Indoctrination? Houston Public School Assembly Slams Bush and Heaps Praise on Obama (Update: District Apologizes)

The Katherine Smith Elementary Schoo l in Houston held an assembly on Tuesday. The program — which was forwarded to Houston radio host Joe Pags — was innocently titled, “A Dream Come True – Living in the present by remembering the past and looking forward to the future.”

According to the program, the show featured three cast members — one student acting as a speaker and two as Michelle and Barack Obama, and students singing seven songs. As you might expect from the title of the show, and the image below (also from the cover page), most of the songs are a salute to civil rights heroes like Rosa Parks and Dr. Matin Luther King, Jr. But there is also considerable adoration heaped upon President Obama.

While the majority of the program might be considered to be an over-the-top tribute to President Obama, the very first song, “Feels Like Change” actually takes a shot at President Bush.

The rest of the songs, as they were performed:

I Have A Dream – Dr. King is the complete focus of this song.

It’s A New Day – This song sounds more like something that was sung the morning after Obama’s first win in 2008.

I Believe – Another song with lyrics that seem to come from 2008 and the days leading up to and just after the election.

This One’s For You – This song is a complete tribute or salute to President Obama.

Following that Obama tribute was another song that tied the president to Rosa Parks and Dr. King.

“Rosa Sat” is quoted on the front page of the program and includes an oft-repeated refrain:

Rosa sat so Martin could walk

Martin walked so Barack could Run

Barack ran, he ran and he won

So that all our children could fly.

Those words are repeated six times during the song. But there are some other verses that have raised eyebrows from parents:

Thousands of people that November night.

All of us here were for the long fight.

Now we’re as one,

Creating a new nation.

Join together in celebration.

By having students sing “all of us here were for the long fight” assumes that 100% of the children were supporters of the president. Were they? Additionally, some parents have asked about the line saying, “Now we’re as one, creating a new nation.”

TheBlaze has contacted the Katherine Smith Elementary School several times, requesting an interview with Principal Salazar. As of this writing, Ms. Salazar has not responded to this request. We have also asked Terry Greer, the Superintendent of the Houston Independent School District to comment on the topic.

As this story was going to press, we received the following response from Superintendent Greer’s spokesperson.

The song lyrics you received were used as part of an after-school PTO program celebrating Black History Month at the school. Students who participated had signed permission slips from their parents to participate in this after-school event. They danced to the music, but did not sing or otherwise recite the lyrics. Copies of the lyrics were given to the parents, but not the students. This program was organized by three first-year teachers, who mistakenly failed to get the principal’s approval to distribute the song lyrics. After reviewing the lyrics, the principal agrees that some of the songs were overly political and should not have been included in the program. The teachers who coordinated the program have been reminded that materials such as this must receive prior approval by the principal in the future. The principal apologizes to those who may have been offended by some of the lyrics that were included in the PTO program.

Let me begin by saying I’m absolutely no fan of George W. Bush. The song is right, it does feel like a change. That change, however, is for the worst. Sad to say that I would take G.W.B. over B.H.O. any day.

I seriously can’t even begin to imagine why anyone would prefer Obama when they didn’t like Bush. Obama is like Bush – only about ten thousand times worse and America hating. At least Bush doesn’t hate America and he was president to all of America – not just president of those who thought he was doing a good job.

P.S. “Thanks” to all you libs. Because of you, I now have to defend Bush.

To me comparing the assclown Obama to Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King takes away so much from these true hero’s. He has done nothing that would put him is the same class as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King.

Houston is following the lead of other large urban cities by electing an openly homosexual mayor and making a big deal of “gay rights.” This opens doors for EVERYONE to squeel for special privileges. The entire metro area is turning into a piss hole.

You might look out in the hill country west of Austin. Kerrville, Fredericksburg, is a good area to put up your tent. Plenty of towns out there in the hill country where you can settle.

Wow,the liberal progressives have taken over the education system from preschool to colleges. The funny thing is…is that it will be that generation that feels the real pain of Obama’s policies. They will have no one to blame but themselves.

After school PTO event? What in the world is wrong with that PTO? PTO is about bake sales and school carnivals, parents getting involved in school-related activities for their kids. Now they are the arm of the totalitarian state? How do we battle this pervasive evil that is overtaking us?

Typical non-apology apology. This does not make me feel any better. They got caught boot lickin’ and had to say something. Parents of kids in this school need to stay vigilant. It will happen again.

Do these idoits really think that having kids repeat something like this will actually do anything but outrage the public…just because we have a radical president and radical news media ..it does Not mean America is ready to chant silly songs about a American president who held office for 8 years and kepted this country safe and out of debt.
We are tired of all the communist bullies that their leader..Obama has brought out from under the stones across America….when it comes down to it…your out numbered and will always be out numbered, period.

Listen up everybody – TAKE YOUR KIDS OUT OF PUBLIC SCHOOL! Unless you want them to be commie pinkos. I recommend homeschooling, because I think a little bit of this is in private schools as well, but for God’s sake, please TAKE YOUR KIDS OUT OF PUBLIC SCHOOL!

These apologies, after the fact, are meaningless. The damage to the minds of the children has already been done, and now, they get a bonding moment with their corrupt educators as the school gets a dressing down for corrupting the minds of youth. To an ignorant child, it’s cool to be “anti-establishment,” which is no doubt how the leftist educators will try to spin it to them.

Anywhere minorities are in charge or dominate there is chaos, disorganization and misery. They probably don’t even know MLK was a registered Republican. The students are probably mostly hispanic and black and I pity any white or asian kid that has to go to school there. Houston in not Texas no more than Miami is Florida. These big urban jungles of hostility are the reason America needs some serious ballast to keep afloat.

All of the salutations and praise that they have for Obama is because he is the ****, the big celebrity .They never sing about any of his positive acheivements because he has none. This is pretty scarey that so many are following the pied pipper blindly into oblivion.
