‘It’s Going to Hurt Us’: Automatic Budget Cuts Threaten Major Military Air Shows

(TheBlaze/AP) — Even a rural festival celebrating the harvest of Georgia’s famous sweet onions isn’t safe from the federal budget battle 600 miles away, as automatic cuts are apparently threatening to take away the star attraction for the Vidalia Onion Festival’s popular air show: the Navy’s daredevil fighter pilots, the Blue Angels.

The $85 billion in automatic budget cuts that took effect March 1 have thrown planning for the festival’s air show into a tailspin, just weeks before the April 20 event that officials agreed to hold a week earlier than usual so they could book the vaunted group. The Navy plans to cancel Blue Angels shows booked next month in Vidalia and three other cities. And there is a good chance dozens more air shows across the U.S. could get the ax as well, leaving host cities facing threats of lost tourism revenue and dwindling ticket sales.

“It’s going to hurt us,” said Marsha Temples, chief organizer of the Vidalia air show, who estimates past festival weekends have drawn 15,000 extra people when the Blue Angels were on the bill. “People like to see the Blues because they put on an absolutely phenomenal show. You have people who actually follow them and a lot of people come from out of town just to see them.”

Its Going to Hurt Us: Automatic Budget Cuts, Sequester Threaten Major Military Air Shows

While the Blue Angels’ spring schedule is in doubt, the Air Force’s formation-flying Thunderbirds and the Army’s Golden Knights skydivers have canceled their performances outright. Combined, the three teams had booked more than 190 performances between the spring and fall. That’s left many air show organizers scrambling to find replacements, such as civilian pilots with loud, fast jets from the Vietnam era or vintage planes from World War II. The uncertainty has forced others to simply cancel altogether.

John Cudahy, president of the Virginia-based International Council of Air Shows, said at least 150 U.S. air shows each year count on military performers to draw big crowds. A group like the Blue Angels or the Thunderbirds can account for 10 to 30 percent of attendance – in some cases enough to determine if a show makes or loses money.

Canceled appearances don’t just mean fewer dollars spent on tickets, souvenirs and concessions. They also mean fewer fans traveling to shows out of town and spending on hotels, restaurants and gas.

“If the military does not participate in air shows during the 2013 season, the economic impact will reach far beyond the show itself and deeply into the communities in which those shows are held,” Cudahy said.

The Politico adds:

The Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds are easy targets for military budget cutters.

The high-profile flight demonstration squadrons, forced to cancel their participation in air shows across the country as a result of sequestration, are very visible symbols of U.S. air power — and their absence is sure to draw attention…

[...]

“In April alone, there would be tens of thousands of people who would have had the chance to see the Blues perform,” said Navy Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, a spokesman for the Blue Angels. “The Blues exist to inspire the next generation of naval aviators, and it would be a great loss if that doesn’t happen.”  [Emphasis added]

Several air shows hosted by military bases, which show off their flashiest planes for publicity and as a recruitment tool, were canceled almost immediately. They include shows at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.; Luke Air Force Base, Ariz.; Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C.; Langley Air Force Base, Va.; Dover Air Force Base, Del.; and Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas.

Businesses and community boosters at Pensacola Beach, Fla. – where the Blue Angels are stationed – are already trying to avert possible cancellation of the team’s July show that’s become one of the city’s biggest tourism bonanzas. An economic impact study last year estimated the Pensacola air show lured more than 15,000 visitors in addition to the normal July weekend beach crowd of about 109,000.

Buck Lee, chairman of the Santa Rosa Island Authority that oversees Pensacola Beach, said business owners and sponsors are offering to donate $100,000 or more to pay for jet fuel and other costs if that means the Blue Angels will commit to flying.

“We have a restaurant that just opened that contacted me and said, `We’re in for $10,000 if you need it,’” Lee said. “It’s a $2 million weekend for the area. That’s for hotels, employees, restaurants, souvenirs. It’s just a great three days out here.”

While the Las Vegas-based Thunderbirds and the Golden Knights from Fort Bragg, N.C., have canceled their schedules beginning April 1, the Blue Angels have hedged. The team has continued training in California for upcoming March shows in El Centro, Calif., and Key West, Fla. On Monday, the team updated its Facebook page with a statement saying the Navy “intends to cancel” the Blue Angels’ April performances.

Air show organizers said the Blue Angels have been unable to tell them if they will perform or not. A spokeswoman for the Navy jet team, Lt. Katie Kelly, said the Blue Angels are waiting until the last minute in the hope something will change.

Private organizers of big air shows in Dayton, Ohio, and Louisville, Ky., have vowed to continue even if military pilots are no-shows. Others have folded their tents for 2013. The Thunder Over the Blue Ridge air show scheduled for May 11-12 in Martinsburg, W.Va., was canceled after the Air Force’s Thunderbirds announced they had been grounded.

Organizers of the Indianapolis Air Show also decided to pull the plug despite the Blue Angels holding out hope they might be able to fly in the show Father’s Day weekend. The air show’s chairman, Robert Duncan, said a $10,000 sponsor pulled out as soon as the president and Congress failed to avert the budget cuts. If the Blue Angels canceled, organizers expected the show to lose 25 percent or more of its audience. Duncan said that kind of financial blow would likely leave the show unable to cover expenses.

“They weren’t committing to anything other than to say, `We will continue to practice and fly,’” Duncan said of the Blue Angels.

The Indianapolis show, which has raised $1.3 million for charity in its 15-year history, attracted more than 65,000 spectators last year when the Thunderbirds performed.

On the South Carolina coast, the April 27-28 air show hosted by Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort remains on track – at least for now. Chief organizer Ivey Liipfert said “there’s still some time to hold out hope.”

More than 100,000 spectators swarm into Beaufort, a city of 12,400, for the air show. Surveys indicate more than a third of the crowd travels more than 50 miles to see it, and many spectators stay for more than three days. Liipfert said without the Blue Angels, it’s possible the show would be canceled.

John Rembold, a board member of the local Chamber of Commerce, said that will definitely deprive hotels and other business of tourism dollars. It would serve as an unavoidable civics lesson, however.

“If folks have not been paying attention to the dire budget problems our nation faces,” Rembolt said, “this might be a little bit of cold water in the face.”

I’m sorry..But having a solvent country is much more important than an air show. If you need an air show then fly a paper plane…it’s much more interactive.

Sorry, have to disagree with you, as these air shows by the Blue Angels are simply fantastic and thrilling to watch for the young and old. You can see the faces of young future pilots light up in anticipation and thrill for the show. The loss of these performances may save but a few taxpayers dollars, while the waste, fraud and abuse in this government would boggle the minds of most Americans. The wasteful spending for the lobbyists and their family members clustered in DC like Begger’s’ in the streets, for more taxpayer money, the constant vacations and use of Air Force I and II bring nothing to the constituents of this country who have worked hard to have it all providing government leaders all the pleasures they so take readily like pigs. Posh restaurants closed to average taxpayer Joe and family, now take away the joy of seeing the Blue Angels performances, the visits to the Americans our main home, the WH, all because government has a spending problem referred to as investing.
Time for Change folks. Better wake up and hold them accountable of their wasteful spending habits.
The GSA man sipping wine in the bathtub, at a plush resort, is now the poster boy of government waste. Maybe that photo should be printed on all the dollar bills.

      It’s a matter of choice.
If cancelling a flyover helped balance the budget, cancel it.
But why did we just GIVE F-16′s to Egypt if we’re so broke?
Why don’t we cancel the F-35 that nobody except the lobbyists want?
I’d rather cancel the new carpet for the general’s office in the Pentagon.
      You know that won’t happen.
Let’s cancel Obama’s golf tour on AF-1 too! “Have some skin in the game.”

Personally I believe this–among many others—is an Obama scheme that forced the hand of the Republicans. The lowly had several years to actualize a plan that would address US ills and setbacks, many of which he created himself then ignored. He has spent more time romancing Hollywood and roaming the countryside trying to get the citizenry to go against the Republicans than he has fixing this comatose economy and other matters of import. The character signed up for the job twice and this all falls into his lap. He owns it all. It’s his “legacy”, albeit a comical one.

Air shows are nothing more than training that is viewed by the public, training will continue? Can you imagine N. Korea, creating weapons of mass destruction, as a means of canceling out debt? North Koreans could trust their leaders all day long, but there is nothing they could do about it if those leaders turned on their own citizens?

Public trust is kind of like precision flying, be careful who you pick for your wingman? America is leading the world into the next century by showing us what precision flying can accomplish, or by showing that trusting the public and teaching them how to fly, is a wonderful thing to behold, because it means we will travel the stars soon?

If the businesses want to pay for it, fine. If the tax payer is or was picking up the tab for these shows then it should not be or ever have been done. Our government bis broke. Hell it’s beyond broke. Doing things like putting on air shows is why it’s broke. They keep allocating our money for stupid sh1t they have no business being involved in. Why? Because our representatives have taken the notion that they are above reproach and have to answer to no one. They think it’s their money to do with as they please and it is endless. Our biggest problem is not so much that our nation is bankrupt but rather the political mentality that somehow keeps getting voted into power. I think it is because most Americans are just plain stupid. The equivalent of our representatives we vote for would be the fictional town of Mayberry electing Otis Campbell to head up the liquor board. I mean, what else could it be? Most of our countrymen are walking morons that buy the same political lies year after year after year and keep putting sleaze into office to oversee their lives. And to top it off, when they get scre#ed again it’s like “Damn, didn’t see that coming.” Of course you didn’t see it coming because your a stupid moron. But yet they still mange to tear themselves away from the TV long enough to get out and vote for another crook. I don’t see any solution other than a giant wall where the stupid morons live on one side and those that see through all this crap live on the other.

End their free phones and they just won’t vote next time. Then what.? During the next election the only voters there will be are the ones who actually had to pay for the “Free” phones. No, no no, that won’t work no how. I believe anyone who would cast a vote for new government handouts as well as the continuation of the ones they already receive is guilty of voter fraud as their vote was purchased. The last time I heard that was supposed to be illegal. It’s basically the same thing that politicians used to do to get votes for themselves. That would be to promise a free bottle of liquor if you came down and voted. In a society in which the majority becomes narcissistic, self absorbed morons (like ours) anyone running for office on the platform that they will clean up the mess, stop wasteful spending, cut entitlements and make our country fiscally sound, has about as much chance of being elected as the original Bozo the clown. Mind you, with morons voting, Bozo’s chances are pretty good especially if he’s giving stuff away but I chose him because he is not electable, he’s dead. The narcissistic morons cannot see past their own wants and desires. Bankrupt: Adjective (of a person or organization) Declared in law unable to pay outstanding debts: “the company was declared bankrupt”
Total US Debt 12:15am 3-11-2013 ($59,165,099,764,931.00 Source DEBTClock.org) That is Fifty Nine Trillion, One Hundred Sixty Five Billion, Ninety Nine Million, Seven Hundred Sixty Four Thousand, Nine Hundred Thirty One Dollars.
      Fox News:
Personal Debt is almost 16 trillion dollars. (16,000,000,000,000.00)
So, if your family earns $50,000 per year, and if you spend none of that on food, rent, transportation, income tax or even pursuing your own happiness, and if you take all of your family’s household income and use it — not to pay down the government’s current debt, but just to pay down the $1 trillion in new debt that the government overspends each year – it would take your family 32 million years to pay for it. Now, multiply that by 16 – because the government is now $16 trillion in debt – to see how long it will take for you to pay it back. That’s five hundred and twelve million years. Yes, 512,000,000 years.

Seriously, air shows, really? I love them as much as anybody: my wife was on an all Women’s skydiving team that performed at many, and even I’ve been involved in one over in Bratislava, Slovakia. But with the financial mess going on today, air shows are the least of our concerns.

This is just another Progressive Liberal punishment for anyone that wants to actually solve the financial mess they’ve created.

PS. It’s really cool to look DOWN on an SR71 in flight, 4000′ below you as you’re turning on jump-run! Of course that was 25 years ago.

Ah the SR-71….back when America and the free world dared to dream…….and made the seemingly impossible not only probable but reality.

But cancel Mooche’s 50th festivities? Oh, no, never.
Fill her ass with helium and float her over some football stadiums and air shows. Eeeewwww!

The U.S. Government is lost and gone. They are aiding our enemies now. As far as I’m concerned they no longer exist. They have made themself the People’s enemy and an enemy of this country as well. Most of our states are still intact and functional. that is the good news. Maybe someday the federal government will come to its senses and realize their mistake. As a U,S, citizen and veteran, my job/duty is to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution – not the government, politicians, the military, or anything else.

Don’t blame the military blame our resident boy king Obama. He ran around like chicken little. Mr doom and gloom, is sitting back laughing his Biden off. The boy king and his family will go on vacation at the vineyard on our dime. When is he going to start sacrificing, and going without? How about you donate your check to a charity, with 15 mill in the bank, you don’t need a check for a measly 20 k a month. How about all of our politicians start sacrificing, like we are. No vacations, cuts in pay, after all this sequester is their faults, not ours.

Yes. Barber2. Let’s divide, the gop establishment is good at dividing. Do we have the money to fly these planes? Time for real cuts, i would rather see the Blue Angels than have unnecessary bases oversees.

I hear Big Sis will provide free flyovers, you just won’t know they are there, or what they are looking at.

SOY, we not only already pay for them, they make for good training missions. During my early days in the service I met a number of pilots who begged for more air time. It keeps them sharp.

That’s one of their best forms of propaganda. Fear not, they’ll figure out a way to do flyovers over stadiums across the country. LOL
