Did You Hear About the ‘Queer Muslim Gathering’ Held by Progressive Islamic Leaders in Detroit?

An organization aimed at educating the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community about issues facing gay African Americans teamed up with an Islamic group to host the “Queer Muslim Gathering.” The event, which started on Friday evening and continued throughout Saturday, was held in Detroit, Mich., and featured workshops intended to empower gay adherents.

Put together by Muslims for Progressive Values and a group called KICK, the gathering brought together gay, lesbian and transgender individuals from a variety of cultural backgrounds in an effort to help them learn more about their sexual identity and faith.

According to text advertising the event on the KICK web site, the conference covered homosexuality and the Koran, developing inclusive prayer spaces and a number of other related subjects.

The two-day initiative featured Imam Daayiee Abdullah, a gay Muslim leader who grew up in Detroit, but who now lives and works in Washington, D.C., the Detroit Free Press reports. Explaining the conference’s intent, the Islamic faith leader, who is the director of LGBT outreach for Muslims for Progressive Values, noted the importance of helping the LGBT community rectify sexuality with the Muslim faith.

“We feel it is important for LGBT Muslims to be included as equals into the straight Muslim society,” Abdullah said, going on to note that he believes Islamic views against homosexuality are rooted in cultural misrepresentations and not God’s truth.

In addition to debunking homophobia, the faith leader, who is based at the Light of Reform Mosque in the nation’s capital, seeks to empower gays and lesbians.

And KICK’s executive director, Curtis Lipscomb, told the Detroit Free Press that the group is hoping to create a more inclusive Islamic atmosphere — one in which people feel accepted regardless of sexual orientation or preference.

“We confidently believe that in the next 20 years, this Islam will be the norm in America,” Lipscomb told the outlet.

This development comes as other faiths are also making decisions about how to handle homosexuality. Most mainstream religious systems take a stand against gay marriage and believe that homosexuality stands in opposition to God’s plan for humanity. The purpose of the “Queer Muslim Gathering,” though, was to dispel this ideology.

  I find it odd that this is held in Detroit. Detroit is a shadow of itself. They are holding an event in a broken community because they will have an easier time there.

  Well, the Middle East is certainly not progressive, but they are definitely socialists. Being annoyingly/publicly gay, in a Muslim country, is pretty much a death warrant.
  
  Now what’s going in Middle East, and the shenanigans in Detroit are two different things. If you’re talking Black Muslim, and most any brand of authentic Islam, it’s like being from different planets. Black Liberation Theology is not even on the radar in Riyadh.   Vaman, off the top of your head, name one Christian country where homosexuality is a crime (much less a crime whose sentence is execution). When a homeless African American sat outside a Chick FilA reading a Bible on the days gays protested, he was surrounded by and taunted by many white male gays. So it was a Christian being attacked by gays (you didn’t see it if you just watch the MSM … it would have been front page news of “Tea Baggers” did that .. but not news since it was just gay males. If you were thinking of joining these guys, feel free, but don’t get so excited that you think you can go into the “real” Arab world like that. Things won’t go well for you in the middle east.

The participants engaged in a role playing exercise called Deep Hole. It is not what you think. Each participant was given a shovel to dig a hole arm pit deep and gather rocks. They then played a game of gopher except the participant could only move their head left and right.

And in other news:

The gay Muslim group at the conference was seen copulating with goats and giving instructions. For those not wishing to copulate with a live goat there was a video game simulation in which electric dadoids could be velcroed to suicide bomb vests giving the sensation of copulating with a goat. Plastic goats were also available for feeling up. NO real goats were abused however, a few sheep were seen limping toward the exit stairway in an attempt to escape being tortured with cattle prods. The S&M Society of Gay Muslims was seriously affronted when they were turned away at the conference door and called “pervert wacky too way out there” for the conference adherents. Joe Biden tried to start a Civil Rights March but was sent away for being an “infidel of the worst kind” for not being Gay. He protested and showed his Gay CARD but no one believed him. It was reported that stank alcohol breath was really the cause and he was condemned for not being Gay although he claimed he was and also condemned for using alcohol, which is forbidden by Islam. He promised to abuse a goat but not even this suggestion could induce the convention participants to let him in. In other news: Ricky Martin, famed Latino pop star, has reported he is now a Muslim and would like to start abusing goats as well.
