Is Conservatism the New Counterculture?
Editor’s note: In the March issue of TheBlaze Magazine, Natasha Pascetta, a producer for “The Glenn Beck Program,” offers a unique look at who makes up the real rebel movement in America today. In her feature piece “Rebels With a Cause,” Natasha points out that conservatism has become the new counterculture—but without all the bad habits of the left-wing hippies of the 1960s and wannabe rebels in the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Below are a few excerpts and charts from the March 2013 piece on the conservative counterculure. Get the full story only in the March issue of TheBlaze Magazine.
The word “rebel” conjures all sorts of images: that iconic picture of James Dean with his cigarette dangling dangerously from his perfectly formed lips; George Washington and his troops crossing the frigid Delaware River in the dead of night; a leather-clad Billy Idol and his spiked, bleached hair screaming out one of his only hit songs.
How about modern-day conservatism? Though just a few years ago it would have seemed impossible, we may be seeing today the rise of a new counterculture. Yes, the stuffy, straight-laced, emotionless stereotypes of conservatism are simply a façade that hides a much cooler reality. All the sweater vests and endless talk of fiscal responsibility are just one big, genius ruse.
Consider the young student who attends a very liberal college in a very liberal city—as this author did—and whose views are definitely in the minority during classes. It’s through an adherence to conservative principles that the right-wing “rebel” student gets his (and his parents’) money’s worth. Teaming with like-minded colleagues, students can really challenge professors and ask the most questions. Sure, their views are often dismissed as ridiculous and downright wrong, but it’s their liberal classmates who are done a disservice. Conservative students can get so much more out of those classes than the majority of collegiate automatons. And yes, some students might walk out of class feeling like a misfit some days, but they often grow to like that feeling. Walking through the hallways after class, they have a Joey Ramone-like punk swagger.
With the re-election of Barack Obama, conservatism has become the new counterculture—particularly among young adults. Think about it. Throughout history, youth have always been distrusting of any kind of authority. It’s just their nature. In the 1960s, we had the hippies and the New Left rejecting the system and “sticking it to the man.” In the 1970s, young voters led the demand for the impeachment of Tricky Dick over Watergate. Most recently, the protesters at Occupy Wall Street took time out from raping each other in tents to protest the Obama administration and big banks. But they weren’t opposed to anything real. If anything, their drug-induced rants were born out of class envy and the desire to be coddled by bigger government.
Looking back, Occupy Wall Street was probably not radical enough to be considered the “counterculture,” which is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a culture with values and mores that run counter to those of established society.” That’s where conservatism comes in, without all the defecating in public and Guy Fawkes masks, of course.
Young conservatives and libertarians are much more radical in their opposition to “the establishment” than their liberal counterparts. It’s not a flashy, in-your-face opposition—but rather a stealthy steadfastness in the rejection of their peers’ complete faith in government. In this second term of Obama, the preservation of individual freedom has become a “radical” cause for the new counterculture.
Conservatives are up against some pretty hard-hitting stats regarding the youth of the nation. Sixty percent of the young adult (18-29) vote carried Obama into his second term with the thought that the government should do more to solve the country’s problems. And right now, a majority of 18-29 year olds have a more positive view of socialism than they do of capitalism. …
… This clearly shows that conservatism among the “young kids” is not exactly popular. But let’s not forget that everyone loves an underdog.
[...]
‘WE’ VERSUS ‘ME’
Individualism a message that stands in stark contrast to the message of the Left, which is one of serving the collective, the “we”—the Obama administration’s favorite word. Cries of slogans and propaganda such as “Yes, We Can” and “Change We Can Believe In” blatantly and deliberately disregard the more than 300 million individuals living in the United States.
The women’s liberation movement once was about not being defined by a “we” but as a “me.” Women fought for the right to be seen as individuals not against the fraudulent “War on Women.” If it weren’t for young women, Obama probably wouldn’t have been re-elected to a second term: 55 percent of women readily ushered him into office again and, perhaps unbeknownst to them, expedited the destruction of feminism.
With this re-election, the majority of women in this country have shown that they can be bought with free birth-control pills and worthless legislation, such as the Lilly Ledbetter Act. When did the females of this nation become so easy? Women used to be rebels against dependence on men, but now they have let this administration take political advantage of them and are not just dependent on a man but on The Man.
[...]
GUT-CHECK TIME FOR YOUNG ADULTS
To the millennials out there:
Does this sound like you or your friends? Maybe it scares you because it makes you question your allegiance to liberal conformity. The Obama administration and the collectivist Left do not have your best interests in mind. You need to depend on yourself for that—but conservatism can offer you much more freedom to explore those interests. …
[...]
Of course, being a part of the counterculture comes with its share of burdens. You are forced to think for yourself. You must celebrate your own weird, unique individualism. And generally keep conservatism and capitalism from becoming extinct. …

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 8:49amI was a hippie sds member in the late sixties. Then in the seventies the marxist politicians started taking over the protest side, the record companies started taking over the music and turning out crap, and the mob started taking over the drugs. All the fun was gone. So I cut my ****, took a good look around at where the truth was coming from, and became a conservative. You see, in the sixties big government was the enemy. It was oppressive. It had us killing our children in a war that they wouldn’t let us fight hard enough to win. The government was wrecking children’s lives because they smoked a joint. The government was keeping certain groups from having the opportunities to participate in the economic system. Big government was “The Man” to us hippies, and we fought it where we could and protested against it. Now big government has become “The Man” again, doing all the same things. It is oppressive. And it’s the Conservative Movement who are fighting it where they can and protesting against it. In some ways I’m the same old hippie. I fought against The Man then, and I’m fighting against The Man now. And it’s the same Man. The new Man is just like the old Man. The Man is the abuse of power.

Yes, unfortunately, seriously, in two classes over the 4.5 years I attended (had to work a full time job to pay my way through). This was around the time that the meme was spreading across campuses that “all men are potential rapists”, aka the 1990′s. The man hate was quite strong. I did get a big kick out of laughing quite out loud in classes when I heard man hate or group think.
And yes, I agree, reason and logic are a woman’s best friend, and a man’s best friend. We’re all human beings, logic and reason at such an advanced level is really one of the few things that keeps us from being brute animals. Any random guinea pig can “feel”, but only a human can build a skyscraper or figure out quantum physics.
@Ghost: Right on. I have so many Liberal Feminist Women in my family who are only into “feelings” that I stopped going to these “girlie” birthday parties because I just could not stomach them anymore. They will NOT reason and think it is cold and calculating. They are the MOST cold and calculating women I have ever met. Most of them have killed their own babies or their own grandchildren or helped other women kill their own babies. Yet, they THINK they are so “compassionate” and “Kind.” My family is full of Feminist women baby killers. I am the only female in my family who never killed a baby or helped anyone else do it. I am hated. Seriously. Hated.

Or what “fabulous ” or “awesome” new scarf they bought. Or how “fabulous” or “awesome” their 5th trip to Hawaii was this year. Can you say “BARF BAG?” I can! These are all Liberal Democrats who voted Barack Obama back into office in 2012. They act like some kind of rich Liberal Elite in my family. It just sickens me. Posted on February 26, 2013 at 12:55pmI can’t understand why the left wing progressives are so bitter toward the successful.
As a lifelong blue collar Conservative (ex-Democrat since 1999) I hold no animosity toward the well to do or the so called rich as it would be foolish to do so. Just because I didn’t recognize opportunity when it knocked on the door and was comfortable with my own physical ability and skills is no reason to begrudge those that expended effort and were the recipients of a little good luck. Life is good at 65 even looking back at the long days in the broiling sun and long nights in the freezing rain.
Just like millions of other Rebels with a Cause, I have no arrest record, 4 years of military service, the kids are college educated professionals with their own families, I saved for retirement and have never been on the government dole or been without a job for more than two weeks.
If you left wing pinko-commie dope smokers would have gotten with the program years ago, you’d be a lot happier now.

Right on military dude. Thanks for serving. I am the same way. NEver got in trouble. Just worked hard. My dad is a WWII combat veteran who fought Hitler and Hirohito. I was taught to WORK for what I wanted. We had a large family. I babysat, cleaned houses when I was 10 or 11. I started a part time job at 14. I got married in 1983. When my kids were in school I worked part time. They are all raised now and I work full time. We lived on one income from 1983 until my kids were grown. If these Liberals had only “sucked it up” like we were taught and didn’t expect anything from the Government they would have been further ahead but why in the name of Pete would anyone look to the US Government for anything except to “regulate commerce or trade” and ” provide for national defense?” We don’t NEED the Government because we have each other! Self Reliance. Dogged Determination. Hard Work. Thrift. Saving. These were taught by the WWII generation that defeated Hitler and Hirohito! But what about today’s kids? Indulged. Spoiled. Brats. Expecting handouts? How did America get here? I don’t know but a bunch of people need an A$$ whoppin! that’s all I can say about that! For starters, I have taken unemployment benefits each time my job has been eliminated. Although my parents – who both grew up in the depression and had fathers who unbelievably stayed employed all the way through – tried to teach me to save, I have not. In addition, I have also overspent my income and have sought protection from the courts to get back on track. It will be a long climb out, but I am determined to get out of this hole and never get back into it.
I am fortunate for the ‘safety net’, but also know that like a trampoline it is meant to help me get back on my feet, not sustain me for life.
Therefore, I’ll admire from afar, and add value where I can. Right now, that means working to pay off my debts, and ensuring my kids know what it means to overspend. If I can make them part of this “new” counter-culture, all the better.

@Ray2447:
Where did you get the idea that I don’t think Obama is a problem? I think he is. I think his party stole Election 2012 by massive voter fraud. Perhaps you don’t want me to criticize the GOP of which I am a member? I can criticize my own party can’t I? Of course I can. Dissent and disagreement are patriotic aren’t they? I have no interest in Communist China or living there. I have no interest in fighting with other Conservatives or GOP people. However, As Michelle Malkin just said, “The GOP needs to clean house” and they do. So many GOP people are wishy washy on their values and many are just right now capitulating to the LEFT. Which I am not. I am more of a TEA PARTY person. Fiscally and Morally Conservative. The Definition of Classical Conservatism is: Maintain the traditions of your fathers. So, I would like to maintain the traditional interpretation of the US Constitution. I don’t know what you read up above about what I wrote but you have me pegged as a Liberal. I am not. I never was. Despite all the propaganda and the attempt to indoctrinate young and impressionable minds, it is all going to come to naught. The fact is these younger people in that age bracket will be impoverished as the economy continues to implode, and they will never wield power the way other generations have in the past.
They have been brainwashed successfully to a large degree, but the effect of that brainwashing is minimal without the money and power to put it to the master’s use. The best the fascists (progressives/”liberals”) can hope for is to utilize their anger at being dispossessed to destroy the free market, and usher in a new age of government control. This will not be a quiet process.

Posted on February 26, 2013 at 12:55pmThis is a good response and it may come true unless other factors come into play. What would those be? If young people could get jobs under a Conservative President, like what happened with REagan, after FAILED JIMMY CARTER, then they MIGHT be more disposed to Conservatism. But, as it stands, we have 70% of America who “reports” that they have Conservative Values but when they vote, they vote Liberal and why the disconnect? BEcause they see the Liberals as the BigBrother, the Big Nanny “taking care of them.” Why is this? Because they have not been TAUGHT in their own families SELF RELIANCE like my WWII parents taught me. I see the BABY BOOMERS just handing their children money left and right. Because they had it. Where did they get money? From the SAcrifices of their WWII parents. I cannot tell you how many children…..rule the family roost. How many parents DON”T run the household. The kids cries, whines and gets whatever he or she wants. They throw a fit….are put in a corner for 5 minutes….then get chicken nuggets and fries and ice cream. There is NO discipline. None. They are told to “go to your room” and in their room is snacks mini fridge, computer, computer games, cell phone. What kind of punishment or discipline is that? Parenting in America now is a JOKE. There is NO parental WILL to discipline children and Parents are NOT disciplining themselves. We have a SPOILED BRAT NATION! WE are in DEBT, PERSONAL DEBT because NO ONE tells themselves NO!

As long as we have a culture that promotes “thinking” with your emotions and sees logical reasoning as “the oppression of the patriarchy”, that won’t happen.
I really wish I didn’t actually attend college classes where I was told that reason and logic are tools to oppress women. But I did. And it’s only gotten worse in colleges I’ve heard.
@Ghost of Jefferson: seriously dude? You were taught in college that “reason and logic are tools to oppress women?” Wow! If anything, reason and logic are tools to enlighten women and GET them OUT of their awful emotions! I can’t tell you how many “dumb” females I come across in every day life. And dumb males. America is FULL of uneducated LOW CLASS people who voted for Obama. Seriously, logic and reasoning are a Girl’s Best Friend. So, is COMMON SENSE but that appears to be in short supply too. I see an inordinate amount of young people who either: Don’t think and run with the crowd and the prevailing social attitudes OR go to college and just quote like an automoton the books the Liberal Professors tell them to. Either way: This is NOT thinking for yourself. So many young people are just little sheep “led to the slaughter.” They will NOT think for themselves and they will NOT reason things through. They have not been taught how to think for themselves. The Peer Pressure is too great for them. WEAKLINGS!

If young people wake up and notice who is slipping it in from behind, they are going to be very angry, and then Bill Ayers and his ilk will wish they never even heard the word revolution. Small government and rugged individualism has always been counter culture, in fact, it’s such a new thing that many haven’t lost the vestiges of collectivism. Because of that, the Old Slavers still have something to work with in order to pull humanity back into the dregs of slavery, serfdom and chains.

You might be right about these Young Libertarians but as Ann Coulter Pointed out on John Stossel’s show they FUNCTION more like Liberals. They are a bunch of geeks and nerds. They don’t want the GOP because it is full of “old rich white farts” yet they followed Ron Paul? And why? HE is an old rich white fart. I don’t know what these Young Libertarians are all about except “get the Government out of my life” and “let me smoke pot and have gay marriage.” I don’t think they KNOW what they want. I don’t think they have been TAUGHT how to THINK. They have ALL been educated at University which makes them the DRONES of LIBeralism yet they would staunchly defend the US Constitution and their INDIVIDUAL LIBERTIES. As Ann Coulter says, “For Libertarians you are all so MOB LIKE.” And MOB LIKE is the DEFINITION of a LIBERAL. Clones. Drones. Whenever I hear “Libertarian” I think of Vermont. And a Liberal. To me. NOt much difference. I agree with Coulter.

Posted on February 26, 2013 at 11:52amConservatives are shills for the oligarchy.
Tax the wealthy less and hope the wealthy’s largess flows the conservatives way.
Do away with consumer protections so the wealthy can amass even more wealthy and maybe their largess will flow the conservatives way..
Freedom for the wealthy and some kind of magical transference will happen.
The mouths of the conservatives are open to catch the trickle, but their seems to be a drought and even the trickle has dried up.
The dissatisfaction stems from the wealthy having amassed so much wealth that they no longer need conservatives to toady for them. The conservatives have been cast aside and have no further role in society.

Posted on February 26, 2013 at 12:17pm@MaryBeth;
Why don’t you REALLY tell it like it is Mary Beth? An Oligarchy is a SMALL NUMBER of people that have the POWER. They have amassed it thru: family ties, royalty, wealth, education, corporate or military control. So, since the US Congress is what I consider to be the Oligarchy in this country, or a small group of people with all the power, neither YOU nor I can say that they represent Conservatism, can we? NO! The Senate is Liberal. The House is Conservative. And the rest of the country votes them in. At the LEAST you can say that America is 50/50 in terms of WHICH Oligarchy they represent, either the LIBERAL OLIGARCHY which FIGHTS the CONSERVATIVE OLIGARCHY night and day. So, you can’t pin this all on Conservatives. IN fact, in Election 2012 we saw a shift in voting, didn’t we? 55 percent of women 18-24 voted in Obama. Hispanics the same. YET when you talk to Americans over all, they espouse Conservative principles (70%) yet these same people vote DEMOCRAT or Liberal. Why? Because of MONEY. IT’s all about MONEY Mary Beth and it always has been. The POWER is in the MONEY. Democrats are just as full of it as the Republicans. And everybody else is full of sickening ENVY and JEALOUSY to get rich like them. THAT is the problem in America. Everybody is struck with the SIckness of GREED. And FAME. 30% of young people in America have as their ONLY goal to get FAMOUS. How sick is that? PRetty SICK if you ask me!

Wrong, no surprise, your rhetoric is horrendous,,,
Socialist policies benefits the political and economic elites, guts the middle class and poor…
The 1% promoted the Occupy Movement, they benefit from State expansion and debt….
You simply are economically illiterate….
Deflation benefits the worker.saver, inflation steals from them and transfer wealth to the top asset owners.
The dirty secret is the Government and the 1% collude to use the political and economic system to extort wealth from the masses. by expanding debt… and inducing inflation..
You and your Collectivist cabal have everything backwards… conservatism is a straw man to hide the game,,, increased gov debt = inflation = redistribution of wealth from the worker/saver to the elites (assets price inflation)
this is Fascism not Capitalism.. socialism is Fascism

My intent is certainly not to insult you. I just can’t accept that people actually BELIEVE what you’ve written. This is because my husband and I are planning our old age with the fruit of our loins who happen to be the most “liberal,” yet we all are planning the same kind of life together, sharing the same values of hard work, family and self-reliance. This indicates to me that my family is all pretty much “counter culture” and that we need to start thinking of the future and not the stereotypes you have thoughtlessly espoused. Good luck and God bless, dear.

Actually, today’s alleged leftists are yesterday’s bourgeois – spoiled, ineffectual and incapable of solving the smallest problems. That’s why you willingly enslave yourselves to the state – you want a Daddy to do your bidding, because you are incapable of handling life on your own. Your attempt to define conservatives is not just inaccurate, but delusional – and is a projection of your own lack of worth as a human being. You need some psychiatric help so that you can finally be functional, but that might not be covered by Obamacare.

actually what happened was Clinton revamped the Democratic Party through the Southern Leadership Conference into what is essentially a wing of the Republican party. GATT, NAFTA, dismantling welfare, repealing Glass Seigal are all Republican initiatives. They now take money form the same lobbyists the the Republicans once were able to take.
There’s more Democrats then Republicans. The Democrats became Republicans. The Republicans became useless.
Conservatives are different. They take up the cause of the rich against their own best interest for some unknown reason. Self hatred probably.

I think they saw the dumbing down of America and have said enough. I think as time goes on these will be the new breed of conservatives. Not a nasty in your face kind of person like the liberals or the minorities who think they deserve something for nothing but people who truely believe everyone has an equal chance. Posted on February 26, 2013 at 12:04pmThe New Conservatives will be those kids who walk 10 miles in the snow to go for a job interview because they HAVE to (the kid’s mother had died. He had quit school. He was taking care of siblings). Conservatism is born out of necessity. For those young people who don’t fall into the category of rich mommy and daddy paying for everything with the MasterCard and for those young people who are expected to stand on their own two feet there is Conservatism. My parents expected me to get out into the world and earn a living. To buy my own clothes and shoes and what I needed at 14. This was the best thing for me. For every parent who is not just handing over their MasterCard and telling their kids to make money they are blooming a Conservative. But, for every parent who is just handing over their money or credit card they are truly adding to a Liberal in the making. When young children or teenagers are taught self reliance and earning their own way then we will have a country full of Conservatives. But, as long as Mommy and Daddy foot the bill we will continue to have a nation full of spoiled brat Liberals standing in line for handouts, begging just like they did with their parents. I can’t tell you the number of kids who just get what they want from their parents. It sickens me. It has added to an entitlement mentality that those who have NOT earned the money can just DEMAND and get it from those who HAVE earned it. This all starts in the home.

Posted on February 26, 2013 at 11:30amThe problem I see is until we start getting colleges to start “Conservative studies” courses, such as they did when they started forcing all these “Liberal” studies courses, which are now mainstream and most are “Required” courses. The only way we start taking the school system back is to use the same tactics that the left used to get their stupid ideology forced into the schools. Since we are the “Minority” viewpoint, start using the same laws the left set up to get them equal time.
Start using their own tools against them people.

Posted on February 26, 2013 at 2:11pmAre you referring to “Liberal Arts”? Liberal Arts focuses on those subjects or skills that in classical antiquity were considered essential for a free person (a citizen) to know in order to take an active part in civic life. Sounds pretty conservative, doesn’t it? That’s because it is very traditional, and thus conservative. You should really be protesting those ‘progressive’ academic disciplines like engineering, biomedicine, astrophysics, and the computer sciences. Those are the rascals trying to train these kids up to go out and change the world.

Being as she was in her mid 40′s, listening to a Professor tell her, she shouldn’t even bring her husband a cup of coffee if he asks, because that is submitting to male domination. And in the Minority studies class, her generation and her parents were just a step below slave owners and the clan. Both of those were REQUIRED to get your degree. THAT IS THE LIBERAL CLASSES I AM TALKING ABOUT. Not studying art or lit. Come on Marine25, show that you aren’t just a dumb Jarhead.

A maladjusted generation who will waste themselves away pining for their fantasy white America that is long lost forevermore, unable to understand that they lost not because of how they said things but
because of the things they said. When they lose, they can only lose because somebody cheated them. When they win, it was God’s grace or their manifest destiny. The sooner these cyclops die out, the easier the transition of the USA into the 21st century. Obama is the now and for the next four years. Get over it, or not. nope, “modern Liberalism” is an ideology imposed by the subversion of reason, subversion of the individual the subversion of critical thinking, the manipulation of context, propaganda and deception.
Modern Liberalism is Fascism,, it is a cult that requires adherence to a collective ideology.. it is intolerant, it promotes dependency and enslaves it brainwashes, it is sociopathic, it is deception..
Worst os all it enslaves and impoverishes the very people it claims to defend, the poor and middle class,, Modern Liberalism is elitism it empowers and enriches the elites… it sounds counter intuitive but the expansion of socialist policies demand more debt, more debt demands more inflation, more inflation makes the top 1% richer as assets rise, while wage earners lose,, Progressive and “modern liberal” policies actually transfer wealth from the wage earners/savers to the wealthiest asset owners through inflation.. Modern Liberalism is a scam.. Modern Liberalism is subversion of reason and obfuscation of truth… collectivism and its derivatives benefit the the wealthy..
