Oberlin College Cancels Classes for ‘Day of Solidarity’ After Report on Campus of Someone in KKK Garb

Oberlin College Cancels Classes in Favor of Day of Solidarity After Hate, Racial Incidents

Ohio’s Oberlin College, ranked the third most liberal college in the country by Newsweek and the College Prowler, cancelled classes Monday in favor of a “day of solidarity” after a slew of reported “hate-related” incidents.

The school essentially said that, after the sighting of someone in Ku Klux Klan-style garb, they felt the issue could not wait another day.

They posted this message on their website:

Early this morning, there was a report of a person wearing a hood and robe resembling a KKK outfit between South and the Edmonia Lewis Center and in the vicinity of Afrikan Heritage House. This report is being investigated by both Safety and Security and the Oberlin Police Department. This event, in addition to the series of other hate-related incidents on campus, has precipitated our decision to suspend formal classes and all non-essential activities for today, Monday, March 4, 2013, and gather for a series of discussions of the challenging issues that have faced our community in recent weeks.

We hope today will allow the entire community—students, faculty, and staff—to make a strong statement about the values that we cherish here at Oberlin: inclusion, respect for others, and a strong and abiding faith in the worth of every individual. Indeed, the strength of Oberlin comes from our belief that diversity and openness enriches us all, and enhances the educational mission at its core.  [Emphasis added]

Students have already begun making posters for the rally, it seems:

The Oberlin Review documented a number of the “hate speech incidents” as they were happening, choosing not to alter the language or censor the posts (extreme content warning):

Feb. 9: Vandalism in the Science Center included the replacement of “Black” with “Nigger” on Black History Month posters, drawings of swastikas, damage to the “Year of the Queer” posters and reported destruction of the Chinese calendar.

Feb. 12: LGBTQ Community Coordinator Lorena Espinoza found a note in the Multicultural Resource Center that read “Nigger + Faggot Center.”

Feb. 16: Students found a number of offensive notes written around Burton Hall. “Whites Only” was written above a water fountain, “Nigger Oven” was written inside the elevator and “No Niggers” was written on a bathroom door.

Feb. 17: The Office of Safety and Security released a Special Alert of a strong-arm robbery of a student near West College Street and Cedar Street. The student reported that he was approached by an individual who made a derogatory remark about his perceived ethnicity and then physically knocked him to the ground.

Feb. 26: Posters were defaced in King including those advertising “Year of the Queer” and the Affirmative Action panel, at least one of which had a swastika drawn on it.

Feb. 27: A swastika drawn onto the outside window of West Lecture Hall in the Science Center was seen being removed by custodial staff.

Scott Wargo, an Oberlin spokesman, told the New York Times: “I’m not sure why anyone is doing it, but those actions have made people uneasy and say we need to come together and discuss this.”

The New York Times adds:

Founded in 1833, Oberlin was one of the first colleges in the nation to educate women and men together, and one of the first to admit black students. Before the Civil War, it was an abolitionist hotbed and an important stop on the underground railroad.

“We believe that today’s events—and our ongoing work and discussions—will strengthen Oberlin and will strengthen us all,” the school’s invitation to the “Day of Solidarity” rally concludes.

I live about 10 mins from Oberlin…I hate even going into that city. Its just a bunch of liberal rich kids wasting mommy and daddy’s money at an overly expensive waste of a college. What are you gonna do with a liberal arts degree? You can’t even drive through the city without being stopped because they just walk across the street with no regard for any vehicles traveling down the road. I’ve had to slam on my breaks to avoid hitting them before. If this were a black panthers member walking around the streets of Oberlin I guarantee they would not have canceled classes…they prob would have thrown a party or something.

Since it was in the vicinity of Afrikan Heritage House, has it occurred to them it may have been someone of Afrikan Heritage? Some of those outfits are really out there.
A Saw a meeting by a river once that I thought was Klan. It was a Black United Holiness Church meeting.

the entire event smells like it was done by a student. I made the fatal mistake of watching the coverage on GMA this morning, then bleached my eyes.
When its outed that it was perpetrated by a student will the MSM attack them or retract the story? the answer of course is no.

Well, the spoiled little liberal kids got their panties all in a bunch and are running around squealing like sorority girls. If they aren’t fortunate enough to get a tenured professorship at a liberal college they are in for a very rude surprise when they find themselves in the real world. Wankers.

This is as silly as it gets… what is this? We have soldiers dying overseas, children killing children daily in Chicago, our country is on the verge of financial disaster, our civil liberties are being taken away and some overeducated crybabies run into some childish hate speech and they fold like a cheap cardtable.
This sounds like something Barry Obama should get involved in. Perhaps he needs to run down to Oberlin and hold a cry summit.

What did you call it when the media protrayed Mitt Romney with glee as having a “wah wah” moment? Was the media wearing their version of a KKK hood (nobody knew who or what they were doing), was that a moment of “hate”?

On further pondering, it’s sorta cool that in “the third most liberal college in the country” there’s STILL somebody with enough STONES to DO this. One stallion left in a herd of geldings.
Also did you catch that “The Year of the Queer” is acceptable speech?
Wonder if The Blaze’s own language will get past The Blaze’s moronic e-censor.

If they really want to be offended and shocked, they should go look up race and IQ statistics. They should especially look into the Minnesota Transracial Adoption study which proved that the widely observed racial IQ gaps weren’t the result of environmental/cultural influences but instead inherited genetic differences in cognitive ability. That politically incorrect scientific data debunks their entire worldview.

The real cause of domestic and global racial inequality is suddenly revealed… Some races are simply more intelligent and civilized than others. It has nothing to do with White Supremacy, “White Privilege” or the “legacy” of it. The wild success of Asians in “Amerikkka” proves that there is no racist White Supremacist conspiracy to hold down non-Whites and that IQ mostly dictates racial success rates.

The justification for “affirmative action” and “diversity” policies (which systematically discriminate against White people and Males) has been that there supposedly exists a conspiracy carried out by heterosexual Christian White Males to hold back and oppress “others”.

It’s time for the Left to be honest and admit that the real reason they support “positive discrimination” is because they hate Whites, Christians and Males and because brown people are simply too stupid to compete with Whites on a fair playing field…

Why is this a story? Why are all of these healthy adults afraid of a clown in a KKK outfit? My God what wusses the youth have become. I blame the teachers in large part because making people afraid and weak it what they do best. Our nation is 17 I think in the world as far as excellence in education. Quit being so weak and stand up for God’s sake.

Whenever I hear a liberal use the term inclusive anymore, I take it as code meaning anyone but white male,Christian conservatives. Its like they all went to an organizing seminar and learned a new word and who it applies to. I noticed management started using this word before promoting females to positions males had to earn, because femalels couldnt do the entry level work.

Yeah, but learning what? That if you’re white, you’re inherently racist? Or if you believe in God that you’re automatically oppressing atheist? Or how about that if you own a gun, you’re simply pure, plain evil, because there’s nothing to fear from our Obamunist president…the country may be better off if more schools like this cancelled more classes.

So inclusiveness for everyone but the guy in KKK garb? I’m sure that inclusiveness doesnt also extend to the Christian or conservative groups as well. The people who always preach about being inclusive, are always the ones who exclude those who dont agree with their views.

I Always think of Jason Levin, the Oregon school teacher who advised fellow Democrats to write racist posters and take them to Tea Party rallies. I do NOT trust any of our “progressive ” Democrats – especially the radical, community organizer types who are trained in all of the under -handed, devious Alinsky/ Lucifer tactics of lying , targeting and smearing.

This is what you must know:

Funny, I always think of Mark Williams, Tea Party Express honcho, who wrote this re: an SEIU rally:

“Here is what I am doing in Sacramento, where they are holding a 5:30 PM event this coming Tuesday: (1) I signed up as an organizer (2) with any luck they will contact me and I will have an “in” (3) in or not I will be there and am asking as many other people as can get there to come with, all of us in SEIU shirts (those who don’t have them we can possibly buy some from vendors likely to be there) (4) we are going to target the many TV cameras and reporters looking for comments from the members there (5) we will approach the cameras to make good pictures… signs under our shirts that say things like “screw the taxpayer!” and “you OWE me!” to be pulled out for the camera (timing is important because the signs will be taken away from us) (6) we will echo those slogans in angry sounding tones to the cameras and the reporters. (7) if I do get the ‘in’ I am going to do my darnedest to get podium access and take the mic to do that rant from there…with any luck and if I can manage the moments to build up to it, I can probably get a cheer out of the crowd for something extreme.”

      People are funny that way.

      It is so.
