10 Surprising Celebrity Endorsements for ‘The Bible’ — The Epic TV Series Premiering Tonight

“The Bible,” a new series that will premiere on the History Channel Sunday night (9 p.m. ET), continues to gain the attention of Christians and non-Christians alike. But one of the most fascinating elements about it — a five-week program that will expose viewers to 10 hours of Biblical reenactments (two hours each Sunday) — are the celebrity endorsements it has received.

From singer Christina Aguilera to “Glee” star Jane Lynch, Hollywood Twitter accounts are abuzz with messages about “The Bible,” a project that was created and produced by famed reality show producer Mark Burnett and his wife, actress Roma Downey (see the duo discuss the project on TheBlaze TV last week).

On the one hand, these endorsements are surprising. After all, this is Hollywood — an industry stereotypically uninterested in matters of faith. But on the other, Burnett and Downey are power players who have a plethora of friends and contacts in the industry. These individuals respect their work and are likely supporting “The Bible” as a result.

Regardless of the reasoning, it’s worth noting who’s helping to spread the word. Here are 10 of the most surprising names and Twitter messages:

Thats exactly what it will be about. They will have so called “experts” on the Bible. How can you be a expert if you do not have Christ? The answer to that is, you can’t. Ill follow after those that have actually preached and followeed the Word of God. Like Billy Graham. Not some liberal nut who reads the Bible out of context. I might tune in for a second to see how many lies that tell, but I can’t promise Ill watch the whole thing. I can only handle so many lies. Its bad enough getting constant lies from the White House.

If you care what adults, who pretend to be other people for a living, opinion’s are of your belief system…you are beyond hope. If they agree, disagree SO WHAT?. You need Hollywood to validate your religious convictions? Why do some of us, the Blaze in this case, give this any import? Let’s get Tom Cruse’s opinion on counseling for your bi-polar daughter !…sure why not..he’s rich and famous..his opinion MUST be important…the more importance you give these people..the more they have…enjoy the show, the pretty gals..laugh if it’s funny but it’s no more important than the popcorn you eat while watching it…obsess on the popcorn if you must.

Glenn you better look into this abomination ASAP. How in the world can there be a mini-series about God’s word without even a mention of Mormonism? Maybe Glenn’s company could put out their own mini-series on the book of Mormon. Mitt could play Jesus and Glenn could play Joseph Smith.

“this is Hollywood — an industry stereotypically uninterested in matters of faith.” I don’t think this is very accurate.. There are tons of movies with religious sentiments! at least every year a few come out.
theres Crash, Passion of the Christ, Doubt, Life of Pi, Gates of Heaven, Vanilla Sky, Waking Life, A.I., Ghost in the Shell, Gattaca, Brothers Keeper, Phenomenon, Signs, Devil, (actually most M. Night Shyamalan movies) Dogma, The Priest, Last Temptation of Christ, Stigmata, the Da Vinci code, City of Angels,The Matrix, Jesus Christ Super Star, Star Wars, The Book of Eli, Children of Men, and literally hundreds more.. All these movies depict faith, some positive, some negative, some just questioning. Religion is an incredibly interesting topic that leaves a huge footprint on society. To say hollywood is uninterested in these matters is ridiculous! They are very interested! don’t believe me? Go to block buster!

      @KEATON

Add “The Matrix” to that list, It’s an Easter movie. It even came out on Good Friday.

      Watch it again.

Much of it is symbolic. For instance room 303, right before Neo is crucified and comes back to life (through the breadth of the Trinity no less) is a symbolic nod to 3 days and 3 nights.

It even ends with the savior ascending into heaven.

The movie has Judas, John the Baptist, and yes even Jesus.

If you never knew The Matrix was a Christian movie watch it again, it’ll blow your mind. It’s like the story of Jesus told into the times of today; like what was done with Romeo and Juliet.

Note: I am in no way referring to the sequels, just the first one.

I’m betting they’ll be as liberal with the Bible as they can and do whatever they can to skew it to their agenda. I’ll try watching it, just so I’m not forming my opinion on an assumption, but with endorsements from “GLEE” actors, I can bet how this show is going to be portrayed.

Yeah, durn liberals. I want to hear the part where Jesus says the job of a country is to help the rich and that it’s a crime against God to for a country to help their own poor.

I that the Lord sayeth, “There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.” Deuteronomy 15:11

But when He said “I command you” what he really meant was that it was, you know, voluntary.

The Bible is clear: a country as a whole should support the rich and cut their taxes. The good Lord was clear on that. Jesus also thought, although didn’t say outright, that poor people were “takers” and “moochers” and “lazy,” just as Ayn Rand did, and just as you do. Jesus, although poor himself, was all about letting the poor suffer the consequences of being lazy bums. He thought that if a individual wanted to give to them, fine, but he wasn’t about to command them to do so, despite Deuteronomy 15:11.

To Kevin Tampa. Matrix is so not Christian. Did Zion look like heaven, an orgy rave in the depths of the earth??? Please look into the Wachowskis (formerly brothers, now one of them thinks he is a woman). This is a crazy neo Gnostic assault on Christianity that goes so deep it will blow your mind. Combined with V for Vendetta, another Wachowski movie, it’s not debatable. Please please consider this before telling anyone else Matrix is a Christian movie.

that is a real interesting statement. that only the those who have ‘actually preached and followed the word of God’ can be an ‘expert’ on a tradition. christian blazers seem to consider themselves experts on judaism, islam, buddhism, native american religious traditions and a whole host of other organized religious phenomena. if we follow your own logic then only someone who actually preached and followed the word of the Qur’an is an acceptable source of information concerning Islam. are you comfortable with your own logic being applied to other faith-based religious traditions?

You are leaving out the most important Jewish tenet: free will. If you muscle people to do the right thing, that’s like forcing people to perform charity work. Is it still charity when it is involuntary? Most would say that is coerced labor.

I highly suggest the films/docs below to compliment The Bible series these next few weeks. There are so many amazing flicks out there now that prove God’s existence; the ones below are just a few ones that stand out in my mind on short notice.

      http://youtu.be/jZn5qo6Q6IY The Mysterious Islands

http://www.myspace.com/video/vid/33826735 The Case for a Creator

      http://youtu.be/AUpHyZjm3rU A Question of Origins

      http://www.youshallbelieve.com/?page_id=483 Science Tests Faith

Mysterious Islands follows a team that retraces the exact steps Darwin took to the Galapagos.Islands and views it through a 21st century lens to point out all of his errors. They also do a bio on Darwin which explains what made him invent this theory. The Case for a Creator is Lee Strobel who was an atheist who set out to “disprove” The Bible but ended up converting to Christianity. Lastly, A Question of Orgins goes step by step dismantling Evolution piece by piece. I also encourage everyone to view: A Case for Faith, The Darwin Dilemma, Dinosaurs or Dragons, Crescendo the movie (Justin Beiber’s mom), Startling Proofs, The Privileged Planet, 12 Biggest Lies, Science Tests Faith. No one can watch all these and still doubt.

@civilwarcometh: wow. YOU CLEARLY DO NOT BELIEVE THAT GOD IS IN CONTROL AND USES PEOPLE, NETWORKS, ETC, THE WAY HE SEES FIT.

I have seen GREAT and moral things all over the liberal networks. Whether those networks knew what they were showing, I do not know. I am a devout follower of Jesus Christ and I can tell you that some (not a lot) of things showing on some of these networks, I can’t help but think that God had a part in getting it to air. YOU ARE VERY CLOSED-MINDED. God can confound even the smartest people, and if you knew anything at all about the Bible OR if you had a REAL relationship with God and His Son Jesus, YOU WOULD KNOW THAT GOD CAN DO ANYTHING, WITH ANYONE, ANYWHERE HE WANTS.

I will be watching and if you don’t, you just might miss the TRUTH that GOD IS IN CONTROL, ONCE AGAIN TO SHOW WHAT HE WANTS ANYWHERE HE WANTS. It may be the last chance you have to LEARN SOMETHING.

Oh how IGNORANT these lefties and LUKE-WARM Christians ARE. Remember, it will be the luke-warm Christians that God will ‘spew out of his mouth’; In other words, everything good you THINK you did, won’t count because of your ignorance, your doubts about the power of God, and your lack of FAITH………..oh ye of little faith.

She was promoting a film she had just made and we stopped in their suite for some wings and a drink..honest…did not recognize her at all..another drop dead beautiful 6ft blonde in Vegas..after talking about kids and Vegas and film for a bit..she asked if wanted a autograph and someone handed her a 8×12..I saw her name and realized who she was…I declined the autograph but told her she was very kind to take the time to chat with us…compared to some others who were flat out rude and or drunk/high…always thought of her as a classy woman..and nice. The work I see her and husband do for the military is good and I believe from the heart….a very nice lady..easy on the eyes also :)

I registered for Glenn’s site simply to post a comment to this story, only to encounter one comment after the next filled with a bitter vitriol against everyone and anything that refuses to conform verbatim to the anti-Hollywood/anti-left theology. Is this how Christ would address the leftists in Hollywood? Yeah, they live lives of unrighteousness against God’s truth; but if God was not willing to totally abandon Nineveh, commanding Jonah to preach against their unrighteousness, why should we condemn them? If Hollywood is embracing what Mark Burnett and Roma Downey has done, maybe this is a seed being planted that will result in a harvest of righteousness.

it is considered ” primitive” to believe the Bible in most of the circles these entertainers travel in, would it not be yet another of Gods Glorious miracles to have this series produced by a few “insiders”? they would watch and tweet because it is the smart thing to do, not knowing that the Holy spirit will be tugging on them to call them back to the Lord..these people laugh at most biblical productions because it is done outside the inner circle of star power…and they dont watch…I say that every morning , as long as God is still on the throne, he is in control… lets enjoy this.. peace

Please note that in many cases these are tweets directing you to the twitter feeds or whatever they’re called of friends involved in the production. Whether Jane Lynch or Adam Levine or Shakira actually like it or watch is irrelevant, so long as their fans and followers can be induced to watch this instead of “Girls.” Probably most of them are scratching backs in order to get scratched back. So God does work in mysterious ways.

A friend told me about this series last week..When he said it was up for academy awards or some such rubbish..then I was skeptical..even more so with the list of of supporters provided..Remember the Bible story on television which had Jesus marrying Mary Magdalene? Lucifer is always up to tricks.. Kaballah (religion of Freemasons) is the same way..witchcraft..occultism..condemned by YHWH.. Read the Bible..it is the Word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit…and has been proven time and again..Wide is the path to destruction..Narrow is the way to God ( there be few that find it).. and can only be achieved through acceptance of Jesus/Yeshua..only begotten Son of God..who left His place on high..to be born of a virgin..who lived a perfect sin free life..to prove Himself acceptable to take the sins of the world upon His shoulders..was crucified for us..died and rose the third day and went again to take His rightful place at the right hand of Father God..and those accepting and asking Him into their hearts..reading his word (The Holy Bible) and abiding in that word..should have everlasting life,..May His mercy and grace be upon you..

The problem Ray is with a large majority of young people, the evil one is winning by distracting them every which way. Its time for the bible to come out in a form that can beat those distractions and hold their attention. The Bible is an incredible telling of history that can hold up to any drama out there. Unfortunately no one since the 10 Commandments could or wanted to put the time and the money to make a good production until now.

Not my type of Christianity. I used to watch Touched by An Angel and found that to be a good, wholesome show. I doubt Roma Downey would purposely do anything contrary to the Spirit of the Bible.

I like Hoot_Owl’s comments here. Correcting and defending, defending and correcting, but being appropriately critical when someone makes an honest stab at getting the message right. The message for moral behavior illuminated by Christ and by over 2,000 years of “youthful” practice have set the foundation, the stage, for all of modern technology. And is it therefore a surprise that the dark corners where Christ’s message fails to penetrate, those are the places today where serious worry now threatens all of mankind? As we begin to open bridges to other dimensions, as we send messages to unknown worlds in space, as we garner simple technologies that allow the innocent to split worlds, what rules should be in place, and what limits should shackle man to prevent mayhem? The Bible offers great insight. Faith, on the other hand, as the Bible says, is a gift.

Judges 16:13 And Delilah said unto Samson, Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven LOCKS of my head with the web.

19 And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven LOCKS of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.

If a black person doesn’t cut or comb their **** it will eventually Lock together (This is why they are called “LOCKS”). Samson NEVER CUT HIS ****, he let it grow and it was left “unkempt” and it grew into locks…. aka “dreadlocks”

If Samson the Israelite was white…. his **** would have grown straight and long, but not lock together. The scriptures says he had 7 locks, it is very rare for a white person to get dreadlocks naturally.

-Your definition of ‘locks’ to justify a ‘colored Samson’ is just plain silly-
Locks of ****, tresses of ****, were unique to anybody with long ****- your usage of ‘dreadlocks’ actually disproves your premise- it was the ‘kind’ of locks he had,

Not sure why you would make this a racial thing, the book of
Judges said he was defending the Hebrews against the Philistines, and the book of Hebrews chronicles his faith- but your descrip. of ‘locks’ is way off the mark

Aguilera was raised by a Catholic Dad and Mom that converted to Mormonism (before divorcing) and she’s married to a jewish guy.
Gosselin’s Dad is a Pastor and her Mom was Jewish.
      P. Diddy went to Catholic Schools his whole life.

This threshold must be addressed with reasoning.
I stand in the circle of agreeing with the programing
as long as it is accurate, which leads to the rub. IS
IT ACCURATE and by whose mental state of reasoning?

I also wonder if many of those in favor, those that have made
adamant announcements cutting against the grain of
godliness, are only supportive because it provides another
waffle for the weak minded to feed on.

Straddling the fence is the absolute worst position to hold when

Simply and sincerely, will it lead people to the
cross or away from the cross. Timing and accuracy are critical!

I don’t know if Hollywood or any other worldly outfit can make an accurate unadulterated depiction of the spirit of truth, Christ. I won’t be having high expectations so I will not be disappointed at man’s attempt to handle something without the spirit of God.

‘In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth….and darkness was upon the face of the deep……..and God said.let there be light….he made the stars also………and God saw that it was good………and God said: let us make man in our image…..

pretty much went downhill from there; thanks man….

If a person does not believe this ‘seed’ then i suppose any ensuing story will be nonsense as well. The critics will come out from all corners, the famous will ride the coat-tails of popular opinion so their alleged spirituality will increase, and the scoffer will scoff- but know this: God uses the most foolish of machinery to accomplish his purposes, even film, and even misfits such as you and I….

Look for something good in the series, and use it as a conversation with others.

Morning John……….I really have hope for this series. I remember liking the Touched By An Angel television series. I’ll watch and hope………..and pray that even God would approve.

      Amen!!
I will watch this show keeping in mind it is Hollywood but Mark and Roma are Christians so I do have good expectations. Perhaps it may touch one of the above-mentioned celebs who may actually watch it in some positive way :)…Or even myself!!

Heh, It’s the only show on TV I enjoy watching. The viking series comes after the bible, If I’m not mistaken.. This video is for you east, :). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApxnAr6pRt0

Good luck on your exam, DLV.

lol RESME.. that was hilarious. when i was a teen, it took me weeks to learn “Immigrant Song” on the drums. The double-timed backbeat used to cramp my foot! lol.. Bonham was a master.

Walking Dead is the dumbest show on television. It’s an afternoon soap opera with the occassional zombie showing up. The fact that this show is popular just shows how pathetic our society has become. No wonder Obama got re-elected.

Goodstuff- keep your opinion to yourself, no one wants to hear it. It’s one of the best shows on television along with Breaking Bad and I guess Game of Thrones.

This looks an awful lot like the Rachel Maddow twitter scam. Don’t get me wrong, I will be watching and I’m very supportive of the show.
