He was already a renowned neurosurgeon but also became a conservative icon essentially overnight after delivering a powerful speech critical of President Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast earlier this month while the president sat only a few feet away. Now, Dr. Ben Carson is slated to speak at the upcoming Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) and will likely become one of the events shining stars.
To learn more about how he developed his belief-system, Glenn Beck hosted Dr. Carson on his program Thursday evening to discuss the the surgeon’s upbringing and influences: his mother, and Booker T. Washington.
Dr. Carson credited his mother with nurturing an environment in which he and his siblings read avidly (despite wishing to play outside with friends instead) and were opened to new worlds of achievement.
In terms of the problems facing the nation today, Dr. Carson pointed to moral relativism, telling Beck that “political correctness dictates that there is no right and wrong.”
Moral relativism, as it did with the ancient Romans according to the doctor, causes people to lose their sense of self and value.
“And I think we as Americans are beginning to lose that,” he added.
“One of the founding pillars of this nation was freedom of speech and freedom of expression and when we give up that freedom by succumbing to political correctness,” Carson said that Americans are allowing that underpinning to be compromised “without debate.”
Dr. Carson said he believes God is with him, and “if God is for you who can be against you?”
“Is it harder to follow God when you want or do not want to do something?” For Dr. Carson, he believes God opens and closes doors and to pray for guidance and see how it feels. He said while some things may feel glamorous, it may not “feel right” and that is what really matters.
He also explained where he falls on the political compass and how he supports the constitution.
Watch part one of Carson’s interview via TheBlaze TV:
Beck and Dr. Carson went on to discuss a range of issues including wealth, the medical community, politicians, and whether or not he would ever run for office.
Part two:
Part three:
Following the prayer breakfast, Carson revealed that he actually refused repeated requests from the White House to furnish an advance copy of his speech prior to the event.
Carson told The Hill that he rebuffed the White House’s request because he does not write out his speeches in advance of speaking engagements.
“I told them that I don’t have an advance copy because I don’t write out my speeches and I don’t use teleprompters,” he told The Hill. “They asked more than once … I gave them the [Biblical] texts around which the remarks would be framed … I said read those texts, the remarks will be framed around those … that should have told them something.”
During his speech at the prayer breakfast, Dr. Carson criticized Obama on the economy, taxes and most notably, health care. He told TheBlaze that following the event, Obama thanked him personally for his remarks. Since then, has expressed that he does not regret that his candor may have been construed as offensive to the president.
“I always pray before I give a speech and ask God to tell me what to say,” the doctor explained in an interview with the Daily Caller about the backlash from his remarks.
“I said some things that perhaps I wasn’t intending to say, but it was the right message. And judging from the response — I mean, there are millions of people out there who are so concerned, and have almost given up, and they’re just re-energized by the thought that maybe, there’s still some common sense left.”
In terms of whether or not his speech was offensive, Dr. Carson said it could only be construed as offensive “if you’re an ideologue and don’t like to have anyone challenge what you think.”
But if you’re an individual who understands what our government is supposed to be — and that is something for, of and by the people — then it’s not offensive at all when one of the people comes out with some suggestions; it’s not seen as an attack.”
Bonus: Here’s some additional details about Dr. Carson’s background.

Mar. 1, 2013 at 1:20amThe Dr. is a genuine article. His Second Amendment question was about a topic he is less targeted on. I believe he will give it due diligence prior to being asked again. I note however, he believes in all the Bill of Rights and in our Constitution. Could you imagine if we had a President currently in office with just 10 percent of Dr. Carson’s wisdom?

Mar. 1, 2013 at 1:56amI didn’t like his comment when Glenn asked him about guns. He said he didn’t think semi automatic weapons were a good idea where there were a lot of people present. I tuned out after that. With this conversation going on for the last several months I find it hard to believe he hasn’t had time to think about the subject. He’s seemed well versed on the Constitution and he’s very intelligent, so I was confused, and honestly, turned off when he said it. When the interview started I told my spouse that I will keep an open mind on him until I hear what he says about the Second Amendment. I was really disappointed when I heard what he had to say on it.

Mar. 1, 2013 at 4:39amThat is NOT what he said. The point he was trying to make is that LOCAL governments have the right to make decisions for their jurisdiction. And you must hear the rest of it; if you live in a very populated area and there is a likelihood of that gun falling into the hands of a crazy person.
Don’t be too quick to judge. A real constitutionalist recognizes the right of a local – even a state – government to make such rules. For example, a state may establish a state religion; the federal government may not. The more local the government, the more leeway it has because those in power and those who are governed become closer to being one and the same. It’s only when you become more of a statistic and less of an individual that those same allowances become worrisome.

Mar. 1, 2013 at 8:13amI don’t agree with his position on guns, but at least he is honest. He didn’t want it national law but only local.
But I don’t think he has really ever researched that particular topic in depth, and as a doctor he has probably seen his fair share of brain injuries by guns, not to mention experiences of growing up in inner city Detroit that probably influences his view on a more emotional level. He obviously doesn’t understand that if people had guns they might actually provent the gun from being stolen by using it in self defense. Whereas a criminal will find a gun it they intend to use one by other means if they intend to use one.
Still I think his position probably comes more from the pacifist adventist view than necessarily understanding history behind it. See Desmond Doss who would not carry a fun in battle but served his country with bravery.
I don’t think he would try to push his position on others.
Again even if I don’t fully agree with him he is refreshingly honest. He is right on many things when it comes to common sense ideas.
I’d suggest trying to politely send him any information on history of gun control, and ask him. Ivey to read them, and see if he is willing to change his position once fortified with knowledge and truth.

Mar. 1, 2013 at 8:20amThose getting their hopes up over this man being elected are being foolish.
This man is not electable. Jesus, Bible, Christianity, Salvation…..are not buzz words to this man. He is a genuine, real deal Christian, and he actually believes his Bible. He believes in a Holy Spirit, he believes in creation. He is not a fake. His religion is real.
His type will get destroyed by the media. If Dr Carson begins to look like a real threat, the MSM is going to do a full court press on him, and they will destroy him. When Jon Stewart, Maddow, Bill Mahr and crowd begin to ridicule this man’s beliefs, they nation will have no use for him.
Main stream republicans will hate him also. They are fake, and Carson is real, and republicans are not looking for real.
You are getting your hopes up over nothing.
Start looking for a RINO with a big cheesy smile, a used car salesman hair cut, and a long record of appeasing liberals, and get behind him. He will be your next republican looser who will get beat by Hillary.
Keep it real.

As for Adventists and historic pacism in the main church here is an article that discusses it (but gives an example were the local Austrian/German sub-organization turned from the pacifist ideals and embraced the national movement going on at the time for obviously bad results. Unfortunate the organization, went down a different and darker path compared to Bonhoffer.

Mar. 1, 2013 at 7:38pm@TOADICUSREX I watched all of it. Yes, he did say to leave it up to local governments, but he said he didn’t want to see guns in populated areas where guns might fall in the hands of a criminal. Like Chicago? Detroit? Don’t people in cities have a right to defend themselves?
There are many local governments that are passing unconstitutional gun control.Go to the Second Amendment Foundation website and look at all the lawsuits they have brought against various states and cities to overturn the unconstitutional laws that are being passed, especially at local levels. So saying it’s okay for local governments to do it isn’t good enough for me, it’s a cop out, really. He conveyed it’s okay to have a gun in the country, but not for the people where there is more dense population. So would that mean a city in general, or an apartment complex, theaters, shopping malls, churches and schools? If so, I don’t agree with that, You are either for the Second Amendment or not. I don’t agree with any restrictions on it, we have too many as it is. From what he said, I came away from the interview with the feeling he is okay with gun control. If he clarifies his position maybe I’ll change how I feel. We shall see.

I agree, I don’t think he understands the the reasons for the 2nd Ammendment. He needs to read more up on it.
You can probably understand his current reasoning more if you read about some of his history in Detroit where he saw family memories die to violence;
“Perhaps even worse than the overt racism that I witnessed on television was the systemic racism I witnessed in my own family. My aunt Jean and uncle William had two grown sons who frequently stayed with them in their dilapidated multifamily dwelling. My brother, Curtis, and I were very fond of our older cousins, who always made us laugh. But both of them were constantly in trouble with the police, which resulted in their brutal, racially motivated beatings or Uncle William having to bail them out of jail. Unfortunately, their close friends were drug dealers and gang members, many of whom were killed or died young. Ultimately both of my cousins were killed because of their association with the wrong people.”-Ben Carson, America the Beautiful.
It’s obviously this has had an influence on his viewpoint, emotion, that what he has probably witnessed as a surgeon.
Still if he read teh founders, he’d probably come around.

Feb. 28, 2013 at 10:42pmI was very isappointed on every single answer Dr. Carson gave. It’s clear while he’s not a liberal, he’s not as studied on the issues addressed. Examples:
Guns don’t kill people, people kill people, yet he’s woried about semi automatic weapons being owned by people in big cities; either people kill people or guns kill people; it doesn’t change from makes and models. Populatio density also doesn’t change that. A person way out in the country can, after all, DRIVE to a populated area. And wha exactly makes a peson in a populated area any more crazy than country guy/gal? That doesn’t eve make sense.
What in the world would the type of experimental drug matter if your DYING?
And noticed how gracefully he dodged one of Glenn’s questions (also note how Glenn missed it!): are rich people greedy or not. Dr. Carson did not say, instead he said we needed rich people.
I don’t think Dr. Carson means any trouble and he’s on our side, but so was Rubio, Paul Ryan, Rand Paul, etc., but slowly but surely we found out they weren’t quite what they had sold us, and now we got a Hagel vote with mealy-mouth garbage for reasoning, an amnesty plan that involved being in the same room with a smiling McCain, and poor Ryan — sure didn’t take long;not all the waythere, but they’re on the train to Establishmentville. I can only hope we find what’s wrong with Dr. Carson BEFORE God suddenlytells him to run for office.

Mar. 1, 2013 at 7:21amI think you might be reading too much into Dr. Carson’s comments – I took his answer re: guns as it should be left to the locals and that in compact groups (like a crowd) their could be collateral damage from gun fire..
Anyway, the only person I agree with 100% on everything is myself. And since I am not running for office, I have to find those with whom I can agree at least 80% of the time – Those you mentioned in your answer fit that formula, as does Dr. Carson. We have to come together on the big things first then work on the exceptions to come to an agreement or accept that there are some things that we will have to agree to disagree on. I

Mar. 2, 2013 at 4:33amHere is the problem with the drug issue, as a doctor his job is to ‘do not harm’. He is not going to be willing to prescribe ‘experimenta’ drugs if he thinks those drugs may do more harm than good.
It’s a catch-22… If he issues the drug, maybe it might kill the person, and he doesn’t want to cause euthenasia.
It’s a difficult moral dillema.

Mar. 2, 2013 at 5:52amAlso in the world of lawsuits a doctor prescribes something and then the patient dies the family could go after the person for malpractice.
Intact they may have false hope that their family member would be cured by the medicine, but the see the death as being caused by the medicine. Thus all the more likely to in their emotions to think the doctor lies to them and persuit a lawsuit.
On side note it is lawsuits like these that cause the cost of medicine and healthcare to be so high. Ben Carson discusses the lawsuits and the need for tort reform in his book.

Feb. 28, 2013 at 10:52pmDr. Carson says, and I quote, ““I always pray before I give a speech and ask God to tell me what to say,” the doctor explained…
So God Almighty, God in Heaven told Dr. Carson to criticize the President’s policies?
Ya want to know the weird thing about people who believe God is speaking to them? God, if you believe God is speaking to this person or that, tells all those people contradictory things (and I’m just talking about Americans and not even about to start about other countries and other religions).
Some people think God is telling them to support politicians who are in favor of taking care of the poor. Other think God is telling them to support politicians who governmental policies support the rich.
There is one certainty. If one person tells you God told them to support one position, then there’s another person who will tell you God told them to support the exact opposite position.
That puts you as someone who is listening to both people in an awkward position. Who is God actually talking to since both claim their opinions are based on the Word of God? How do you decide?
My guess? You just believe whoever says what you want to believe anyway. And you are comforted that God is telling someone something you want to believe anyway. Any if anyone says God is telling them something different, well, that just is their imagination.

Feb. 28, 2013 at 8:14pmFor years now the rightous have been ridiculed. The family unit has been attacked. Patriotism is not vogue. And only the most decadent actions get praise from the media and the left (one and the same). So this is no surprise, the only way the left will gain the power they crave is to destroy the family value and belief in God, destroy the virtrue and honor of Americans and instill their own twisted value system where you can do what feels good, and if anything goes wrong, it’s someone elses fault. Welcome to United States of Feelgood and Fornication.

How many times has hollywood portrayed families as disfunctional, the dad as a flaming idiot (think Simpsons), Single parents are always put into a good light, Modern Family as an example, gay couples as the norm, etc.
But as you say, NO ONE.

Feb. 28, 2013 at 10:29pmOh keaton….I’m starting to lose faith in you again. Are you yourself an illegal? Do you really believe in amnesty for criminals?? They broke the law. Why do they deserve amnesty?? Do you feel sorry for them because Mexico is such a horrible place to live? Well although I might agree with that if that’s how you feel, they still broke the law! So many other people have come to this Country and have done things the legal way. Why reward criminals?? If that’s the case then why are people in jail for committing crimes?? Why not just let everyone break the law and get away with it? We can have people just pick and chose whatever laws they decide is right for them. Why have any laws at all??

Feb. 28, 2013 at 8:09pmSo far, a very cool dude.
Now if he would call Obama out on being ineligible, that would be great!
Boycott businesses advertising with the servile lying media that won’t report the truth about Obama’s Article 2, Section 1, ineligibility: http://youtu.be/esiZZ-1R7e8 or his identity fraud: http://youtu.be/alVzyfptF80
Vote out every traitorous politician and judge in both state and federal government refusing to enforce Article 2, Section 1, of the Constitution! http://puzo1.blogspot.com/2013/01/barack-obama-de-facto-president-of.html

FIND A CALVARY CHAPEL IN YOUR AREA AND GET YOUR HINEY THERE AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE!! Go for a month of Sunday’s and if the service and teachings don’t peak your interest, well then I give up.
