Editor’s note: The following report was written by the Associated Press. The article is based on a study published in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine. The study utilizes information from the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, an outspoken anti-gun group.
–
CHICAGO (AP) — States with the most gun control laws have the fewest gun-related deaths, according to a study that suggests sheer quantity of measures might make a difference.
But the research leaves many questions unanswered and won’t settle the debate over how policymakers should respond to recent high-profile acts of gun violence.
In the dozen or so states with the most gun control-related laws, far fewer people were shot to death or killed themselves with guns than in the states with the fewest laws, the study found. Overall, states with the most laws had a 42 percent lower gun death rate than states with the least number of laws.
The results are based on an analysis of 2007-2010 gun-related homicides and suicides from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The researchers also used data on gun control measures in all 50 states compiled by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a well-known gun control advocacy group. They compared states by dividing them into four equal-sized groups according to the number of gun laws.
The results were published online Wednesday in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
More than 30,000 people nationwide die from guns every year nationwide, and there’s evidence that gun-related violent crime rates have increased since 2008, a journal editorial noted.
During the four-years studied, there were nearly 122,000 gun deaths, 60 percent of them suicides.
“Our motivation was really to understand what are the interventions that can be done to reduce firearm mortality,” said Dr. Eric Fleegler, the study’s lead author and an emergency department pediatrician and researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital.
He said his study suggests but doesn’t prove that gun laws – or something else – led to fewer gun deaths.
Fleegler is also among hundreds of doctors who have signed a petition urging President Barack Obama and Congress to pass gun safety legislation, a campaign organized by the advocacy group Doctors for America.
Gun rights advocates have argued that strict gun laws have failed to curb high murder rates in some cities, including Chicago and Washington, D.C. Fleegler said his study didn’t examine city-level laws, while gun control advocates have said local laws aren’t as effective when neighboring states have lax laws.
Previous research on the effectiveness of gun laws has had mixed results, and it’s a “very challenging” area to study, said Dr. Daniel Webster, director of the Johns Hopkins Center For Gun Policy. He was not involved in the current study.
The strongest kind of research would require comparisons between states that have dissimilar gun laws but otherwise are nearly identical, “but there isn’t a super nice twin for New Jersey,” for example, a state with strict gun laws, Webster noted.
Fleegler said his study’s conclusions took into account factors also linked with gun violence, including poverty, education levels and race, which vary among the states.
The average annual gun death rate ranged from almost 3 per 100,000 in Hawaii to 18 per 100,000 in Louisiana. Hawaii had 16 gun laws, and along with New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts was among states with the most laws and fewest deaths. States with the fewest laws and most deaths included Alaska, Kentucky, Louisiana and Oklahoma.
But there were outliers: South Dakota, for example, had just two guns laws but few deaths.
Editorial author Dr. Garen Wintemute, director the Violence Prevention Research Program at the University of California, Davis, said the study doesn’t answer which laws, if any, work.
Wintemute said it’s likely that gun control measures are more readily enacted in states with few gun owners – a factor that might have more influence on gun deaths than the number of laws.

Mar. 6, 2013 at 9:46pmFrankly, I don’t give a darn what a government study says, usually these things are not published until they get the results they want from the people doing the research, and civil rights are not about opinions, that are about facts, citizens have rights to bear arms, and there is only one way to infringe on that right?
The government can not even publish jobless numbers with out revising them, and a study is not going to do you a whole lot of good when your life is in danger? These studies are ignoring the numbers coming out of Mexico, which are 400% larger, and they universal gun laws, so you can’t get lost in the weeds discussing state disparity laws?
If gun deaths are the majority caused by suicides, that rounds out to a little over 18,000 per year, or 50 deaths per day? For all 50 states, we have no more than 2 deaths per day, and one of those is likely going to be a suicide? For decades, how many of you have heard a death in the news on a daily basis, yet somehow we need to act now?
Let me put it this way, how many of you visited a state prison lately, to have lunch with the prisoners? Where do you think these people come from Mars? No they come from where we live, work and play, and the only thing that keeps more people from going to these institutions is a good guy with a gun, or the perception there is a good guy around with a gun to make sure people are scared out of their wits to commit a crime?

Mar. 6, 2013 at 10:17pmYour comments are correct. A lot of this information came from the Brady group which is anti-gun. Look at the murder rates in Chicago, New York, and LA, which has some of the most strict gun laws anywhere. Then look at red states and you will find the actual rates are much lower.

Mar. 6, 2013 at 10:42pmGrey eagle.. actually that isn’t true.. I know you guys like to point out Chicago and NY as being crime havens.. but as far as murder rates they rank below many other cities.. Detroit MI, Memphis tenn, St. Louis Mo, Flint MI, Atlanta GA, Cincinnati OH, Cleveland OH, Kansas City MO, Miami FL, New Orleans LA, Newark NJ, Oakland CA, Philadelphia PA, All have higher Murder rates than Chicago. as far as NY you would be surprised! 6.3 deaths per 250,000 people.. this means cities like Charlotte NC, Fort Worth TX, Houston TX, Dallas TX, Columbus OH, Indianapolis, Louisville KY, and Nashville Tenn all have a higher murder rate than NY city.. Though cities are hard to judge because you can just drive a few miles and no longer be under the same strict gun laws.. but if you want to go by state.. the murder rates in red states are higher than blue states.. every year

Mar. 7, 2013 at 1:17amI agree with you entirely, Media-bias.
These statistics “compiled” by the Brady campaign are a red herring. This is an attempt to drag the conversation sideways into the area of gun safety. And just to look at that briefly, even these staunch gun control advocates show clear reluctance to assign certainty to their results. This suggests to me that there is a discoverable flaw that they fear might come out.
But to support Media-bias’ main point; this arguement is about the Constitution plain and simple.
Do Americans have the right to own and bear arms, or do they not?
Does the legal precedent of Americans having the right to own and bear commonly and usually obtainable firearms still apply, or does it not?
The above arguement presented via Associated Press is as relevant to gun ownership as the road toll is to car ownership.

Methinks you are a troll seeing your other comments across Blaze….perhaps a paid one for the Dark Lord himself, Commander Zero. We have been finding several under the bridges of conservative sites lately. Though, you are an unusually polite and well spoken minion of evile. So in the event you are really just a marshmallowy soft “feeler” type, or perhaps a child naive enough to swallow twisted lies from two of the most anti-gun cabals in the US, (Brady Center-aka Handgun Control, and JAMA which has been rabid anti-gunners since the 1950′s and comprised/run by politically connected big city NYC and Chicago MD’s) ….my scathing riposte.
MEXICO! Guns verboten except for the wealthy and politically loyal as in NYC and Chicago….and it has been a shooting gallery for the last 200 years. All those pesky guns slipping back across the Rio Grande in the empty containers they send illegals across in you say? HONDURAS! EL SALVADOR! NICARAGUA! VENEZUELA! COLUMBIA! Same story line. Same story ending. Guns verboten…..lotsa dead peons overlorded by insider cleptocracies. Sounds like Chicago!
Other uncomfortable facts….gun washed Japanese Americans have a LOWER gun crime or suicide rate than Japanese Japanese! Our Mexicans (who are 2x more violent than white Jethro’s like me) have a lower criminal use of guns rate than their still dry backed southern cousins! Heckipoo….US blacks with a 4x Jethro kill rate are still better than their African stay at home count

Mar. 7, 2013 at 1:22pmAmen. Who cares what studies have been conducted. Activist Judges started using studies instead of adhering to the Constitution around the turn of the 20th century (maybe even a little before that). The 2nd Amendment clearly states, “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”. It doesn’t say, “….unless a study says that is bad.”. Look, all the studies that needed to be had were done by our forefathers when they drafted the Constitution. They studied failed societies and empires and they knew that in order for a people not to be enslaved they need a means of self defense. It is a natural right and it is not to be infringed upon. Are there consequences, sure. If you have a Godless public and evil in the world, someone will always use specific means to kill anyone else. What you don’t want is a government capable of enslaving its people because they are not armed to protect themselves (i.e. Hitler’s Germany, Stalins Soviet Union, Mao’s China, Pharoh’s egypt and the jews, American black slaves, etc. etc. etc.).. What are the politicians afraid of? That is the question you should be asking.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 5:00pmWhilst I do not know if @Keatonc33′s statistics are correct, I believe the statistics will show that poverty is a huge factor in cities with high crime and murder rates. Guns are merely a tool these impoverished people are using to try and climb out of the hole they find themselves in. I don’t know the answer, and it certainly isn’t to give a pass to these criminal types, but perhaps something to help teach them the self-worth of working hard to climb out of their situation would be good. Unfortunately, in order to do that, we need a president and administration who, instead of dividing We the People, truly wants to unite us and help us work together, take care of our neighbors, and live ‘the Golden Rule’. The absolute ONLY way that will ever come about is enough people getting involved, speaking out, and teaching by action. I don’t see that happening soon with all the laziness, the selfishness and the refusal of most people to get involved short of voicing opinions on computer sites.
Additionally, to try and associate our gun violence with that of Mexico is simply not possible. There are too many differences between Mexico and the US, so that comparison is dishonest.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 12:07pmWell Keaton, I’ll explain that one. CRIMINALS by definition (something the libs and progressives will never understand) DO NOT FOLLOW THE LAW TO BEGIN WITH. So they will get guns from those that bring them over the boarder, or smuggle them in in other fashions, they will steal them from those that legally purchased them and so on, so NO NEW LAWS OR RESTRICTIONS PLACED ON LAW ABIDING CITIZENS WILL DO ANYTHING TO STOP, SLOW DOWN, OR HINDER IN ANY FASHION A CRIMINAL’S ABILITY TO GET A GUN.
Now onto the law abiding citizens. How will it hurt them. First, a universal background check WILL LEAD TO A UNIVERSAL REGISTRY. As history has proven, universal gun registries are used to CONFISCATE LAWFULLY OBTAINED FIREARMS. Hmm, so there is hurt number one. Number two, more laws, restriction, and regulations will make guns and ammunition more expensive than it already is, so that hurts the pocket book. Now if those don’t make any sense, then once a gun confiscation would happen, who would be the most vulnerable?? The LAW ABIDING CITIZEN. Why?? Because CRIMINALS WILL NOT FOLLOW THE LAW. Get it?? Probably not, your kind never does.

A gun may have been the tool used but it possesed neither motive, character, or influence to commit the act.
Without a gun the 60% of the 122,000 deaths quoted would still have occured (e.g. Japan has the strictest gun laws of any industrialized nation and also has on of the highest suicide rates per capita).
The study was done to support a pre-determined outcome…

Mar. 6, 2013 at 9:29pmI don’t think suicides should be included in those stats for any reason. Take out the 60% that represents suicides and what does that do to their bogus claims.
Without getting into the causes of suicides except that some degree of mental illness may be involved, suicides are not crimes against other people. It is the mental illness aspects that should be investigated and reported on, not the guns themselves, the way the stats are being drudged up and juggled are ridiculous and meaningless.
Suicides may be more easily facilitated using a gun but there are many other ways for one to kill oneself. In fact, suicide isn’t even illegal I don’t think. How could it be? If you were to commit suicide what are they going to do to you? Facilitating one’s suicide is the crime and even that should be reconsidered. If people want to kill/shoot themselves let ‘em do it.
Our government trying to prevent one from committing suicide is just like our government telling us we can’t buy a 36 ounce cup of soda, or telling us how much of what out kids can eat at school, or telling a restaurant they have to reduce their food’s calorie content.
The suicide numbers are out of place and don’t belong in the baseless gatherings of so-called statistics.

A comparison of just the number of laws vs. the number of gun deaths leaves out HUGE, MASSIVE variables; economic status, population who actually own firearms, education level, overall crime rate that doesn’t include guns, etc. How this even made it passed the peer-review stage is beyond me – but then again JAMA is left leaning and surely gave this a bit of a pass…not surprising at all. Mar. 6, 2013 at 9:25pmWell, now lets give this report the benefit of the doubt. And using your example of Chicago, I can see where JAMA came to this conclusion. Chicago is rift with gangs. When an armed robbery occurs, there are usually more than one robber. One who jacks the victom, the other(s) who keep watch. The victom, is probably unarmed (since there is gun-control and the victom can’t buy a weapon), while the robber(s) are armed because they got their weapons illegally. So, lets say there are two robbers, and one victom. The victom gets shot because he can’t even begin to TRY to defend himself with his own weapon. So there is only 1 death….the victom. But, if the victom was armed, there is a chance he/she could have pulled his weapon and shot two robbers. Therefore, the numbers in JAMA add up!
Here’s a video that walks through how gangs in Chicago, Atlanta, etc etc operate…..it will open your eyes:
