Local News Reports Mich. Gov. To Announce ‘State Takeover’ of Detroit — But Story Changes Soon After Posting

Republican Gov. Rick Snyder will reportedly appoint an Emergency Financial Manager (EFM) to takeover Detroit’s finances on Friday, according to a breaking report from ABC affiliate WXYZ:

“[Detroit Mayor Dave] Bing says the governor told him his decision during a phone conversation this morning,” the station reports. “Bing was talking with reporters following a speech before the Detroit Regional Chamber at the MotorCity Casino.”

Detroit has 10 days to appeal the decision to Gov. Snyder.

The governor said last week that he had yet to decide what to do with the troubled city, adding that he’d either appoint an EFM or enter into a new consent agreement with the city.

A state-appointed financial review team found earlier this year that the city’s fiscal woes have indeed reached crisis point. They recommended Gov. Snyder appoint an EFM.

“Detroit has been operating under a consent agreement with the state since last year. That consent agreement prevented the city from being taken over by an emergency manager, who would have been appointed under a state law that was in place at that time,” the report adds.

“Voters overturned that law in November 2012 and the state reverted to an older law that allowed for the appointment of an emergency financial manager,” the report adds.

UPDATE: Soon after WXYZ reported on the governor’s supposed announcement, the story disappeared entirely from its website:

UPDATE II: It appears the report momentarily disappeared from WXYZ’s website because they were tweaking the language of the story a little.

The way things look now, a EFM seems extremely likely, but it’s not a sure thing. This is how the ABC affiliate’s headline reads as of 3:05 p.m. ET: “Governor to announce EFM decision tomorrow; State takeover of Detroit possible.”

“[T]he governor will announce his decision regarding the possible appointment of an Emergency Financial Manager for the city of Detroit on Friday,” reads the updated report.

“Everybody’s got a pretty good idea of what the announcement is going to be,” said Mayor Bing.

The mayor was asked if he thought the governor would appoint an EFM. He answered, “Not immediately.”

We’ll see what happens tomorrow.

  “Devil’s Night” in Detroit “officially” happens every October 30th, the night before Halloween. Unofficially, Devil’s Night is more likely to last for three days, starting on October 29th to Halloween night.
  Unlike Halloween, Devil’s Night gives no “treat”; there’s only “trick.” At best, Devil’s Night activities could amount to standard teenager pranks like egging or toilet-papering a neighbor’s house. At worst, entire inner city residential blocks have gone up in flames that usually originate from one of the many abandoned homes and commercial buildings in this long-decaying rust-belt city.

  ENCINOM, that’s because your Feurer Obama helped screw up Detroit when he took over GM, and the liberal Democratic Party policies with union backing screwed up the entire economy of Detroit through inflated pensions for government employees – pensions that can no longer be paid from taxes because there are not enough people working to pay taxes to pay inflated pensions. Someone has to grab the bull by the horns, cut spending, drastically – something that your Furer Obama will not do at the national level. This entire country will suffer Obammy’s colossal ineptitude and purposeful destructive policies – one of the many things the SOB should be impeached. Treasonous – in his case, yes.

  If memory serves me correctly, Detroit was one of LBJs model cities for liberalism.
  
  I also believe they have had continuous democrat mayors for the last 30 years.
  
  Detroit is also one of those places that has been on the receiving end of welfare in a huge sort of way.
  
  Detroit was put out of the auto industry by the idiot auto unions. These fools benefited themselves right out of a job.
  
  Detroit is one of the cities that competes for the highest murder per capita rate in the US. It is one of those cities where black on black murder rates are through the roof, and where gang murder is around 70% of the total murders. Obama, Feinstein, Hillary, and crowd do not like folks knowing that the blacks are killing themselves at an alarming rate. they are fine with blacks being murdered, and they prefer to try to take rifles from the hands of honest NRA members, knowing that less than 4% of the nation’s murders are committed with a rifle.
  
  Detroit is a microcosm of what liberalism and democrats do to destroy a once vibrant economy.

It’s a third world cesspool of crime, corruption, and incompetence.   their 911 EMERGENCY calls average a 30 minute response time. There are entire sections of the city that they are talking of moving the few people remaining out of so they can turn off the utilities and stop supplying services to. Drive down Van **** and it looks like a bombed out war zone except for the party stores.
  
  It has been governed by democrats for 50 years. Show me what they have done other than drive the city into the salt mines. Detroit either can’t or won’t fix its financial problems so what option is left? A big fence?

  Detroiters voted for and GOT what they voted for. Why is it my responsibility to put their butts out of a mess of their making and that they have been warned about for years? It was just reported that 50% of Detroiters that own property don’t pay their property taxes and Detroit does NOTHING about enforcement.

The city of Detroit has and does elect who they want and if the rest of Michigan was not on the hook for their mis-use of funds then Detroit could be allowed to just rot away. Since Michigan voter/tax money will have to be used, then like the federal government, Michigan government has the right to make the decisions with tax payer money being used to fix the problem. There are hundreds of smaller municipalities acrossed the US with balance sheets like Detroit. A lot of those however can be attributed to one or two bad investment deals…ie. Harrisburg PA.’s incinerator. Situations like that can be worked out easier between the state. Detroits problems are cultural and run much deeper. Not to mention the fact that there is no other city in the state that can compare to Detroit. Detroit dominates Michigan and is draggin the entire state down with it. People living 500 miles away in the U.P. are affected by Detroits fiscal woes. Toledo, Ohio for decades was considered a sister city to Detroit. Whatever Detroit did, Toledo eventually did too. Not anymore. Toledo’s Independant Mayor has really turned things around and now is running a small surplus. Toledo could use more money for grants but as Gov. John Kasuich continues to get the state out of the hole left by Democrats, that will come in time.

Doesn’t Farrakhan want to buy it? Auction it off and rig it (wink, wink) and let Farrahkan buy it. Then all his “other disciples” (those who don’t already live there and already worship him) can live in its crumbling buildings and towers and then Hollywood can make Mad Max X there and then every other post apocalyptic film can be “shot” there and then I am sure the town would be revitalized with all that Hollywood money and then…………..screw it. Transfering operations such as waste disposal and trimming pension funds will come later over time. Everyone!!!!!!!! And I mean everyone involved in governing Detroit is on the take. Detroit’s population was 1,800,000 in 1960 today the population is about 700,000. The race riots of 1965, 1967 and 1968 caused white flight out of Detroit. (Michigan National Guard and tanks in the streets during the riot in 1968). 1,100,000 people moved out of Detroit over the last 45 years. Today Detroit is a city that is 88% African American, 75% of the residents can’t read, over 70,000 dilapidated abandon homes the city is going demolish. Detroit looks like a third world country. The Governor is sending a emergency manager to take over Detroit…………good luck with that.

  All this means is that when the state takes it over then the number of taxpayers that can be fleeced to continue paying the leeches living there increased. While it was a municipality to its self, only those property tax payers in the city limits wound up paying for all the giveaways. Now the whole state will have that honor bestowed on them.   Maybe they could cordon off a section of those 70,000 abandoned homes and buildings and let the sex offenders who can’t live near schools, churches or anywhere near children live there rather than under bridges. Declare it a “No Child” zone and let the men rehabilitate the buildings and work via the internet. Maybe they could do some urban gardening or recycle mattresses or something like that.

  Since 2000, the state of Michigan as lost over 800,000 manufacturing jobs. Starting in 2009, using data from moving companies, Michigan had higher out flows than in flows. It was estimated Michigan population was decreasing by 180,000 people per year. Over the last 10 years Michigan’s population has decreased by 500,000 to 1,000,000 people. Looks like about 1 million makers moved out of Michigan while the takers stayed behind. There a good chance the whole state of Michigan could turn into a Detroit in a few more years. If you live in Michigan, you may want to get out of the state while the getting is good.

  They send an emergency financial manager in to start cutting. it worked in Three Oaks Michigan (white population) it’s been helping some in Benton Harbor Michigan (largely black population) but it was hdouble hockey sticks getting it there but Whirlpool Corp helped out too. OK forgive my ignorance here. Doesn’t detroit already go by state dictates, and laws?

Or are they saying they are just going to raise the bar, and throw even more money at the problem just to make it look like they are actually doing something.

Hey…..I know…… they could raise the taxes even higher, and put even more people out of work, so now the states income goes down further, their spending continues to increase, and they have achieved their utopian society.

Why didn’t someone else think of that….oh wait, that’s the feds game plan.

  Pretty sure it was never ours (Ohio) in the first place.
  
  My suggestion is to burn it down, raze it, bulldoze it all under 20 feet of clay. Plant crops on top, turn it into farmland, and never look back.
  
  And then follow this model on all of the major “big” cities. Prime cesspools of the worst of humanity and the worst that humanity can become.
