Citing a new letter from Attorney General Eric Holder, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney on Thursday responded to Kentucky Senator Rand Paul’s question regarding the White House and its stance on the use of drones on U.S. citizens.
“Does the president have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on an American soil,” said Carney, reading Holder’s letter. “The answer is no.’”
Here’s Holder’s letter:
However, Carney added that “if the United States were under attack, there were an imminent threat [emphasis added],” then the president would have the authority to order military action to repel said threat.
So, although Holder’s response to Sen. Paul’s is a flat “No,” it sounds like we still haven’t escaped “imminent threat vs. immediate threat” purgatory.
Still, regardless of the letter’s brevity and the fact that Sens. Lindsay Graham and John McCain characterized Sen. Paul’s question as “ridiculous,” the fact that his filibuster pushed the White House into issuing an official response means one thing: The freshman senator gets results.
–
UPDATE: Following the release of Holder’s letter, Sen. Paul said that he is satisfied with the White House’s response and that he will end his objection to the nomination of John Brennan as director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
“We’ll hold a vote as soon as people want to,” he said, adding that he was “quite happy with the answer.”
“I’m disappointed it took a month and a half and a root canal to get it,” he added, “but we did get the answer.”
Later, on the Senate floor, Sen. Paul addressed Holder’s letter: “So it has taken a while, but we got an explicit answer. I am pleased that we did and I think the entire battle was worth while.”

Mar. 7, 2013 at 3:04pmWhy is it News Agencies talking heads are being such a Nervous Nelly about surveillance drones in the United States. And attacking U.S. citizens in the United States.
If you are on a government watch list “everything you do on the Internet”, and “everything you say or text on your cell smart phones”, it is looked at and the government watchdogs do not need drones to do this. “”People who are doing things have worries”", because they are being watched and listened to. “” Times have changed get used to it, nothing you can do about it, Drone Nervous Nelly’s “”.
Bleeding hearts and News Talking Heads keep calling this guy in Yemen an American born citizen and his son, they made it very clear they did not want anything to do with the United States, and the people with them say the same, “” made them non-US citizens “” coordinating attacks on the United States killing innocent people, “”that made them combat enemies”" that made it legal to take them out with a U.S. Weapon called a surveillance attack drone.
If Al Qaeda or the Muslim brotherhood had the same technology which they will have soon they will attacking innocent people like “” Non-sharia News Agencies and Internet that rub them the wrong way”". Think about it anti-drone bleeding hearts, you are on their drone list no doubt about it.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 3:03pmRead carefully the letter. “It has come to my attention that you have now asked an additional question” Excuse me Holder, that was the original question you idiot. The answer given in this letter should have been the original answer, rather than beat around the bush and try to lawyer the answer. As others have noted that could not be left alone and Carney had to embelish the answer with a “but”. Still don’t believe any of it. Given the experience of the last 4 years I have no reason to start trusting this administration.
McCain and Graham need to go the way of all other dinosaurs. Gbye.
My two senators supported Dr Paul during the filibuster. I wrote a thank you to all three this am.
And then the responses of McCain and Graham

Mar. 7, 2013 at 2:47pmWe have law enforcement for “imminent threats”. We don’t call up a Marine sniper to take out a dangerous, armed target with hostages, we use local law enforcement or FBI. I don’t believe the military is supposed to be involved in matters of law enforcement unless local authorities are overwhelmed and have specifically asked for their assistance in a declared state of emergency. It still needs to be clarified that the executive branch needs to use existing law enforcement in a legal way to deal with said “imminent threats” on U.S. soil. The government likes to redefine words, so Holder’s answer means nothing. Obama has been reluctant to call actual terrorist groups a threat, and encourages them in other countries, and happily sends our money to them. Since when did he become so concerned about possible terrorist threats? I am concerned that his definition of a threat might closely resemble any one of us.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 2:44pmStand up America and support Rand Paul. I did not take Rand’s actions as fear mongering, I took it as supporting the Constitution. I have called John McCain and Lindsey Graham and expressed my thoughts to them for not standing up with Rand Paul. What part of supporting the Constitiution does these two progressive Republicans not understand. John McCain 202-224-2235, Lindsey Graham 202-224-5972.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 2:38pmEric holder is a traitor along with his president. They both hate the constitution and work day by day to destroy or discredit it. Obama probably heard all of the cirticism of his ‘drone’ statement and the one by Holder.,…..and told Holder to write a memo and lie. Put these rubes at ease. Do not trust holder or obama in anything.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 2:35pmApparently, the filibuster is the only way we’re going to get answers from this White House. Mr. Paul should do another one next week to find out why DHS has bought all those rounds of ammo and 2,700 urban tactical armored vehicles, and while he is at it, just to be clear on another subject, ask Holder if the President have the authority to confiscate firearms from its’ citizens.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 2:24pmThis denial hinges on the way the government defines who is a “terorist.’
Consider this,
Shaping a hidden agenda?
The government is wasting no time in attempting to redesign the intent of the Second Amendment. Recent briefing by various members of the administration at the highest levels are stressing that the new regulations are not aimed at depriving citizens of their right to own firearms in their homes for protection. This sleight of hand easily goes unnoticed by many in the general population who buy into the thought that home protection was the fundamental reason for the Second Amendment. This was not the case. The Framers of our Constitution were brilliant political scientists. They were in a death struggle with political tyranny and controlling it was their single most purpose. Once they had a firm grasp of this danger they intended to ensure that this country’s citizens would always have the means to protect themselves from the excesses of government. The entire Bill of Rights is dedicated to that end.
The straw man arguments of home defense, personal defense, hunting, targeting shooting are all distractions from the original intent.
On the heels of the story that Homeland Security was creating its own defense force 2009 Nobel Peace Prize nominee Jim Garrow shockingly claims he was told by a top military veteran that the Obama administration’s “litmus test” for new military leaders is whether or not they will obey an order to fire on U.S. citizens.
