Local News Reports Mich. Gov. To Announce ‘State Takeover’ of Detroit — But Story Changes Soon After Posting
Republican Gov. Rick Snyder will reportedly appoint an Emergency Financial Manager (EFM) to takeover Detroit’s finances on Friday, according to a breaking report from ABC affiliate WXYZ:
#BREAKING: #Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says Michigan Governor Snyder will announce a state takeover tomorrow- wxyz.com
— WXYZ Detroit (@wxyzdetroit) February 28, 2013
“[Detroit Mayor Dave] Bing says the governor told him his decision during a phone conversation this morning,” the station reports. “Bing was talking with reporters following a speech before the Detroit Regional Chamber at the MotorCity Casino.”
Detroit has 10 days to appeal the decision to Gov. Snyder.
The governor said last week that he had yet to decide what to do with the troubled city, adding that he’d either appoint an EFM or enter into a new consent agreement with the city.
A state-appointed financial review team found earlier this year that the city’s fiscal woes have indeed reached crisis point. They recommended Gov. Snyder appoint an EFM.
“Detroit has been operating under a consent agreement with the state since last year. That consent agreement prevented the city from being taken over by an emergency manager, who would have been appointed under a state law that was in place at that time,” the report adds.
“Voters overturned that law in November 2012 and the state reverted to an older law that allowed for the appointment of an emergency financial manager,” the report adds.
UPDATE: Soon after WXYZ reported on the governor’s supposed announcement, the story disappeared entirely from its website:
UPDATE II: It appears the report momentarily disappeared from WXYZ’s website because they were tweaking the language of the story a little.
The way things look now, a EFM seems extremely likely, but it’s not a sure thing. This is how the ABC affiliate’s headline reads as of 3:05 p.m. ET: “Governor to announce EFM decision tomorrow; State takeover of Detroit possible.”
“[T]he governor will announce his decision regarding the possible appointment of an Emergency Financial Manager for the city of Detroit on Friday,” reads the updated report.
“Everybody’s got a pretty good idea of what the announcement is going to be,” said Mayor Bing.
The mayor was asked if he thought the governor would appoint an EFM. He answered, “Not immediately.”
We’ll see what happens tomorrow.

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 3:48pmLet see if Chicago is taken over by the state then would not all the local city ordnance an laws go away as they are enforced by the city? That would be very interesting – no more city property tax – no more city parking tickets – no more city building codes – no more city police or fireman – no more city council – no more city gun control ordnances. Maybe this might be a good thing. Then we can add no more crime to the list – well maybe it will go down as the citizens will have the right to arm an protect them selves again. Great now how about adding Detroit to the list. Go for it Governor this has a bunch of + + + + + for it.

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 3:28pmNo, no, no. The only thing that needs to be one is to let all of the ‘Blue States’ become their own left-wing, Communist country, and let the ‘Red States’ remain as what’s been left of the United States of America.
Michigan, California, New York, etc. can all do whatever it is they want to do, and the rest of us can try to regain what our Founding Fathers intended America to be. Give everyone 1 year to relocate to their desired place of resdence, then start building the walls & fences.
And by the way – since D.C. isn’t a state, they have no say in the matter.

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 3:20pmThis move is LONG LONG OVERDUE!!!
Detroit is where I grew up, left at 17, still have family there. I hurt when I see the decay that has envelope that city. I hurt just a little when people use it like a faceless piñata, to be beaten and kicked once more with gusto. Oh, there are still some nice parts, yes there are, and still some hard working people with intact Christian families. But they are surrounded by the dregs and the ghettos, and the Schlubs.
Sometimes I feel as though I come from ATLANTIS,,I come from a city that ceased to exist a long long time ago. There is hope though. With every death, there is opportunity for birth and renewal. Let this be the beginning of Detroit’s ressurcetion, that is my prayer.

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 3:14pmMy son was married last September in Grosse Pointe, MI. This is an upscale city connected to Detroit. To get to the reception we had to drive through Detroit. It reminded me of pictures of bombed cities in Europe in WWII. I recommend never visiting Detroit.

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 3:01pmwouldn’t it be better for the rest of the state of Michigan and America if Detroit was auctioned off or just thrown away and kicked out of the United States? I don’t know if any of you readers every been there but you will see a war zone in America. You will see what Unions, black liberals, democrats and black supremacists have done to a once thriving White city. Lookout Chicago, LA, memphis, and other cities governed by democrats. This is your future.

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 2:47pmDetroit is a cesspool. It is a shining example of what happens when an entire community becomes dependent on the government and there is no change culturally from an entitlement mentality.
I live in Michigan (upstate) and people are starting to flee the city and come up here. Resources are limited so crime is going up.
I am still not sure how I feel about the state government stepping in to “takeover” a city. It seems a little Orwellian to me, but at the same time, what is going to happen to these people? Ideas kicked around have included reclaiming the urban areas as farmland….just…wow.

I feel for you, outside of Detroit and Flint, Michigan is a wonderful, beautiful state full of wonderful people. Y’all are armed, keep that in mind if crime starts rising because the rats are fleeing their ships.

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 2:33pmYou do realize the taxpayers (people that actually pay taxes) will end up having to pay the people of detroit (people that didn’t pay taxes) for the property the state decides to “take over”. How stupid is that? Nevermind I forget we are living in the time of free unicorns for everyone.

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 2:41pmIt’s an Emergency Manager not a “take-over” of the property.
Hellsbells, The State of MI offered to buy a park called Belle Isle. It’s in ruins. The state offered to take it, fix it up and give it back in 30 years, all fresh. Detroit said no.

Years later Mayor Kwamee Kilpatrick was another POS criminal mayor who just got out of prison as well. Burn the city to the ground and don’t allow progressives to control government, but no they’ll keep the progs in there that’s all they know is raising taxes.

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 2:52pmWhat has happened in Detroit is a combination of cultural failure and people led to the trough of the Progressive Agenda. A community cannot prosper without people willing to work and do the right thing by their families. What used to be a hard-working, hard nosed town that actually built things, has been laid in ruins by greedy unions and lazy people.
