife carries a tazzer… setting it off for me is like racking a shotgun. A pint of blood leaves my body every time she sets it off. She wants a pistol and I think it would be okay for her though I think something tiny, like a .22 pistol would be easy for her to conceal and use without much notice even close up. She could also target practice cheaply. Every time I hear my wife talk about getting a pistol I think of the woman playing Don Knots mother in “The Shakiest Gun in the West” She pulls a cannon out of her purse. Tactically I don’t think you could pull something like that out quickly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBNHjTPCE24

.22 is not enough. I suggest a Ruger LCP. Its a .380 ACP, and it kicks a bit more than a .22; but it is manageable. My wife has been training with a Walther P22 (.22 caliber); but I think she is ready to step up to a .380.

What is important, is STOPPING power…and a .22 just doesn’t do it. Yes, a .22 is deadly, but man, I want my wife to be able to STOP an attack RIGHT NOW! Heck, if we take Biden’s advice and I could give my wife a 12 guage shotgun that would fit in her purse, that would be awesome. But that just isn’t going to happen. To be honest, I would rather my wife had a .45…and perhaps I’ll get her to that point.

      Chief,

I am 5’4″ and my gun is a baby glock. It is a 9mm and fits nicely between my hip and my ribcage when I am sitting. It may be a little harder to fire (my springfield .45 is much smoother with less kick) accurately, but it fits me for carry (a lot of practice helps).

With the loads and types of ammo they have these days, a 9mm can get the job done. In the end the best gun for somene is always the one that they can consistantly cluster 3 rounds in a 3″ box.

Each woman is different. Let her find the one that is right for her (my husband took me out for our anniversary to dinner and then a gun range to try out a bunch of different ones)

I am a CCW instructor and the primary weapon I recommend for everyone is a S&W airweight .38 special +P IF the lady’s feel they can handle it. I have had many that just felt it was too much when they first shot it but by the end of the classes wanted one. It is small (easily concealable and light weight yet quite powerful) I have my wife and both daughters as well as myself carrying one and I load the first round with a shot capsule loaded with # 6 shot and the rest are gold dot hollow points loaded hot. The shot is non lethal in most cases and the lady’s are much more likely to use it with impunity. As I get them more used to the idea I add a little less shot and drop in last a single 00buck pellet which is a .32 cal round ball and adds a little more lethality to the load, as well as causing the shot to disperse to a wider pattern sooner, making it much more likely to be effective. In most incidents when a lady pulls a gun the prep’s eyes get big as he looks at the weapon which I teach is the instant that it is fired directly at the face. Now the perp is most likely blind and of much less threat. If they feel the need for more affirmative action the next round well placed should do the job. I know I am considered an animal by many but I feel like my women and myself are much safer in today’s world for it. Perps beware in the area where I live you would be amazed at the number of women that are carrying and are really good shots, and very serious about their safe

I think every one of these politicians that want to take away guns from people should be forced to go through a rape, and I mean a full, violent rape. Then they should feel free to vote however they want after that, and I think I know the perfect rapist, Micheal Moore.

Darmok, the only way to lure Michael Moore into a sexual encounter is to Duct Tape a Taco Bell between the victims legs.

That won’t fly! That is just plain sick and if the US can’t water board how can it allow this? I’d rather see him deported to a nice warm place like… Northern Africa where he can open his mouth ONCE and it never again open.
