Democratic Strategist’s Shocking Claim: Women Don’t Need Guns for Self-Defense, Just Tell Men ‘Not to Rape Women’

Appearing on Fox News Tuesday night, Democratic Strategist Zerlina Maxwell argued that preventing rape should start by simply “telling men not to rape women.” She was arguing against women using guns as a means of self-defense when she made the questionable remarks.

Host Sean Hannity began by slamming the “ignorant politicians” in Colorado for trying to remove a woman’s right to use a firearm to defend herself against an attacker via gun control legislation.

“I don’t think that we should be telling women anything,” Maxwell said. “I think we should be telling men not to rape women and start the conversation there.”

“Criminals are not going to listen to that,” Hannity interjected.

“You are talking about it as if there is some faceless, nameless criminal, when a lot of times it is someone that you know and trust,” Maxwell replied.

Hannity pointed out that “evil exists in the world” and women need to know that these situations unfortunately occur.

“We can prevent rape by telling men not to commit it,” Maxwell said, repeating the same bizarre claim.

Instead, Maxwell, who is a rape survivor herself, said she wants women to “not be in this situation.” She added that if you “train” men not to be rapists, we can prevent rape.

“If firearms were the answer, then the military would be the safest place for women and it’s not,” she said.

  What is she taklking about regarding the military? My son was in the Navy, a weapon’s specialist. They had to sign out guns(not sure of the actual procedure), but everyone was not walking around armed unless they were in a combat area…and “TRAIN” men not to rape!!!   We teach our kids not to have sex before marriage, we teach our kids not to use drugs, we teach our kids not to kill, and we teach our kids to treat others like we wish to be treated. Some kids listen and try to follow, but some people don’t.

  I feel sorry for her if she really was raped because she is still nothing more than a victim in waiting. Sorry but as a woman that was almost carjacked by a guy that raped at least 5 women and killed his last victim I can not feel condone or support people like this. My experience happened across from a gun free zone and he targeted a gun free area. And I’m pretty darned sure that he knew he shouldn’t be raping women, how can she think that another law or admonition of “don’t rape women, it’s bad” would change a rapist’s mind???   The comments on this piece are disgustingly vile. Zerlina Maxwell made a point that many have made before. Her point is a simple one. We’ve created a situation in which women are given all these pointers as to how they can prevent rape (e.g. don’t wear “slutty” clothing when going out, keep your key between your fingers when you’re walking alone, buy a powerful weapon so you’ll be able to defend yourself against an unknown predator). First off, Maxwell is right in noting that most who face sexual assault face it at the hands of one she knows. Secondly, Maxwell is right to note that perhaps we would see significant declines in sexual assault if we spent time teaching young men about what consent means, how one should respect women, and that no matter what a woman is wearing, her body is her body and no one has any right to it without her permission. Many who have commented here likely have no interest in having a reasonable discussion about this or any other issue, but for those who have commented here and have questioned whether Zerlina was actually raped and who have wished her harm in this comment section or have sent her mean-spirited notes on social networking sites, I pray that your daughters never have to experience what Zerlina and millions of women in this country and around the world experience each day. One can only pray that you will come to realize how disgusting your comments are and that Zerlina Maxwell has the heart to forgive you.

  I think you guys are missing the true critical error of this woman’s entire argument. I just watched the clip, and in her attempt to justify women not carrying weapons, and later proving that she believes firearms are not the solution, she makes the case for the complete opposite when she says you tell people why they should not do bad things. This is EXACTLY what we’ve been trying to get across to these people.
  
  This is not a gun issue, it is a cultural issue. The culture of our country is in decline, and in its decline, morality is no longer heading our society. Taking all the guns in the world will not solve our violence problem, but teaching children the value of life, and a fearing respect for firearms does.
  
  Whether she realizes it or not, she just made the case against gun control in its purest form, and Sean was an idiot not to exploit that.

Hmmm never thought of that. I guess by telling people not to murder, they will stop murdering too. That means we don’t have to give up our guns then. Teachers should use this same logic. They can tell kids to get good grades and they will do just that. It just goes to show that the prerequisite for being a liberal is that you have to be a complete dumb arse.

  I don’t know, I’d kind of like to take her demented Obamazombie approach to Gun control. Instead of Raping the second ammendment, why not just teach psycopaths to not commit mass shootings? We could just kinda put the word out that it’s bad mmmK? The fact that a statement like hers could even be brought to public attention tells me one thing; The end is near. Whether of the biblical sense, or revolutionary, some pretty radical changes are coming. I think that there are enough of us that are so sickened and disgusted with what has become of our Country and Society, that it is an inevitability and it won’t be pretty. It is however, necessary. We, not only as Americans, but as a species, cannot continue down the path that has been chosen by Obama and his ilk. That path leads to the complete breakdown of civilized society and a complete unraveling of our moral fabric. I think that what disturbs me most is that those of us who do have strong character and moral ethics are now the ones who are viewed as extremist and subversives and that is what leads me to believe that civil war is just around the corner.

  How ignorant can you all be? The whole point she’s trying to address is that by blaming the victim, it means the perpetrators shouldn’t be held accountable for their actions because afterall it’s the victim’s fault for being raped in the first place, right? The only way the address the issue is by addressing the perpetrators. I’m sure in your world, if a woman wears high heels, a low-cut top, or a short skirt she deserves to be raped because she’s “asking for it.” So then men are not accountable for their actions which means it’s acceptable for men to rape whomever and whatever they want, because clearly they just can’t help themselves. Sorry guys, I guess I thought we lived in America, not the middle east.

I wonder if Maxwell told her rapist to not do it? My guess is yes, and it doesn’t sound as though it worked very well. She’s right though, she should have a choice to use that option to protect her self. And every women should have the right to choose how they protect their selves. Some may choose to to tell their rapist to stop, others may use self defense techniques, and still others may choose to show or use a gun. Where she goes wrong is believing that all women should only choose what Maxwell chooses. Progressives?????????

I’m interested to know her complete stance on guns (although I can already make an educated guess on it). If she is going to say that things like AR-15s are unnecessary and all that crap, can we not apply her logic to the entire gun talk and just say, “Tell people to stop shooting each other”? The logical and philosophical inconsistencies of these people just knows no bounds.

  It’s a simple exercise of logic and common sense. The problem with people like her, is she runs on emotion, not critical thinking. As a consequence, she creates holes in her logic. I wish Hannity would exploit these inconsistencies, but unfortunately, Hannity is something of an emotional thinker as well. So he doesn’t get anything done, and rather than address her argument directly and turn it on itself, he just tosses out more basic right-wing argument points. So they just go back and forth, “No, you’re wrong! I’m right!”.

  Furthermore, I would also ask this ‘strategist’ that if a woman should have the rights to contraceptives because it is a woman’s reproductive right, where is the outcry for women to carry a firearm for their personal protection rights? To hell with people ‘feeling’ it is wrong to carry a gun, just like we should say to hell with people ‘feeling’ it is wrong to abort a baby, right?
  
  When you consider it, it is the exact same concept. In both arguments, a woman is utilizing tools to inflict harm on a human being. The only difference is with the contraceptive right, the human life is innocent, and the personal protection right, the human life is not.
