First there was the cyclist being run over by an antelope. Then there was the motorcyclist who had a deer jump right into his face. Of course a skateboarder-deer collision had to follow. And now — you must get the idea where this is going — a mountain biker, mid-race, was slammed into by one such renegade animal.
Jeff Plassman was pumping through the 2013 Monster Cross and Mountain Bike race Sunday in Virginia’s Pocahontas State Park when a deer decided the gap between him and the rest of the pack was its opportune moment to leap.

Here…it…comes… (Image: YouTube screenshots)
Knocked off his bike, other cyclists give him a few shout-outs to see if he was alright and he gets quite a few looks. Plassman just picks up his bike and in a comment says he told fellow riders he was “fine.”

Knocked over onto the side of the trail. (Image: YouTube screenshot)
Plassman’s helmet cam captured the whole ordeal:
According to WWBT, Plassman wrote that a few spokes on the bike’s wheel broke and he was “busted up a little bit,” but he noted that he has seen worse before.
Let this be yet another warning to those riding on two or four wheels.

Mar. 1, 2013 at 11:25amWhat a great bunch of guys. Every bike rider just kept peddling on by. Not even an ‘Are you OK?’.

Mar. 1, 2013 at 11:19amI don’t understand the title. The deer did not “run over” or attack the cyclist. It would appear the deer was scared out of its little mind and COLLIDED with a cyclist. Does the Blaze need to sensationalize a silly story like this? I thought the Blaze was supposed to be different than the liberal media?

Mar. 1, 2013 at 2:33amI’m just guessing the rider died. Must have since this says it was captured on the helmet cam and clearly the rider is separated from the camera at the impact and then you see the rider walk over (still with a helmet on) and pick up the bike which seems to raise up the camera, so I’m guessing it was a tandem bike and the other rider lost his head in the spokes or something. Gruesome. Or….maybe it wasn’t a helmet cam. Naw, the editors would have caught that.

Feb. 28, 2013 at 6:53pmWow! Did you see how many fellow bikers stopped to make sure he was all right and offer assistance? Me neither. In fact, it seemed none of them even glanced over at him. Now that’s the kind of sport I want to be involved in (sarcasm).

Feb. 28, 2013 at 6:08pmBetter move the “Deer Crossing” signs to a location with less humans. Very inconsiderate of the people who put up the signs.

by.

Feb. 28, 2013 at 11:56amIncidents like this wouldn’t happen if bike trails had federally mandated deer crossings with approved warning lights. It’s way past time to start a national conversation about this.

Thanks, I missed that. Didn’t even bother to look because how slow they were going. I’ve been in a lot of bike races and they looked like they were on a joy ride. LOL
Thanks again. : )

Feb. 28, 2013 at 10:32amNot quite. Mountain bikers wear helmet cams all the time. Sometimes they catch things like this, but often they wear them to either capture the flow of the trail or record themselves as they go over obstacles (either natural or manmade) that are part of the trail. It’s pretty common.
I noticed that the bikers both in front and behind him didn’t stop, but that’s likely because a.) he wasn’t hurt and his bike at first glance looked fine and b.) they were in the middle of a race (probably near the beginning of it, judging by how the bikers were still clustered together). I draw the race conclusion because everyone had a numbered placard attached to the front of their bike.

Feb. 28, 2013 at 10:34amThat’s because they were in the middle of a race (the numbered placards give that away) and he and his bike were at first glance ok. Nothing wrong with that.
If there’d been actual harm, someone would have come to his aid, even in the middle of the race. By and large the mountain bike community is comprised of good folks that put safety and their fellow-riders ahead of pretty much anything else.

Feb. 28, 2013 at 10:37amSerial cyclists can be a bit elitist. Another great reason to keep a zippy of roofing nails on hand at all times when on the road.
