We Asked, You Responded: Blaze Readers Passionately Defend Their Ownership of So-Called ‘Assault Weapons’
On Tuesday, TheBlaze asked readers who own one or more semi-automatic rifles, like the AR-15, to explain why they chose that particular firearm. The response was overwhelming as hundreds of emails came pouring in from gun owners across the country.
Many claimed they use a semi-automatic rifle for home defense, while others said they regularly go hunting and target shooting with their firearms. However, many bluntly stated that they own a semi-automatic rifle because the Constitution says they can. Several readers also slammed Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-Calif.) assertion that so-called “assault weapons” are nothing but “personal pleasures.” Feinstein is leading the charge to ban “assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines.
TheBlaze has compiled some of the responses from readers defending their ownership of semi-automatic rifles, which includes AR-15s (the most popular response), AK-47s and the World War II-era M1 Garand. Surprisingly, there were a lot of responses from Californians. We’ve edited some of the responses for grammar.
Kerry, retired law enforcement officer, from Washington
I am in a unique position in that I am a retired Law Enforcement Officer after 32 years of service. In 32 years, I have never had an so called “assault weapon” pulled on me. Pistols, bottles, knives, screwdrivers, yes — AR-15′s no.
My wife and IΒ keep an AR-15 for many personal reasons. I fell in love with them in the military and she loves shooting hers.Β We useΒ them now for target shooting, competition and personal protection. As far as personal protection, I don’t mean from someone breaking into my house, I find a pistol or shotgun much handier for limited close combat. I am speaking more in the way of a disaster such as Katrina. Living in the NW, we are overdue for an earthquake. Should we have one and due to the geographics of Washington, I don’t expect any help from the government for quite awhile, therefore I may be required to defend my family from gangs of looters or thieves. Until that day comes, my AR-15 sits quietly in my fireproof gun safe, well oiled and sighted in for a day I hope never comes.
Mike from California
I ordered an AR-15 as a birthday gift for myself years ago and shot it over several years. Never gave it much thought it was just a nice Colt.
When the Los Angeles riots broke out, I realized how lucky I was to have that gun. That Colt kept my block safe, despite the fact they burned down the mall just 100 feet from my house.
When things got real, I carried that AR with me and patrolled the street around my block for 3 days. I had a couple of close calls but when the rioters came back and saw that Colt, they wanted no part of it.
Myself and a few other people on my block received awards from the city of Los Angeles because of our actions during the riots,Β but IΒ think my Colt deserved an award. After all it kept my entire block safe!
W. Garcia from Phoenix, Ariz.
My girlfriend owns an AR-15 style rifle. She owns it because it is light and easy to shoot. She is 5’1″ and 110 pounds. She cannot control our shotgun. She believes she can use the rifle to keep herself safe until the police arrive,Β which in my area can take a couple of minutes. She also uses it to compete,Β as she enjoys shooting sports. She asked me to include that she feels like the Democratic party doesn’t respect her right to protect her body.
Chris from Atlanta, Ga.
I am a competitive shooter.Β Currently I shoot USPSA pistol matches but I plan on shooting some three gun matches (rifle, shotgun, pistol) and to be competitive in that sport you need a semi-automatic rifle with over 10 round magazine capacity, a shotgun with over 8 round capacity and a pistol with over 15 round capacity. This is my sport. I played football in high school and college. I dislike playing golf but I like the shooting sports. Yes, I also use my competition guns for home defense which shows they can be used for multiple uses. As to the suggestion that a “woman should just use a shotgun” proposed by Joe Biden, my girlfriend finds my AR-15 much easier to handle and shoot than my shotgun.
Matthew from Phoenix, Ariz.
As a still serving, currently retiring member of the United States military, I use my AR-15 semi-automatic rifle for every application I can, but self-defense and target shooting are the top two.
Recently, an intruder chose the wrong time to attempt to rattle my door knob. I had just finished putting the finishing touches on a charging handle upgrade when he figured it was a good time to check and see if my door might be unlocked.
He received a heck of a surprise when he peered through my front window and was looking down the 5.56mm opening at the business end of the barrel!
Luckily that day he chose to run off and not try his luck, but I don’t think he’ll ever forget it because I sure won’t!
In all the time I have carried a duty weapon I have only ever pointed my weapon in the direction of two individuals. My AR-15 was one of these incidents.
My AR-15 DID protect my home and my daughter that day, I DID use it in self defense, I CAN use it efficiently and have been trained to and I TRUST IT WITH MY LIFE!!
Donna from Murray, Ky.
I am a 54 year old woman. I own more than one semi-auto. I have a 30-06 that I have used for years for Deer hunting. I also have a .223 (which is what they want to banβwhich by the way is almost the same caliber as a .22βused to shoot squirrels, varmints and such) The .223 is kept for protection…The .22 Automatic (which holds about 16 bullets down the barrel and would be banned yet has been around for over a hundred years) is used to shoot varmints, and for rabbit hunting. I have several others, which really donβt have a specific βuseβ because most can be used for anything.
Ii people are taught about guns, as I was taught, and as I taught my children, you donβt have people that are βafraidβ of them as the Anti-gun people are.
What people do not understand is that these guns they want to ban are exactly like βregular riflesβ other than cosmetically.
John from California
My wife and I are lifelong Californians, I am 33 and she is 27. I am a firefighter and she is a stay at home mother of our two small children.
We have a “California Legal” AR-15 with flip up sights, collapsible stock, flame arrester, barrel shroud, pistol grip and a “fixed” magazine of 10 (detachable with a bullet button).
We chose this weapon for home defense because of how light it is, easy to shoot, incredibly powerful yet still accurate, fun to shoot, and although it is so powerful, it has little kick to it. Β We also enjoy shooting it for fun at targets.
Billy, from somewhere in the U.S.
I bought an AR-15 because I may, it’s my constitutional right to do so. I use my AR-15 for target shooting (Appleseed), and I can hit a man-sized target at 400 yards. I also consider my AR-15 to be a home defense weapon. Criminals using guns killed 8,583 people in 2011.Β Only 358 of those homicides (4.2%) involved the use of a rifle. Dianne Feinstein has no factual basis for proposing a ban on “assault weapons,” only an unspoken desire to disarm law-abiding citizens.
Chad, member of the U.S. military
I am a soldier of 16+ years. I shoot my AR-15 at target ranging from 25 to 800 yards. I participate in both “combat” and “high power” matches.Β I use high capacity magazines because the number of bullets range from 1 to 30 depending of the type of match. These matches help me to refine my skills as a shooter, therefore increasing my effectiveness as a soldier.
I am also teaching my wife to use it because of the fact that I travel a lot for both the military and my civilian jobs, leaving my wife alone at home withΒ our twoΒ young boys. The AR-15 is a perfect weapon to teach someone to shoot because it isΒ light weightΒ and has very little recoil. With the high capacity magazines, it allows her to protect herself and our boys from multiple intruders while also giving her the leeway to miss her intended target. We all know that when someone is confronted with a home intrusion, unlike the movies or TV, you are going to miss sometimes.
Jeff from Salt Lake City, Utah
I use my AR-15 mainly for target shooting. However, If the need did arise, I would use it for both hunting and self-defense of my family, myself, and my country.
Christopher from California
I was compelled to respond because I am not only a gun owner but a Californian resident. I use my “firearms,”Β in a limited bases. I have several firearms–pistols and semi-automaticΒ rifles that I have never fired.
I am a son of a U.S.A. Army veteran and a grandson of a command sergeant major with 30 years of service. I am also a former boy scout which has taught me to always be prepared.
I have these firearms for just that reason. I want to be prepared, to be responsible for my safety of my family and if ever the case, my community.
Feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below. Did any of these Blaze readers make a good case against banning semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15?

Our firearms are for safe practice, competition, deterrence, and safety, both from indvduals or lawless groups, and from any Federal body or agent who believe law abiding citizens do not have the right to possess such firearms.
Honestly, the family time associated with these firearms hae made them some of our better investments

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 9:43pmI would have to admit that I am not a big fan of large caliber semi automatic rifles, not because there is anything wrong with them. It’s expensive to shoot them. I like a 22 semi auto. I don’t own a Corvette that will go 160 MPH because I can’t afford that either. But if we can buy cars that go that fast when we have speed limits across the country that prohibit that speed. Why can’t I buy a semi automatic rifle or hand gun that has a large magazine ?? I do have a pistol with a 14 round magazine and it is very tame and docile. It never once has gotten out of control, it just sits there or hangs on my hip or it even goes for rides in my car?? NO Problems at all. I think the solution may be to paint BLACK guns PINK. That will make the libs crazy. Another thing, I hope you all realize that this is NOT about safety, it is about disarming law abiding citizens…. Tally up the freedoms we have lost in the name of safety, or ” it’s for the children”. Some good ideas BUT it used to be our decision to protect ourselves; NOT BIG BROTHER.. Keep your powder dry!!!

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 9:58pmAmen to that. What happened to me is a perfect example. I was carrying a legal rifle, in a legal place, where licensing and registration is not required. I got detained, questioned, and searched by the local police chief because according to him, I was not allowed to carry my rifle in town due to the recent shootings. Carrying a rifle was the sole reason given for stopping and searching me. Not talking about a simple frisk for weapons, searched 3 layers of clothing, entered all my pockets, and even checked in my boots.
So next time you are following the law, carrying you firearm around, remember it doesn’t matter whether you followed the law, because police will do as they please and walk all over your rights, because you are on your own and no one is gonna step up to help, trust me I’ve been looking..

Posted on March 1, 2013 at 9:34pmFeinstein says Assault Weapons must be banned because of how many people are killed in gun violence. Well, more people are killed by cars than by guns each year so unless she also demands a ban on all motor vehicles, she is nothing but a lying hypocrite and she should be discarded like last week’s donuts.
In her defense though, I must say we should go easy on her. She just hasn’t been the same since someone dropped a house on her sister.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 8:08pmYes, but that argument can be used for any weapon, from a club to a cannon. It’s true that responsible people can be trusted with a nuclear weapon (I wonder why we let anyone in Washington have control of those with that statement made1?) but we have this tendency (and it’s getting worse) to govern to the LEAST common denominator, being criminals. But to defy all logic, we penalize law abiding people, ignoring the fact that the criminals (by definition) DON’T CARE what laws you pass.
So, the only argument that seems to matter is these petty attempts to vilify one firearm or another.
I own an SKS, it was inexpensive when I bought it and it’s as accurate as my friends AR-15. It’s more accurate than his AK-47. It’s also more reliable than the AK. It is also on the ‘banned’ list and it meets all of the criteria for being legal (save for the bayonet lug). It is only banned because it is a commonly available semi-automatic rifle that has a bayonet on the front of it (scary looking I guess even though I’ve removed the bayonet and installed a bipod on it).
Is that what ‘freedom’ is…no, not at all, but it is what out of control governance looks like and to that end, I agree completely.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 9:29pmAllow me to clear up this entire argument. No “law” that congress passes or executive order the sitting president signs can or will take away my Second Amendment rights. Why? Because my rights are granted to me by God and not bestowed by the government. There is no higher authority than God so there is no one that can take away my rights. I can give them up but I won’t. It may and probably will someday cost me my life to defend those rights but they will never be taken from me so long as I draw breath. P.S. that goes for all my rights as well. The government receives it’s authority from the consent of the governed. I hereby withdraw my consent.

Posted on March 3, 2013 at 3:34am@SILVERTRUTH… I live in California and I too keep an abundace of firearms around the house. I, as you, have my trusty SKS (actually three of them; Russian, Yugoslavian and Bulgarian), target shoot with them regularly and keep them all “prim and proper”. I have several CZ-52′s and TTC semi-auto pistols as well, not to mention an extensive collection of Mosin-Nagant rifles and carbines, Austrian bolt action carbines and Swiss, straight pull, sort of bolt action rifles and carbines. this includes, of course, a fairly large ammunition store for the lot of them. I do not use all of them every day; they are here mostly because I collect such things – a hobby; but loaded examples of the above are always close at hand at home… as they should be.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 9:48pmThey will, and very soon. The whole reason for the second amendment repeal debate is because Obama (raised, groomed and positioned by communists) is planning to allow Russia and China to invade the United States. Even now, Russia is positioning their military equipment for a diversionary attack against Alaska. They want America disarmed to make it easier for them to take over. ANY politician that advocates gun control is a communist and traitor, and should be tried, convicted, and sentenced for treason….and the penalties that entails.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 6:57pmThe national debate over the “need” or desire of a citizen owning an AR-15 is a complete waste of time and energy. What we are witnessing is a classic slight of hand by the MSM, to focus on one type of firearm while hiding their true goal – total disarmament. The AR-15 platform is not the subject. The original intent of the Founder’s draft of the Second Amendment is the issue.
Ultimately the attempts by the Marxist Left to outlaw/ban firearms and ammunition WILL succeed, and they know it. It is only a matter of time. The vast majority of The People are uneducated or misguided sheep that care only about Kim Kardashian. Furthermore, (with few exceptions) the elected Republicans, controlled by The Establishment in Washington, are full blown cowards. Preserve the Constitution? Sorry. No help from that quarter; we are no longer a representative republic. That leaves the Judicial. The true Constitutional patriots residing there are few in number and the last bastion of Law and oversight. But sadly (as we have seen with Obama Care) they can no longer be trusted to follow the law, and are apparently swayed simply by public policy and what Brian Williams thinks. We as patriots can prolong America’s demise but not prevent it from happening. It is a sad, and very slow death.

Posted on March 3, 2013 at 3:58am@1SSF… I think that I have to disagree with you almost entirely. Roughly 80% of this country is no “citified”… and I live in a part of it that is not citified either… a little town in the mountains at more than a mile in elevation and with a population of about 1000. In the firearms department, that 80% of the country pretty much owns what they want to own along with the ammunition to go with it. In a town like mine, any of the government’s restrictions on what you may or may not own, or hom many of anything (firearms) you are allowed to own, is pretty much taken with a grain of salt. Local deputies out here in the boonies ar aware of that and take no argument with any of it. They will gladly provide the signature required on any FFL application and in many states, even your CCW application. These people out here in 80% of this country will not entertain the actions of the clowns in Washington DC when it comes to the Peoples’ Second Amendment Rights! I’m 65 now and I have been watching this country for a long, long time. I now feel that this country is due to fall, completely, in the very near future. The 300,000,000 firearms in the hands of the law abiding public that are presently out there will be just as necessary in the aftermath of that happening as they were in 1776. Facts.

I’m not knocking military grade carbines, they are awesome for all around defensive purposes, but specifically for home defense, a shotgun tends to be a better choice unless it’s limited in function (non-repeating or less than 3 rounds). Your ammo choices alone are broader and more easy to customize to your home environment, even if you move from a prairie home to a condo.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 8:52pm@Silver,
Hate to say your wrong about a carbine, but, your wrong. A shotgun is not a better choice than a .223 carbine.
Back in the eighties most SWAT teams carried two standard long guns, a shotgun and a sub-machine gun, either a MP5 or something close. The problem was over penetration. Pistol cartriges and shotgun slugs/pellets would go through several walls, even exterior walls and still have enough energy to kill. The answer, the .223 caliber. Because the the bullet is light in weight, and because of the bullet design it did not hold up well to hard barriers such as walls, floors, and concrete. Unless it is a straight shot at sheetrock, the bullet, when it strikes the wall, will break at the fulcrum (shoulder) and start to come apart, the bullet expends almost all of it’s energy and is almost completely spent by the time it exits out the other wall ( all interior and exterior walls have dead space or insulation in between) and is far less likely to kill someone on the other side. That is why it is the primary weapon used by swat teams these days. (Shows you how long I’ve been around, man I’m getting old…I mean seasoned, LOL) My wife’s home defense gun is my M-4 Carbine with a light. Short, easy to shoot, almost no recoil, and I don’t have to worry as much about her killing one of our children if a bullet misses and goes through a wall. Nothing more frightening than a five foot tall, plump, and pissed off woman with an M-4 at the top of the stairs

Posted on March 2, 2013 at 12:26pmWhich is where the bit about varieties of ammunition comes into play. If you need maximum flexibility, a shotgun is not a bad choice. You can get rounds for it that vary from self-stabilizing slugs that will shoot a 1″ group at 100 yards, to flechettes that will penetrate soft armour, but not sheetrock, to bean-bags if you want a less lethal option available.
Of course, you still need another weapon to be able to decently reach out beyond about 100 yards. A rifle with safety slugs is another good choice for accuracy and stopping power combined with not over-penetrating the target.

Posted on March 3, 2013 at 4:24am@ OLD-DEPUTY-RICH… You are right about wall penetration and the like. I have three different SKS carbines for target shooting and possible home defense. The SKS is a relatively low powered carbine, the firing of which is similar, in my book, to weapons using the .22 magnum. I do have a couple of CZ-52 pistols and they; in their natural state and with the ammunition that they were designed to work with, are another story. With their “proper” round they will penetrate body armor within the confines of the average home. They would go right through an intruder, out the other side of him, through the wall, and continue on to do who knows what in the way of further damage. So… I have retired the ammo that they came with (at the range) and purchased a large quantity of JHP ammunition to feed them with. i carry them “cocked and locked” on my own property and keep them close at hand; and in the same condition; around the “alarmed” house. The SKS’s are very nice, light and reliable carbines, as are the CZ-52′s light, accuarate and depenable little pistols. Some of my heavier “artillary” are Mosin-Nagant (and other) bolt action rifles and carbines but, for the most part, they are not as convenient or as light to carry and to use around the house… and they do kick like mules! My favorite rifle of all time was the M-14 (US army days) but they are still very expensive and are not suited to close quarter defense purposes.

Dear Sir,
What is the story behind the unusually huge demand for ammunition, arms, and armored vehicles from the Dept of Homeland Security? I’m reading reports of DHS ordering BILLIONS of rounds of ammo; tiny towns in NH and Arizona getting $250k ea armored Bearcat vehicles; body armor, etc…I’m reading these stories on Glenn Beck’s The Blaze, and online news site.
I checked the local sporting goods store to see if this was true, and they asked me if I’d been under a rock since Christmas!! They said commercial ammunition was VERY difficult to get, and showed me their empty shelves. I asked about prices and they said that prices have gone up dramatically. Mr. Issa, what is going on?
Thank you.

I have been doing my best, for three years now, to stay ahead of homeland security. I, myself, have been purchasing SKS”s, Mosin-Nagants as well as CZ-52 and TTC pistols (along with plenty of ammunition for them) via the internet and some of it on an international basis. I am licensed. Up in this neck of the woods you have to go on vacation to get anywhere near a gun shop so that was out of the question. What a gun shop may of may not have in stock in none of my never mind. They are always to expensive in my book anyway. Those CZ-52′s are “too hot” when used with the ammunition that they were designed to use (they are guaranteed to penetrate body armor at closer distances) so I now feed them with JHP’s. I am not “citified” as you may conclude.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 4:50pmWe live in the boder country of New Mexico. You know, where “It’s more secure than ever”. NM is also a higly corrupt state that is run like a third world country. having spoken out against that corruption, has gotten my wife and I some serious threats. We won two semi auto rifles. “The Green Monstah” in .308 and the “Mousah” a AR type rifle in .223. We also live far enough out in the bush that we are visitd by lion and bear on a regular basis along with coyotes and once a wolf. We are also close enough to the line that we see our fair share of two legged vermin. We like large magazines. My wife is an eastern school marm and I hate to see her afraid. She is confident with her tools and her skills, she isn’t afraid of much. Of course we could use some help on the corruption front, but I don’t see it comin’. So we’ll just take care of ourselves as best we can and try to unelect our RINO POS govorner in a couple years.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 4:44pmTo a sensible honest law abiding citizen, owning a firearm whether it is a black, brown, green, semi-automatic, double barreled or bolt action firearm is much like buying insurance for the family. It allows most responsible citizens to sleep better at night knowing their family can and will be protected if an intruder uses that 10 inch slot screw driver to gain entry into their home. When the U.S. government elected officials deny the right of firearm ownership or place road in front of the honest law abiding citizens right for self protection, it is time for the people to make some drastic election choices next election. God Bless America and Winchester.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 4:42pmi have a winchester model 63 .22 rifle. it is a semi-automatic that was bought by my grandfather in 1937. from my understanding having read feinsteins proposed gun ban, i believe it would fall into the “must be registered and forfeited upon my death” category, because it can hold 10+1 for a total of 11 rounds. am i correct on this? does the government want my .22cal rifle bought by my grandfather 76 years ago??

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 3:52amNot unless you want to. A gun purchased that long ago was sold when Americans knew the reality of freedom, and the only “registration” that might exist is the sales receipt your grandfather might have stuffed in an old footlocker somewhere.
Rifles could be bought from the ads found in the back of comic books, fer crying out loud! And they were mailed to your house! Old guns like your grandfather’s are the reason the grabbers can only estimate how many weapons are in the hands of their American servants.

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 9:16amYes Any so called Law to take guns away from the people is against the constitution. So It is NOT a legal law. This is the LAW A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. I will Die to defend it. WE SHOULD ALL DIE TO DEFEND IT.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 4:13pmI am a mostly-retired cattle rancher and welder/fabricator in Wyoming. I live on 13.5 sq. miles of private property. Having so much land (with a County road running through a corner of it) means dealing with frequent trespassers.
Some come to poach game, some to drink or use drugs or spend *quality time* with their girlfriends late at night, some to rock-hound, and others to just hike or explore because “their GPS said they could”. While ~70% of these folks are benign, the other 30% are downright seedy.
I carry various semi-auto “black rifles” (and occasionally NFA-registered full autos) precisely BECAUSE they are scary-looking. When I come across a couple drunk antelope poachers with bolt action rifles, I have the “intimidation edge” won, hands down. I don’t point my weapon at anyone, but it’s ready in my hands. It’s just amazing how quickly people change from “Who are you, telling me what to do?” to “Oh, I’m so sorry! I didn’t realize we were on private land. We’ll being leaving now. Sorry, again!”
I realize other places aren’t Wyoming, but this IS and I will not lose the edge on my property. Do whatever you want in New York or Chicago. I will never go to those places, ever.
Having loaded weapons in my house doesn’t mean I live “in fear” any more than having a fully-charged fire extinguisher in my kitchen closet would mean the same. I hope I never need either one, but it’s better to have and not need, than to need and not hav

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 8:13pmHey, CONSPIRATOR, don’t think it hasn’t crossed my mind. My rancher “neighbors” might raise cattle but THEY are sheep. They always take the gov’t “candy” for hay assistance, or irrigation pipe, or grasshopper spraying… They NEVER read what’s on the BOTTOM of the candy bowl. Sad. I’ve never taken a dime, in all my years here and because of it, Big Bro has no right to “inspect” any part of my property.

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 12:18pmSGT_ROCK – Nope… That’s because you need WATER to grow dope, and this is Wyoming! ;-)
Actually, 20 years ago, I DID find two plants of MaryJane. I suspected it was my Mexican hired hand’s “project”, so I tied a piece of baling twine to the chicken-wire “cages” around them and miraculously, they were all gone the following day!
Our big problem NOW is Colorado… I don’t care what they do down there, but I’m tired of being a suspect just for driving north out of CO with a WY license plate. I do not feel like sitting on the side of I-25 in 60 mph wind outside Chugwater for two hours, waiting for a freaking K9 unit to sniff around outside my truck and decide I have nothing but 4 lbs of Espresso Sierra beans from Whole Foods.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 4:12pmThe citizens should be equally armed as government to ensure liberty, anything less is a danger to liberty and freedom from government. We have a right to bear arms, that means any arms we purchase and not dictated by some power hungry POS lifetime politician from Commiefornia. Show me in the constitution where it states we can own a certain caliber or so many rounds in a magazine.

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 4:05pmOne of the real problems I see is the lack of ammunition. Their needs to be more semi-auto military style rifles with a larger variety of ammunition choices. 30-06, 30-30, 7mm Mag, .243, .300 Mag are just some of the choices I have seen that still are in good supply on the shelves. Recoil might be a problem with the same design, but there should be ways to mitigate the recoil problem of some of those heavy hunting rounds.
