6 Teens Killed in Freak SUV Crash
WARREN, Ohio (AP/TheBlaze) — A sport utility vehicle carrying eight people crashed into a guardrail and landed in a pond early Sunday in northeast Ohio, killing six teenagers, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
The other two people inside survived the crash, in which the Honda Passport veered off the left side of a road, hit a guardrail and overturned, Lt. Anne Ralston said. Investigators say it came to rest in a pond just south of the city of Warren, about 60 miles east of Cleveland near the Pennsylvania state line.
Ralston didn’t know where the people in the SUV were headed. She said the two injured were taken to a hospital. There was no information immediately available on their conditions.
All those killed were ages 14 to 19, authorities said. Their names weren’t released, while family members were being contacted.
The highway patrol received the first call on the crash at 7:15 a.m., Ralston said. Divers helped the patrol, and local police referred calls to the patrol as well.
Youtube vlogger areyouintheknow captured video of the SUV being pulled from the pond. It can be viewed below:

From other reports, some of the kids were wearing seatbelts, but not all of them (they had 8 people in a 5-person vehicle). A horribly tragedy; my prayers are with the families of the dead :-(

and no teen drivers with passengers unless they have an over 21 experienced driver in the car
In Many Countrys like new zealand these simple Enforced road rules
have cut the road toll literally By 60%

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 11:49pmMaybe things have changed in New Zealand, but back in 1998 when I traveled the west coast of the big island (southern island) there wasn’t ANY road enforcement. The length of the coast was almost the same as from LA to SF and there were only 25,000 people there. The road had only been sealed within the previous 18 months. There was even a one lane bridge about 30 miles south of Greymouth which the train also used!
There were so few cars that most locals didn’t slow down for curves, they just used the whole road. The chances of running into somebody was considered “acceptable”. They had about one head-on a day as I recall.

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 9:04pmTeenagers should not drive an SUV. They sit up high off the ground, they are taller than they are wide, and don’t handle well at high speeds or in curves.
Teens need a low to the ground, wide bodied vehicle, that has great tires and very little power.
It takes years of experience to master the art of driving safely. Most of us live through our driving mistakes, and learn from the bad experiences. Unfortunately, these teens did not survive the mistake.
Rest in peace children. Your lives were snuffed out way too soon.
May God comfort your family members and friends.

Posted on March 11, 2013 at 12:10pmWise words. Thanks LEAD! Frustrating and nerve wracking as it is training teens to drive safely, it pays to make them practice MANY more than the recommended behind-the-wheel hours. Especially after dark. An under-prepared teen driver is probably the most dangerous thing on the road.

We have a cousin that was seriously injured in an auto accident at 16 and can no longer walk, talk or do anything else for herself. She will live in the confines of a wheelchair for the remainder of her life.
My only question is – why is this national news?

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 8:49pmIt’s rare when stories like this make national headlines but all teen driving fatalities should. Driving is the number one cause of death for teenagers in America and perhaps if all these fatal crashes got national media attention, we could begin to solve this problem. We lose more teens in crashes each year than the number of soldiers we’ve lost since 2001. It’s way past time for a national discussion about these tragedies.

Although I had previously worked a number of traffic accidents, and the first two were fatalities. The course never really prepared me for what really was to come. Amongst them all, I have had to respond to two five fatality accidents. Natrually, I will spare all here any of the details. I feel for what these first responders are going through, and may God bless the families.

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 9:33pmHi MONK, I hear you on that. You have some experience at what these guys had to go through. Still, my concern is more with the families. I remember my Dad making me read newspaper articles about teenage traffic accidents and their results as I approached that age. He wasn’t worried about the older car they let me have, it really was me, and later my sisters. That is a problem with youth, we all were ten feet tall and bullet proof, or really just thought so at one time.

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 8:32pmWarren, Ohio apparently doesn’t have any reporters to investigate the scene. No information is contained in this story. Maybe if they talked to a jogger in the area they could find out if any skidmarks were there or even the distance the vehicle traveled after it hit the guard rail. Clues?

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 11:29pmBased on the Ohio State Patrol report, and photos I’ve seen, looks like the accident took place here (just north of Burton St):
http://maps.google.com/maps?daddr=Pine+Ave+SE&hl=en&ll=41.221422,-80.806053&spn=0.001989,0.005284&sll=41.22005,-80.803242&sspn=0.015914,0.042272&geocode=Fcv8dAIdVf8u-w&t=h&gl=us&mra=ls&z=18
They said vehicle was heading south on Pine Ave at high speed, hit the guardrail and went over into the swamp there. Its pretty easy to pick up speed there, with a good long straight stretch. I used to drive that way to work years ago. Seems like, based on the lay of the road there, there’s a curve, but its not real sharp. Even if they had kept going straight out of the straight-away, seems like they would have ended up in a different pond than they did. They would have had to veer pretty hard left just before the curve, I would think, to hit and flip over and into the swamp.
I wonder if maybe there was something in the road, deer or something, that might have been involved.

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 11:45pmMore info:
Tribune Chronicle has photos from the scene that seem to correlate what I was just mentioning. Based on the photos, the driver veered hard left into the rail (which sits pretty low to the ground) a hundred feet or so before the curve.

Just the thought of a Honda brings back the gruesome memories of a three vehicle accident involving a Honda, Mercedes Benz, and a tractor trailer rig. The family in the Mercedes were unscathed as well the truck driver. I’ll leave it at that.

Does not belong with the post about losing their own. Just because you have no hope does not mean they do not. They will see their loved one again. No one will ever see you. A tree falls in the forest and makes a loud noise. The sound fades to nothingness and the tree rots away until it is gone forever. The sound of your voice is no different than the noise of the falling tree. Unless you change your fate will be no different than that of the fallen tree.
