Three stars from the ABC comedy “Modern Family” got stuck in a Kansas City elevator for about an hour Friday night, delaying their appearance at a charity benefit and causing a stir on social media.

“Get us out!” the award-winning cast said one after another in a humorous video they recorded and posted on the Internet.

Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet were in town for a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City, where Stonestreet grew up.

The Kansas City Star reports that the three were trapped with about a dozen other people at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center, where they were headlining the fundraiser.

Many thought it was a joke when the emcee announced there would be a delay in the program because the stars were stuck in an elevator.

About 15 minutes later they knew it wasn’t a joke. The band played and many in the well-dressed crowd went to the bar. People were tweeting and taking pictures of the Fire Department. About a third of the crowd left before the actors got on stage.

Crews from the Kansas City Fire Department freed the group at about 10 p.m., an hour after they were scheduled to appear. The actors praised the efforts (and physique) of the firemen:

Thirty-some years ago I got stuck in the same elevator not once but twice within a few days. I pushed the door open and dropped to the floor below. I notified Security and that was the end of it. Life was so much simpler back then.

  I like the Blaze, but it does seem to need a knowledgeable editor. Of course, having lived in Kansas for many years, my first thought was that they were stuck in a grain elevator.

  Keaton, they corrected it. The first story said “Kansas”, not “Kansas City”.
  
  And I checked, and this is the same hotel. From Wikipedia:
  
  “The hotel opened on July 1, 1980 as the Hyatt Regency Kansas City and was Missouri’s tallest building from 1980 to 1986. It is now the state’s sixth tallest building and is Kansas City’s third tallest building.
  In 1987, the hotel was renamed Hyatt Regency Crown Center. It was again renamed the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center on December 1, 2011.”

A tip for anyone who finds themselves in this situation – try pulling the doors open by hand. Sometimes it works; you won’t know until you try. If you’re halfway between floors, you may still be stuck because you can’t reach the lever to open the shaft doors, but often the car is just a couple of inches out of position from a proper stop.
