Austin, Texas is playing host to stars in the worlds of film, music, technology and politics as the annual South By Southwest Conferences (SXSW) kicked off this weekend.

Saturday’s keynote speech featured former Vice President Al Gore and Walter Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal. The official title of the event was “Al Gore on The Future.” Coincidentally, “The Future” is also the title of Gore’s latest book. (currently ranked #326 on Amazon.com).

In the well attended session, Gore actually stayed true to his recycling mantra and actually revisited a theme from 2012′s keynote session with Sean Parker. In that session, Gore was talking about the risks to American democracy and told Parker and the crowd, “Our democracy has been hijacked.”
Fast forward to Saturday afternoon, March 8, 2013. Gore and Mossberg on the stage in front of a full house at the Austin Convention Center. Mr. Gore told the crowd, “Our country is in very serious trouble. But that does not mean I am optimistic.” Then the former Vice President shifted focused to the topic of money and politics and trotted out last year’s catchphrase, “Our democracy has been hijacked.”

Gore continued;
“American democracy has never been perfect, but more often than not, the will of the people did drive policy. Congress today is utterly incapable of passing any reform of any significance unless they get permission from special interests.”
Mr. Gore went on to say “The NRA is a complete fraud because it is financed by the gun manufacturers.” Gore’s belief is that the NRA is in league with the gun manufacturers as opposed to actually defending the Second Amendment rights of the people.
Walter Mossberg also saw an opportunity to question Gore on the sale of Current TV to Al Jazeera. In a rambling explanation, Mr. Gore justified the sale.
“I did extensive diligence and found some pretty remarkable things, it has won major awards around the world for integrity in journalism I felt it was the most interest and disruptive move on the chessboard.”

After the event, Gore held a book signing event that was also well attended. Regarding Al Jazeera, I occasionally read/watch their ‘news.’ They discuss a lot of things we are not even aware of in this country because our media decides for you that it is not pertinent. The main reason I watch, though, is to gauge the anti-American sentiment in the region. There is an ebb and flow, but in general they are nearly as anti-American as our lamestream media…just more open about it. Would I give them an ‘in’ to this country to allow them to spit in our eye (rather than merely in our direction)? He11 no.
But then we did let BBC in and they are fairly anti-American in their news broadcasts, too.

A vast majority of NRA members are NOT in favor of background checks as all of the current proposals are thinly described gun registration programs. Gun registration is ALWAYS followed by gun confiscation, always. I recommend that you do a bit of research before regurgitating what certain politicians are telling you, and what many news media sources repeat without fact checking. You should also do a bit of research on why there is an NRA at all, you will be very surprised. The NRA and gun manufacturers definitely have common interests, but the reason that gun-grabbers hate the NRA is because it represents the only significant lobbying group that actually represents a lot of US Citizens. It spends almost nothing when compared to most other lobby groups, financed by deep pockets. It is powerful because those 5 million Citizens vote. So what the people who demonize the NRA to further their unconstitutional agendas are really saying is that they hate democracy. Think about it. They aren’t demonizing large banking lobby groups are they?

They come to UT to get “educated” at the supposedly prestigious university. It’s a joke. There is no common sense instilled in any of these hypocritical ,juvenile ,spoiled,narcissistic complete morons. The people who love this town and want to keep it safe and sane need to boycott all business (Starbucks , all coffee shops and any place that allows these freaks a platform) and find out what these business owners believe in. If they spout their communist ideas or allow their employees to bring up their political views which they quite often do, tell them to shove it up their filthy asses and walk out. Get in their stupid, punk faces and tell them off. These dirty freaks really do this crap everywhere you go. I have walked out of plenty of places. I don’t want a latte that bad! Everybody knows that this is a republic, but that doesn’t mean anything. No country in the world is a democracy in the sense that the Ancient Greeks used the word, but we’re not living in ancient Greece and we’re not speaking Greek, we’re living in the twenty-first century and speaking English. When people use the word democracy today they are referring to constitutional republics with elected legislatures just like ours. The word republic is too imprecise to be meaningful, since one definition of the word is any country that is not a monarchy, and most dictatorships have the word republic in their name. So people are going to continue to refer to the countries of the free world as democracies, because it’s shorter than calling them constitutional republics with elected governments, and you might as well get used to it, because that’s what the word means now to speakers of twenty-first century English.
Making a big deal out of using the words republic and democracy the same way they were used centuries ago is just a verbal gimmick conservative pundits use to imply that the Republican Party more embodies the founding principles of this country than the Democratic Party does without just coming out and saying so and then looking like hypocrites when they turn around and claim that the two parties are just the same in a different argument about some other issue.
