Dog Accidentally Shoots Owner With a 9mm Pistol (Yes, You Read That Correctly)
A Florida man ran into some unfortunate luck recently when his dog accidentally shot him with a 9mm pistol. The practically-unbelievable story purportedly unfolded while the man, Gregory Dale Lanier, 35, was traveling in his vehicle with the animal.
According to The Tampa Tribune’s Highlands Today, the dog kicked the gun on the floor of Lanier’s truck and it subsequently went off, with the bullet entering the man’s leg. The bizarre incident occurred on Feb. 23, with the Sebring Police Department ruling it an accident.

According to Highlands Today, the report described the incident as follows:Â ”When his dog kicked his [loaded] .380 pistol causing it to fire and the bullet struck his leg. Lanier said he heard boom, saw smoke and felt a burning in his leg.”
Sebring Police Cmdr. Steve Carr said that he hasn’t heard of a case like this before. Later, the .380 pistol was identified by authorities as a 9mm (Lanier reportedly didn’t initially realize the gun type).
Lanier told police that he thought the gun was unloaded. The Daily Mail notes that the pistol, under law, should have been stowed away, making it not available for immediate use.
Considering Lanier’s self-proclaimed surprise that it was loaded, it’s likely authorities are taking him at his word. But, legally, the weapon should have been in a glove compartment, a holster or in another more practical device.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 5:40pmRRAY, Both are actually 9mm. The 9mm Parabellum is a 9X19mm while the .380 is a 9X17mm and is usually called a 9mm Short in European parlance. Then I guess we could throw in the 9mm Makarov, which is 9X18mm.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 5:49pmI like Glenn, but considering he refers to cartridges as bullets on air, I am not surprised his staff is a bit uneducated about firearms. On a funny note, I was at a shooting range the other day and they had 30 rd AR magazine with a post-it on it which said “magazine” and next to it, a binder clip with a post-it saying “clip”. Too funny! I guess it really doesn’t matter actually. When someone asks for more bullets and they are not in the process of reloading ammunition, then we can assume they mean rounds or cartridges. We can then gently educate them in the proper terminology for future reference. It is annoying though when a beginner acts like they are an expert.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 8:10pmWell, if someone says a gun has 10 bullets in it, it would be somewhat correct in that the 10 bullets are mounted in the 10 completed cartridges. If someone wants to buy 10 bullets, sell him them and ask if he would like casings, primers, and some powder to go with them.

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 11:33amAnother name for a 380 round is ’9mm short’. A 380 round is 9mm X 17mm. The bullet is lighter too. The standard 9mm round is 9mm X 19mm. Look it up! Check it out!

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 11:44amI wonder which 380 pistol that dog licked? First of all, an unloaded weapon does not go bang! Dumb author. 380′s typically have no safety to lock the trigger, though a few do. To make the weapon safer they all seem to be double action. That is the hammer does not lock in the cocked position and therefore ***** as the trigger is pulled. Double action guns have a long trigger travel. That is safer than single action guns. The long trigger travel is highly unlikely to trip a sear from a lick. The squeeze is just not there. This guy lost his focus and shot himself in the leg. Ooh! That hurts!

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 3:20pmBlaze liberal leftist at it again – really Glenn. Well. the news article said a .380.
A firearm chambered in 9mm. Properly used, it refers to the 9x19mm cartridge, aslo known as 9mm Parabelum or 9mm Luger. Though several other calibers are 9mm in diameter, they should not correctly be refered to as “nines”.
9×17 AKA 9K AKA 9mm Kurtz AKA 9mm short is properly refered to as a .380, referring to .380ACP the proper American nomenclature.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 4:50pmBlame it on Mr. Lanier. He had a round chambered and the safety off. Guns just don’t go off and safeties are not deactivated by sliding off a car seat. Operator error. Lucky he and his dog were not killed. Also lucky it was a .380 and not a larger caliber because that could have gone through Mr. Lanier and his automobile and struck an innocent bystander.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 5:10pmNot all handguns have safeties. It is entirely plausible that the dog kicked the trigger with his foot, completely depressing it and firing the gun.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 11:35pmThough not all weapons have visible safeties, they all do have safeties that prevent firing without the trigger being pulled.
But yes, the man is the idiot here for so many reasons, such as ‘not knowing the gun was loaded’… his ass was on the line there; for not having the weapon in a proper place- on his body, the cubby, a box- any place but on the floor… again, he made an ass of himself; not knowing the caliber- minor problem since 9mm Short is often called a .380, so he can be forgiven the caliber indistinction; letting the dog lick the gun- made an ass of himself again- almost a ‘dead ass’. All because he ass-umed all the wrong elements of proper gun handling.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 6:05pmFrom about the early to mid ’80s forward many of these pistols have something of an automatic safety much like SIG, Glock and even the Colt Series 80 M1911A1s had this in addition to their manual safety. It is a built in block that stays firmly caught in a notch of the firing pin. It only releases when the trigger is pulled completely to the rear.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 6:27pmXANDERSON, Yeah, I’ve caught that recently too. We used to call them meat platter sized buckles back when I was first stationed at Bragg in the late ’70s. I had been to some rodeos before in Oklahoma and Texas, but had never really seen anybody wearing those around where I had later lived in Alabama, then Florida. Had an instructor in a course a few years later in Vilsek, Germany who made a point of telling everybody new to the country not to laugh at the differing dress between the rural and city Germans. His exact point was to just try and think of what the local Germans must have thought seeing a newly arrived GI in his civies consisting of cockroach in the corner killer cowboy boots, blue jeans long enough to have the back of each leg cuff scuffed heavily on the boot heels, a huge oval rodeo belt buckle attached to a worn leather belt that was over a foot too long that hung down to one side, a black concert T shirt of any variety, then topped off by a huge cowboy hat adorned with a variety of feathers across the front tucked in the pagri.
