A 63-year-old French woman intending to shoot herself recently had her suicide plans thwarted by her German shepherd.
According to the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph, the woman from Sorgues had gone into her backyard, fired a few test shots with a 22-calibre rifle before she turned the gun on herself.
“At the moment she pulled the trigger, her dog jumped on her and diverted the shot,” the Telegraph reported a local police officer saying. In addition, the officer said the dog “probably sensed things and knocked into her to save her.”
The Telegraph reported the woman being found by her husband with a chest wound, which was treated at the hospital as non-life threatening.
In other heroic dog news, in Poland earlier this week a 3-year-old went missing in freezing temperatures and, according to authorities, was saved thanks to a canine.
The dog stayed with the child overnight, keeping her warm and signaling rescuers as to where she was.

Mar. 8, 2013 at 5:21amThe past couple of years have been tough with both my mom and wife (last of family) passing after serious illnesses. My little Westie passed last May and i’m still not over it… just sucks to return home to an empty house every day.
Thanks Addie for using the word “walkies”. My late wife could imitate the wonderful British tv personality who popularized it to a “T”. At this stage, 1 dog is worth 20 humans in my book… dogs don’t lie.

You’ll never replace the one you lost, but it will help take the sting out of the utter sense of loss when walking into a quite house. Believe me, I know.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 6:24pmI understand and empathize. Lost my 15 yr old dog a few months ago. Now have a pup, and have lost one pants size, walking outside every 20 minutes to house train her. I will always love my old dog. She is a treasured memory, but, life goes on. I am thankful to share my life with another beautiful spirit and friend. Please consider sharing your love with another canine. They love unconditionally, and don’t mind if your heart once, and perhaps still, belonged to another.

So do I. My Golden Retriever died several months ago, and I still feel sad when I think of her. While I wasn’t as close to her as my mom was, I still cried when she died. I just thank God that I was able to spend her final moments with her.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 4:03pmI had several GS dogs but after years of massive vet bills and dealing with health issues, I opted for Border Collies. I had my last GS and a BC together and I dont care what anyone says, a GS is By far smarter than a BC! Dont get me wrong, BCs are extremely smart and easy to train (for instance, i trained my bc to drop down when I finger gun her and say “bang” in less than 1 hour) by they have no strategic thinking. My GS dog could always outsmart the border collie by using strategic thinking. I know, you might think i sound crazy…but its true. Anyone with a GS knows, they are always thinking and watching! BC’s are just repeating…not thinking….and they dont make good protection dogs but they are a lot of fun to teach tricks to.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 7:10pmI miss my GSD. Lost her just last month. She was the most wonderful, smartest, most incredible dog I have ever had the pleasure of having as a companion. Broke my heart to loose her. She was crazy smart and I swear she could do geometry and Trig. She could figure out exactly where a ball was going to bounce based on the angles and be there waiting for it with her mouth open at just the perfect elevation. She could also open doors and I swear she knew what I was saying every time I spoke to her. She knew how to tell time and would nudge me to the minute if I asked her to “remind me in an hour” to take her out for “walkies”.
I still see her in my mind’s eye every time I walk into a room or go for a walk. She was and always will be in my heart. Love that dog.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 4:12pmYou’re right and if gas and electric is down, they can be used to carry small stuff too or pull a small wagon, like the little red ones we grew up with. But you cant beat a dog for a burglar alarm! Alarms dont go off until the burglar has entered already. Dog alarms go off the minute someone comes on your property before they even reach your house!

Mar. 7, 2013 at 4:50pmYou are off base there about cats.Cats aren’t evil and are life savers.I saved a little kitten from sure demise and two months later he saved me from possibly dieing. Not from my own hand however.Yes cats can be gaurd animals and are very very loyal.Mine plays fetch will give me his paw and along with the other two does well at gaurding. They are semi-silent though unlike a dog.
Unlike dogs you don’t just pick them they must also pick you.If they don’t you will have a cat alright but one that most would consider selfish evil exc.Its also necessary for you to choose the right breed/mixedbreed to get the results you are looking for, just like with dogs.None of them are very far away from me.The kitten is never more than a foot away unless on the porch.
For what its worth I love dogs too.Personally I prefer hounds over almost all other dogs. They are smart reasonably easy to train good with kids very protective and persistant in being protective when the need arises.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 5:36pmObjective- You’re partially right, but from what I’ve seen, they like to play the I’m innocent card a lot especially kittens. With kittens they can claw things and when you walk into a room, they’ll bolt away look up at you with their adorable faces as if saying “what did I do?” That’s what I mean by evil. A cute evil as I said before.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 5:47pmYeah, occasionally cats can display more loyal, bonding tendencies. I had a cat in high school who was practically my shadow, slept with me every night, etc. However, such instances are the exception rather than the rule.

Besides I want to live long enough to watch North Korea and Iran put a nuke missile into Washington and that day is coming FAST…..This country has reached Sodom and Gomorrah status and it originates in Washington…..too many self indulged people in Washington anymore.
I would never ever take up arms to fight for a country for Freedoms that are just taken away because one or two people deem me dangerous……The reason so many men fought in foreign wars were to protect the constitution and now Eric Holder wants to take that away…Washington and this Admin got itself into this mess and they can get themselves out of it……Let the Nukes Fly.

Mar. 7, 2013 at 3:30pmSo you’re saying the dog has no sould and can only help people through mythical spirits?
I’m glad the lady is alive and more grateful that she didn’t kill the dog first. However, we have the right to life. That makes it our life. Along with the right to our life, we have the right to end our life if we see fit to do so. With respect to religion, Jerfferson said “if it neither breaks my arm or picks my pocket, it is of no matter to me.” I thinks this applies to all rights equally. Suicide neither breaks the arms of others nor picks their pocket so leave them the hell alone.
