A Connecticut woman whose son died in the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center says she’s upset the Oscar-winning movie “Zero Dark Thirty” used a recording of his last words without her permission.
Mary Fetchet of New Canaan told CBS News and the New York Daily News this week that she was shocked the filmmakers didn’t ask if they could use the voicemail her son, Bradley Fetchet, left on her phone while he was on the 89th floor of the World Trade Center’s south tower.
“Could you imagine going to a film that had a loved one who had died at the hands of terrorists, and hearing the voice of that person and not knowing you were going to hear it?” Fetchet asked the Daily News.
She continued: “I was shocked that I hadn’t been contacted to be asked for my permission to use Brad’s recording. And (the screening we saw) was right around what would have been Brad’s 36th birthday and right around Thanksgiving.”
The movie about the manhunt for Osama bin Laden begins with the voices of 9/11 victims making their last phone calls.
Fetchet appeared with her husband on CBS News:
Fetchet isn’t the only relative of a survivor upset by the film’s introduction.
The brother of a flight attendant killed on American Airline flight 11 said: “We were never given any notification or asked for permission to use Betty’s voice, unlike many documentary companies…We’re asking that they apologize and that they recognize that they used Betty’s voice and Brad’s and others at liberty.”
Sony Pictures Entertainment said in a statement that the filmmakers contacted several relatives of 9/11 victims about using the voice recordings.
The statement read, according to the New York Daily News:
“Zero Dark Thirty was borne out of the tragedy of September 11, a day that left an indelible mark on all Americans, but none more so than those who lost so much on that tragic day. While the film tells the ten year story of how America brought the terrorist behind 9/11 to justice, we recognize that this remains a delicate and painful subject for many…
“That’s why the filmmakers, beginning before the film’s release, initiated contact with a number of family members of the victims of the 9/11 attacks, including some whose voices can be heard on publicly released tapes. We hope that Zero Dark Thirty is, in some small way, a tribute to those forever affected by the events of 9/11 and to those who worked so hard and risked so much to see that justice was done.”

Mar. 1, 2013 at 9:15amHHollywood doesnt know anything about paying their dues. They think they can do and say as they please and without consequences.
They get huge tax breaks, they make more than God, and they are spoiled beyond belief.
Real people need to draw the line and stop financial supporting these people until they learn to hold themselves accountable.
This families tragedy is a good example of how far Hollywood will go for ratings and fame.

Feb. 27, 2013 at 4:18pmOnce something has been released on news or into public domain, it is out there and usable-unless of course you have patented your dead relatives words, and I can’t think of anything more callus than doing so. Last words of a loved one are just a tiny moment in their lives, and being angry about this is not what I believe they would want for those who left behind. They are still carrying their hurt and anger-and for that I feel so sorry for them-anger hurts the angry person and they can’t find peace that way. 9/11 deceased have been honored as much as a nation can, I think the movie ment to honor their memory, I think the anger is very misplaced-unless of course they just want to cash in. Yes, I am getting petty, but this group was highly compensated for their loved ones deaths, our military should be so lucky.

Feb. 27, 2013 at 3:49pmThis is an inexcusable lack of humanity. Hollywood was only concerned in “using” these people’s deceased loved ones to make money or promote their agendas with no regard for their families.
Can they get any more repulsive?
Can Americans who fawn after them become any more repulsive (or stupid)?
We are an ugly ugly society.
We (as a society) will take advantage of any situation regardless of who is hurt. And if it doesn’t
exist, media or hollywood will “create” it and pawn it off as true while America swallows every bite
and longs for more. Scary to say, but we get the leaders we deserve. (a quote that I *believe* is acredited to Ben Franklin) We don’t know history, we are bound to repeat it just like we keep putting the same people into office and expect different results. The very definition of madness.

Feb. 27, 2013 at 2:29pmThere is something sacred about the last moments of the lives of those who lost theirs on 9-11! I saw the movie and was nauseated by that component of it. It’s bad enough seeing it on the news, reading a transcript about it, or listening to FOIA recordings on public sources. But, to have these snippets of lives cut short used in a for-profit movie production is a little much! I think the production company owes at the very minimum, a substantial donation to a charity for the benefit of the families who lost someone on 9-11, not to mention specific credits to the unfortunate who started their movie careers-post mortem.

Feb. 27, 2013 at 3:46pmI didn’t lose anyone during 9/11/01 so I can’t feel the way those who have lost. On the other hand, I believe there are many Americans that have taken that day for granted and so playing those recordings during the intro of the film was needed to remind those who have forgotten or neglected to remember.
I agree with the sacredness of the voice mails but those who were lost are a part of American history and they should be heard.

Feb. 27, 2013 at 2:03pmThe taped voices were released to the public, why does Hollywood need permission to use them? If anything, the families should have been contacted as a courtesy to let them know the film contained the voices of their loved ones. Secondly, the article says that relatives were contacted, so who’s lying?

Feb. 27, 2013 at 2:10pmThe filmakers didn’t need persmission the tapes were public domain. But the makers of film feigned concern for everyone involved they couldn’t fabricate a “voice from 9/11″? They are actors and writers right? Or garble it to hide identifying who it’s coming from? They essentially turned this family’s son into a cheap entertainment device.

Feb. 27, 2013 at 1:52pmFirstly…I have not seen the film nor will I ever see it. Regardless of the left’s issue with “torture” being portrayed as effective in the beginning of the film with footage of Obama decrying “torture” juxtaposed with it. This film was part of the Obama administration’s deplorable “football spiking” after the operation. Nearly a month after the operation, “A military helicopter was shot down in eastern Afghanistan, killing 31 US special operation troops, most of them from the elite Navy SEALs unit that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, along with seven Afghan commandos.”
This film was rushed into production after the death of OBL. The writer and director were given “unprecedented” access to operation details by the Obama administration. SEAL Team 6 didn’t even officially exist before Big Mouth Biden and the self-appreciating Obama opened their traps. Obama said the SEALs who carried out the operation: “looked less young and fearsome than he expected, and more like guys working at Home Depot.”
Obama politicized the operation 31 Americans and Afghan commandos died as a result of his inability to show any humility, couth or tact after the operation. This film is one more reminder of that inability.
I feel for the family but likely they can’t do a thing about the use of their son’s voice in this propaganda movie. The only way Hollywood will be taught a lesson is with our refusal to see films like these.

Feb. 27, 2013 at 2:07pmI want to add to my post….this family forever has to be confronted by their son’s voice in his last moments being used as an entertainment device by the vacuous creeps that infest Hollywood. His last moments reduced to a cheap plot sequence for a film where it’s lead actress and director are the darlings of Hollywood, complete with Golden Globe and Oscar nominations, Wolfgang Puck menus, dinner gowns and tuxedos for a night or two of mutual backpatting by the limousine liberals of “tinsel town”. The vulgarity of it defies description.

You can’t indite Jewish influence any more convincingly than they do. Actually they are quite proud of their effectiveness. Around 1903 there are discussions of Marxism they were trying to establish in Europe and Russia. Again they speak of it with pride.

Feb. 27, 2013 at 1:59pmCAVALLO…”SEAL Team 6″ was the overt Obama propanda movie. “Zero Dark Thirty” was the one that got “unprecedented” access to operation details by the Obama administration. So much so that congress began asking questions as to why this was taking place. Naturually the idiots in congress did nothing more than ask a few questions. Funnily enough…Zero Dark Thirty’s main protagonist doesn’t exist in real life. As if taking a cue from Obama’s ghost written (by Bill Ayers) “memoir” Dreams From My Father where Obama’s pensive “white” girlfriend is a “compression” of many of his girlfriends….she is supposedly a “compression” of the all real life intelligence operatives involved in the finding of Bin Laden.

Incorrect. Hollywood still has to ask permission to use the voice of a DEAD FAMILY MEMBER out of respect for that family. It’s the same as how I’d have to ask permission of that family if I WAS to use their sons voice in anything I create (several Youtubers have been hit with copyright infringement and violations for making 9/11 memorial videos and using the voices of people who had been murdered on that day, without asking for permission)
Thus, if those not part of the film industry have to ask permission, so to should liberal hollywood (but of course, we all know that LiberalWood is above the law)
