Man Dies After South African Police Tie Him to Van and Drag Him (Warning: Disturbing Video)

JOHANNESBURG (TheBlaze/AP) — They bound his hands to the rear of a van, and then sped off, dragging the slender taxi driver along the pavement as a crowd of onlookers shouted in dismay. Following the horrific scene, the man was later found dead.

A gut-wrenching video of the scene is all the more disturbing because the men who abused the Mozambican immigrant were uniformed South African police officers and the van was a marked police vehicle.

The graphic scenes of the victim struggling for his life shocked a nation long accustomed to reports of police violence.

“The visuals of the incident are horrific, disturbing and unacceptable. No human being should be treated in that manner,” said South African President Jacob Zuma.

The Daily Sun, a South African newspaper, posted video the footage Thursday and it was quickly picked up by other South African news outlets and carried on the Internet. It sparked immediate outrage about police behavior.

“They are there for safety, but we as a people fear them more,” said Johannesburg resident Alfonso Adams. “You don’t know who to trust anymore.”

Some of those in the crowd who watched the scene unfold in the Daveyton township east of Johannesburg shouted at the police and warned that it was being videotaped. The police did not seem at all concerned by all the witnesses and the presence of cameras as they tied Mido Macia, a 27-year-old from neighboring Mozambique, to the back of a police vehicle, his hands behind his head. At least three policemen participated in the incident. Macia was found dead in a Daveyton police cell late Tuesday.

“We are going to film this,” several onlookers shouted in Zulu as the police tormented Macia. One bystander can be heard on the videotape shouting in Zulu: `’What has this guy done?”

A murder probe is underway on the evidence that Macia suffered head and upper abdomen injuries, including internal bleeding, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, the police watchdog agency, said Thursday. The injuries could be from the dragging and he could also have been beaten later in police custody.

“The allegations are that he was dragged behind a vehicle and his head was bent on the police vehicle. There are also allegations of assault,” said the investigative unit’s spokesman Moses Dlamini.

The video evidence of the abuse renewed concerns about brutality, corruption and other misconduct by a national police force whose reputation has suffered in recent years amid reports that many officers lack training. Some have been charged with committing the crimes they are supposed to prevent, including rape and murder.

“As horrific as it is, it is not exceptional. Hardly a week goes by without such stories of brutality,” said Jacob van Garderen, national director of Lawyers for Human Rights.

At first, Macia, dressed in jeans and a red T-shirt, is dragged along the road by the vehicle at slow speed, the footage shows. He awkwardly tries to keep step even though he is almost horizontal above the ground. Then the van stops, two policemen pick up the legs of the taxi driver and drop them to the ground as the van picks up speed and drives off, beyond the view of the camera.

The police watchdog agency said the incident started just before 7 p.m. on Tuesday when the cab driver was allegedly obstructing traffic with his vehicle. Then Macia allegedly assaulted a constable and took his weapon before he was overpowered, the police investigative unit said.

Macia was found dead in a cell over two hours later by another policeman, according to the watchdog agency.

National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega “strongly condemned” what happened. South Africans are “urged to remain vigilant and continue to report all acts of crime irrespective of who is involved,” said Phiyega in a statement.

Phiyega has tried to upgrade the reputation of the South African police since her appointment last year. Last month, Phiyega told a group of police officials the standing of the force `’has been severely but not irreparably tarnished over the past several years.”

The problems, though, are immense for a police force that has expanded from some 120,000 to almost 200,000 over the last decade, “often failing to match the increase in quantity with sufficient quality,” said Johan Burger, who served for 36 years on the force before becoming a senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies.

Several experts contacted by The Associated Press also said that in recent years there has been an increasing willingness to use a shoot-to-kill approach to the crime and violence.

An average of 860 people a year died in police custody or as a result of police action between 2009 and 2010, up from 695 a year from 2003 to 2008, according to Burger of the security studies institute.

Further staining the reputation of the police is the Marikana shootings when, on Aug. 16, 2012, a line of South African police opened fire on a crowd of striking miners, killing 34 at a platinum mine northwest of Johannesburg. A judicial commission is investigating allegations that many were killed in a rocky hill, near the much-filmed initial scene of the attack, shot in the back as they tried to escape.

  Remember, in past centuries, it was predominantly black Africans capturing blacks to sell to the white slave traders.
  Whites rarely ventured inland to capture black slaves. There was already a culture of black inter tribal warfare with the capturing of hostages for whatever use. The advent of outsiders seeking black slaves just increased the profit motive. It is conceivable that there are more blacks in the USA with ancestors that engaged in the black slave trade than whites.
  Of course warfare and the capturing of hostages/slaves throughout human history is not limited to blacks.

  The flashmobs are here, but the police had nothing to do with the mayhem in Chicago. Once again, Rahm and his cronies held them back. Now, if we IMPORTED these So. African police to patrol Chicago’s south and west sides and left the more civilized law enforcement officers to the more civilized areas of the city, you might see a reduction in the murder rate.

As tragic as this is, I have to guess that this story is getting coverage by the U.S. media simply because the victim is black, however, it is just one isolated incident. Meanwhile, the islamic death-cult is slaughtering hundreds of people (including Americans) a day, all around the world, and we barely hear anything about it.

  Zimmerman was walking back to his own car, when Trayvong ran up behind him, and attacked him.
  
  The MSM has made a hero from a criminal thug who violently attacked the captain of a neighborhood watch.
  
  Since that incident, 12 year old Autumn Pasquale was beat to death by to black teens, so they could steal her BMX bike parts. When the MSM found out that the killers were black, they dropped the story.

  It’s a shame people turn away from the facts. Here are some facts, half of all inner city black pregnancies end in abortion, those that do survive the womb will most likely be in a single parent home. Black males enjoy the highest incarceration rate than any other demographic. Blacks are by far less educated than their counterparts among other demographics. Blacks have higher crime rates including murder and rape and drug crimes. Blacks have higher unemployment rates and utilize social services in % rates much higher than all other demographics. There is a culture among blacks that embraces these facts and resists efforts to correct this by crying racism. So to point out the negative aspects of the black culture are to some defined as racist. Fine, I am racist. The culture is inferior to that of the white European culture. One produces, embraces and celebrates wealth, fine arts, educated professionals, and self reliance….the other produces, embraces and celebrates poverty, abortion, reliance on government, and sadly ignorance. Both cultures have outliers but as a general rule, one strives for excellence and the other for mediocrity. South Africa expelled the culture that strove for excellence and quickly decayed. This is the case in every liberal controlled inner city in the US. Sadly, the blacks that do escape this culture are called names like “Cornball Brother”, “Sellouts” and “Uncle Tom”.   AVENGERK, About ’99 or 2000 I picked up an email friend through a site that dealt with our hobby. He lived just outside of Capetown and expressed the same things. We chatted with each other almost on a daily basis and even did some trading back and forth for model building parts for a few years. He was doing everything that he could to immigrate to Australia and would keep me informed. Suddenly around ’03 or ’04 I stopped hearing from him. No emails, and no answer from my snail mails, but none were returned. Have been very concerned for him ever since.

  RJJING…I had extended family in Cape Town (yes they’re black by the way..although “coloured” is the term they use…I know…YOURSENSEI’s and JZS/MEETEEYORES’s heads are exploding right now because everything their keepers told them about conservatives being racists just went out the window). They will attempt to apply what are considered our “proper ethics” upon the rest of the world. I’ve always quietly laughed when around those who so PC that they would refer to blacks from other nations as African-American.   RJJING..I was educated in Australia so my spelling reflects the closer ties to English spelling. South Africans do the same (regardless of the Dutch influence). Gaol..as opposed to “jail” etc. Although I try to keep it to a minimum because being a U.S. citizen now and living in the U.S. it’s just a lot easier to use American standards.

  AVENGERK, I met a group from the Australian Army while at the 1993 Nijmegen 100 Km March. Being military we had to march in our own groups and could not wonder willy nilly like the civilians. So, I used to meet up with at the end of the day after a shower and change in the huge fest tent. I could drink a beer or two, but they could drink a gallon or more. But then, so could the rest of the European units there. I had just finished a combat life saver course and was able to attend as our medic. I had a blast.   Hi MONK, That gang didn’t get wealthy trying to help anybody much less people in another country. They gained their wealth through intimidation, extortion, and law suits. I was in my last year of Jr High when Dr Martin Luther King was assassinated. We had a part time house keeper who was a wonderful African-American woman who by this time would come to our house after her regular job shortly before my sisters and I would get in from school. Both parents had their careers. We had grown up with her in our home since the ’50s for a couple of years before I even started school. My Dad was transferred elsewhere for a couple of years and when we returned so did Magritte. She was essentially our second mother. We all sat together watching the news reports rather stunned. For the next few days Jesse Jackson went to interviews wearing what he says was a shirt stained heavily with King’s blood. She was steamed with him and even pointed out to us that in the previous news reports after the assassination, Rev Jackson’s shirt was not at all stained. I have been wary of his intentions ever since, and that wariness was planted by a black woman.

  The last few days I have tried a little experiment, I have tried to be nice and open a dialogue with Keatonc333. What I notice is he will only answer posts that people want to be nasty to him, so he can ridicule people back to “Prove” his point we are all neanderthals on this site.   Don’t take my flippancy as being uncaring…it’s gutwrenching to see a human being treated this way. But we’re talking about Africa…a continent facing social disintegration where brutality and cruelty are commonplace. Until Africans wake up and say enough’s enough…no one can help them.

  DARMOK, That’s big hairy, knuckle dragging Neanderthal when you address me! LOL. I’ve long noticed that he just picks somebody else’s post for the most part where he can respond as the snarky a-s-s-h-o-l-e that he is, then moves on to another. While he does attempt to “enlighten” us with his self appointed elitist attitude in sometimes two or three sentences, he is usually a one liner like VERCEORREASON, TROLLMONGER, and some others. Had to leave WANGO out of that. He will do a paragraph at times, then lately about three words followed by his other three favorite words.

  Right, Blacks sold their own people into slavery. The only issue I have with slavery is that the slaves end up integrating into the society once they are freed.
  
  Look at Africa and how different those people are from humane races. They brutalize their own kind, women and children.
  
  They have poisoned America with their way of living. The only reason there are some decent blacks in the US is because our culture also infected theirs.
