One of the Nation’s Largest Gun Manufacturers Threatens to Leave Maryland Over Proposed Gun Control Bill

Doug Bigelow, of Hagerstown, Md., expresses his support for the right to bear arms on Friday, March 1, 2013 in Annapolis, where a gun-control measure that would ban assault weapons had a hearing. As a gun-control measure aims to ban assault weapons in Maryland, neighboring states are trying to woo away a Beretta factory, whose employees would be unable to buy some of its products. Credit: AP
One of the biggest firearms manufacturers in the U.S. announced it may leave Maryland over a proposed gun control bill currently being considered by lawmakers.
Testifying before the Maryland House Judiciary Committee on Friday, Beretta, USA general counsel Jeffrey Reh argued Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley’s “Firearm Safety Act of 2013″ is “tantamount to a legislative effort to ban certain books.”
“That might seem like a provocative statement but the parallels are apt,” he added, according to testimony reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon.
He went on: “The possession and use of firearms and printed materials are both protected by the Constitution. Both rights come from the only legislation in U.S. history that was voted on and approved directly by the citizens of our country.”
“One might suggest that books do not kill and that the current legislation is sought for beneficial reasons,” Reh explained. “In fact, the misuse of books—say, the Bible or the Koran—have led to tragedy, and efforts to ban certain books—for example, Huckleberry Finn—have also come from allegedly ‘beneficial’ intent.”
The gun control bill in question passed the Maryland Senate on Thursday night. It was passed along to the House of Delegates on Friday.
According to reports, O’Malley’s bill would ban semi-automatic rifles (so-called “assault rifles”), high-capacity magazines and any guns with two or more “military-like” features. The Free Beacon reports that Beretta is preparing to manufacture a new civilian version of a rifle that would be considered illegal under the gun control legislation.
Reh called the bill “misguided” and argued that any person “bent on destruction will find a way to do so.”
“The absence of a folding stock on a rifle or the need to carry an additional magazine will not stop such a person,” he said.
Meanwhile, O’Malley claims his bill is “supported by overwhelming numbers of Marylanders.”
Watch Reh discuss the issue with NRA News’ Cam Edwards:
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Posted on March 1, 2013 at 10:46pmWouldnt the prudent thing to do is support Berretta in MD?
That is, they have a right to be there, moving is kind of like losing….
I say stand up fight, louder, get states and other gun makers on board, raise a voice of disdain for legislating bodies that rape good people and companies-
Moving is way too easy and doesn’t really solve anything-

Sure, staying to stand and fight would be the prudent thing to do…. before the bill gets past. But, after when the politicians ignore the people and start believing they can govern us on anything they want and forgetting that they work for us, the people and businesses have to take care of themselves then.
I think these politicians will learn a hard lesson when businesses and a lot of people (myself included) will start moving out of the state. Maryland will lose possibly millions in taxes. Liberals, Democrats and progressives just can`t do anything right.

Posted on March 2, 2013 at 9:46am-cant disagree with all the come backs-
I’m just thinking that Beretta one of the oldest gun makers in the world, (I think 1500′s) is under attack from many fronts here in the US, and the plan is to ‘embarrass’ this co. with massive regulations that are simply meant to strangle.
If MD can get away with their devious plans with such a name brand, it doesnt bode well for the little guys- I know moving would be a solution, what happens when ‘new’ regulations attack again and again? MD is an awesome state, with natural forests and resources that are off the charts- Berretta did choose a great state- I guess you fight until there is no fight left, but moving should be the last option
thanks for all the input, all good stuff

Posted on March 2, 2013 at 12:51pmWould you nor’easters writing for the Blaze please get your heads out of your @&^#*&$^# when referencing weapons we have the right to carry that Diane Frankenstein has brainwashed the media and most of the general population to call them scray assault weapons?
They are simply rifles with a pistol grip and/or a flash suppressor that helps keep you on target when hunting or exercising judicious marksmanship and/or a recoil buffer so it doesn’t knock a smaller shooter to the ground like Crazy Joe’s wife would be while letting loose 2 shots in the air from a double barrel 12 gauge with 0/0 buck. Joe is so frail it would probably break him in half to do it. Let’s not forget the danger of the projectiles that were indiscriminantly launched into the air and would come down and possibly hit someone with the almost the same impact force (kinect energy discharged minus the decrease in velocity due to friction in the air) … in other words, it would be as if you aimed at someone and shot directly at them if your launching bullets in the air came down and actually hit someone.
The SEMI AUTOMATIC ban on any gun (weapon for prior service) would disqualify 90%+ of currently owned rifles and pistols. One shot per pull of the trigger. Because it is a SEMI AUTOMATIC you even here at the Blaze seem to think that anything designated a SEMI AUTOMATIC is therefore an ASSAULT WEAPON (GAG< PUKE< YUCK). There is no such thing as an assault weapon. View Ted Cruz questioning La Pierre.

Posted on March 2, 2013 at 1:03pmAlso, you Frankenzombie liberal communogressives believe that you can implement mass death panels with an unarmed populace such as was done in Poland by the Russians and in Germany by the Nazis who ironically found the mass graves in Poland where Stalin had all of the Polish military officers executed and buried in mass graves after disarming them and bringing them in to a meeting.
You people who claim to be socialists and communists either really are that evil or you have no clue what history really shows about any country who has adopted Marxisms. 10% of the population must be culled every 10 years almost like clockwork and eventually it goes broke because it runs out of other people’s money. Even Pravda is telling us “please, Americans, do not let your politicians take your guns”. Switzerland requires that every citizen of age owns a fully automatic weapon. Hmm, wonder why our politicians and media cannot figure these out such as the cities who adopted policies that make it illegal for a home owner in city limits to own that home without owning a firearm, such as Kennesaw, GA, and how little home invasion problems there have been since it was adopted years ago.
These politicians are gladly leading you sheep into a world of the caste system where they are the elites in charge when martial law is declared making them supreme leaders and the cult royalty of this insane Obozo fascination whose goals are inscribed on the “Georgia Guidestones” likely by Ted Turner.

We do hope Audette (reverend? gag) votes with her feet. We welcome freedom and those who would preserve it. Unfortunately, there is Jackson Hole and the problem of Laramie since HBO chose to do an expose on the killing of Matthew Shephard and cuase a flooding of liberal hero wannabes to flood that area and severly diminish but not conquer the conservative and libertarian voting population there. Jackson has always been just plain strange since Clint Eastwood put it on the map in the Any Which Way movies. A lot of America hating Nature worshipping tree huggers flock to the ski resorts and try to change who the locals are rather than be accepting of diversity. Same old story we see everywhere. Signs here in the state and county offices saying “You are in Wyoming where we don’t care how you did it where you came from” and with no state income tax, I can take that even having moved here from a pretty conservative southern state. Virginia is not historically known to be filled with a bunch of liberal nutjobs like the so called reverend, either. She would be much more at home in Cali. She and her homemaker husband should go set up a ministry there because surely she must think she is on a mission to bring her gospel to people here who know what kind of message she is trying to bring before she even opens her mouth. WY is welcoming to anyone who is not trying to come here and change a history that has been bought with the blood and sweat of its grandparents.

Posted on March 2, 2013 at 2:34pmI agree because the choice to move not only makes news but will also call for ‘action’ not just silent anger from the people employed by Beretta. People get pissed all the time, but when it comes down to the loss of their livelihood, they will ACT and action is what is needed. This isn’t some weak and ineffective sanction like some gun companies who now just refuse to sell to police, this is straight up hitting them where it hurts. It sends a message: WE WILL NOT BE HELD HOSTAGE AND WE DO NOT NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS.
Great job Beretta!!!

The gun business is a struggle in any state- you are right, the crippling effect a non-friendly state has its pitfalls; maybe p r i n c i p l e is the word for the day. There are things greater than revenue, and I would love to see Berretta not cave one iota, but where are the other states, where is their voice of support? Where is the cavalry? They seem to be the lone ranger.
I cant disagree with all the excellent points made here, yes MD would suffer, but who would suffer more if Berretta left? They chose that state for many reasons, and I say ‘up the fight.’ But again, I hope they do whats best for them, and it may be moving.

Sure, we have some brain dead libs (a story on one here in Cheyenne also on Blaze today), we have our share of illegals and we have wind. But we still have common sense and the United States of America -USA – here. NOT the United States Socialist Republic – USSR.
I and I know many others who would be happy to work with a great manufacturer here. And more diversity to our local economy is always a welcome thing.
I think as the years of King Bracko’s reign of terror continue, even after he’s (hopefully) gone, the strong, free states will struggle but be mostly ok. While the deep blue states will sink further and further into chaos and destruction and failure. And those of us in the states with a brain aren’t bailing you morons out. Labor is also a big factor, but a state that has a wishy washy history could “kill” your business a lot faster than any employee could.

Thats one amendment Cuomo is considering here for NY’s SAFE Act (not) Law. I feel safer now! I’m sure they’ll also exempt law enforcement too. But who knows? NY passed their bill in the middle of the night without any debate and forgot to exempt them because they were in such a hurry to ram this bill through. Reminds me of Pelosi…”Ah, we have to pass the bill so we ah, can see what’s in it”! When the 2nd Amendment falls, the rest will soon follow… Hang on gang
