On Anniversary of Nazi Invasion, This is What Austrians Are Saying About Hitler

Seventy-five years after the Nazi invasion and occupation of Austria, a newspaper in country has asked citizens about their opinion of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi annexation during World War II. Jewish leaders who have been raising the alarm about anti-Semitism in Austria say the results were not surprising.

Forty-two percent said life was not all bad under Hitler, while 61 percent said they would be interested in a strong-armed leader who did not have to deal with democratic challenges like political opponents and elections. The survey, published this weekend, is getting prominent play in the media in Israel, which is home to some 250,000 Holocaust survivors. That’s half the number of survivors who arrived in the country since Israel was founded in 1948.

Timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary next week of Austria’s annexation by Nazi Germany, the Market Institut poll for newspaper Der Standard found 61 per cent of respondents, mostly the elderly, liked the idea of a strong man as leader.

Many Austrians wanted a union, or Anschluss , with Germany in 1938. A few Austrians put up resistance that grew over time.

In the latest poll, 53 per cent thought the Anschluss was voluntary and 46 per cent saw Austria as a victim. Forty-two per cent said “not everything was bad under Hitler” while 57 per cent saw no good aspects to the Hitler era.

Additionally, 54 percent said they believed neo-Nazi groups would succeed in Austrian elections this September if they were not banned there.

The poll also showed that most Austrians believe their country has dealt adequately with its Nazi history and that victims of the Holocaust have been fully compensated.

“If accurate, the results are extremely alarming, but not entirely surprising,” Efraim Zuroff, director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Israel office, told TheBlaze. “Austria is a country which has a long tradition of anti-Semitism and which produced some of the biggest Nazi war criminals.”

“In recent years, there are efforts to fight against anti-Semitism and more honestly face Austrians’ participation in Holocaust crimes, but there has not been a successful prosecution in Austria of a Nazi war criminal in more than 30 years,” Zuroff said.

The head of Vienna’s Jewish community said in January he’d seen a doubling of the number of anti-Semitic incidents reported in Austria in the last year.

Recent incidents include a rabbi’s report that he was verbally abused by neo-Nazi hooligans even as police stood nearby, while a far-right politician posted a cartoon viewed as anti-Semitic on his website.

Before the Nazis annexed Austria, its Jewish population numbered 195,000. According to figures cited by Reuters, two-thirds of them were exiled in the “Aryanization” program and besides 2,000 left behind, all the rest were killed in concentration camps.

The Anschluss anniversary will be marked Tuesday in Austria, the place where the Nazis tested their plan for the extermination of Europe’s Jews.

“Vienna was a very important place for the fate of all European Jews because the automated driving out of Jews was perfected here,” Joachim Riedl, the author of several books on Jewish history and Vienna, told Reuters.

  Tehchengineer: I am sooo sorry that you were decieved by the video you posted. I watched it. It is wrong….. Don’t you have a pastor that could help answer questions like this for you? I felt for you after reading your post and watching the video. The scripture they used about sacrificing sons was a reference back to Exodus 13 and the institution of the Passover. I was purely symbolic and was meant to teach and remind the Israelite and their children about their Exodus from Egypt. They were not permitted to sacrifice their children. They were required to buy them back from the process, which was also symbolic…

  Anti-Semitism has sky-rocketed in all of Europe with most of it occurring in France which has the largest Muslim population than any other country, yet I have never read of even one of these Jewish “spokesmen” mention that Muslims account for nearly all of it. It’s as if they so badly want to hold onto making white gentiles feel guilty they refuse to mention who is really behind Anti-Semitism nowadays. This in spite of the fact that millions of Christian Americans were killed or wounded in the fight to free the camps.
  
  Nor have I EVER known of a high-ranking Jew voice gratitude on behalf of the Jewish people for the losses of these Christians either.

  I wonder how many of that 42% were alive 75 years ago when Hitler invaded Austria? The problem is most of the people from that generation are dead, so nobody is around to challenge parasitic liberals who teach revisionist history. My nephew graduated from one of the most conservative universities in Texas and one of his professors was teaching students that Hitler wasn’t all bad, because of the autobahn. Let’s see… 12 million people slaughtered in concentration camps, Germany in ruins at the end of Hitler’s reign… nope, he was all bad.

  in 2008 54% of US Catholics voted for Obama…the number was obviously higher in the Hispanic Catholic population – about 70% – and lower in the white Catholic population – about 40%.
  in 2012 51% of US Catholics voted for Obama…again higher in the Hispanic population than in the white. In fact, if it had not have been for the Hispanic Catholic voters, Catholics would have voted for the “evil” Moron by a 2-1 margin. The US Catholic Church is now about 55-60% Hispanic but the whites tend to be more informed and vote more traditional and conservative, so they pulled the average down to nearly dead even, 50-50, even the Hispanic Catholic percentage for Obama DROPPED in 2012.

People do not know history (thanks to the dumbing down of our youth, which helps to indoctrinate them) therefore, history is easily repeated under the guise of doing good for the masses.   Read F.A. Hyak’s “The Road to Serfdom” written during the early 40′s about the rise of totalitarianism in Europe and the Soviet Union. It is a fascinating read, though as a REAL academic publication instead of today’s Progressive Liberal mush it is very intense. It explains how populations get this mentality and how it inevitably leads to “strong arm” leaders that end up killing their own citizens.

Also the fear of the Islamic boogeyman that doesn’t exist is getting them to support skinhead security instead of their rights.   What exactly is Nazism? Simple racist views? Those are far older than the Nazi’s. Hitler simply manipulated what was already there in the German people and then made it seem acceptable. Is it racism coupled with socialism? We see that process over and over again throughout history. It’s happening again in some EU countries and here in the US. Stalin and Mao Zedong were responsible for much larger genocides yet we aren’t taught about those in our world history classes. I don’t get why most people know of the holocaust yet most are clueless of Stalin’s and Mao’s. It was pretty sickening and an outrage to see a US public figure actually claim to have Mao as her inspiration. She knew the American people are ignorant of world history.   The Austrians didn’t exactly “vote Hitler in.” He was already in, and thoroughly in control, when he held one of his many fake “plebiscites” to confirm the Anschluss retroactively. He’d been rigging polls in Germany for five years, so he had a lot of practice. That said, there’s no reason to doubt that a majority of Austrians at the time supported their country’s annexation by Germany.

I used to read in the Old Testament about how a generation of Israelites would turn away from God for a time, and then return to belief again, and then turn away again a few years later. The cycle repeated over and over. I wondered why a people couldn’t hold their focus on God across multiple generations. But lately, as I reflect on things like this, attitudes toward the Nazi invasion in Austria, I realize how easily an entire generation can be led away from truth when it serves their current purposes. Thankfully, there are always a few left who are willing to stand up and say, “No. That’s not the way it was. This is what really happened.”

  Power and apparent virility. Security is a driving force. Better to be dominated and fed, than to be needy. Its the same choice female junkies make to take up prostitution to feed the habit. Male junkies become thieves, and females turn to selling sex. When the necessities of life become more scarce, the choices become limited, by basic survival instincts.

Forty-two percent said life was not all bad under Hitler, while 61 percent said they would be interested in a strong-armed leader who did not have to deal with democratic challenges like political opponents and elections. Sixty one percent are willing slaves and want to be ruled,pretty sick huh? We have a similar problem here in new Amerika with idiots begging to be slaves by keeping the worthless POS in power.

  I have a problem with the poll. They said “elderly”, but people who actually REMEMBER what life was like under Hitler are down right ancient!! I seriously doubt most of them were around under Hitler – in other words, they’re buying the myths passed down to them by their fellow Jew – hating countrymen, relatives, etc…

It appears that the re-writing of history is having its effects in Austria. too. If having the whole country put into factories making weapons of war, then I guess it was a good thing…
If the Austrian Jews (and others) were round up and sent to the camps for extermination, then

  Of course having the whole country put into factories making weapons of war is a good thing if they weren’t working at all before that. It was a good thing here too, especially since we didn’t have to go through the bad part of having the other side use their weapons on our homeland. Rounding up the Jews, no, that was bad.

After-all, Hitler was born in Austria. There never was and still isn’t a whole lot of difference between Germany and Austria Technically, a historian can refer to the Nazi “invasion” and “occupation” of Austria but the pictures show a very ecstatic welcome from the Austrian people, to say the least. “Annexed” is a far better description of the event but the term was buried in the article.

  I believe you need to elaborate upon your observation. Geographically Austria is in Western Europe. I’ve known Polish refugees and they were very anti-Nazi and communist. They were certainly Eastern Europeans. That “fits” closely with what I have experience with.

  The further east you go in Europe, the more you are entering countries where the “Bolshevik = Jew” equation popped up almost instantaneously after the Russian Revolution. It wasn’t true, but enough early Communist leaders in places like Hungary, Latvia and Poland were Jewish to give it some plausibility. In Germany and Austria, virulent anti-Semitism came less naturally; it had to be more systematically inculcated by the Nazis.

  Sargeking — I worked with a alot of ukrainians and polish as a kid now they must be over 90 if alive and they said about the same
  They liked the germans and hated them it sort of depended on the topic
  One thing about working with people that came over after the war they were tough and said things that were strange you a young canadian (ME)
  now I get it only took me 25 years
