Was Rand Paul’s Filibuster a Turning Point for the Libertarian Movement?
Kentucky Senator Rand Paul’s 13-hour filibuster Wednesday on CIA Director nominee John Brennan and President Barack Obama’s drone and assassination policy revealed to much of the general public what has been known to political observers for some time: there is a growing fissure in the Republican Party between libertarians like the Pauls and Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, and old guard foreign policy hawks like Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham. Could this revelation be a turning point for the GOP?
Noah Rothman of Mediaite writes that Paul’s filibuster shattered the monopoly Democrats have had on “romance” and young voters.
Paul’s ultimately unsuccessful efforts to rein in the president spoke directly to the forgotten millions of Americans wary of the ever-expanding scope of the unconstrained global war on terror. Paul offered himself up as something of a martyr. His voice, once lonely, grew in stature as his Republican colleagues – one after the next – shared his demand for redress from the White House, though all knew that would not be forthcoming. It was poetic. It was romantic. What may be most important, it reframed Congressional Republicans. All of the sudden, they were fighting for a cause with self-evident nobility that requires no public education campaign: life, liberty, and due process. In filibustering, Paul chipped away at the monopoly on romance that the left has enjoyed for more than a century.
Paul’s filibuster was immediately and forcefully criticized by Sen. John McCain, who said ”If Mr. Paul wants to be taken seriously, he needs to do more than pull political stunts that fire up impressionable libertarian kids.
“I don’t think what happened yesterday is helpful to the American people.“
On “Real News” Friday the panel discussed Paul’s filibuster and negative and positive reactions to it, as well as the growing voice of libertarians in the GOP moving forward?

Low information people, weather they be liberal or conservatives need to read more and talk less. Debating libertarians “pie in the sky” ideas of freedom, begs the question of ok, if we don’t want to move toward individual freedom where do we move toward? Yes, legalizing drugs is a dumb idea under current practice, same with gay marriage. But the idea is not. You have to start with and idea of individual freedom, and hammer out the details to make it work. Milton Friedman said that the hardest ideas to sell are the ideas of individual freedom. For example its hard to explain why you are personally against drugs and yet allow them.

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 8:09pmMilton Friedman actually had a whole lot more to say about that particular topic:
———————————-
Paige: Let us deal first with the issue of legalization of drugs. How do you see America changing for the better under that system?
Friedman: I see America with half the number of prisons, half the number of prisoners, ten thousand fewer homicides a year, inner cities in which there’s a chance for these poor people to live without being afraid for their lives, citizens who might be respectable who are now addicts not being subject to becoming criminals in order to get their drug, being able to get drugs for which they’re sure of the quality. You know, the same thing happened under prohibition of alcohol as is happening now.
Under prohibition of alcohol, deaths from alcohol poisoning, from poisoning by things that were mixed in with the bootleg alcohol, went up sharply. Similarly, under drug prohibition, deaths from overdose, from adulterations, from adulterated substances have gone up.

I have been a Republican for many years but have been totally humiliated by the actions of people like McCain and Graham. I do not agree with many of the Libertarian ideals. I would rather not see them in high political office but the performance of the “old line” Republican party has been disgraceful and has resulted in the demise of this country.
If Republicans do not seek out and support true conservative candidates the party will cease to be a viable option. People like McCain and Graham have helped to bring this country to the place it is now by sitting by and letting Democrats have their way. They are more interested in lining their own pockets then the well being of their own country. I hope the people who have continually reelected these sell outs put them out of office in the next election.

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 9:17amGreat post, well said!
America, as founded, ended for two reasons:
1. Apathy by the majority of Americans.
2. The takers now out number the producers.
As long as the “children” get what they want from Santa Claus, (aka Federal Government), and the American people are happy being slaves of the elite ruling class, they will continue to give up their liberties and freedoms.
The Land of the Free and Home of the Brave is now sadly, the Land of the enslaved and Home of the takers.
Many of us will still fight for our freedom & liberty and restoring America to it’s once proud heritage. It’s not “IF” there will be a fight, it’s “WHEN.”
The ruling elite know this and that’s why they are attacking the 2nd Ammendment.
McCain, Graham, McConnel, Boehner and the rest of the republican leadership are complicite in the destruction of America.

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 7:36amOk let’s get one thing straight Rand Paul stood up for the Conservation of our United States and Constitution. Therefore he was acting towards Conservatism not liberal-tarianism.
One of the best, Godly, CCRs (Christian Conservative Republicans), such as myself, Alfonzo Rachel from ZoNation on PJTV got it right about the scam of liberal-tarians. In Zo’s audio book “Weapon of A.S.S. (American Socialist States) Destruction,” Zo has entire chapter 49 minute chapter called “If it ain’t Liberals, it’s Libertarians.” Zo sums up libertarianism in a nutshell, “Libertarians are just liberals who hate taxes.”
Rand Paul maybe associated to liberal-tarianism because of his whacked-out father but remember Rand wised up after endorsing his dad and endorsed Mitt Romney. Now I know that Mitt was NOT the ideal Conservative candidate but in REALITY the election was going to be result in either Romney or BO elected. Rand was and still is smart enough to remain in reality.
So Rand boosted the Conservative movement not this false neo conservative (= talk fiscal conservatism but socially liberal) movement know as libertarianism.
Libertarians, they hate the Federal Government yet somehow claim to be the true followers of The Federalist-inspired US Constitution? Can you say oxymoron?

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 9:45amWhile I like watching Zo occasionally, his view on libertarianism is incredibly flawed. We are NOT liberals who hate taxes (such a simple-minded description, I have to laugh!). Most liberals (and many so-called conservatives) have very little respect for individual liberty and the Constitution. They only differ in this regarding what individual liberties and Constitutional Amendments they choose to attack. So I’m sorry, but I would actually say that conservatives and liberals are far more similar than libertarians are to liberals.
Glenn Beck explained this on his show a few days ago when he described the TRUE left-right spectrum. And he was right! On this spectrum he showed the Republican and Democrat politicians clustered together and had them all positioned left of center on the spectrum while the libertarians were MUCH further to the right. Like it or not, that’s the way things are. Republicans nowadays are just as statist and Constitution-snubbing as their liberal enemies yet don’t realize that they are just as bad because they are blinded by their ideology and demagoguery.

“If it neither breaks my leg nor picks my pocket and it complies with all of the rules of my god’s morality as I see them and it expands the war for empire and it exempts the wealthy and corporations from paying taxes or obeying the law then I’m fine with it.” is a conservative mind set.

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 4:54amHere is a great quote from Thomas Jefferson:
“The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first”
Article 6 of the US Constitution defines the oath of office that all politicians must swear to before they are allowed to take office, it says in part, The US Constitution…shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned… shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution.
An oath is a verbal PROMISE to tell the truth. (an obvious joke to almost all politicians)
The Oath they take says:I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.
THE POLITICIANS are the domestic enemies to the Constitution! A lot of them are lying when they take the oath because their purpose from the start is evasion of the Constitution!
We need a law that states… if you violate this oath of office YOU ARE

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 12:15amYes…it helped the libertarian cause. The best result was it highlighted our constitution and showed it to still be relevant. We must hold dear to our constitution through all adversity. It protects our freedom.

Posted on March 8, 2013 at 11:39pmI think so. I wonder if it might even be an impetus for a third party?

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 5:44amThere’s already a Libertarian Party. There has been for over 40 years. They’ve just never won an election.

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 11:47amGROVER. Funny how the Libertarians are all seeing, all knowing but can’t seem to get past the ends of their noses (which point towards the sun) and win an election on their own merits without glomming onto the Republican Party for expediency and votes.

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 11:11amLibertarianism is a redundancy of Conservatism is many aspects. Where Libertarianism fails is an unrealistic pie in the sky mentality (Liberalism/Progessivism utopia). Neither can seem to deal with the real world around us which has and will continue to affect us at home. We need a new approach for sure and true Conservatism (not the revision that Libertarians offer) is where it needs to start.
Libertarians are NOT Conservatives and all need to remember that fact.
