‘You Will Regret…’:The Full ‘Threat’ Email a Top White House Official Sent Bob Woodward

Veteran Washington journalist Bob Woodward rocked the political and media world Wednesday after he claimed that a senior White House official threatened him over his reporting that President Barack Obama was actually behind the imminent forced federal budget cuts known as sequestration.

Woodward told Politico the exchange occurred in an email after the aide, later reported to be economic adviser Gene Sperling, “yelled at [him] for a half-hour.” The line in question: “You’re focusing on a few specific trees that give a very wrong impression of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here. … I think you will regret staking out that claim.”

Woodward “repeated the last sentence, making clear he saw it as a veiled threat. “ ‘You’ll regret.’ Come on,” he said. “I think if Obama himself saw the way they’re dealing with some of this, he would say, ‘Whoa, we don’t tell any reporter ‘you’re going to regret challenging us.’”

Politico published the email exchange between Sperling and Woodward in full Thursday morning:

Bob:

I apologize for raising my voice in our conversation today. My bad. I do understand your problems with a couple of our statements in the fall — but feel on the other hand that you focus on a few specific trees that gives a very wrong perception of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here.

But I do truly believe you should rethink your comment about saying saying that Potus asking for revenues is moving the goal post. I know you may not believe this, but as a friend, I think you will regret staking out that claim. The idea that the sequester was to force both sides to go back to try at a big or grand barain with a mix of entitlements and revenues (even if there were serious disagreements on composition) was part of the DNA of the thing from the start. It was an accepted part of the understanding — from the start. Really. It was assumed by the Rs on the Supercommittee that came right after: it was assumed in the November-December 2012 negotiations. There may have been big disagreements over rates and ratios — but that it was supposed to be replaced by entitlements and revenues of some form is not controversial. (Indeed, the discretionary savings amount from the Boehner-Obama negotiations were locked in in BCA: the sequester was just designed to force all back to table on entitlements and revenues.)

I agree there are more than one side to our first disagreement, but again think this latter issue is diffferent. Not out to argue and argue on this latter point. Just my sincere advice. Your call obviously.

My apologies again for raising my voice on the call with you. Feel bad about that and truly apologize.

The White House has denied threatening Woodward, telling Politico, “Of course no threat was intended. As Mr. Woodward noted, the email from the aide was sent to apologize for voices being raised in their previous conversation. The note suggested that Mr. Woodward would regret the observation.”

  Sperling’s email is very awkwardly worded and clearly it’s contrived. He seems to be trying to do some damage control for the bad meeting he had with Woodward. But Sperling couldn’t help throwing in the veiled threat anyway.
  Woodward has some friends in the media (while others in the media are openly and gleefully supplicating themselves to Obama) so if the white house shuts him out or escalates the retaliatory actions against him…Obama may find a few media minions not so cooperative..and perhaps even willing to get into some investigations on his administration. The worm may have indeed turned.
  
  But Obama seems to be made of teflon, nothing so far has been able to stick to him..primarily because the media won’t do it’s job. He’s got a cocoon of protectors around him that are obsessive about controlling the message but a good journalist that’s cheesed off about how Woodward is being treated could tear open that cocoon. All it takes is one.

Now, the people he has championed all of his adult life have turned on him for telling the truth.   I can almost see the crest of the Obama Tsunami, just over the horizon. A little voice, keeps nagging my brain and telling me more than just a progressive agenda is responsible for the quake that gave rise to Obama’s Tsunami. A collective effort, from all political factions and media institutions, are becoming more clarified. The few of US, to be trusted seem to be dwindling in numbers. Lots of talk, and so little action.   Threatening people is what Democrat aides do for a living. That is how they keep everyone in line. It is done all the time. “You will live to regret it.” is only a slap on the cheek. How about “I’ll track you down and get you”. People in Chicago often turn up dead after being threatened by Dems. Where was Obama from? Woodward is scared they will hurt his reputation.

  You should be embarrassed to have even insinuated that what Sperling wrote was some sort of threat. (I know. You never actually called it a threat. But you also said nothing to dispel the frenzy you were helping to create around what was written.

I visited the Texas State Museum in Austin shortly after it opened. It was interesting to see the inscription at the entrance to the effect of “It isn’t bragging if it’s true.” The same might be said of the statement to Carl Woodward that he would regret staking out his claim. It isn’t a threat if it’s true?

If this is an accurate reproduction of the e-mail it shows how little respect “Gene” has for the office of POTUS. It should always be in “caps” regardless of who the POTUS is. Especially the P and the US.

And then the WH’s “explanation” is a lie, of course. They said it was an apology for voices (plural) being raised. It was not. There was an apology for this guy’s voice being raised only.

It’s very clear from tone and context that Sperling means that Woodward’s reputation as a journalist will suffer. Of course, if Woodward dies from a slip and fall in his home when he is 99 years old, you all will say he was killed by Obama’s minions anyway.

  I have read a number of your posts here. I am not sure if you get paid by the word or by the post, however, the bottom line is that your employeer (Obama) creates a problem, then says it was someone else. Then Obama campaigns against that problem with the intent to create a larger government / media loyal to him. Obama’s problem with Woodward is that Woodward has street cred to talk truth to power and in this case showed the Obama who voted for it before he voted against it(sequestration). This is not to be tolerated since others might now start to look at all the past problems that Obama created and said had to be fixed today because tommorrow will be too late.

  Sorry. I’m not buying any of this. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to find out that Woodward and Sperling cooked this up to deflect our attention away from the fact that the emperor is now downplaying how long it will take for the world to fall apart as laid out in his speech last week.
  
  Woodward is just the foil VJ and Axelrod needed. Credible with the “old crowd”, but absolutely harmless to the “young-uns”.
  
  Who would you rather smear – Rachel Madcow or Bob Woodward??

Typical Obama tactic: the aide yelled at Woodward for half-hour ( no witnesses / no proof ) but then sends a long, involved email which contains a veiled threat but which is convoluted and open to various interpretations. The Chicago radicals are skilled at intimidation. We have been watching their Media Character Assassination Squad ever since Obama appeared on the political scene – that is part of their ” culture.” The Chicago radicals are a political combination of Bernie Madoff phony economic deals , the Race Card, and Al Capone Media enforcers. A very bad combination for America.

  Ridiculous. I’m tempted to ask, a la Hillary, “At this point, what does it matter whose idea the sequester was?” If it was a Republican idea, they proposed it because they thought that by 2013 Obama would no longer be president. If it was Obama’s idea, it was a desperate effort to avoid debt default with some measure, any measure, that the obstreperous House Republicans would agree to. Whether Woodward is right or wrong won’t even be a story any more in a few weeks. You will have moved on to something else, so enjoy this while you can.
