Singer Carly Rae Jepsen Cancels Boy Scouts’ Jamboree Performance Over Gay Policies

Singer Carly Rae Jepsen took to Twitter this morning to take a public stand against the Boy Scouts of America’s official position on homosexuality. Jepsen, who was scheduled to perform at the organization’s National Scout Jamboree this summer, used the platform to officially back out of the event.

In a three messages, she highlighted her support for the gay community and said that she plans to stay engaged in the battle for homosexual rights.

“As an artist who believes in equality for all people, I will not be participating in the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree this summer,” she wrote. “I always have and will continue to support the LGBT community on a global level.”

Jepsen’s decision to cancel her appearance at the coveted Boy Scouts event comes after the band Train made the same choice a few days ago.

The cancellations are not random. They came, as ABC News reports, after gay Eagle Scout Derek Nance launched a petition calling on these celebrities to distance themselves from the Boy Scouts by canceling their performances at the event.

His petition — one that attracted tens of thousands of signatures — read, in part:

My name is Derek Nance. I’m an Eagle Scout and a former Boy Scout camp leader. I’m also gay, and a fan of Carly Rae Jepsen (Call Me Maybe) and Train (Drops of Jupiter). That’s why I was surprised to see that both Carly Rae and Train would be headlining the National Scout Jamboree this July, but hadn’t yet spoken out against the Boy Scouts’ policy banning gay youth and parents. As a talented artists with incredibly loyal LGBT fans around the globe, I hope they will speak out quickly, and urge the Boy Scouts to end its dangerous anti-gay policy.

After serving 10 years as a Boy Scout camp leader, I decided I couldn’t lie about who I was any longer and came out as gay. Now, because of the Boy Scouts of America’s hurtful anti-gay policy I’m no longer allowed to be part of an organization that has been an instrumental part of my life.

Nance’s petition now proclaims victory in the wake of these artists’ announcements. The Jamboree will unfold from July 15-24 in West Virginia.

  The scouts need to hold their ground. Or push back by having it member boycott everything that supports gay rights from it clothing manufacturer to its equipment suppliers,to all forms of media.
  If gays want to being in a scouting program well start one as an alternative to boy scouts.

  ANDY…let me put it to you in these terms…..would you allow your adolescent daughter to be isolated for an extended period of time with a heterosexual adult male who oversees her sleeping, bathing and personal arrangements during that time of isolation together? Isn’t it the same thing having a homosexual male do this for young boys and adolescents? Or are you as myopic in your delusions about “equality” as the vacuous Ms Jespen?

  Just like Ringling Bros. had to sue ASPCA back after they defamed them, the Boy Scouts should sue both acts for breech of contract. The circus won a big judgement and showed the lefties that they won’t back down. The Scouts need to do the same, stand up and remember, A Scout is Reverent. Listen, I am fairly libertarian, but I do feel that it goes both ways, if the Scouts don’t want open gays in their ranks, that is their right.   If being gay is truly a choice rather than an identity, why don’t you choose to be gay for a day? Just to prove your point. Spend one whole day attracted to the same gender. If you can’t do that, what makes you think we can choose to be attracted to the opposite sex? And we are not the ones sexualizing everything. In this case, the Boy Scout leaders made a big deal out of sexuality; this woman was only refusing to be associated with a discriminating organization.   When I was in the Navy I was located in an exclusive duty station where there was a nest of homosexuals. All you need is one extra fruity chief who runs rough shod over the command and thinks with his all beef frank. I guess to him it was like a kid being let loose in a candy shop. It was real nasty and not that he was fruity, but how he not so discriminently acted using his authority in conjuction with his fruitiness. How about the Catholic Church? It sure worked for them (not). Of course libs look at that from a whole different perspective whereas the Church is concerned
  
  There are decent gays, but how does one distinguish decent from proactive except by trial and error. Why take the chance with someone elses kids. Carly Rae is to stupid to care because she’s to busy trying to be politically correct in an effort to selfishly promote her career. I wonder if she had a son, if she’d be all supportive of an openly fruity scout master, you know the kind of guy who hangs around the boys gym at the local middle school. That only comes out after he’s engaged her son ‘lil willy’ in some gay fun. Of course then it would be the scouts fault. Norma (Carly) needs her head examined. In the mean time she can use her singing talents suitably at a Howard Johnson Motor Inn loung, if one still exists.   In this case, if it’s NOT a choice, then all the more reason they need to ban it. Think about it — stop acting like everything is a mere political game for you to play, and remember the Boy Scouts actually have a responsibility to keep the young boys they teach safe.
  
  As someone already said, would you want men in a similar position over your young daughter? If you’re the kind of person who CANNOT HELP IT when it comes to who you’re attracted to, then it’s very logical to worry that you have a similar lack of self-control when it comes to acting on those impulses.
  
  Maybe they’re being over-cautious, but there are other organizations similar to the scouts that have no such rule if you want alternatives. The parents of the children have the right to expect a mainstream organization like the Scouts to take their childrens’ safety seriously. Those parents who disagree can send their kids to other organizations.
  
  What really gets me is that often the same liberals whining about the Scouts policy will hate on the Catholic Church for not being so cautious, and look what happened? How is this not liberal hypocrisy at its worst?
  
  I don’t mind a celeb not endorsing the Scouts if she disagrees with the policy, though. *shrugs*

I’m surprised so many people are saying “I’ve never heard of her.” I’m no spring chicken myself, but her song “Call Me Maybe” was one of the most popular songs last summer; so much so that even without listening to radio, I still learned about it.

As for her choice… well, it’s her choice. Hope she hadn’t signed a contract yet or she’ll be sued for millions.

  AK, I know! Just resurrected my vinyl 2 years ago. You have to spend some money on the right equipment, but there is no comparison between digital and analog. I spent 20 years converting my vinyl collection to CD and SACD and only listen to CDs in my car now. The high resolution digital files like FLAC aren’t much better. SACD was the closest to analog digital ever came.

Since the Bible is quite clear that homosexuality is a sin, the scouts are doing their duty to God. Our Eagle Scouts wear merit badges for rifle shooting, small boat sailing, public speaking, leadership, medicine, electronics and astronomy to name just a small fraction.
  
  Characterizing BSA with “first aid and camping badges!” Well, how very Lassie/Timmie! Mate! Round here, those are Cub Scout badges, well earned by age 7.

  You make my point. You list was just longer than mine. None of those badges have anything to do with bashing LGBT /homophobia or anything of the like.
  
  The policies of the BSA have adopted over time do have much to do with protecting themselves from lawsuits. Based on past experience they are doing what they felt was necessary. In fact they did better than the Roman Catholic Church. Not much better, but better. They tried to hush it all up. What they didn’t do is transfer a bad Boy Scout Master from one troop to another after some counseling, which is essentially what the Catholic Church did.
  
  Would it have been better if they had come clean after each & every incident & publicized it? Maybe not for some of the kids, because some people would have figured out who the kids were & it might have hurt them.
  
  But if the B.S,A, had come clean after each & every incident, where do you think the LGBT movement would be? Not as far along.

My son will be attending this year’s jamboree and I can assure you he has no idea who you are nor will he care that you won’t be performing. Personally I would rather have him listen to someone whose values our family aligns with. For instance, oh I don’t know, maybe Ted Nugent.

  My son has had his eye on the same little blond girl for about four years now. He buys her valentines and sweets. He just turned 12 a week ago so I am more than happy that he is still in the puppy love stage rather than the ogling of pop tarts stage.
  
  As for Ted’s language, I’ve had to ban two very popular cartoons from his (and his sister’s) tv viewing as the story lines keep bringing up cross dressing and transexuals. The f-bomb is the least of my worries and I’m sure Ted could control himself for one concert. I used to work on trading floors and learned to swear like a sailor. But I was able to control my language in front of kids. I’m sure Ted can too.

(After serving 10 years as a Boy Scout camp leader, I decided I couldn’t lie about who I was) and you only lied to yourself.you committed fraud against the BSA.
That about sums it up for me they are liars if you what start your own GAY club ,if not abide by the rules of the club YOU joined they didn’t recruit you ,you went to them.

  I thought the same about her lack of integrity. That’s why I said before that I believe she was only thinking of herself and not the Boy Scouts when she scheduled this gig. The Boy Scouts’ tradition and strong values are so much more worthy of being talked about than some LGBT rainbow coalition B.S. The administration in the Boy Scouts is destroying it.I like the Boy Scouts and my boys like it too but the bureaucracy is not worth it and the administration doesn’t seem to follow the principals and goals they profess to teach our youth.

She has the right to live the lifestyle she chooses, as well as reap the rewards and consequences for her actions, much like I have the right not to be forced to pay for immorality and ignorance (not to mention diseases and death) for that action.
Can’t say I’ve ever heard of this young lady, nor will my niece and nephews, if my wallet has anything to say about it.

  Depending on state law, sure. Sexual orientation is not a federally protected class; it may be protected at the state level.
  
  It also matters whether she had already signed a contract with them; if she had, she’ll likely be sued for breach of contract.

  Yes, and rightfully so. The bigot owners of the farm violated NYS’ public accomdations law. They were in the business of hosting weddings and functions. Then they decided to discriminate against paying customers. They violated the law, they should lose and lose big.

  The signed contract issue is separate from the discrimination issue. Breaching a contract made in good faith is perfectly good grounds for a lawsuit, even if the state has no protection for sexual orientation.

  I notice that ENCINOM and a few others like to throw the word ‘bigot’ around. I’ve never quite understood how disapproval of a behavior makes you a bigot. Is it bigotry if you don’t allow smoking in your home? What if you don’t like to keep company with gamblers or loud-talkers or people who bathe infrequently, does that make you a bigot too? Or is it just sexual behavior that you’re not allowed to condemn? Oh, but we can all despise pedophiles, right? Well, at least today we can.   AVENGERK, I know that I hope the Boy Scouts don’t. Having been a scout leader on and off since the early ’90s I recall the problems the Scouts faced when a large number of the homosexual predators attacked and had their way with the boys. When it all started to come to light there were enough parents who practically sued the Scouts out of existence. That is when the BSA shaped up and developed new rules prohibiting known homosexuals from volunteering as scout leaders. Then the development of the Adirondack temporary shelters that had canvas curtains to cover the large front opening so that a child had a better chance of escape. The requirement for doors on all permanent structures in their camps to open outward and those with lock sets could not lock anybody inside. I’ve helped change a few since none were grandfathered in. That is just a form of putting the fox in charge of the hen house.

  Good question. If he does not bring up his sexual preference than I would be ok. Just as I would be ok with the same scenario if it were a football camp etc.
  
  However we get in to the weeds if he has to show or talk about his personal choice.
  I have known people that were gay and I had no clue. I still like them and will be friends with them as long as they keep it out of my face.
  
  I also would have a problem if he were straight and went around talking about getting it with women and liking big t-i-ts.
  
  It’s all depends on the place and the forum.
  I do agree with any organizations right to ban if they feels like a person does not fit their ideas and or group.
  I would say that a gay group that found me unacceptable because of the fact that I LOVE women and their bodies would be justified in keeping me out of their group.

  Is it natural? No and BSA is not the place for that.
  
  I have a gay sister that I trust with my kids one million times over my straight sister. She keeps it to herself and to be honest I have guy friends that have no clue and think she’s the cats meow and beautiful to boot.
  
  There are good and bad people in every group out there. If you can tell me of one, just one that does not have bad people in the mix than you will have done something that I have never seen done before.

The logic, however, has been shredded. This is NOT a civil rights issue. But if it was, how can “LGBT rights” be a civil rights issue and abortion not be?

May I ask Ms Jester..sorry..Jepsen why she believes adult homosexual males left in seclusion with young boys and adolescent males for extended periods of time is a good idea?
