Shep Smith Confronts John McCain Over His Rand Paul Criticism, Drones in Tense Interview

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. speaks with reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, March 7, 2013, as he leaves a GOP policy meeting. McCain was one of a small group of Republican senators who had dinner with President Barack Obama Wednesday night to address political gridlock. Credit: AP
During Fox News’ “Studio B” Friday, Shepard Smith confronted Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) over a number of issues, including his sharp criticism of Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), his stance on drone strikes and the future of the GOP.
McCain repeated his criticism of Paul’s filibuster, which intended to shed light on the potential for drone strikes against Americans on U.S. soil.
Smith first recapped viewers and showed video of McCain and his colleague Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) mocking and criticizing Paul’s filibuster. McCain, reading from an editorial in the Wall Street Journal, called it a “stunt” meant only to “fire up impressionable libertarian kids in their college dorms.”
“No one is going to be struck by a Hellfire missile from a drone that is not an enemy combatant,” McCain said. “That is a fact.”
Instead, McCain said Congress should be focusing on real issues like the massacre in Syria and North Korea’s nuclear capability. He added that the U.S. should not be debating “the impossible scenario.”
Watch the tense interview via Fox News below:
There is a chance that McCain did not watch all of Paul’s filibuster, as the the Kentucky senator repeatedly made it clear that he doesn’t believe the government would actually drop a missile on an American citizen. Instead, he said he wanted assurance from the White House that the executive branch does not have that kind of power under the U.S. Constitution.
The Republican senator did admit that there should be more transparency and oversight on the federal government’s drone program, but again stressed that the government would never drop Hellfire missiles on Americans inside the United States.
On the future of the GOP, McCain said it is he, not Paul, that represents the “party of Ronald Reagan.” He also refuted Smith’s assertion that he is an “interventionist.”
“I’m of the party of Ronald Reagan and there’s been a debate in our party for years and years about whether we should withdraw to fortress America or not,” he said. “But to say we’re interventionists is a mislabeling and absolutely false.”
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. When confronted with what he meant by this at an Arizona Townhall meeting, all he could do is talk in circles without answering the question. It is time to remove all of these “Progressive Conservatives” in the next election. The Republican party will win, not by adopting liberal policies, but by getting rid of all of these Liberals in sheeps clothing, and standing for what is righteous and in line with our Republic as it was meant to be.

Are we sure that Senator McCain is the same John McCain that was shot down?
Anybody in the enemies control for that long can never be completely vetted.
Even if everything is as reported on McCain, it is obvious that his ‘anger management problems’ have now moved into a version of senile dementia.
I am not denigrating his hero status. Hooraw.
There are proper ways for him to continue to serve his country, but NOT making important decisions.
He should NEVER have even been close to somebody in power after his experiences.
Look at his actions.
Do they look more like John Wayne or Jane Fonda?

Rather that be concerned himself with the constitutional concerns he was out brown nosing the archetect of the constitutional shreader in chief over a few drinky poos and tax payer provided dinner.

I’m sorry, but this is just about the most ridiculous “controversy” I’ve ever heard, and I’ve heard lots of them.
You seem to buy the argument that “the only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” Let’s just say for argument that’s true. So why wouldn’t that same logic apply to a terrorist, either a home grown terrorist like Timothy McVeigh, or an American terrorist with an allegiance to Muslim extremists?
So if someone – an American let’s just say – has hijacked an airliner, or is piloting an explosive laden aircraft and is flying toward the Capitol, Pentagon or some tall building in New York, the US can’t shoot them down without a trial and conviction? So the US can shoot them down to save lives, but not with a drone, only with a fighter aircraft? Seriously, what is the position here?
Now if your thoughts run in the paranoid direction, and believe that the government is out to get you, and has become a dictatorship and will start killing political opponents at any time without due process, well that’s a different scenario. In that case, they’ll use drones anyway won’t they? And even without drones, they can still kill ya can’t they?
This “controversy” is ludicrous and it’s sad to see what’s become of politics in America. China is laughing. Russia is lau

That is the wrong type of leader for the republican party at any point. He is fracturing the GOP to the point where the GOP may be finished. That’s good and bad. Good because the strategies they’ve been using don’t work anymore. And they have compromised their believes to the point where they are no-longer Conservative. Bad because we need votes to kick Obama’s Progressive Legacy out of office but because of that split it’s twice as hard. I do not agree with several things Rand Paul has done but right now I stand with Rand over John.

This is war, not politics as usual. We have an illegal, unvetted sitting muslim president, folks and the republican party has the stench of death with well advanced rigor mortis. And until we stand up to this obama crap to put him down this will continue to fester, rot and permeate every level of our lives until we are no more. Rand’s stupid dad Ron who, together with that loser ex NM governor Garyi Johnson, split the vote as a national disservice when they knew damn well they didn’t stand a chance and we’ve have been far, far better off with Romney than obama or either one of those two dopes. But now, sir, you are embarrassing yourself & harming our nation & your party.
It’s sad you choose to resort to emotional appeals (a leftist tactic) rather than rely on facts, reason, logic, & law. Even more shameful is you resort to ad hominem attacks of your fellow republicans, whilst accomplishing little if anything yourself to stop the socialist steamroller & out-of-control government (both in power lust & in spending). You shame yourself, sir, and demean the office you hold.
You have become a crotchety, angry, reactionary old man in the public’s eyes. As such, you are now a liability, no longer an asset. If you still love your country, and I believe you DO, then it’s time for you to quietly retire as your last act of public service.

John McCain, basically, Rand was in actuality arguing this one specific, but not broad, point, and that is: is the Constitution still in effect, is it still the law of the land, and do the people look up to the government for their leadership, direction, and or “benevolence”, or does the government look up to the people for its leadership and direction? Whose in charge here, is the people, or the dictatorship of the legislative/executive branch?

McCain of course won’t run for President again, and honestly I think the only reason he’s speaking out in a RINO way on lots of issues is because he’s no longer afraid of a Tea Party challenge in a Republican primary, because he’s not going to run again. That’s the only explanation I have for his bucking the Tea Party line. He’s dropped the “build the dang fence” line you may have noticed.
Rand Paul? As a Democrat, as a liberal, my most fervent wish, my daily prayer, the one thing I’d sell my soul for, is that Rand Paul wins the Republican primary. Actually I’d be equally happy if Rick Perry or Herman Cain or Sarah Palin or their like won the next primary. Or Michelle Bachmann or Allen West. I’d be happy, I’d rejoice, if any of those Tea Party Members won the Republican primary. You’re really out of touch with reality if you think Paul any of those people could win the Presidency.
I, SendTheMeteors, maketh the following prediction: Hilary Clinton will win the 2016 election and will hold the office for eight years. Heed ye one and all, for I have spoken.

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 9:35amI remember during McCain’s Presidential Election Campaign, a gentlemen expressed his concern to McCain that he was afraid of what Barack Obama would do as President. McCain told the man that he did not have to worry about Obama if he came President. He would be a good President. Well, we now know for sure now that he would lead us into socialism, while he bypassed Congress making numerous egregious Executive Orders, and we have seen through his lies during the Benghazi devastation. We’ve seen enough already and we have to endure 3 1/2 more years of this, and only God know what more this President will do!
Senator McCain, I know you mean well but you look at others through rose color glasses. And being on the front lines you should know better by now, but you don’t!. Rand Paul can see the writing on the wall and was right to bring to light that this President is capable of targeting Americans on American soil as this Administration is also capable of re-defining who qualifies as an American enemy combatant. We need more Rand Paul’s in Congress who are unafraid and who are champions of American Liberty!

Posted on March 11, 2013 at 12:59pmI have to laugh at some of you for claiming that McCain has tendencies to communist ideologies and should be removed for such when he is trying to counter the isolationism stance. Regardless, McCain needs to go, but his non-isolationism should stay. The non-interventionism is a modern liberal tenant.
That was my biggest issue with Rand’s father. You cannot be only an economic superpower. At some point you have to stand up for your friends and ensure their enemies do not attack them. Could be bring some of the troops home and turn over a few bases? Yes. Still, we need to protect our allies.
We can even look at this as an economic issue. If we were to allow…say North Korea to attack South Korea without our intervention, what would happen to all the goods coming from Korea? It would likely affect those coming from Japan as well. Not to mention, people couldn’t go to Wal-Mart and buy a million Chinese made plastic baseball bats because our response would be to cut off trade with China for supporting the North Koreans.
Let us remember how complex the world is please…

You claim that non-interventionism is a modern liberal tenant. I’m sorry but you are just flat wrong. I imagine that you are thinking of the 60′s anti-war hippy drugs and sex culture.
Look, there wer many conservatives against getting involved in Viet Nam. Then if you go way back, to World War II (the war that almost everyone believes was a just war as far as us getting involved), and research the people who were against the U.S. getting involved in the war. It was ONLY CONSERVATIVES who tried to keep us out of the war. Progressives wanted involvement because they knew that during times of war, this is the absolute greatest of chances for statists and progressives (interventionists abroad and interventionists at home) to get even closer towards their totalitarian/authoritarian utopia. Conservatives wanted no involvement and were aaginst Roosevelt’s initiatives of arming other countries involved. Most people do not realize this, but please don’t be confused here—I’m speaking of the period directly before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The Conservatives knew that Roosevelt was basically provoking the Japanese to attack us because he and the progressive Democrats wanted Japan to start something with us. Japan was doing some bad things in the South Pacific but ultimately ended up attacking the U.S. because we were meddling in their affairs. So just realize this, if we want to be the policemen of the world, there will be consequences.

What we have in McCain is a failure, period. He profoundly should have not been the Republican Presidential candidate in ’08. He was a failure at that and did not have the backbone to confront Obama and put him in his place, nor did Romney. We have to stop choosing also rans for Presidential candidates. The not so swift voters of Arizona should have discarded him in the 2010 senatorial primary for a solid candidate in J. D. Hayworth. Not a particularly sharp electorate in Arizona. Of course they are not alone in that category.
Our educational system is doing a good job of turning out low information voters and it shows up at the polls on a regular basis.

How could that be? Because even when McCain was running against Obama in 2008, he did not confront Obama on anything. Couldn’t figure out why back then. Finally a light turned on – McCain both back then and still today pretty much agrees with Obama on everything. Their ideologies may be a bit different, but their end game is still the same, “We’re from the government and we’re here to help you.”
Thanks, but no thanks. McCain is like a bug in a rug. May have to rap the rug up with him in it to get rid of him. Career politicians absolutely have to go. They serve their own interests – not the countries nor the people.
