Which Claim from Obama’s Friday Press Conference Was Rated ‘Incorrect’ by WaPo?

Obama Janitor Claim Rated False by Washington Post

WASHINGTON, DC – MARCH 01: U.S. President Barack Obama speaks to the media after meeting with Congressional leaders at the White House, March 1, 2013 in Washington, DC. Getty Images

This week, the story about the planned cuts to future government spending (“sequester”) has been the way Democrats and the administration have been overstating their effects (see Maxine Waters). And now, the Washington Post’s fact-checker has caught the president doing it as recently as his Friday afternoon press conference.

“Obama’s remarks continue the administration’s pattern of overstating the potential impact of the sequester, which we have explored this week,” the Post concluded. So what earned Obama that determination? Well, how about him claiming that the sequester would lead to pay cuts for Capitol Hill janitors.

“Starting tomorrow everybody here,” Obama said, “all the folks who are cleaning the floors at the Capitol — now that Congress has left, somebody’s going to be vacuuming and cleaning those floors and throwing out the garbage — they’re going to have less pay. The janitors, the security guards, they just got a pay cut, and they’ve got to figure out how to manage that. That’s real.” [Emphasis added]

Turns out, it’s not.

According to the government guru in charge of the Capitol janitors, the Architect of the Capitol, “We do not anticipate furloughs for AOC employees as a result of Sequestration.”

And there’s even a fancy document:

Obama Janitor Claim Rated False by Washington Post

Letter from the Architect of the Capitol (via: WaPo)

The White House did respond to WaPo’s fact-checking by claiming the sequester does mean a reduction in overtime. But the outlet isn’t buying it:

A White House official notes that the memo does refer to “further reducing overtime.” Technically, that could mean some janitors might see less pay, but it’s unclear how many actually earn overtime. Under the reasonable person test, a possible reduction in overtime appears a bit different than “just got a pay cut.”

To be fair, it does appear the Capitil police will undergo actual cuts.

I love this, Keaton is back Arguing that Obama did,nt lie about the pay cut! I agree, The prez, never lies he distorts, spins, misspeaks, omits, embellishes…but never lies….. Get a Life Keaton!…Oh by the way Ben–Franklin you are correct! I submit that if Obama was caught on camera munching on a human thigh bone those same people you refer to would run cover for him even then saying things like”Well he was really hungry” or the Repubs made him do it by not agreeing to tax hikes or, my favorite, George Bush did it too

Well, well, well, funny how just yesterday here in Memphis school custodians were also the “victims” of cuts. Are the custodians going to be like the sanitation workers whose strike caused riots in Memphis in the 1960′s? Is it just a “coincidence” that this happened here yesterday and Obama talks about custodians today?

Those janitors don’t need a pay cut, they need to be fired!!! Are they not responsible for taking out the garbage??? And they have had how many days to throw it out??? Yet, those same nose-picking congressional pieces of trash keep showing up day after day…If I don’t do my job, I get run off…Hale, they are worse than weathermen, I thought they were the only folks who could be wrong hal the time and still keep a job…Now, I have to pay for janitors who cannot even take out the trash…I knew it was hard to get good help these days, but sheesh, this is totally out of control…

The problem is that the MSM will repeat it without verifying. The story will not be that janitors will see reduced overtime, it will be that janitors are getting a pay cut… because that sounds worse… and is less truthful… and supports dear leaders agenda.

    Keaton,

Seriously, you sound like a whiny, hypersensitive little girl by repeating the same drivel over and over again as if that makes it true. Can you not shrill somewhere else? What an irritant you’ve proven yourself to be. Like a speck of sand in one’s underwear: irritating enough to announce it’s presence, not significant enough to do more than an itch one’s ball sack. Come back when you have something useful to say, and the actual brains to back it up.

If would be so kind, please explain to me how a person who regularly works 40 hours a week and then a few hours overtime, will not be taking a pay cut by no longer getting those over time hours.

Overtime isn’t “regular” moron. That’s why it’s OVER time: it’s OVER the time you a regularly scheduled to work, hence why they pay you MORE than your regular wages. If over time is reduced, that isn’t a pay cut except in the broadest, most abstract (and thus meaningless and impractical) sense. (i.e. I was making x, now I am maxing x-y, with x-y being what I would have made anyways if overtime were not offered). Sensible, REASONABLE people (I know that I am technically disqualifying you but bear with me) don’t rely on overtime, they rely on the REGULAR wages that they earn working a REGULAR 40 hour work week. You are harping at straws, but then what should I expect from a paid nuisance?

Nice try grasping at straws like the desperate little toady you are. Why don’t you come back after your masters have given you a better one?

      Sincerely,

      A DEMONSTRABLY superior intelligence.

Ok. I’m not sure how you are not getting this.. the definition of a “pay cut” is “the act of reducing ones income.” Now if these janitors normally brings in X dollars, but will bring in Y dollars after sequestration. How is that not by definition a pay cut? incase you have more trouble figuring this out, heres a clue! X>Y

Keaton you can hang around and be a spin monkey all you want but you are only looking the fool. A reduction in overtime is not a pay cut. Sorry to burst your line of logic but a pay cut is when a Janitor is making $15.00 per hour and his boss comes and says starting Monday you will only be making $14.50 per hour. That is a pay cut. Nothing I would expect you to understand – you want to protect this President so bad that your own dignity is lost – I screams you are on the dole.

The white house already admitted themselves that there will be no paycuts, Only a reduction in overtime hours which they can’t, and won’t, validate with any numbers. They put it out there, people like JROOK fully buy into it, and then they take it back and/or make corrections. By the time they make corrections It dosn’t matter because the wrong information is already in their talking points and it lives on to be spewed in losing arguements.

Not if overtime pay dosn’t normally occour. How much overtime should the cleaning staff have to put in to do their regular jobs. Is their a spike in demand our increased output that they have to adjust to? They don’t produce anything and we pay them a more than fair wage for their service. Government workers sandbag durring regular hours and then require overtime to complete their service and therefore artifically boost their salaries art our expense. Overtime should be like Hillary’s abortion stance” rare” and therefore not a published cost cut for the WH to spew

BTW, why is is that when he talks about all of these “pay cuts” to the workers, why is it that the bureaucrats in charge aren’t hit with them? If the regime hates “the rich” so much, why not cut the 6-figure incomes of the cronies running the joint? You know, the ones submitting the bloated budgets with all of the wasteful spending. Why aren’t THEY being threatened with a slash to their salaries? Why does dear leader insist on sticking it to those middle class folks who can least afford it? Isn’t he supposed to be all for the little guy? Hmmm…..

Yes it is politically incorrect to ask low information voters, is President Obama the victim of racism by Sen. Harry Reid not passing a budget? The general public will say this is nothing to do with racism, Harry Reid does not rely on the color of his skin to pass a budget, its the content of his character that guides him and refuses to pass a budget that allowed sequestration to happen?

Don’t worry President Obama, we won’t let Harry Reid’s content of character, distract us from what you are doing? And we won’t let low information voters think this is about white men’s need in greed, this is about the character content of the Senate?

What else do you call refusing to vote on the repeal of Obama care? Negligence, like storing radioactive containers on the surface of the planet, knowing full well what we know about outer space? Knowing full well we want to explore space? Knowing full well the USDA is headed by the same guy that approved GMO’s, instead of making sure consumers have a choice?

Getting your 40 hours per week is not a cut in pay. I will be cut 8 hours a week, down to 32 hours a week. That is a cut in pay, about $7,800 a year. So Keatonc, if you want to talk about cuts in pay, there you go, but I aint a janitor or anything like that, I Manage a mulit-million dollar satellite system, so I guess I aint as important as a janitor. Well, I’ve never been a janitor, but have known some. Usually, overtime is unscheduled. You may get zero, or you may get many more than one wants. At any rate, my bet is the janitors are not government employees, but are contract workers, meaning if the govt busts their contract, the govt can be sued for breach of contract. If that’s the case, the govt is obligated to pay the contractor, and the janitors are not in the least bit affected.
