What the Heck Does Van Jones Mean By the ‘Black Santa Claus…Shaved His Beard Off’?

Former White House green jobs czar Van Jones had an interesting descriptor for President Barack Obama: “the black Santa Claus” who “shaved his beard off.”

Jones was responding to an excerpt in Vanity Fair from a forthcoming biography about Fox News chief Roger Ailes in which Ailes said Obama had “never worked a day in his life” after the charge was used against Ann Romney during the presidential campaign last year.

“First of all, Barack Obama’s hair is white. He looks like the black Santa Claus, you know, shaved his beard off,” Jones said Wednesday on CNN, before adding: “You don’t go from looking like Tiger Woods to looking like Morgan Freeman in three years if you’re not working hard.”

The Washington Free Beacon flagged the clip:

“‘Obama’s the one who never worked a day in his life. He never earned a penny that wasn’t public money. How many fund-raisers does he attend every week? How often does he play basketball and golf? I wish I had that kind of time. He’s lazy, but the media won’t report that.’ He noticed my arched eyebrows and added, ‘I didn’t come up with that. Obama said that, to Barbara Walters.’ (What Obama said was that he feels a laziness in himself that he attributes to his laid-back upbringing in Hawaii.)”

  And if the number of rounds of golf one plays is Mr. Ailes’ measure of laziness then I guess all those CEOs, doctors, lawyers, a and business executives out on the golf courses every day are all lazy.   In any case Mr. Ailes was just spinning in defense of Ann Romney from Hillary Rosen. Here’s Mr. Ailes’ quote in full context….

  It is very disingenuous of you to put the focus on Mr Ailes’ opinion when the REAL story is how Mr Jones (and many on the Left) accuse any critic of the President as being somehow racially motivated.
  
  I have no idea as to Mr Ailes’ character, he may be racist. The fact is, Mr Jones is accusing him of using a racial slur when claiming the President is ‘lazy’.
  
  Is there no shame? Will the race card ever get old?
  
  President Obama plays basketball, would I be racist if I said “I bet he’s good at it?”
  
  A Democrat councilman recently was accused of being racist when attending a Purim party dressed as a black basketball player.
  
  We say, “Enough, already!”
  
  A racist country would not elect a black Oresident once, let alone twice!
  
  I live in an upperclass neighborhood in Texas that is predominately white, yet we had a black mayor until he was term limited out.

  Sorry but it’s you who are making the mistake of taking Mr. Ailes’ criticism as being legitimate.
  
  First of all the subject of the conversation was not Mr. Obama’s work ethic, but Ms. Rosen’s criticism of Anne Romey “never having worked a day in her life”. Rather than take that comment on directly (which is pretty easy to rebut), Mr. Ailes pivots to Mr. Obama.
  
  Second, Mr. Ailes uses working for the government and playing golf as the yard stick to measure someone’s work ethic(I guess that would make Mr. Romney lazy during the four years he was governor).
  
  And finally he twists Mr. Obama’s words to Barbra Walters to complete his racist trope.
  
  This is about as loud a dog whistle as you can have.
  
  I’ve yet to hear Blaze commentators call anything white people say about blacks racist. I recall a story featuring white high school girls posting a youtube video showing themselves dropping n bombs and ridiculing black classmates and that was deemed ok too.
  
  The only racism Blaze readers appear to see is when black college professors get arrested trying to get into their own homes and the POTUS calls out the cops for “acting stupidly”. That’s real racism

If you do not like what Ailes said, go to the Fox website and send him and email to argue with him. While I do most often disagree with you, and you with me, I have always found you to be smarter than this.   You clearly have a very narrow threshold of what is racist and not racist.
  
  Any comment while taken by itself devoid of any context or history is therefore never racist.
  
  What If I said something like “If you want to see Michelle Obama jump out of bed in a hurry, just put some fried chicken and ribs on the counter”. Technically that in and of itself is not a racist statement, after all I’d certainly jump out bed in a hurry for that meal.
  
  So what is racist, short using an ethnic slur?
  
  My point is that Mr. Ailes in his sudden zeal to defend Ms. Romney reveled something about himself. You give me 10 white Romney supporters and ask them to rebut the attack from Ms. Rosen, I guarantee you that none would have called Mr. Obama lazy.
