A Gay Man, a Lesbian and a Transgender Are Part of ‘Micah’s Rule’ — a Christian Band That Sings Gospel and Country Music

At first glance, Micah’s Rule looks like your traditional Christian band: A collective of three members whose main purpose is spreading the gospel through music. But when one looks beneath the surface, there’s nothing classical — at least when it comes to members’ bios — about the performers who have captured the attention of a plethora of media outlets of late.

If you thought Christian singer Jennifer Knapp’s story was a fascinating one, prepare yourself for this tale. See, Micah’s Rule, based in Wilmington, N.C., is made up of members who have some uncommon backgrounds, especially when compared to others in the Christian entertainment industry. According to a report in Salon earlier this month, Mary Anne Hewitt and Greg McCaw are both gay. Chasity Scott, on the other hand, is transgender.

But these attributes aren’t touted in the group’s official bio. Rather than using their sexuality as a tool to sell faith-based music, the group is intent on relegating it to the confines of their very personal stories. During a recent interview with Religion News Service (RNS), the members said that they don’t want these attributes defining them; instead, it is their music that they hope fans notice.

“It’s just our back story, plain and simple, but we’re not using that as a marketing tool for our music, positively or negatively,” McCaw told RNS. “We want to be a musical group like any other, but we realize our back story will get out.”

The band recently completed its first album, working with famed producer Mark Moseley in Nashville, Tenn., to see it come to fruition.

See a video montage of their Nashville experience, below:

While some would dismiss the group as un-Christian based on the aforementioned information, the three speak as though they are intensely religious. In their interview, they explained the roots and connections they have to and within their church. Still, their lifestyles are certainly not embraced by the majority of the Christian faith and will likely be seen as controversial.

Plus, breaking into faith-based music is difficult enough in its own regard. With these added elements, it will be interesting to see how they fare.

Hewitt, McCaw and Scott all attend St. Jude Metropolitan Community Church, a house of worship that reaches out to members of the gay community and their associated family members. The band’s name — Micah 6:8 — comes from a Bible verse that the church adopted, RNS reports. It reads, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Each of the band’s songs also takes on Christian themes — something that may also come as a surprise to those who take issue with members’ personal histories. RNS recaps some of the lyrics:

In “Walk the Road,” they sing: “Sometimes you just have to be the one to set your own self free … what matters isn’t what you’re told. But how you walk the road.”

Scott wrote the slide guitar ballad “Can You Hear Me?” as a prayer for her father: “I want him to see, Jesus in me, like I see Jesus in him. Can you hear me? Father, can you hear me?”

Kind of like saying Satan started a Christian band. You don’t have to be Christian to be a Christian?

I’ve seen tons of Christian bands. Not a single one of them had an accompanying story about who they like to bump uglies with or what they do/did with their genitalia. I can appreciate cute kid stories here at TheBlaze because kids are innocent, but these self-serving freak-show stories about attention-wh0re adults who think we should give a crap about their sexuality are a complete and total waste of time.

I don’t need to say “IMO” because my opinion is all I can offer anyway.

Their sexual proclivities are of no interest to me. Since they find it necessary to use it as a reason to consider them, well, OK. I consider you now unworthy of my time to listen to your work.

    Smart move jackasses.

I rarely if ever speak about religion online, but the time has come.

God and Jesus are the final arbiters, not the self-appointed earthly judges of sin and morality. Kudos to all the religious folk who can quote chapter and verse from the bible. Good on you.

I was raised very religiously, but as some would say, I lost my way, many years ago, and found science to be more realistic. Bad on me. But I still have my feet and soul firmly planted in my fertile upbringing. Teachings like “pride goweth before the fall”, “those without sin cast the first stone”, “judge not lest yee be judged”, and a simple golden rule for all “treat others the way you’d like to be treated” mean more to me than minutiae from the bible.

If God works through mysterious ways, and if He has a plan, and that can be used as an easy explanation to grieving parents why their kid was killed, or the slaughter of millions in the holocaust, etc, then why people are the way they are is part of His plan too.

I am not left wing, straight, and I am socially and fiscally conservative to my core. If someone has faith, I take that at face value, and will leave it to the higher powers to decide in the end. I personally find it hard to love my brother, but it’s one of Jesus’s main teachings. More people should live by that.

I’d say this band is getting to heaven. But that’s as easy as a lot of you saying they won’t. Quite frankly, it’s His business not ours.

      @DANIELMCHICK

If I said I hated the people who are the subject of the story, then I would be in this “flaming pot of bile” of which you speak, but I do not. I’m actually fairly indifferent to them. I just hate how TheBlaze publicizes this kinda stuff more than any site I visit and I wonder what the agenda really is. Maybe they earn money from the clicks? I really have no idea, but I think it’s a waste of space and a waste of time. Most here have already made up their minds one way or the other and aren’t going to change them.

this is the problem we have these folks calling themselves Christians they get into the church and start redefining what a Christian is until the church is no longer a Christian Church but is an occult,if they are abstinent then they repented and are in good standing, but yet they use their sexual preference in order to market themselves but say they dont want their lifechoice to define who they are, but if it were not for their life choice we wouldnt even be talking about these folks, gays are like tatoo wearers all they really want is all the attention to be on them….if they are truly talented then be defined by your music, but its too late they already exploited their preverse life choice as a vehicle to be noticed and sell records

There is an expression, ” One has to have lines drawn in life.” When one is wandering in the camp of Moses, and looking for their tribe, some hear faint rumblings and others hear Thunder – the one’s that hear the rumblings dismiss the Sound saying, ” It’s only God moving about the Mountains above .” However, the one’s that hear the Thunder recognize His Voice and move closer to where Joshua has drawn a line in the sand. When ” Judgment ” comes, and one hears in the distance, Rumblings or Thunder, do they move over to ” the line drawn in sand ,” or stay where the earth is crumbling beneath their feet?

Jesus declared: “I promise you that any of the sinful things you say or do can be forgiven, no matter how terrible those things are. But if you speak against the Holy Spirit, you can never be forgiven. That sin will be held against you forever.” — Mark 3:28-29

So here we have a music group that by their own admission have practiced sinful perverse sexual acts. The question is are they still engaged in such acts if so -then this is not a music ministry it is another satanic device designed to deceive the unwashed while mocking God .

Meanwhile they state that breaking into faith music is difficult, yet they have acquired an award winning music producer to promote their music.

Here’s a hint that they are all full S%&T one is still operates in drag -

    Matthew 7:23
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.WAKE UP

Does the distance that the world moves away from God, have a proportional relationship to the distance the church might? If the width of the road to destruction increases in width, does the gate to heaven get wider or narrower? I mean, since relative terms are used… narrow… wide… what are they relative to? Am I alone in this thought? Advice!

I consider myself a Christian, but I have question for everyone.

When Jesus returns what would you do, would you embrace him if he chose to test you and come back as a gay? Now some of you are going to say something nasty about that statement and maybe even call me a name or two. It is a serious question. God or Jesus could appear as someone we might normally shun, what are you going to do?

This is a ridiculous question and I will not answer it. God would not send Jesus back as gay. He is the king of kings and lord of lords, the great I AM, He is righteous and holy and does not sin.

I am simply amazed at the hate spewing from people who claim to be religious. You absolutely have the right to disagree with their lifestyle, but God commands us to love.
    1 Corinthians 13:13
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
