Do You Know the Problem With This Piece of Russian Propaganda?
Fostering patriotism among countrymen is paramount for the United Russia party of President Vladimir Putin, which just commissioned a series of billboards to commemorate “Happy Defender of Fatherland Day” — a holiday dedicated to honoring the Russian Armed Forces.
While the premise may seem well-meaning, there was one rather glaring discrepancy a local blogger noted, however. As it so happens, the picture featured in Putin’s nationalistic ad promoting the glory of the Russian military is actually of an Israeli Merkava III tank taken from the Israel Defense Force’s official Flickr account.
The photo showcases an exercise by the IDF’s Armored and Engineering Corps.
The Times of Israel noted that an IDF spokesperson is aware of the billboard, but declined to provide additional comments to Russian-language site IzRus.

The Merkava tank is a superior homegrown weapon and the IDF armored divisions are second to none. Russian tanks are an old design. Israel kicked Syria’s **** in the Yom Kippur war when they were outnumbered like 10 to 1. Posted on March 8, 2013 at 5:37pmI’ll give you T34/85 might make the running for best in WW2 but not the 76 mm equiped. They tended to have the numerical advantage like the good old Sherman (Ronson) but one on one I beleive the T34 would be down the list.

Posted on March 8, 2013 at 9:25pmThe problem with comnparing WWII tanks is that the roles are very different. today we all have main battle tanks (MBTs) but back then they had light tanks, infantry support tanks, tank destroyers, etc.. while the T34/85 was a good tank saying it is the best of the war is a stretch because of the variables and catagories. the german 75mm high velocity gun(as well as the 88 of course) was much better at killing russian armor at longer ranges, the T34 just could not effectively respond at those ranges. it took the heavier IS/KV series like the stalin to even those odds.

In terms of quality and technology, the best WW2 tank was probably the german Tiger. The problem was that it was sophisticated, expensive, and slow off the production line. Also, in Russian conditions, it was fatally heavy and couldn’t use its startling turn of speed to advantage.
The T34, on the other hand, was cheap, relatively light, unsophisticated, simple to operate, and was practically spewed onto the battlefield.
German armour, advanced as it was, simply couldn’t effectively compete…
