‘I Don’t Know What’s Happened to John McCain, But I Find This Very Sad’ — Find Out Who Said This and Why

NEW YORK, NY – NOVEMBER 13: Newt Gingrich attends TIME’s Person of the Year panel on November 13, 2012 in New York City. Credit: Getty Images for TIME
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Friday joined a chorus of critics and ripped Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for attacking Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and the senators who stood beside him during Wednesday’s filibuster.
“I don’t know what’s happened to John McCain, but I find this very sad,” Gingrich told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.
When asked whose side he was on, “the McCains or the Rand Pauls,” Gingrinch said he was “really disappointed in John McCain.”
“I’m very saddened by it,” he added. “McCain, in his younger years, was a great maverick. He took on his party all the time.”
He continued: “The idea that he’s now lecturing the next generation because they have the guts to stand up, which is–I would have thought John McCain we do have applauded them and he would have said, I may not agree with you in detail, but I’m proud of the fact that you’re standing up for your beliefs, you’re fighting.”
After proclaiming that Paul is “right” in this instance, Gingrich said the Kentucky senator was correct to question the Justice Department’s initial claim that the federal government could use drone strikes on American citizens inside the U.S. with no due process.
“If our Constitution means anything, it means that your government can’t capriciously kill you without the rule of law. And it was very clear from the attorney general’s earlier letters that they were reserving the right– remember, we’re not talking about a combatant engaged in fighting against the US. The minute you do that, you lose all your rights,” Gingrich said.
Taking one more shot at McCain, Gingrich asked: “Does he know nothing of history?”

And it was very clear from the attorney general’s earlier letters that they were reserving the right–” Nice Newt. I’m looking forward to you running for President again, so you can raise money simply in order to fly around the country and sell books and support your jet set lifestyle.
But of course Newt’s comments are preposterous. As the editors of the ultra-conservative Wall Street Journal said, “Calm down, Senator,” wrote the editors. “Mr. Holder is right, even if he doesn’t explain the law very well. The U.S. government cannot randomly target American citizens on U.S. soil or anywhere else. What it can do under the laws of war is target an “enemy combatant” anywhere at anytime, including on U.S. soil. This includes a U.S. citizen who is also an enemy combatant.”
Sorry Newt, sorry you guys. The existence of drones, the fact that they physically exist and the US has these weapons, doesn’t suddenly give anyone the authority to “capriciously kill you without the rule of law.” Think about it. Does the mere fact that drones exist allow the government to “capriciously kill you without the rule of law.”
It’s like the entire concept is so stupid, so irrational, that it makes sense to people. Newt knows that too, as Rand does. This is a political appeal to the ill-informed and uneducated. Seriously guys, you’re not that

Nice Try.
WSJ is Moderate-Conservative at best.
If you had any integrity you’d endorse specific definitions for drone use.
If we were subjected to another psuedo-Conservative regime you would demand that accountability.
At least define “enemy combatants”.
Right now, according to your ilk, Sarah Palin probably qualifies.
Hell… half of the law-abiding posters here are convinced that they qualify when they read the SPLC reports.

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 3:01amAlthough I do NOT agree with Jane Fonda’s actions back in the day, I do NOT believe she should/would be targeted by drones on US soil – per the PRESENT description of their use.
I therefor disagree with THAT part of Rand’s speech.
COMBATANT is important.
He could/should have used another name…
However I DO like the fact that Rand stood up for the “statement” that these drones would never be used here.
Not that having something in writing means CRAP to the gvmt these days…
But at least it was a noble effort to get attention to the possibility of their use.
I do find it odd that McCain did not say the same.
He said the 1st part more or less but left out his thoughts about the use of drones in the future.
And who is to say if “enemy combatant” may be dropped from the description of their use???

“The existence of drones, the fact that they physically exist and the US has these weapons, doesn’t suddenly give anyone the authority to “capriciously kill you without the rule of law.”
No one was making that argument.
“The U.S. government cannot randomly target American citizens on U.S. soil or anywhere else”.
Why not? The language is vague enough to require an answer from the AG. Wait a minute, that’s exactly what Rand was doing.
Senator Graham ironically stood on the senate floor and pondered the vague language of the NDAA of 2012. He said it essentially makes the US part of the battle field of the war on terror. Opens the door for the use of armed drones. This is where the Pearl Harbor arguments come in. Everyone agrees an attack like that gives the military the right to operate on US soil. Did you get that. The issue is that “enemy combatant” is far too vague when using drones on US soil. Why not have specific language for specific threats. The reason is they want to reserve the right to use drones on American citizens. And they did. Doesn’t matter what AG said in his letter, the NDAA of 2012 is vague enough that they could do it.
As usual meathead, you typed a lot of words to make one big false argument. Every story you comment on you use the same rhetorical arguments. Keep it up and your bound to eventually make a legit argument. Probably not on purpose though as you will type just about anything to muddy the water

You’re either incredibly naive or just an intellectually dishonest political partisan.
We’re not allowed to go to war without a congressional declaration of war. That certainly has never stopped our government from going to war.
The issue here is precedent. Anytime that you allow the government to go above and beyond its constitutional limits, you set a precedent and that precedent will get expanded by the following administration. For example, Bush era policies, such as the patriot act and warrantless wiretapping, set the precedent for Obama to sign the NDAA and to double the size of the domestic spy program.
The NDAA set the precedent that America is part of the battlefield on the war on terror.
The murder of Anwar al-Awlaki, an American citizen, set the precedent for American citizens to be killed, via drone missile strikes. al-Awlaki was a bad man but he was still an American citizen who deserved due process.
Is it really such a far stretch to think that maybe the next administration or the adminstration after or the administration after might use drones to kill a domestic terrorist or two?
The precedent has already been set.
Never forget that in times of great oppression, the “domestic terrorists” are usually the ones fighting for freedom.
My gut feeling is that if this was President McCain, your opinion about his drone policies would be completely different. Again, that is just my gut talking.

If you paid attention, holder first wrote a letter indicating the dictator in chief had the power to kill whoever he wants. That was true when he was a state senator working for the Chicago mob, but now he has to play by the rules.

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 3:29pmMeteor- The “Point” wasn’t about, what appears on the surface, to be a ridiculous statement. With this administration, nothing is clear, therefore, ‘clear’ lines need to be drawn in the sand.. and in this instance, regarding drone policy within these United States, it NEEDS to be clear. Also, if this WAS so ridiculous, why the hell did he not just answer, “of coarse not”, and continue? Up to Rands Fillibuster, this was another ‘dead space’ as to what THIS President believes his legal powers are. No one seems to know, not even Obama, as he continualy tries to UnConstitutionaly, usurp Congressional powers.
He has appointed Holder as AG? A man who is obsessed with defending those who kill Americans through terrorist attacks [google Holder Fast and Furious - 'FALN'-etc]. It is not bothersome that Obama moves Abu WITHOUT Congress’ knowledge, as he is spilling his guts.. to NY, where he’s given Miranda, and stops?? Ignoring Geneva and insisting HOLDER prosecute Abu in “Civil” court and not “Military”, when Abu is considered a “UNLAWFUL” combatant, by Geneva?
The Government has bought Millions of rounds of ammo.. ‘hollow points’.. which are BANNED by the Geneva Convention. WHY? Why won’t they tell us?
This is done while Fienstein, and others want guns banned.
It appears the Government WILL use drones inside our borders, and I for one, WANT to know WHEN it IS OK.
It isn’t bothersome the drone Q couldn’t be answered so quickly?

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 10:34pm2Amend, the rules that govern an attack on an American with a drone by an agency whose job it is to protect the public are the same rules that govern an attack on an American with a gun wielded by a cop to protect the public or you using a gun to protect your family. Same rules.
No, the fact that drones exist does not change the Constitutional requirement of due process under the Constitution. A new weapon does not raise the specter that the government can suddenly start to kill people capriciously without due process (as Newt Gingrich claimed).
Did you realize that there is no law, no statement in the record of any kind that that US couldn’t use a nuclear bomb on Americans? Does that scare you? Did you know that a SWAT squad sniper can kill an American citizen without a jury trial if that American is an immediate threat to others? There’s no law, there’s no regulation that prevents him from doing so. Does that scare you? That a SWAT sniper can just kill you and Eric Holder hasn’t issued a statement saying he can’t? Are you in a panic about that? Does that make you fear you might be taken out for your political beliefs?

That’s NOT irresponsible rhetoric. It’s the truth! Our politically correct, modern sensibilities make a public pronouncement of such truths dangerous – especially, considering most Americans still have no concept of who it really is they’ve put in charge. It’s frightening and hard to believe, but it’s true. Most are still sound asleep, self-centered and myopic (living w/blinders on), or they’re working so hard to stay afloat, they’ve not the time to stay abreast of what’s happening right in front of their eyes.
I can’t imagine living my life in self-imposed ignorance. But, many do. Unless we can wake up 75% of those still asleep (but, who generally believe in the nation’s principles and philosophy), we’re doomed – and, even then, it may be far, far too late.
Another fact. :-(

Posted on March 8, 2013 at 11:14pmToday there is little difference between Democrats and Republicans.
The Republicans have lost both their mooring and their bearing – one of the main reason that Barack Obama won a second term.
When you try to be more like the other guy to obtain votes or vascilate back and forth, you lose your credibility and any significant differentiation, particularly when you discard your values and your principles. Gee, does John McCain and Mitt Romney ring a bell? John McCain, Mr. Go Along To Get Along himself. Romney? Left the attack mode after debate one and never responded to false TV adds and stuck foot in mouth with his ignorant “47% statement”. Know people personally in the 47% who were considering voting for Romney and bailed on his stupid comment.

Big gubmint neo-con or whatever label folks throw on him — HE ‘should’ have been the nominee – yesterday’s news — The only choice now is to decide if you’re an American who believes in Freedom, or a ‘commie’ social marxist. BOTH parties are predominantly PROGRESSIVE, and have been since at least 1912 – History tells us the status quo was ‘broken’ when some dude named Lincoln FAILED in his early senate runs against Douglas — but managed to become the puppet for a new party — the Republican party — which we also know from scrubbed history was essentially run by Sec of War Stanton — the apotheosis ceremony following his demise elevated him to god status — was he? No. hated by north AND south, alike — It is also interesting that no one has brought forth Russia’s involvement in the Civil War :-)

Like I tell people at work, if a bad guy gets through my alarm, my dog, they will face a very mad assault weapon, and we all know, they kill all by themselves. Posted on March 8, 2013 at 10:26pmReally got to agree with you JUSTANGRY. Part of being a successful politician is being able to read the pulse of the nation. However, you do have some who are not politicians, they are Statesmen. Reagan was probably the last great Statesman we have had, but there is a lot of real hope with some of the Freshman class of 2010. If Obama could actually read the pulse of the nation, he would be afraid for his life. There is a current of dissent in this country that is not necessarily a bad thing. One of two things are going to happen. We will be permitted to elect true Statesmen who truly wish to effect change for the benefit of the Nation and ALL citizens, and when I say permitted, I mean NO RIGGED ELECTIONS. Or, option #2… all out civil war. I’m kind of leaning towards #2 given the Feds. increasing intrusive behavior and given the fact that it already seems that they, Our elected officials, have already seemingly declared war against decent law abiding citizens. It almost has gotten to the point where the only way you can be assured of being treated with any degree of respect from the Gov. is by being just as depraved and abnormal as possible so that out of P.C. you will actually garner MORE rights than ANY citizen is entitled too. Sad times we’re living in

Romney pays his dues last election, McCain isn’t owed nothing from Romney and best just keep his distance. McCain cheated in Florida, teaming up with that Charlie guy, plastic as they come. Plus, Bush didn’t endorse Romney because he respected the agreement with Charlie that nobody would endorse in their state… Then they endorsed McCain last minute, swung the largest latino voting block .. And also took a hard smear on Romney in the midst of it … They all ran Romney hard, the dude works hard, is as straight as they come. He can’t win, if Mormons don’t play scratch my back games, but do honest trading. The media sold Romney to a large divide in our country… as greedy .. they hate oil, even in Western Pa, where we are sitting on our children’s future for 20 -30 years in that industry.. Our country’s operations are co-putt, and we don’t hire the guy who has an excellent record putting operations back in order, while more friendly to conservative idea’s.. in more ways than most people ever know .. Everything gets run through federal channels, nothing get’s settle at the lower levels and this is unbalanced .Romney’s condition would have promoted local solutions .It is what it is, but some very crazy stuff is going on in government..
