The Craziest End to a High School Basketball Game You May Ever See: 3 Seconds, 2 Steals, 1 Buzzer-Beater
It’s as easy as 3-2-1.
Just ask the New Rochelle High School boys basketball team. On Sunday, with just seconds left in the New York Section I Class AA boys basketball championship game against Mt. Vernon and down two points (58-60), they pulled of an unbelievable finish that included two steals and a half-court buzzer beater.
This is how Yahoo describes it: “Ladies and Gentlemen, say hello to what is absolutely, positively the most incredible, bizarre outrageous buzzer beater of 2013, at any level.”
“This might be the buzzer-beater of all time,” ESPN anchor Steve Levy said on SportsCenter Sunday night.
“The most amazing shot I’ve ever seen… .” That’s how the announcer calling the game put it.
That’s a lot of praise. And it’s deserved. With just about three seconds left (2.9 to be exact), New Rochelle’s Khalil Edney inbounded the ball from the opposite end of the court. It was intercepted by a Mt. Vernon player who then threw the ball in the air toward another teammate. That’s when Edney stepped up to intercept that pass and heaved a half-court prayer toward the hoop with 0.1 seconds left.
Nothing but the bottom of the net.
However, both teams started celebrating on the court, both thinking they had just one. The referees huddled and called the shot good (there’s not video review in NY high school basketball).
It was a good call. 3 seconds, 2 steals, 1 game-winner. Just watch — and pay special attention to the announcers:
“I can’t believe it happened. I’m in shock right now,” Edney told ESPN.
“I just threw it up. I thought it was gonna bounce off the front rim, but it was all net,” he added. “I couldn’t believe it.
“I didn’t know whether it counted or not [at first]. In my eyes, it counted, so I started running around. Everybody stormed the court. I was under the pile when we found out it might not count. Then the referees huddled, and when they said the shot was good, I started running around again and screaming.”
Part of that might be because as the team’s center, Edney hadn’t hit a three pointer all season — the buzzer-beater was his first.
When it counted most.
Read more on Edney, who will play quarterback in junior college next year, over at ESPN.

Posted on March 4, 2013 at 10:46pmGood call refs. Once had a season ending epic bad call from a softball ref. who called a player safe, then out, then safe, then out – all for the same play. We think he just missed the play or forgot what he saw. Anyway our division winning run/win was ultimately ruled an out/loss. The parents on both sides were not happy. The coach for the opposing team told some of our girls including mine that the ump’s call was bad. Thanks sucktastic ump for a season ending bad call. So, good umpires are really appreciated. Though job; I couldn’t do it.

Posted on March 5, 2013 at 6:56pmActually, maybe not. I was able to stop the video with the ball still in his fingertips. At that moment the red light on the backboard flashes on. The time clock you see on
t.v. screens is not always accurate, but there’s no denying the red light which is tied directly to the game clock.

Posted on March 4, 2013 at 8:28pmYou can clearly see space between the ball blur and his hands when there is 0.1 seconds left. Shot was good but kudos to the Mt Vernon kids as well for not causing trouble at the end of a hard fought game. Would have loved to see the post-game press conference with Mt Vernon’s coach.

Posted on March 4, 2013 at 12:32pmI agree with the posts that they should have held the ball and run out the clock, but I think the kids got caught up in the moment and instinct and not reason prevailed. No one could have anticipated that outcome. I hope the losing coach took everything into consideration and didn’t come down to hard on the kid for not holding onto the ball, I’m sure he realized it immediately after that he made a mistake. Unbelievable finish.

Posted on March 4, 2013 at 9:22amYou’re up by two points, with 3 seconds left and you’ve just stolen the ball. Why do you make that pass? That’s what lost the game for Mt. Vernon. That’s why coaches tell you that you need to think.

Posted on March 4, 2013 at 10:53amExactly. I mean sure the other team made a wild shoot and lucked out that it went it but what really lost the game for Mt. Vernon was that they managed to get the ball while ahead and didn’t hold on to it. Very stupid pass.

Posted on March 4, 2013 at 9:17amThe phrase is “Nothing but net.” When you say, “Nothing but the bottom of the net” it sounds like he missed and the ball hit the bottom of the net.

Posted on March 4, 2013 at 11:08amgotta defend the announcer. i understand your point, but “nothing but the bottom of the net” is a refinement of “nothing but net”. it indicates not only did he not hit the rim, but he did not hit the sides of the net until almost through the net. some coaches even use the term to encourage the shooter to put more arc on the ball, i.e., in firearm terms, “aim small, miss small”. as a player, i tried to always aim for “the bottom of the net”. it wasn’t an accurate description in this case, but there’s nothing wrong with the term per se.
and kudos to the refs for not ruining a great moment! very professional. they conferenced, made the call quickly, correctly, with authority, and then got the hell out of the gym as fast as possible. well done, lads!

Mt.Vernon player needed to hold the ball, not pass it. Mistakes make for an interesting outcome.

Posted on March 4, 2013 at 11:38amI have seen and participated in what is a cool conclusion to this situation. The kid that steals the inbound should have just thrown the ball to the ceiling and stepped out of the way. They gather under an unshootable ball. It does take timing but I think that it should be practiced by the modern coach ‘cuz the clock at the end is critical. The kid definitely should not have passed. He did it out of instinct to get the ball down for an easy lay up. Bad idea at the end of a “barn burner.”
Great to see sports…no body mentions race when sports are good.

Posted on March 4, 2013 at 8:12amwhy the heck did the Mt. Vernon player that initially stole the ball try to pass it at all?
if he held it- they win.
He’s just a kid and now he is a goat and the whole world knows it.
Good for New Rochelle… but i’m not a fan of putting High School and youth sports on TV.
