LAHORE, Pakistan (TheBlaze/AP) — Hundreds of Christians clashed with police across Pakistan on Sunday, a day after a Muslim mob burned dozens of homes owned by members of the minority religious group in retaliation for alleged insults against Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.
Christians are often the target of Pakistan’s harsh blasphemy laws, which rights activists say are frequently used to persecute religious minorities or settle personal disputes. Politicians have been reluctant to reform the laws for fear of being attacked by religious radicals, as has happened in the past.

The plight of Pakistan’s other religious minorities, such as Shiite Muslims, Hindus and Ahmadis, has also deepened in recent years as hard-line interpretations of Islam have gained ground and militants have stepped up attacks against groups they oppose. Most Pakistanis are Sunni Muslims.
As TheBlaze previously reported, the latest incident began Friday after a Muslim in the eastern city of Lahore accused a Christian man of blasphemy — an offense punishable by life in prison or even death. A day later, hundreds of angry Muslims rampaged through the Christian neighborhood, burning about 170 houses.
Authorities have arrested 160 suspected members of the mob, many of whom were identified through TV footage and photos published in newspapers, said police officer Abdur Rehman.
But it remains to be seen whether anyone will be held to account. Mob violence is not uncommon following blasphemy allegations, and police often round up large numbers of suspects. However, these arrests rarely result in actual convictions.
There have been no convictions related to a deadly attack on Christians in 2009 in the eastern city of Gojra that was also sparked by blasphemy allegations, the Express Tribune newspaper reported Sunday. Angry Muslims burned dozens of houses in Gojra, killing eight Christians – seven of them from one family trapped in a burning home.

No Christians were hurt in Saturday’s attack in Lahore because they fled the area overnight before the mob arrived. But police were criticized for failing to prevent the mob from attacking the Christians’ homes.
The largest demonstrations on Sunday were in Lahore and the southern city of Karachi. About 1,000 people protested in both places, and smaller demonstrations were held in the capital, Islamabad, and the adjoining city of Rawalpindi.
In Lahore, hundreds of protesters, some carrying large crucifixes, blocked a main highway as they pressed their demands for better compensation payments from the government, said police official Malik Awais. Police fired tear gas canisters and used batons to disperse the demonstrators and took six of them into custody, he said.
The protesters damaged several vehicles, uprooted a fence along the road and burned an electricity generator, Awais said. They also pelted police with stones, injuring seven of them, he said.
Government spokesman Pervaiz Rasheed promised the government would help the Christians rebuild their houses, but the protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the way the government was handling the incident.
“I have been robbed of all of my life’s savings,” said Yousuf Masih, standing outside his burned home. He said the government’s announcement that it would give 200,000 rupees ($2,000) compensation to each family was a joke.

Christians demonstrated around Pakistan to protest after a Muslim mob torched more than 100 Christian homes following allegations of blasphemy. Awais said the protesters were demanding the government raise the compensation amount from 200,000 rupees ($2,000) to 1 million rupees ($10,000).
In Karachi, protesters blocked a road in a main market and damaged about 25 vehicles, said police officer Ali Raza. Some of the demonstrators also attacked 10 shops and looted valuables and cash, he said. Police beat back the protesters and fired tear gas to disperse them. At least two protesters were taken into custody, Raza said.
Police have taken the Christian man accused of blasphemy into custody pending an investigation. Those who attacked the Christian neighborhood are also being investigated for a range of offenses, including arson, robbery and insulting the feelings of the Christian community, said Rehman, the police officer.
Akram Gill, a local bishop in the Lahore Christian community, said the incident had more to do with personal enmity between the two men involved than blasphemy. He said the men got into a brawl after drinking late one night, and in the morning the Muslim man made up the blasphemy story as payback.
Once an accusation is made, it’s difficult to get it reversed, partly because law enforcement officials and politicians do not want to be seen as being soft on blasphemers.

Two prominent politicians were assassinated in 2011 for urging reform of the law. The killer of one of the politicians was hailed as a hero, and lawyers at his legal appearances showered him with rose petals.
According to Human Rights Watch, there are at least 16 people on death row in Pakistan for blasphemy and another 20 are serving life sentences.
While Muslims are frequently accused of blasphemy, members of Pakistan’s small Christian community are especially vulnerable to the accusations. Christians make up less than 5 percent of Pakistan’s 180 million people and many hold low-paying jobs, such as cleaning and street sweeping.
Last year, there was a rare reversal of a blasphemy case against A teenage Christian girl with suspected mental disabilities who was accused of burning pages of the Quran. She was released after a huge domestic and international outcry about her treatment. A local Muslim cleric was arrested and accused of planting the pages in her bag to incriminate her, a rare example of the accuser facing legal consequences. However, he was later freed on bail.

Mar. 10, 2013 at 8:47pmOur freedom is being taken away at breakneck speed..One thing about Muslims is that they are devout..and they are absolutely serious..It warms my soul to see the ones who have been delivered by Jesus/Yeshua.. In Joel Rosenberg’s book “Epicenter” it read that a Muslim Cleric had stated that in 2001..6 million muslims had converted to Jesus Christ to the behest of that Cleric..It was revealed that this was happening because Jesus was appearing to them in dreams and visions and performing miracles and healings..not because of missionaries..but a pastor disagreed..he said it was because missionaries were on their knees praying..He was right..It is worth bringing these people to the grace of our Lord..they were given this Luciferian religion for manipulation..so their leaders..of the NWO illuminati could have a powerful military at their disposal..They need to know about the love of Jesus..All we can do is pray and witness when presented the opportunity,.. And we need to pray for ourselves for strength..patience and love..

You should read the book of Job in the Bible..It will tell you what goes on in the Spiritual realm..and what Christians will endure for the grand prize..of being eternally with God and Jesus His Son..There is a hell..and it won’t be any party..and it will be forever..You never die there Grover..when the lost die..they go to a place of torment to await the final Great White Throne Judgement at the end of the thousand yr (Millenial Reign of Christ) And the ones going to that judgement will be raised and joined again to their bodies and will burn forever in that eternal fire..That is where most will be spending their eternity..The ones belonging to Jesus..only begotten Son of God..will spend that eternity in a place of peace and beauty..The Bible reads to work out your salvation with fear and trembling..that is something we should do daily..We are here for but a short time in earth suits..It is your choice..I choose to read the Word of God in the Holy Bible..accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour..believe He left His place on high beside the heavenly Father..was born of a virgin..lived a perfect sin free life to prove Himself the Son of God..took our sins upon the cross where He was crucified..rose the 3rd day to give us the chance to live eternally with Him..It is your choice..He gave us free will. This is the plan of salvation..

Isn’t it sad that it is now being taken from us. Yet we are letting it be taken from us. 1) by not standing us against the oppressors, 2) because we don’t teach our youth about our heritage and the freedom we once enjoyed.
There is a game right now trying to raise funds to be printed called: Historical Conquest, ( http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fastfacts/historical-conquest-the-game )which teaches our youth and all those who play about our heritage directly and just by playing. To me it appears you are trying to push your non religious ideas on other people, the same way the muslims and other religious fanatics do. You are becoming what you hate! There have always been and will be wars on the right way to live. When someone or some group of people try to force something on you or your family or group of followers that you don’t like …you fight back to maintain your way of life and YES your FREEDOM.
FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!! It must be refreshed from time to time to keep those in check that want to destroy your and our way of life.
Your choice to believe or not to believe in a God is yours. To live in peace and harmony with your fellow man is better than fighting, but when you fight make your enemy a real one, The ones that will KILL you and yours

Mar. 10, 2013 at 8:29pmBut in America the government will come and remove you from your home for your own safety and resettle you in one of their prepared FEMA camps. Your house and its belongings will no doubt go to the State for your safety-relocation fees and permanent detention as also at that time will be noted as a threat to national security.
The writing is on the wall. As long as the Dems control our government, I feel I can be free to wildly speculate what they will do because with the good God fearing people of this country, anything is possible under their leadership. They are making it darn near impossible for us to coexist as they influence our own children away from even the best homes where they were brought up with the truth.

@freedom lover……so, i will hypothetically remove religion, that way we start on the same page. and i will go one more step and agree that we should all be reasonable. my question will now be whose reason?….yours, mine or someone elses entirely? thats where your logic falls apart. then people would just fight about whose reason was the most reasonable. so i cant see how the removal of religion from the worlds would make it a better place at all.
i choose to follow the teachings of a man that says to turn the other cheek, that the meek will inherit the earth and to love my neighbor as i would love myself. how can any of those teachings be bad things?
if you choose not to believe, that is your prerogotive……but don’t judge those of us who do. we won’t judge you either, we will keep you in our prayers instead

There is no ritual that must be ungone….thats religion which I also feel is a real impediament to Gods saving grace. Arabs are actually born into their religion but also possess the same free agency to choose which is right and which is against God. Many a Muslim have been converting to Christianity which means followers of Christs teachings. Your not stuck in one place and neither is the atheist. God wrote his laws on all flesh so they might know the truth. Jesus told us that wide is the gate to destruction and many will go there and narrow is the gate to the father which few will find it. Let Christ transform your heart today! Read his words and see if the truth about our condition is not evident. Eternity is a long time to spend with the demons and despots.

Mar. 10, 2013 at 8:45pmWill you accept the call when it comes to be a part of dismantling the things you rail against as evil and even murder the people who believe such things. If so? Then how would you then claim that you are morally superior and righteous after all that blood on your hands?

Mar. 10, 2013 at 6:05pmLet me guess, this is was a gun free zone where the fires were set? You can thank “threats to public safety” like Sen. Feinstein for advancing “reasonable, sensible rules” like that?
Have you ever noticed how polite people are when they know you are armed?

Mar. 10, 2013 at 6:03pmMuslims are getting fed up with their religion and are converting to Christianity in droves. They are looking around and wondering why their god continues to not do anything for them. It is just like Elijah challenging the prophets of Baal (false god) in the Old Testament. They’re waking up in the middle east. They look at the only nation in history, the United States, founded on The Bible and how it has become the most prosperous and generous and powerful and loving nation in world history and realizing that what they believe is hogwash. Actually, many don’t want to believe but are threatened with death if they convert. If their lives were not threatened Islam would drop 50% in total members withing five years. God bless those Christians over there – they are true heroes.
Don’t think it can happen here? See link to muslims stoning Christians in Michigan below (look at the hate in their eyes)
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2012/06/27/allahu-akbar-shock-video-shows-muslims-allegedly-stoning-christian-protesters-in-michigan/
Elijah challenges the worshippers of Baal (this is happening all over again right now!)

The Arab people can be as loving and kind as anyone else from any nation. They deserve to be freed from tyranny and Jesus is the only way that will ever happen and it is going to happen.

Mar. 10, 2013 at 7:22pmEncourage people to embrace reason and abandon religion. Religious moderates who generally don’t take holy books all that seriously give cover to the nutjobs that do. And it’s a serious problem. By speaking clearly about how putting faith in these so called holy books, of which there are several and make contradictory claims, is an unreasonable and stupid thing to do, not to mention it makes the world dangerous.

Mar. 10, 2013 at 7:45pmActually he did, MS, he said reason. Of course “reason” was the driving force behind the French Revolution, so “Freedomlover-US” isn’t exactly a good student of world history.

Mar. 10, 2013 at 8:02pm@freedom lover……so, i will hypothetically remove religion, that way we start on the same page. and i will go one more step and agree that we should all be reasonable. my question will now be whose reason?….yours, mine or someone elses entirely? thats where your logic falls apart. then people would just fight about whose reason was the most reasonable. so i cant see how the removal of religion from the worlds would make it a better place at all.
i choose to follow the teachings of a man that says to turn the other cheek, that the meek will inherit the earth and to love my neighbor as i would love myself. how can any of those teachings be bad things?
if you choose not to believe, that is your prerogotive……but don’t judge those of us who do. we won’t judge you either, we will keep you in our prayers instead.

Mar. 10, 2013 at 9:32pm160+ Million People have been murdered in the past 112 years which is more than all of human history combined. All in the name of atheism and making government and man god. I’d say that’s not exactly the route we want to take my friend. See film/doc below – it is fantastic and explains this in more detail.
http://www.disclose.tv/action/viewvideo/125894/AGENDA_Grinding_America_Down_Full_Movie/
Note: I am not saying all atheists are bad; there are wonderful agnostics in most cities/towns. The reasonable atheists would be torchered to death by the lunatic atheists if the restraint of Christianity was lifted from the earth. (in fact the world lasts seven years when this happens) You may be reasonable non-believer and a “good person” by man’s standards but that doesn’t mean the guy next door is and certainly doesn’t mean the leader of your country would be either.
