Clint Eastwood Urges Supreme Court to Overturn Gay Marriage Ban

AP

Actor Clint Eastwood has joined more than 100 prominent Republicans in calling for same-sex couples to be allowed to legally marry, just months after his prominent appearance at the Republican National Convention.

American Foundation for Equal Rights spokesman Manny Rivera confirmed to TheBlaze that Eastwood signed on to the amicus brief to the Supreme Court, which is hearing a challenge to California’s Proposition 8 ban on gay marriage. Word that Eastwood had signed was first reported by Breitbart News.

Rivera told TheBlaze the brief was expected to be submitted to the Supreme Court Thursday afternoon.

Other signatories include former Republican presidential candidate and Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, former Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman and former California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, who supported Prop. 8 when she ran.

Editor’s note: This post has been updated to reflect that more than 100 Republicans have signed the brief.

What an interesting crowd. If somebody says something you like, he’s the best person in the world. The next week if he holds true to his principles (libertarianism), you jeer and call him the worst kind of sinner in the world. Next month if he says something amusing and bad about Obama, he’ll be right up in the King of the World spot again.

Nothing like being absolutely reactionary and emotion based. Can’t imagine going through life like that.

      They’re all truly cowards.
Their ideas are like shifting sand, with no base that moves with every whim of man.
What qualifies Clint or any other man to defy the laws of nature in favor of perversions?
Why don’t they just try to defy the law of gravity and take a flying leap?

I fear our country has degraded to the point that we are about to become victims of our own greed, perversion, and so called “freedom”.

This same attitude is a syptom of the attitude that has us 16 trillion in debt. Immorality and perversion always translates into a broken country because it is run by broken people with no God given baseline.

      I recently read Eastwood’s biography.

He has fallen prey to what many men (or women) want to do. He had the money & therefore the opportunity.

From a purely libertarian point of view what he says makes some sense or total sense. But I can see it ending badly.

frankly I DON’T CARE if they marry or not…

It is a State’s Rights issue and the people of the state of CA have now voted 3 times to BAN gay-marriage…CA does have Domestic Partner laws and Civil Union laws that grant same-sex couples the same right to file on state tax returns and receive state aid as if they were married. The people of the state of CA just wish to protect the Institution of Marriage as a union between one man and one woman. That is within their right as a State. There is NO discrimination in the eyes of the laws of CA, you just have to check Domestic Partner instead of Married on the CA 540 tax return form.
Your health care provide MUST allow you to add your “partner” just like you add a spouse.
You can go to city hall and get a Civil Union decree just not a Marriage License.

My main issue with gay-marriage crap is that if the couple breaks up and has a child due to one of the women using IVF, the biological father (even though he and they entered a contract saying he bore no financial obligation) can still be sued after the break up for child support from the biological mother but gets no visitation rights, no parental rights, and has no claim to sue and take the child as the primary parent nor does his family if the two mothers die.

We used to be one nation under God.
We used to be endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights.

Now were a divided nation under whatever you want to stand for.
Now were endowed by activist with the rights they want.

With out a standard, we will not be able to stand.

It’s amazing to me just how deceived we are as a nation, but the sad part is we deny our error to our own destruction and the destruction of those around us.

The government should get out of the marriage business completely whether it’s straight, gay, horse or robot. They shouldn’t recognize marriage at all. Marriage should be between you, your partner, church, friends, family, ect. The government should not be keeping track of who is shacked up with whoever or who is deeply devoted to whoever. If you want to say you are married to your pet rock or your job that is your business.

I could really care less. While I understand many other religious people can’t get past this, we have so many more important issues to deal with right now. This really isn’t the right fight to pick right now. However, the vast majority of the American people have voted, so overturning that isn’t the answer. It’s like abortion. I’m pro-life but the Roe V. Wade is what it is. Let’s fix the economy first, then we can talk about all the other issues.

Actually, this is not a state’s issue. Not only is it illogical to have different marriage laws in different states and have the problem of who recognizes what, anytime a group is being discriminated against, the problem needs to be fixed, not left up to a vote. If civil rights had been left to the states to decide, what would have happened? Where would we be now?

I am so disappointed in Mr. Eastwood. And here I thought he was a real conservative. I WAS WRONG. He is a MODERATE. He ain’t no conservative.

Gay actions are an ABOMINATION BEFORE THE EYES OF THE LORD, according to the Bible. To allow them to marry before the Almighty is MOCKING GOD and that will be punishable after death.

I feel sorry for the active homosexual. Love the sinner, hate the sin and that is how I feel. THESE PEOPLE NEED OUR PRAYERS. Being homosexual is NOT NORMAL. It’s like saying GOD LIED WHEN HE MADE MAN AND WOMAN. think about that people.

I am tired of being politically correct. I have a friend who WAS a homosexual. IT IS NOT SOMETHING YOU ARE BORN WITH!!!!! THAT IS A LIE OF SATAN.

After years of counseling and being in a Biblical church, he is now happily married TO A WOMAN and he now has 4 kids. Of course, the devil will always throw challenges in front of him, tempting him, but HE TRUSTS THE LORD and prays constantly, which is what it takes if you want to be righteous before the Lord. He tells me all the time that God opened his eyes and he is so humbly grateful.

ACTIVE HOMOSEXUALITY IS AN ABOMINATION BEFORE THE LORD, and isn’t that what every person should be concerned about? WHAT ARE YOU DOING BEFORE THE LORD THAT IS SINFUL? You will answer for it sooner or later.

TO ACCEPT HOMOSEXUALITY AS NORMAL IS ALSO AN ABOMINATION BEFORE THE LORD.

Honest question… Wouldn’t it be the libertarian position to allow the states to make these decisions for themselves, and not have the Fed interfere?

I understand that government shouldn’t be involved in marriage in the first place, but aside from that, shouldn’t we want the Supreme Court to stay out of a state’s legislative decisions?

Gay marriage is about a lot more than just the marriage ceremony. We have seen our schools flooded with sexual filth that is touted as “sex education.” It is really homosexual education. Beyond that, we have seen the gay agenda spend a lot of time and money to take down every Christian symbol in the land. Activist gays are demeaning the moral compass of the country and causing much pain and heartbreak to the youth of this country in the process. Republicans who feel that bowing to the gays is going to get them elected are wrong. We will not vote for people who support immoral lifestyles of any kind.

      Eastwood isn’t up for election.

I do agree that pandering to a 3% minority at the expense of the rest of your base is a bit stupid. Maybe they aren’t doing it for that though. Or, maybe they really are stupid and think that the television-world “every other person is gay” narrative is the truth.

In any event, equality before the law must apply, and marriage isn’t in question here, it’s civil unions. Nobody can force churches, the actual religious institutions where marriage resides, to honor anything.

@Ghost, They will try to force churches to accept it. They assault churches all the time. They even assaulted an elderly priest in San Francisco as he was trying to give mass. Government should be out of the business of marriage completely, and that includes using the police power of the State to force anyone to accept someone else’s definition of marriage. They want to force you to accept their perversions as normal. They’ll use the schools, the State, and the media to get you to accept that their twisted practices are normal. They don’t want equal treatment under the law, they want to change society through force, coercion, deception, intimidation, and violence to accept them as normal. They’ll force their way into churches and assault elderly priests (which they did in San Fran), they’ll instruct toddlers that they are sexual objects and perversions in kindergarten. They’re vile, evil, and no victory will be enough for them. They want to punish you for being normal, they want to hurt you because you are normal, with normal feelings and emotions. Nothing will be enough for them. Give them an inch and they will take a mile.

Saying gay marriage is wrong doesn’t mean I’m claiming to be sinless or even better than a gay person. It just means I take God’s repeatedly stated position on it. Would you have to be sinless to say people shouldn’t murder, steal. or lie?

And you are free to follow your morality and preach to those whom you consider as sinners.

Marriage shouldn’t be in the bailiwick of the government in the first place, it’s a church institution. Civil unions on the other hand are in the government domain, and according to equality before the law, all consenting adults must be treated equally.

If you want to preach against them and convert them, then by all means do so. The moment you make a given segment of society exempt from equality before the law, then all of us become exempt from equality before the law.

so, if God says its wrong than shouldn’t it be between God and the people who are engaging in the marriage? What does it have to do with you? If you choose a straight life and marry someone of the opposite sex, that’s fine. why does another persons marriage matter to you? There is only one judge. He is not on this planet. Only he can pass judgement. you say the government should keep out, yet you want the government to make sure its not legal. If a church doesn’t want to marry gay people, they don’t have to. if they can find someone to marry them, than so be it. if its not in a church or any religious place than its obviously not done before God so again, what do you care. those people will have their day of judgement just like you and I will have ours. We will atone for our sins just like they will.

Shows how massively brainwashed the entire nation is. I have no trouble accepting legal equal rights with respect to a relationship, but it is NOT a marriage, needs to be called something else that describes the union, a man/man or woman/woman each needs it’s own distinctive term. If I am introduced to someone, the term used for the partner (who may not be present) should be descriptive enough for me to KNOW whether it is a man or a woman that is the partner. The hijacking of language and the meaning of words is 1984 stuff. This is not anti gay, it is pro common sense. The conning of America is so simple and easy. The disemboweling of America’s values and traditions, sense of right and wrong, is very sad.

      @ghost

u said: Marriage shouldn’t be in the bailiwick of the government in the first place, it’s a church institution.

Actually, it is NOT a church institution- churches have only recognized what existed already; kind of like ‘laying on of hands.’ I say that with full and certain authority for it was instituted in Eden, where NO church was represented at all.

Therefore, more correctly, marriage is an INSTITUTION of TRUTH.

      @John

That’s splitting hairs at best, being pedantic at most. Regardless, it IS a religious institution no matter how you slice it. Which is fine.

The more I think about this though, it really isn’t a federal issue at all, there is nothing in the Constitution that even defines or deals with traditional marriage, let alone any other form of union. To rule on this SCOTUS would have to invent penumbra out of whole cloth.

Hm….I may need to think about this a bit more. The last thing we want to do is see any power given to the Federal government regarding marriage or civil unions (where again, they have no power defined) where they have no Constitutional authority.

I never realized a psycho sexual dysfunction was covered under the constitution.

    oh wait…IT ISNT.

Clint’s appearance with romnut at the convention cemented my view of him as a liberaltarian. They are no more than hybrid liberals with a fiscally conservative sense.

Anyone who thinks that they can be both conservative and for homoe marriage is sadly self misinformed.

Even the ‘fiscally conservative’ part is a lie. For, as sure as you create a new special interest, you will have lobbyists jockeying for tax dollars. Thankfully, the gov. is already broke, so they won’t get much! Romney allowed gay marriage in his state.

Actually, Simple, given your sampling of posts across this forum, it’s not that you don’t believe in God, it’s that you place government into the role of God.

Maybe you could have, for once, come here with a relevant social comment, instead of just looking to provoke others. I’ll bet it never occurs to you that the reason why libertarians want nothing to do with you people is that you’re so noxious.

While I PERSONALLY agree with the Bible, is it truly our place to pass judgement? I think in order to get government OUT of our lives it needs to take this step. I am very tired of the SPECIAL rights that are accorded to the gay community and this would put a screeching halt to it. All government needs to do is adjust the tax base so that married/ unionized have the same benefits under the law, it can STOP THERE.

What happens on judgement day is my problem and my problem alone, as I also sin in the eyes of God. You sin in the eyes of God- we ALL do.

What I see is Romans 1 coming to pass and knowing the inevitable outcome, all any of us can do is BE PREPARED.

Ghost, I honestly don’t care if two guys want to call themselves married. I have a problem with the tax payer footing the bill for benefits to the partners of homosexual government employees and the inevitable mandate on private businesses to do the same. When that happens, and you know it will, a company like Hobby Lobby or Chick Fil A will have to pay for spousal benefits of employees who the company has a religious conflict in supporting. Ultimately they will have to choose between compliance or dropping the coverage for straight spouses. Of course then there will be unending lawsuits against churches who refuse to perform gay marriages.

No, it’s not. I was stationed in California in the mid 1980′s when Clint was mayor of a town there. He claimed then, and has never claimed otherwise, that he’s a libertarian. We’re all about the Constitution and equal treatment before the law. Marriage is not the domain of governments, frankly speaking, so you can continue to have and hold onto traditional marriage. Civil unions on the other hand must apply to all equally or to none at all, in order for all to be held equal before the law. Since equality before the law is a prime cornerstone of Rule of Law, treating everybody the same under the law is requisite to upholding a Constitutional Republic.

      @GhostofJefferson,
Far be it from me to dismiss any form of Libertarianism so please allow me to rephrase:
How did the politics of Gay Marriage take precedence over job growth rates, unemployment, a 17 trillion dollar deficit, illegal immigration, absent foreign policy and domestic energy exploration?
      And the answer is:
The White House, The MSM and…… Hollywierd.
