The Katherine Smith Elementary School in Houston held an assembly on Tuesday. The program — which was forwarded to Houston radio host Joe Pags — was innocently titled, “A Dream Come True – Living in the present by remembering the past and looking forward to the future.”

Image: Facebook
According to the program, the show featured three cast members — one student acting as a speaker and two as Michelle and Barack Obama, and students singing seven songs. As you might expect from the title of the show, and the image below (also from the cover page), most of the songs are a salute to civil rights heroes like Rosa Parks and Dr. Matin Luther King, Jr. But there is also considerable adoration heaped upon President Obama.

Image: Facebook
While the majority of the program might be considered to be an over-the-top tribute to President Obama, the very first song, “Feels Like Change” actually takes a shot at President Bush.

Caption: Facebook
The rest of the songs, as they were performed:
I Have A Dream – Dr. King is the complete focus of this song.
It’s A New Day – This song sounds more like something that was sung the morning after Obama’s first win in 2008.
I Believe – Another song with lyrics that seem to come from 2008 and the days leading up to and just after the election.
This One’s For You – This song is a complete tribute or salute to President Obama.

Image: Facebook
Following that Obama tribute was another song that tied the president to Rosa Parks and Dr. King.
“Rosa Sat” is quoted on the front page of the program and includes an oft-repeated refrain:
Rosa sat so Martin could walk
Martin walked so Barack could Run
Barack ran, he ran and he won
So that all our children could fly.
Those words are repeated six times during the song. But there are some other verses that have raised eyebrows from parents:
Thousands of people that November night.
All of us here were for the long fight.
Now we’re as one,
Creating a new nation.
Join together in celebration.
By having students sing “all of us here were for the long fight” assumes that 100% of the children were supporters of the president. Were they? Additionally, some parents have asked about the line saying, “Now we’re as one, creating a new nation.”
TheBlaze has contacted the Katherine Smith Elementary School several times, requesting an interview with Principal Salazar. As of this writing, Ms. Salazar has not responded to this request. We have also asked Terry Greer, the Superintendent of the Houston Independent School District to comment on the topic.
As this story was going to press, we received the following response from Superintendent Greer’s spokesperson.
The song lyrics you received were used as part of an after-school PTO program celebrating Black History Month at the school. Students who participated had signed permission slips from their parents to participate in this after-school event. They danced to the music, but did not sing or otherwise recite the lyrics. Copies of the lyrics were given to the parents, but not the students. This program was organized by three first-year teachers, who mistakenly failed to get the principal’s approval to distribute the song lyrics. After reviewing the lyrics, the principal agrees that some of the songs were overly political and should not have been included in the program. The teachers who coordinated the program have been reminded that materials such as this must receive prior approval by the principal in the future. The principal apologizes to those who may have been offended by some of the lyrics that were included in the PTO program.
How do you feel about the program?

Feb. 28, 2013 at 2:21pmUnfortunately the liberal progressive elitists have a lot of useful idiots at their disposal. Many, many of them in the educational system, from the teachers themselves to the college professors, sometimes the school boards and definitely the National Education Association as well as the Department of Education.
Must take back the school boards at the local and state levels, and then face the daunting task of taking back the colleges and universities that are pumping out the liberal teachers. The Department of Education should be literally dismantled.
To put it mildly. America needs a wakeup call. We can not continue to run moderate or RINO Republicans for the highest office in the land and expect to win elections with a Casper Milktoast message. Believe it or not people, including the Blacks and Spanish are looking for real Americans who will stand up for truth, speak it forth and not back down.
Obama and the Hillaryites are what they are. They are what the Progressives will continue to bring forth. They profoundly can be beaten, but you better come forth with a messenger of truth who will speak it forth, and stand behind it, come Hell or high water. When? Now!

Mar. 1, 2013 at 9:13pmThere’s just as much Liberal nonsense coming out of Texas as any other state, and maybe more than most. Think about the Texas border. Think about the Hispanic (Mexican decendants) population. Think about how many state government politicians and workers there are that are hispanic. Texas is quietly becoming another California. It WILL be purple within 5 years because the next presidential election will rely on the newly proclaimed citizens from Mexico. And I’ll almost bet they’ll have dual citizenship. Don’t kid yourself TX, open y’all’s eyes and see what’s a commin”. It seems that a good percentage of the news on this site pertains to TX. Not sure if it’s because Beck is there and the Blaze feels obliged to. That or they’re having issues. just like every other state, only most other states don’t have the constant influx across the border as they do. But we all have the illegal issue. Texas, close your border like AZ. Find an Arpaio or sheriff with cajones. I wonder who I teed’ off with this post. And I’m just commenting on how it’s changing more quickly than people realize.. If you’re looking to retire (I assume you’re in the age range of 50 to 60 yrs old), I would suggest you consider the climate here. Summer is hot and humid. Winter is bitter cold and the wind blows most everyday. If you just want to live your life and not mess with our lives, you are welcome. We have a great community here. There are many things to do. We have local get togethers that include fried fish, smoked pork chops, frogs legs, soup suppers and street dances. All of these get togethers are usually donation optional. Those donations help our local fire departments. We have lots of fun, food, beer and fellowship. If you think you could fit in with us, we would welcome you.

Feb. 28, 2013 at 1:02pmRedfish, of ALL places in Texas you could choose, Austin is one of the worst! (In my humble opinion) Stay away from Austin, San Antonio, Houston, El Paso, Dallas county, and the border. There are plenty of conservative places in Texas, but is seems like more and more liberals are moving into the big cities and turning them blue. West Texas is one of the most conservative areas. Abilene, Lubbock, Amarillo. I live 70 miles north of Dallas and it’s super conservative here. There’s even a huge difference between Dallas and Ft. Worth. We’re trying with all our might to get rid of this CSCOPE curriculum. I don’t know how the libs in Austin ever got it passed (well, because we refused the Common Core, then they put a new name on it and disguised it a bit and fooled people). Anyway, we need as many conservatives in Texas as we can get. I’m about ready to close our borders to everyone coming from the east and west coasts. They fled from progressive states for lower taxes and a better economy, then they want to vote for liberals who are going to turn Texas into what they left. Where’s the sense in that? Sorry, rant over!!! I just don’t want to see my state turn purple or blue.

Feb. 28, 2013 at 2:05pmThe Gablers use to monitor the school books for the remanufacturing of history by the progressives with the progressive influence in companies like Harcourt Brace, MacMillin McGraw Hill, Houghton Mifflin, Pearson Scott Foresman. and others, nearly all of whom who have “doctored” the school books to delete history and fill them with progressive thought and reflective agendas. The Gablers, Mel and Norma have since died, But their organization in Texas, Educational Research Analysts, is still in existence monitoring text books put out by the various textbook companies. It is important to back what that organization is doing, as Texas is one of the main states that school boards in other states model their textbook selection from.
When you analyze the degree to which the Progressives have infiltrated our culture, institutions and businesses, as well as our government, it seems like the gargantuan task of removing them is impossible – extremely difficult, but not impossible, but we certainly need more committed boots on the ground and an infusion of the divine intervention of God Himself would certainly be a plus factor.

The goal here isn’t just to save our own kids and leave the rest be, it’s to fix the broken system so that in a generation we don’t have a liberal run state. Can you imagine what would happen? More laws that make it harder to home school, take away our freedom to live the way we want to, eat the foods we want, teach our kids the religion of our choosing. Home school, by all means, please! Just don’t be an isolationist. Fight for our schools and children. They are our future, and there are a whole lot more of them in public school than home schooled (or private or Christian school). Feb. 28, 2013 at 12:40pmthose little girls who recently dressed up in the burqas were White. And now this. Remember White liberals will go along with anything that is Anti American, Anti White , Anti Conservative and Anti Christian. And will use their own children to further their sick , suicidal , liberal agenda.

Feb. 28, 2013 at 11:48amNo doubt. A lot of this BS comes from Texas, like the CSCOPE thing a couple weeks ago. Whoever is writing the textbooks down there for the whole country needs some exposure. Keep hearing about how Texas is so great, prove it.

We True Texans firght this crap everyday, every major city in Texas has been overwhelmed by liberals from cali. detroit shitcago, new orleans etc…..not to mention the illegals. The sad part is, the only way to really get rid of these pos’ is for our economy to go belly up,well there is another way,but it involves jail time, or lethal injection……
