CSCOPE: Exposing the Nation’s Most Controversial Public School Curriculum System
In February, Texas announced that the state, along with the Texas Education Service Center Curriculum (TESCCC,) would enact major changes to the controversial curriculum management system dubbed CSCOPE. The system received a litany of complaints from faculty members and parents alike concerning its lack of transparency (parents were allegedly not permitted to review lesson-plans), lack of oversight from the State Board of Education, and for allegedly imposing oppressive working conditions for faculty members.
CSCOPE was created so that teachers could frame their year around teaching points required by the state. Lessons, which are written by CSCOPE staff and current and former teachers, can be updated and delivered online, making it more cost-effective than standard textbooks.
To note just how off-color some of the CSCOPE curriculum is, consider that the Texas CSCOPE Review, an independent watchdog group, uncovered an out-of-date, optional CSCOPE lesson-plan on terrorism — βWorld History Unit 12 Lesson 07″ — which allegedly likens the Boston Tea Party to βan act of terrorism.β
The system also recently asked students to design a flag for a new socialist nation.
To glean greater insight, Glenn Beck invited special guests David Barton and Pat Gray, along with teachers Mary Bowen, Stan Hartzler and Texas State Sen. Dan Patrick to discuss what is truly going on within their state’s education system.
Barton explained that CSCOPE is referred to as “instructional material” and not “curriculum,” therefore is not subject to regulation by the State Board of Education. The historian alsoΒ brought in artifacts of Texas public school curriculum to showcase just how different it is today and to mark, year-by-year, the increasing application of political correctness in lesson plans.
Using a chart, Barton documented and mapped out core CSCOPE material, which eliminatesΒ national values, Americanism or rather, American exceptionalism, the study of federalism and majority rule (the core of our constitution) along with patriotic symbols like the Liberty Bell. Christopher Columbus, Rosh Hashanah and Christmas are all relegated to the dustbin along with American militaryΒ history. Equality and a belief in justice is replaced by “fairness” and instruction on American propaganda and imperialism.
Disturbingly, Beck and Barton noted that the worst is yet to come. Showcasing a lesson plan for grades 1-3, Barton revealed CSCOPE’s list of “heroes,” which comprises a dozen secular progressives and only three conservatives or political moderates.
According to a previous report from TheBlaze, teachers complained that they were expected to deliver the curriculum verbatim and only on days allotted by the CSCOPE lesson plan. Even if students were unable to absorb the lesson, teachers were allegedly directed to progress to the next lesson regardless. TheBlaze also reported that teachers were “asked to sign a contract that would prevent them from revealing what was in the CSCOPE lessons or face civil and criminal penalties.”
The controversial program’s website states that CSCOPE is a comprehensive online curriculum management system developed and owned by the Texas Education Service Center Curriculum Collaborative (TESCCC), a consortium composed of the 20 ESCs in the state.”Β It goes on to explain that the CSCOPE system provides curriculum framework for grades kindergarten through 12 across a broad range of subject areas.
The online description might raise red flags for some when it states that the CSCOPE content is regularly updated based on, among other criteria, “feedback collected through various stakeholder groups in the collaborative, including individual teacher submissions through the CSCOPE website and the School District Advisory Committee, comprised of district representatives from all participating regions of the state.”
What, or rather who, comprises CSCOPE’s collaborative and stakeholder groups? That question and a myriad others are what critics hope to get to the bottom of.
But while the groups to which CSCOPE appearsΒ relativelyΒ beholden may sound alarms for critics, the actual researchers CSCOPE credits with providing the basis for itsΒ curriculum seem to be formidable industry veterans by and large. Those educators includeΒ Robert Marzano, Fenwick English, John Crain, Heidi Hayes Jacobs, Grant Wiggins, Jay McTighe, H. Lynn Erickson, and James Barufaldi.
CSCOPE has been adopted by some 75 percent of Texas schools and the aim was to implement a national adoption of the management system. However, according to some education blogs,Β Common Core Standards sought to purchase CSCOP as a national curriculum standard. It is by far and away, one of the more hotly contested topics in the current education debate and much mystery still remains as to CSCOPE’s core tenets.
Beck noted that secular progressivism, further, the notion of communal life and collectivism, is at the system’s core. Other points of contention concerning CSCOPE curriculum include lesson-plans positing that Christopher Columbus was an “eco-warrior” and, whenΒ referringΒ to the famed explorer’s journal, all references to God and Christendom were removed.
Students are also posed with hypothetical scenarios concerning historical figures and have allegedly been asked to take a position on population growth. Students were even subject to a lesson framed around the idea that “Christianity was a cult,” Beck noted.
CSCOPE’s director, Wade Labay has defended his curriculum and maintained that controversy has stemmed from misconceptions.” For instance, he said that framing the Boston Tea Party as an act of terrorism was merely one teacher’s way to engage students in the day’s lesson.
State Sen. Patrick, who chairs the Senate Education Committee, has led the CSCOPE hearings, bringing the controversial system to public light. He pushed CSCOPE to allow parents to view curriculum and to lift Β gag-orders on teachers. Patrick explained his experience bringing CSCOPE to task and revealed what he believes is in store for his state.
Hartzler, who taught math for nearly four decades, retired early because of CSCOPE. He said that he was written nearly a dozen times for not following the system’s lesson plan and maintains that CSCOPE is dumbing-down American students. He said he tried his best to follow the lesson plans, but simply could not.
Bowen, who is currently forced to use CSCOPE in her school district, feels that schools are now more like factories that send children out into the real world from an assembly-line that has not even given them the basics. She spoke to Beck despite the fact that CSCOPE had set up disciplinary consequences for doing so.
Bowen said that the lessons were mediocre at best, often “riddled with errors” and that “tests were invalid.”
“There’s tremendousΒ coercion. It’s an incrediblyΒ oppressiveΒ environment.” She added that there have been teachers who were fired for speaking out to the school board.
Bowen also explained that teachers spend “one out of every five” days testing students, and that those tests provide data for the government’s use.
When asked what they tell parents who are inquisitive about their child’s lesson-plans, Hartzler said he violated his gag-order “right away.” He said he showed the parents why the students were struggling and where they should go from that point on.
Beck said that President Obama will look to move forward with implementing CSCOPE or such systems within a short time-frame. The panel said concerned Americans should send letters to the Attorney General and that emergency legislation should be enacted to help teachers push back.
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isnβt really about controlling guns at all; itβs about controlling us. Posted on March 8, 2013 at 1:07amAs stated herein, this system does not need modified, it needs scraped in its entirety, and those that designed and are leading its implementation at the very least need fired and may well need to be jailed. Absolutely unbelievable. If the Gablers were still alive in Texas, they would be calling out the National Guard to have the derelicts and degenerates that designed this program physically removed.
The Gablers were gentle but firmly committed in the war against text book and history revisionism, but I’m not sure they could have held their peace here, and I would not blame them one bit. This designed surgical operation by the progressive elitists is nothing short of criminality and treason.

Posted on March 8, 2013 at 10:16amThis kind of propaganda has been taught in the Texas school system when Iwas a kid.
For example, just one bit of propaganda decried that the pilgrims cheated the indians out of the land they bought from them, even though it is common knowledge that the indians not only did not own the land they sold they didn’t live on it either, and one tribe sold the land six different times to different pilgrim groups.
It’s all part of a hate America campaign that’s been going on for so many years much of it is so embeded in the system any kid going to school nowadays is getting programmed to hate himself and white people in general, their history, values, and accomplishments……. not educated in factual matters.
Even as a kid I wouldn’t buy what they were trying to get me to believe, and it wasn’t until I was in high school that I began to read history on my own that I was able to learn th truth.
Many of the colleges and universities are just as bad. It’s amazing that this kind of thing is allowed to continue.
What is even more surprising is that people spewing this hatred are still walking around on two feet.

Posted on March 8, 2013 at 1:57pmI am very much in favor of homeschooling having been a h.s. parent myself with our 3 children. However, with young married couples and/or single moms it is very difficult these days for them to accomplish this when they have to work just to support their families. But I believe that those who want to leave the public schools could easily start up co-ops among their friends or family and take turns with various subjects or alternate days to be responsible for teaching/ doing field trips, etc. This is a great time for all patriots to group together to bring about a New and better America.
When I began homeschooling, at the encouragement of a friend, I felt totally inadequate. With support from friends who have attempted and succeeded at this, a parent can accomplish teaching their children easily. There are many great homeschool resources and supportive help out there today. Be brave and you will find it’s actually quite nice to spend more time with your children.

You must be quite a bit younger than I am. The only ‘progressive’ stuff I remember from school (here in TEXAS) was when Earth Day first came about. That’s it. Now I’ve returned after spending my entire adult life being moved around the country, and I see my old high school with the phrase, “IB WORLD SCHOOL” proudly emblazoned on the building next to it’s name. After doing my research, I’ve discovered the Globalist tentacles are in deep. I just found out there was a rep from Al Jazeera welcomed into one of our local schools, under the guise of a foreign language class for advanced students. The most pointed propaganda is directed at our best & brightest kids. Between the IB (International Baccalaureate), CSCOPE and The World Affairs Council…dear God, we’ve got alot of work to do.
Look up your local school district. See if they have the IB programming. My ISD had it under a program they called The EDGE. You’ll have to dig. That’s where the World Affairs Council fits in. (you’ll be surprised to find one–or two– offices in your area. I was.) You’ll have a more difficult time finding out about CSCOPE…or bho’s COMMON CORE.
Get to work! Alert your neighbors EVEN IF THEY DON’T HAVE KIDS–THEY STILL HAVE A VOTE! (sheesh! *I* don’t have kids, but *I* care about this issue because this is how our country is being rotted from the inside.) NOW GET BUSY BEFORE EVERY AMERICAN CHILD BECOMES NOTHING BUT A GOOD LITTLE GLOBAL CITIZE

umm…not to be mean but first, learn to spell and learn some history. We have already had a 2nd Continental Congress, they wrote the Declaration of Indpendence and were the ones in power during the Revolutionary War. The 1st Continental Congress was responsible for the original letters of redress to King George and sending of Franklin to Parliament to lobby for the repel of the Stamp Act and previous taxes and grievances.
If you were talking about a 2nd Constitutional Convention…that would be BAD Ray….the Progressives could literally REMAKE the entire country at one time by taking over the convention. They would only need a simple majority because in a Constitutional Convention, the 50 States would all send reps to the convention, propose amendments, and if they were passed, they become immediate. No ratification necessary and no Congress or President involved. So, they could literal propose the same thing that happened in the 1st Constitutional Convention, which is the complete throwing out of the current constitution – at that time the Articles of Confederation….

You would be surprised at how many teachers are with you already…especially in the math and science fields. there might be differences here and there but even some of the most liberal teachers want to be left alone to teach how they see fit and think all this State and Fed mandated curriculum is just crap…
the problem is the “new” teachers…those right out of college and their credential programs…they have been “programmed” to think this central planning garbage is how education is supposed to work… the old, 50 or 60 year old, hippie liberal teacher might spout off commie crap in their class but they are still “anti-establishment” minded enough to want to be left alone by the State and Fed and are often the loudest voices AGAINST centrally planned testing and education….
in math and science, where logic is power and truth is absolute, you not only get many more conservatives but realists and pragmatists as well…the idealist tends to teach K-5 much more than grades 6-12 where you have to specialize in one discipline. and again, even if they are lefties and commies at heart, it is hard to teach math or science from a communist point of view…well, Bio has the enviro-nazi elements..but Chem, Physics, ESS, and the like are kinda not open to interpretation…
but I get your meaning…I have seen and heard openly marxist statements from many in the English and History dept. at all schools I have taught at…

My wife and I are right in the middle of this crap right now.
I was at the HS this morning asking why they were teaching my daughter the Five Pillars of Islam, with no mention of the Ten Commandments, God or Jesus. I was met with no answers to my questions other than its in the curriculum and we have to teach it. Public school Free Lunch Slave administrators & teachers protecting their pay checks are traitors not only to their students but this country. As parents we need to let our voices be heard loud and clear that this kind of trash teaching will not be accepted. Teach them about other cultures & religions but don’t place them above this country and the Christian values this country was founded upon.

where you at? north of big D here…
and, if you check many similar posts regarding the stories on education here, you will find that I am one of those many on here are trying to paint as traitors…over generalizations are dangerous no matter who they are directed at….
as an educator by choice, scientist by degree and God given aptitude, Constitutionalist by belief… I take great offense to the teacher bashing….yes 80% might self identify as left of center, but my father would as well.. a Kennedy Democrat his whole life…social conservative, even fiscally conservative on 90% of issues outside of education…his career for 35 years…there are MANY like him across this nation…
the problem is that his generation is gone or going….the “new” crop of teachers replacing them, those with less than 5 years on the job…are TRUE believers in the Leary, Mann, Progressive ideals of centrally planned education and government…they are the goose-stepping marxists that want to “re-educate” everyone with their “transformed” history, English, science, and math.
even the liberal hippie teacher of old was “anti-establishment” and anti-central planning….they might have been a closet commie or openly…but they wanted NOTHING to do with centrally planned government run education.
it is the commie bureaucrats that see this new guard as their army and chance to take over completely and forever…

i have been high school math and science for 14 years now…hated being in CA and forced to pay union dues even if I didn’t want too….voted NO on everything the union wanted just out of spite….
people always say “teachers” are the problem..but they should start checking themselves and saying “teacher unions”….teachers might lean left as a whole but unions are Marxist to the core.. in all professions….
auto workers, construction, longshoremen,…good blue collar hard working men and women that either don’t pay attention or don’t have the time or will to fight the union bosses that claim to speak for everyone but maybe only have 55% backing….
there is a reason that the mafia bosses of the 20-40′s decided to go straight and took over the unions in the 50-60′s….more money, more power, less risk, and they were LEGITIMATE to a degree and now the politicians could OPENLY side with them and now seem like crooks themselves…but protectors of the working class….

Please list the options where I pay for my own kids and no one else’s. THAT is definition of “another option” and what makes public education a monopoly. It’s the only place my tax dollars go.
Cause I’ve been paying into the “system” since 1989 when I first inherited my parent’s house and used NONE of the cash I was paying in, even with my own kids whom I homeschool.
Double paying for education, especially crappy education with no say of curriculum, is not “another option”.

Posted on March 8, 2013 at 9:49amKeaton, you ever heard of a “government” monopoly. Tell me something, in a free market (that’s a volutaryist market) how could a monopoly even form? The reason the public gov’t run school system is a monopoly, is because the gov’t is backed up by force. That means they use violence and the threat of violence to achieve their goals. That’s the problem. Not only is the public school system a monopoly, but government has monopoly on something else–and that’s a monopoly on violence.
Looks like you were indoctrinated to the core in a public school, taught to be a good little proper subject of the state–and one who condones violence. You’re a hypocrit if you have ever attended an anti-war “peace, love, and free sex” hippy rally especially when you condone an increasingly violent state, as long as that violence is directed towards people you hate.

1) i know you are a troll and only can type what is approved by the Ministry of Information and Thought Control but please…sometimes you should just shut up…
2) a corporate monopoly does not have to be just one choice…if there is collusion and price fixing then, as many always try and say about the oil companies, there can be a monopoly on an industry. hence, Teddy Roosevelt becoming the “trust buster” at the turn of the century and railing against the steel, oil, and banking industries here in the USA.
3) a government monopoly results when the government, either directly or indirectly restricts the choices of the citizens to only those “approved” entities either through the threat of force, finances, or regulations. in the realm of education, the government does all three. the DoEd controls 8.5% of the budget of every school district in America that did not opt-out when the DoEd was created (very few did because they saw free money). the DoEd controls the attendance of students through the Compulsory Education Acts of all States by 1918, upheld by the SCOTUS in 1925, forcing all students to be in a school until age 16 nationally. Not doing so can result it child confiscation and parent confinement and fine. When the DoEd was forced, they took over enforcement from the States of compulsory attendance, all States are required to verify to the DoEd student attendance in order to receive funding.

@Keaton
so recap…the DoEd controls funding to the States and requires parents, through the State laws, to have their children involved in a school curriculum of some type, up until age 16. Homeschooling, private, and charter is permitted but even if you don’t have children, your taxes are diverted to the public schools ONLY…note, some charter schools are public and receive funds, thus are beholden to the DoEd.
last…since 1978, the DoEd has been increasingly intrusive, through acts of Congress and Presidential EO, into what and how the State’s teach, even to the point of creating “national standards” that all States are required to meet or surpass and prove, through “standardized testing” that they are meeting and surpassing those standards.
so another plain English recap for you..since you are a public school product and thus might have a hard time understanding math, logic, and English on a 9th grade or higher level..(average college student enters college with 9th grade ability and leaves with 11th grade ability, even after 4 years of college – 17 years of schooling)
DoEd controls the States which control the districts which control the schools through threat of punishment and removal of funding, parents with threat of criminal action, and teachers through threat of firing if they do not perform up to the “national standards”… that is a MONOPOLY on Education…

Now I’ve returned after spending my entire adult life being moved around the country, I see my old high school with the phrase, “IB WORLD SCHOOL” proudly emblazoned on the building next to it’s name. After doing my research, I’ve discovered the Globalist tentacles are in deep. I just found out there was a rep from Al Jazeera welcomed into one of our local schools, under the guise of a foreign language class for advanced students (IB). The most pointed propaganda is directed at our best & brightest kids. Between the IB (International Baccalaureate), CSCOPE and The World Affairs Council…dear God, we’ve got alot of work to do.

What did Ms Obama say about us having to move to another place and change our history? Yep! When this president said he wanted to fundamentally transform America what did we think he really meant?
When the multiculture is sitting there in the classrooms across America and the teachers are still for the most part Anglos and even the children with the exception of our newcomers, how do you think they are going to FEEL about teaching how Whites dominated everything in the US but oh by the way your welcome?
They (the leftist teachers) are not COMFORTABLE teaching American (REAL) history because that history involves White accomplishments, victories, inventions and the like….teaching these things is like sticking a hot poker in the eye of the newcomers sooooo they must water it down first without causing too much alarm and then removing it altogether. This is how we get the Great Poccahantas and so on.
once history is revised and this is taught, it will take a generation to set the record straight about who did what in this country. Its all about making everyone FEEL all INCLUSIVE. Well I’m sorry that some were not part of the great American experience but its not too late to join the party…or maybe it is, but I digress, First we have to stop with all this racial divisions in schools for the sake of making everyones race FEEL comfortable with being in this country. Posted on March 8, 2013 at 4:04pmTime2 and Leftist Clowns- I do wish you would stop insulting libertarians. Without libertarians you won’t win one more election. Even if you don’t agree with Ron Paul you have to admit he has good ideas. The ideas meaning he wants to follow the constitution. That’s not exactly radical and that’s the thing you two seem to oppose so I’m thoroughly confused. Like I said before here, I’m a conservative libertarian, a little of both. Even so, libertarians have many things right such as small government so I do not understand where you guys start going off on the man since he has great ideas. Not the least of which is taking away wasteful spending programs.

So, he does not have too much time to post. I hope that he has more time in the near future. Thank God that his courses for the most part are not taught by the typical left wing indoctrination nut. Yeah, its cool to sign on and see my son here. He is familiar with you somewhat. He was sitting here with me that night you and I had some fun with Do The Lurch. Will say hi, but if you happen to available when he is on tell him yourself. He’ll remember you. I played him that link to the song Time too. Go take an Alka Seltzer, settle down and shake it off. Also, believe me, I do not in any way try to occupy space in your head. That is simply your delusion. Furthermore, stop tossing accusations when I am chatting with a friend and answering his questions. Yeah, how about it? There are some people here that I don’t care much for, while there are some who I really, really do like. Consider yourself somewhere in the slightly lower middle. Sometimes you are tolerable, unlike tonight. LOL, sometimes you are like such a little school kid where I can say the slightest thing, and you come across as though I had just yelled “made you look!” My other reference was that TIME mentioned you above, and here you zero in. Seriously, chill out, and remove the Ron Paul tin cap before you give yourself a stroke. Don’t you even see how worked up you get yourself making it so easy for some others and myself to play with you? Stop setting yourself up.
