A passionate Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) conducted an old-fashioned filibuster on the Senate floor Wednesday to halt the nomination of President Barack Obama’s CIA director nominee John Brennan. But really, his filibuster was about the constitutional concerns surrounding potential drone strikes on Americans on U.S. soil.

Paul began his filibuster by informing the Senate he would filibuster all day if he had to, saying “I will speak until I can no longer speak.” He said he would gladly end the filibuster when Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder clarify that they will not use drone strikes on non-combatants in the U.S.

But the Kentucky Senator had several other memorable quotes throughout the day. Here are some of his best lines from Wednesday’s filibuster, which finally came to a close at around 12:30 a.m. — nearly 13 hours after it began.

On vague wording of drone strike criteria: “Are you going to just drop a hellfire missile on Jane Fonda? Are you going to drop a missile on Kent State?” He later added, “That’s gobbledygook.”

On Obama’s civil liberties flip-flop: “I think its also safe to say that Barack Obama of 2007 would be right down here with me arguing against this drone-strike program if he were in the Senate.”

On John Brennan: “I have hounded and hounded and hounded him… Only after yanking his chain… does he say he’s going to obey the law. We should be alarmed by that.”

On the Constitution and the law: “I’m not saying that anyone is Hitler, don’t misunderstand me. But what I am saying that is…when a democracy gets it wrong, you want the law to be in place.”

Taking a stand: “I have allowed the president to pick his political appointees…But I will not sit quietly and let him shred the Constitution.”

On his colleagues in the Senate: “If there were an ounce of courage in this body I would be joined by other senators… saying they will not tolerate this.”

On White House “kill list”: “The people on the list might be me.”

On Obama: “He was elected by a majority, but the majority doesn’t get to decide who we execute.”

On making a point: “This will be a blip in his nomination process. But I hope people will see it as an argument for how important our rights are.”

On Congress: “Nothing ever happens around here.”

At around 8:09 p.m. ET, Paul asked Americans, “Are you so afraid that you are willing to trade your freedom for security?”

      “God Bless Rand…….Once the conservatives have the house then we can use the drones to hunt for marijuana salesmen…Liberals have no idea how many rights they are giving up right now.” first off, i find it interesting that you would consider an individuals choice to consume a natural product, thats not addictive, has never killed a person and has few negative effects, not a right. and secondly Rand Paul isn’t your guy if you want tough marijuana laws. being as he has said he doesn’t think it should be a federal issue and is in favor of shortening drug related prison sentences and is in favor of abolishing the mandatory minimum sentence for marijuana possession.

      You are missing the point entirely, which is that once such arbitrary authority is codified or endorsed in any manner, it will endure. Therefore, when the party you don’t like which wants to do things you disagree with takes control, the drone strike option will be waiting.

      Pretty sure that RIDE was being sarcastic to make a point.

      That point being that vesting enormous authority (like killing US Citizens on our soil w/o a trial) is dangerous even if you like the guy who’s doing it. It’s dangerous because someone else might come along and abuse that power.

      To use the example I think RIDE was trying to make: If we give the power to kill US citizens who are not fighting against the country, on our own soil and without a trial to this President, even if he never dreams of using the power, that power will carry on to the next President and the next and the next.

      Somewhere down the line someone who gets elected might abuse the power to, as RIDE says, start raining Hellfire missiles down on marijuana growers (or anyone else he/she doesn’t like).

      We cannot always be guaranteed of an informed statesman.

      IMHO, we should not invest power in the President if we would be cautious to do it if the guy was from the other side of the aisle.

      If a liberal cannot say 100% that they would be comfortable with George W. Bush having this power, then they have to admit that Obama shouldn’t have it either. If they can’t admit that, they have mental issues.

      SAS…I totally agree.

      Here is a real life example of how even so-called educated people can’t think things through. In fall ’08, Pr. Bush signed the CPSIA, which banned lead content in imported toys, etc. Environmentalists (wanting to end off-road riding) were able to insert lang. that prohibited anyone under 12 y/o from purchasing an off-road vehicle due to lead in certain engine parts, as well as the battery, even though to anyone’s knowledge, no kid had ever been harmed by either.

      My Br-in-law, who thinks motorcycles are evil, agreed with that laws language. Nothing I said could change his mind. “I don’t think kids under 12 should be able to ride a dirt-bike, he said.”

      I then said to him…”how about environmentalists decide that your Chevy Avalanche is too wasteful on gas, and decide that because of that wastefulness, that to contiunue to drive it, your registration fee will now be $1,500 per year.” He didn’t understand that point, even with his Masters degree. He is, of course, a very hard-headed, self-righteous individual to begin with.
      He just did not get that when some decide they don’t like what you do, and take your right to do it away, that they could also take away his right to do certain things.

      Seems to me that your better off when you keep your elected representation in check by opposing things they do you disagree with them. Do you trust your own ideology or the person sitting in the seat to espouse that ideology? We have enough problems with the cult of personality with President Obama’s blind support.     At one point Paul offered a non binding resolution that had two parts; One, that the President would aknowledge that it would be unconstitutional to kill a non-combatent American citizen on our soil and two that the president and Holder would clarify the threshold under which they saw the use of drones against a citizen as being constitutional.

    The “other side” as he put it indicated that they would NOT support the non-binding resolution. Followed shortly by Dick Durbin stating that they would be holding their own hearings to discuss the drone matter.

    They are planning on commandeering this issue for their own benefit. The Republican Party better wake up or they will find themselves extinct.

      RJJINGADSDEN@ You are noting one of the biggest differences between the Left and the Right. The Left are, by their very nature, collectivists…the Right are independent minded to a fault. The Left vote as one…the Right vote personal prospective.
      The irony is that, according to polls, as individuals, the majority of people believe this country is going in the wrong direction…and yet, when it comes to voting, the Left will always unite behind the left wing Democrat…the Right will never be happy with any particular candidate. It is my own prospective that this speaks well of the Right, as individuals, and very poorly of the Left. But I really think it is, in fact, the strength of the Left, their mindless collectivism.. . and the weakness of the Right..their unwillingness to accept anything less than their own personal principals.

      SOY, In a number of interviews Rand has stated that he is his own man and not a carbon copy of his father. He has often pointed out that has many differing views than his father. So far, I like Rand very much. Naturally, I don’t agree with him 100%. But, would never expect to do that with anybody. Right now, I have my eye this man with a lot of respect for him. As long as he does not mimic his Dad, he may very well have my vote in the future. But, right now it is too early to tell.

      In a number of posts i have stated the differences between rand and ron. rand paul is more of a politician and willing to carry republican water. Nobody is saying rand is exactly like ron – but your limited understanding of our position makes it hard to grasp…..Even though rand paul differs from ron paul, rand paul is so much different than the usual politician that he is basically in ron paul territory. There are a few of them in washington but not many

      Yes, this is the same Rand Paul who committed an incredible act of stupidity that endangers the lives of every citizen in this nation by confirming Hagel.
      This is also the man who had the guts to stand up (but not to follow through) againt Brennan and our current treasonous government’s trashing of what was the last vestige of the constitutional rights which citizens of the United States used to have.

      His stupidity in the first act does not negate the integrity and courage of the second.

      The courage shown in the second act in no way excuses the stupidity of the first.

      Most people here understand that you are supposed to support someone when they are doing something that is right, and you fight against them and call them out when they are doing something that is wrong.

      Should Mr. Obama ever do anything that is worthy of praise, after I get over the shock, I will give him credit for doing the right thing. This will not amount to a sudden vote of approval for his treason.

      This is not called “flip-fliopping” (as you so eloquently put it), this is by definition steadfastness and integrity.

    What is alarming is Mr. Paul’s aloneness. Where are his constituents who stand for America? Where are the kindred voices, or is Paul thought to be a monster?

    He brings excellent facts and grave concern with unequalled passion, rarely seen in high places. As he said, maybe HE is on the hit list, (for a strike) maybe you, thus his concern.

    The longer he speaks, the more embarrassed the senators should be, this is not political as his opponents say, this is a core principle of right and wrong. By the way, if GOd was giving a speech, he would be voted off the island also, so be careful in your criticism of Dr. Paul.

    I have been watching since the beginning. I hope there are many more people like me. This needs to be seen and heard.

    I did call, e-mail, and posted on my senators facebook page. I don’t know if I have been this angry at Senator Bob Corker… seems he has no opinion on the filibuster. Seems to me, that is an opinion. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

      Unless Corker goes on the floor and states that he threw food at Obama until he said he wouldn’t kill Americans on U.S. soil, he is gonna have hell to pay at the next town meeting. I can’t believe this. Rumor around these parts is that Corker was thinking of running for president next time around. ~ Good luck Corker, hope you can prove to the people of other states you are a good choice, right now you would lose your own state. Pathetic!

    I’m taking bets as too how many Senators and Congressmen, and those in the media, will blame Paul for not reaching “across the aisle”. We all remember how the media especially, praised John McCain for doing so. He also became a hero among the RINOS. history tells us how he was rewarded for that. During his campaign for the presidential election, the very same media who praised him for being a “maverick”, jumped on the lie that he was having an affair with a female lobbyist. I can only imagine what the media will attempt too do to Paul.

    Those 2 say it all for me. A mere rejection from a seat doesn’t cut it. We DEEPLY need some impeachments and imprisonments for treason if we’re to save this country. Why is that not happening? We’re running out of cheeks to turn.

    Everyone should listen to what is being said. Get in your congressman and senators faces – state your positions and don’t back down. I live in NY and whenever possible call, email and when they allow it – show up at their meetings. More people need to be vocal
