Army, Marine Corps Cancel Their Tuition Assistance Programs Because of Sequestration

The U.S. Army and Marine Corps have pulled the plug on their tuition assistance programs one week after across-the-board federal spending cuts known as sequestration went into effect.

Soldiers and Marines will be able to finish up courses they’ve already started, but they won’t be able to enroll in new courses, the Defense Department announced.

“This suspension is necessary given the significant budget execution challenges caused by the combined effects of a possible year-long continuing resolution and sequestration,” Pentagon Army spokesman Paul Prince told Stars and Stripes. “The Army understands the impacts of this action and will re-evaluate should the budgetary situation improve.”

According to Stars and Stripes, the Army’s program allowed for soldiers to complete a high school diploma, certificate program or college or master’s degree with the service paying all tuition and fees up to $4,500 per fiscal year.

“This week, DOD’s comptroller issued guidance indicating that the services should consider significant reductions in funding new tuition assistance applicants, effective immediately and for the duration of the current fiscal situation,” Pentagon spokesman Nathan Christensen told the Marine Corps Times.

According to the Defense Department, Navy and Air Force officials are reviewing their options and are expected to announce a decision about continuing their own tuition programs next week.

  Free education for illegal aliens, but not for our soldiers? 1M to play golf with Tiger Woods, but right now, my daughter is at Basic Training in Ft Leonard Wood and often states in her letters that they have no toliet paper.

  While this is true, it is wrong to call our poor and disadvantaged ‘leeches’ or anything else disparaging. Most didn’t choose to be in the positions they are currently in. In this current state of economic affairs, we are all just one paycheck away from poverty ourselves.

  You people speak as if those who go into the military are known for their intelligence. At least the ‘leeches’ are not creating enemies around the world to justify their existence. The only reason this country will ever be attacked is due to he actions of these SO CALLED patriots. You want to believe they are patriotic, yet their real job is to provide support to the corporations that pay no taxes.

  @Betterpart All I see everyday are “leeches”. Buying soda pop, candy, energy drinks, donuts, chips, ice cream, and a bunch of other crap with there welfare card. And then they pull out their cash to buy beer and cigarettes. Why should they get a phone also?
  Definition of “Leech” as a verb. Habitually exploit or rely on: “he’s leeching off the abilities of others”.
  Millions are leeching off the abilities of others. I work hard so the leeches can have their energy drinks? I think it’s mean to take my money and give it to someone who will blow it. I think that is called “theft”.

How about sharing our money with American,s the money you waste on flying here, there, everywhere for free vacations, free food, Air Force I and II on separate destinations, entertaining all the now wealthy DC lobbists in plush restaurants, congress and senate members to all party together. Yet, you can’t even keep tours open for the house Americans provide for you and your family.
  Maybe your entitlements should be cut back to reflect the present suffering from loss of jobs . Talk about social justice as this country’s solution to poverty, then how about sharing your wealth and other politicians in dc.   Is it wrong to call the poor or disadvantage ‘leeches’? For some the truth is hard to face. That is exactly what they are. It’s thier culture and mind set. They chose thier destiny! Example! Myself! At age of 16 my dad commits suicide and 4 months later my mom moves out. I barely graduate high school. I had a CHOICE! No money for college it was either streets or military. Made the best CHOICE of my life . Joined military. CHOOSING hard work, dedication, selfless service, and sacrifice I promoted fast through the rank. After serving 24 yrs and CHOOSING to complete my BA in Managament I now have far many positive life choices I thought I would never have.
  
  Moral of the story. Life, nothing but choices. They may have been placed in current leeching situation but its thier choice to be a positive productive American citizen or leech from those who are. My opinion, which is actually worth nothing, I see the latter.

  ***** you ground zero. You know nothing of the intelligence or integrity of this family. My husband fought in the first Gulf war (you may have to Google that event, as I highly doubt you know anything about it) But, my daughter, since she was 16 yrs old, earnestly looked for employment. Sometimes she would ride her bike 14 miles just to put in an application at some place she heard was hiring. And nothing. She graduated with very high grades last year. Her dad and I had a savings account that we were going to use as college money, but when he lost his job for six months at the beginning of 2009 we went through it just to pay our bills and eat. We never had to go on the government dole and never collected unemployment. We remained current on our bills the whole time. But, even though she had really good grades (all A’s and 3 B’s) when she graduated, no one was there to offer a free ride to college. Her dad discussed going in the military. She had already done 2 years of high school ROTC and she enjoyed it. She decided that is what she would do. And besides, she loved the idea of serving her country. So the education benefit (as I clearly stated before) was only ONE of the main reasons she enlisted. Her ASVAB score was so high; she could have had any job she wanted. But, she chose Military Police as that follows in line with what she wants to do in a career- a detective. We did not sell our daughter to anyone and you are nothing but a tool, a useful idiot.

  Untrue. You need a master’s to be competitive for Major in the AF. After this semester we’re on our own…which means only he can go to school. We can’t afford to have us both taking master classes at full price. Our budget has been overhauled about 5 times since 1/1/13. Ridiculous.

Anyone remember the “freeze” on the EPA increases? The EPA wanted a 6% increase for 3 years in a row. Obama gave them an 18% increase and then “froze” increases for 3 years. Now that’s saving and cutting back !!!

I am 51 years old, serving my 23rd consecutive year in the U.S. Army. I find it appalling that one of the first things the Military cuts is TA, with only 12 hours notice. College education factors in for promotion points for younger Soldiers attempting to ear the Rank of SGT and SSG, and college degrees allow Senior Soldiers to be competitive at the upper ranks. Let us not start by cutting TA to dependents, just go straight for the jugular…the Soldier. Since the Sequester is a cut in the future increase of spending and NOT a reduction of Federal spending (the Federal Government will still spend more money next year than it did this year), how is it that cuts are being made in areas that have not seen a reduction in funding? Do the politicians think I am a fi_icking idiot? I am an electronic technician by the way, repairing thermo-electro-optical devices.

  Most Colleges require students to at least take 101 classes in Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
  It’s BS that our soldiers have to endure this crap in order to get promoted when, after a tour, they are probably more qualified to TEACH these classes than the average college prof. and i’m pretty sure they weren’t essential for the development of your training in your highly skilled profession, either CKNAPP.
  
  What i’m saying is the system is flawed and tax dollars are mis-appropriated with this garbage.

  Tuition Assistance is one of the few real incentives of even being in the military these days. I just applied for TA last week, and for some reason it was initially denied due to some typo in the form. The processing office gave me the run-around in my attempts to have them fix it. It finally took a letter from my college to have them approve it. TA is not paid to the student, it is issued straight to the institution. In my case, FY cap is $4,500 and each credit hour is capped at $250.

  We’re not complaining about guys like you trying to get an education. We have huge problems with the college system, itself, and would prefer they gave the money directly to you to spend as you chose.

  The G.I. Bill was enacted in 1944 primarily to compensate Americans that were drafted into service for the inconvenience of being coerced into the armed forces.
  There is no need for it in a volunteer army.

  The GI Bill can not be used until 4-6 years after joining the military. However the air force promotion systems (and most other branches) require officers to have their masters degree by their 8th-9th year of service to see their promotion. The same goes for the enlisted side with Associates or Bachelors. So given the fact that my pay is a hard set number, what else are we as members supposed to do?
  
  If you want to know the bigger sham, the Air Force doesn’t care what you get your masters degree in, they just want you to have one. So given the fact that we are gone so often, and when we are home work usually more the 40 hours a week, and most of that work is filled with other miscellaneous stuff like Base runs, all day resiliency briefings, or safety standdown days. Most of us don’t have time to pursue a quality degree if we ever want to have a life at home, so the term “pay the fee get the degree” becomes common. Most guys attend online degree mills like Phoenix or others, none of us like it but we don’t have much of a choice.

Just a suggestion but I think all of Congress should have to take a 10% cut in their budgets and pay and the Obama’s should stop traveling and vacationing untill they all can come together on a budget. This should easily make up for the budget cuts untill they do.

So a 2% reduction of the proposed increase of future spending of the out of control congress is too blame. Don’t think for a minute that this isn’t more of that wonderful Chicago style politics that puts country last and control first.

  Where can we send donations to help them stay in college. The Obama the Mad gave $250 Million to Egypt two weeks ago, hours before the Sequester started. I know the Leftist Liberal colleges will not give our troops a brake on tuition.

There is absolutely NO reason to join the service to fight for a Marxist, the MIC and the Central Banks. The enemies are domestic and they live in DC.
