Joe Biden: No President Has Ever Been as Pro-Israel as Obama

Vice President Joe Biden made an extraordinary claim today about President Barack Obama’s record on Israel while speaking to the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) Conference. Israel National News reports:

The Obama administration has been better for Israel than the last eight administrations, Vice-President Joe Biden told a large crowd at the AIPAC conference Monday. “We’ve stood shoulder to shoulder over the past 40 years defending the legitimate interests of Israel,” Biden told an enthusiastic audience, “but no administration, no President has done as much to physically secure the State of Israel as Barack Obama,” Biden said. In the midst of what Biden called “the Great Recession,” the U.S. has upped its aid to Israel, providing $1.3 billion in military aid in 2012.

In addition, Biden said, President Obama has worked more closely with Israeli security officials than any other president in the last thirty years. “I can say with certitude that I don’t know when anytime in the last eight administrations that there has been as much security coordination,” Biden said. “The teams working with Israel are tired of all the international flights, they go so much,” the Vice-President quipped. “Our commitment to Israel has not changed and it will not change as long as he and I are President and Vice-President of the United States.”

Biden acknowledged that there were policy differences between Israel and the U.S., but said they were not relevant to U.S. support for Israel. “I have been there for a lot of Prime Ministers, and we have always disagreed on tactics. But we have never disagreed on the principles – that Israel must do it on its own,” Biden said, adding that it was the role of the U.S. to ensure that that was the case.

Biden’s remark would come as news to many observers. The Obama administration has consistently maintained a tense relationship with the current Israeli government, including and especially Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Most notably, President Obama has reportedly outright stated that “Israel doesn’t know what its own best interests are.”

This statement prompted Netanyahu to fire back, “I think everyone understands that only Israel’s citizens are those who will be the ones to determine who faithfully represents Israel’s vital interests.”

Obviously, under Obama’s standards, Biden’s statement makes more sense. After all, if the United States knows what’s best for Israel better than Israel, than any President who simply follows his own opinions will be the most pro-Israel President in existence. By contrast, defining Israel’s interests as Israel sees them, Biden’s statement is difficult to stomach.

  If you don’t believe me, I point you to the election races of 2008 and 2012, as well as the campaigning for Obamacare and the total demonization of anyone that disagrees with the current administration.

  Joe Biden needs to learn history. America has always been friends with Israel though we have had anti-Israel presidents and leaders.
  
  In order for conservatives to win in the future we need to educate our youth and adults. Here are a few things they need to learn:
  1) The first, second, etc black Senators and Congressmen were all Republicans.
  2) Woodrow Wilson was the leader of the progressive movement and push his agenda through a Democrat run majority to introduce federally controlled segregation.
  3) NRA was set up to help blacks against the KKK.

Mr. Holt naively assumes that Mr. Netanyahu’s policies are representative of “What’s best for Israel”. That’s “hard to stomach” since Mr. Netanyahu’s party was spanked by the voters in the most recent election, narrowly holding on to his post as Prime Minister. The results marked a major setback for his policies and could force him to make new concessions to restart long-stalled peace talks with the Palestinians.

What Mr. Holt and many right wing “journalist” don’t realise is that there is far more debate in Israel with respect to “What’s best for Israel” w.r.t. the Palestinian occupation and Iran then there is among the R’s and D’s in the US.

So just because Mr. Obama didn’t personally get along with Mr. Netanyahu doesn’t mean he doesn’t support “What’s best for Israel”.

Also recall Ehud Barak praising US Israeli relations last fall…

  Mr. Obama won by 126 electoral votes (332 to 206) – anything over 300 is usually considered a landslide.
  D’s also picked up 8 seats in the “Tea Party” dominated House and 2 seats in the Senate which they were supposed to lose.

  Netanyahu lost some seats but the lead opposition party, Labor, lost even more and went from second largest to third largest as a result with a new start up party taking second place. Your entire argument is based on a two-party approach to politics. To judge Israel’s opinion on Bibi’s policies based solely on election results you’d have to compare his policies to those that the new second place party, Yesh Atid, hold. The policies that were truly repudiated were those of Labor and the far left, who were the primary proponents of more concessions to Abbas. When the new coalition is formed, it’s quite possible Netanyahu will have an even larger majority.
  
  As for Obama, the simple truth is he lost a lot of votes compared to 2008. Even Bush, who was far from popular, won more support for his second term than he did for his first in spite of losing seats in the house.

  I’m Jewish and I voted against Obama, as did most if not all of my immediate family and the majority of my Jewish friends. Moreover, far fewer Jews voted to reelect Obama than voted to elect him to begin with. Had the entire country showed the same degree of change as the Jews from 2008 Obama likely wouldn’t be President.

  Using electoral college results is highly misleading. For example, in my state only 25% of our Congressmen are Democrats and we have a Republican Governor, yet still our state went to Obama. This was almost exclusively due to the big cities (which are almost always Democrat) having such large populations and such a disproportionate percentage of Obama voters relative to the rest of the state. If one were to look at a county by county map this becomes painfully obvious.

  You’re emphasizing the election results which were expected, Labour losing seats to, those that were somewhat surprising, Likud losing seats and the ascendency of Yesh Atid (most likely by attracting centrist voters from both Likud and Labour).
  
  The Israeli election was not a referendum on the Labour party; it was a referendum on Mr. Netanyahu and his policies.
  
  As far the US Jewish vote…
  
  Mr. Obama still got 70% of the Jewish vote in 2012 slipping either 4% or 8% depending on whether you believe the D’s who (from subsequent polls and additional analysis ) claim he got 74% in 2008, or the R’s (from exit polls) claim he got 78%.
  
  So it depends who you believe – not that if you go with the D’s number the Jewish vote pretty much slipped by the same rate the national vote slipped.
  
  I say split the difference and call it a 6% slip.
  
  Interesting that Mr. Obama actually got a higher percentage of the Jewish vote in 2008 than John Kerry got in 2004.

Mr Biden, not quite sure WHAT Israel you are speaking of. Some may argue that your words and description of the current regimes support of Israel may be just a tad off the mark.

Pardon me for being so skeptical,as the proof is not in the pudding-

  Joe’s head houses this countries largest natural methane gas deposit. You’ll find his brain housed somewhere around his a.h. Jim Carrey does a interesting impression of Joe with his talking rear end routine, as can be seen in the movie ‘dumb and dumber’, which is losely based on Joe and Barry’s exploits. Right now it’s Joe’s rear end doing a ventriloquist act, incognito (in hiding). Joe’s lips just move but it’s his a$$ does the talking. It’s probably why people, who get a load of Joe’s breath, recommend he use an industrial strengh mouth wash and breath ments.
