Benches Clear and Players Brawl During Canada-Mexico World Baseball Classic Game

While Major League Baseball’s opening day is not until March 31, there was excitement and action on the diamond in more ways than one during Canada’s 10-3 romp over Mexico in World Baseball Classic Saturday afternoon. A bench-clearing, full-scale brawl broke out in the ninth inning after Mexican reliever Arnold Leon hit Canadian batter Rene Tosoni with a pitch following several inside balls and a warning to both teams by the umpire.
With a score of 9-3 at the time and the game in Arizona all but over, Canada’s Chris Robinson hit a bunt single, raising tension between both clubs. Following the initial hit batter, both teams cleared the benches, with multiple fights ensuing and haymakers landed on each side. The Associated Press reports that even after fisticuffs ended, Canadian pitching coach Denis Boucher was hit in the face by a full water bottle thrown from the crowd. Umpires eventually ejected seven players from the game, and police officers came onto the field to try and restore order.
MLB stars on the field at the time for Team Canada included Justin Morneau of Minnesota Twins and Joey Votto of Cincinnati Reds, as well as Los Angeles Dodgers’ Adrian Gonzalez for Team Mexico.
ESPN has put together video highlights of the ugly brawl.
Longer videos of the entire melee have since been posted by Youtube Users:

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 5:27pmOh, I think I’m gonna cry. It’s high time Canadians and Mexicans acted like overpaid American sports figures! This reminds me of the time Denny McLain wanted to be fishing instead of playing baseball and beaned an opponent so he’d get tossed out of the game. All the fun has been taken out of sports…but mischief will always find a way……….

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 1:54pmBaseball…the great game that has no clock! Whether players learn it early in their careers or late, “It ain’t over ;til it’s over.”
I’ll never forget Pete Rose coming home to score, late in the game, his All-Star team ahead. The catcher had come out to block the 3rd base line and Pete was coming “home.” Pete bowled that catcher over, beat the throw home, and scored! When he was asked why he did that, Pete replied (and I paraphrase) “I was playing baseball, what game are you talking about?”
Even in late innings and being blown-out, that Mexican pitcher may as well been practicing his “brush-back” pitch. The Canadian batter wasn’t going to try taking 3 strikes, I’m sure he was up to bat to get a hit. Brush-back pitches are usually “close shaves” and one can end up hitting the batter. It’s all baseball, that’s the game, and “It ain’t over ’til it’s over.”

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 10:53amThe game (any game really) is a metaphor… firstly, its a game! People from diverse backgrounds (different languages, etc) can find common ground (in the uniform rules of “the game”) and if nothing else pass the time peacefully watching and playing a game… each side showcasing their strengths and weaknesses (at bat, fielding, base running strategy, endurance, commaraderie, etc) while being civil and not disrespectful… pity we have malcontents and reprobates amoung us that refuse to get along (personally, I think they are almost always liberals and I am pretty sure they think its just me)…

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 10:17amJust a short comment on Canada’s Military…It has a population of 10% of the US…Sure enough they have been in Afghanistan from the beginning losing 158 men and women in combat. Supplied snipers and logistical support for Iraq….also flew missions over Libya and provided Naval support. All from a country with no Military? Any American whom has fought along side them know of there capability and commitment…Just a quick fact check will verify this….

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 7:58amCanada and Mexico at war! Wow! I would pay good money to see that. Go, Canucks! On the baseball front, the Mexican picture clearly escalated the scenario and threw the last pitch straight at the Canadian batter, no question about it. Good job standing up for yourselves, Canada. Posted on March 10, 2013 at 3:42amLet’s see how the MLB Commissioner dispenses himself now on this one.
This wasn’t just a brush back. This was a deliberate attempt to injure. The 3rd Baseman relayed instructions to the Pitcher to hit the batter.
The Umpire on Pitch 2, failed on turfing the Pitcher. He could see that it wasn’t just an inside pitch. Then, the Mexican Fans started throwing baseballs, and water bottles.
Word of warning to American fans. Canadians don’t take crap, they will go into the crowd and settle up. Our hockey history is full example of don’t mess with us. We might be a friendly sort, to a degree. Then look out, it’s hammer time.
Don Cherry said, never let cheap shots take over your game, or the only outlet to stand up for yourself is a brawl. Oh well Mexico, cheap shot 3 was met with a brawl, and the MLB Commissioner had better act with substance because those Mexicans have to cross into our Border!

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 11:27pmApparently, the idiots on the Mexican team didn’t understand the rules. You advance in the tournament by either wins, or, in the case of a tie, run differential. The Canadians were only running up the score so they could have a shot at advancing.
Mexicans…oye.

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 10:27pmI got an idea let’s not have Intl. Baseball anymore. You know where grown men beat the crap out of each other. Or at least put drones up in the air to shoot the trouble makers. Then put 30 round clips by the bodies. Just to make it legal. That’s what the broad from CA. Wants. Then we can blame guns and baseball will be cancelled. Then we’ll start on hockey. The possibilities are limitless. The players will have to get real jobs, you know minimum wage, split shifts, no time for the kids or the wife. Instead of going out to play a game, a stupid game that entertains the rest of us spectators, who wish we could play baseball.
